CDS, NDA and AFCAT: Defence Exam Timing in Your Chart

Someone wrote into AstroMedha's chart chat in August 2026 asking whether they would clear the CDS exam on 12 September 2026, and asked for a yes or a no. Sixty-six different people asked a version of that question between late April and late August 2026, about CDS, NDA, AFCAT, state PSC papers and a dozen others.

The answer that came back was not a yes or a no, and the reason decides what the rest of this page is for. Two candidates sitting the same paper on the same morning sit under an identical sky. Every planet is in the same sign at the same degree for both of them. So whatever separates one candidate's result from another's, the sky on the day is not it, because the sky on the day is a constant shared by everyone in the hall. What differs between them is the chart each was born with and the planetary period each is running when the date arrives. That is where the answer lives, and it is why this question takes your birth details rather than your exam name.

What a chart gives you in place of a verdict is a shape you can act on. It gives you the dated stretch your exam falls inside and what that stretch supports, whether that is absorbing new material, grinding revision, or a result landing. It gives you the boundaries where the conditions change, so a choice between two sittings has something under it. It tells you which of your own planets is carrying the weight for this attempt and what condition that planet is in. A yes would have told you nothing about what to do next Tuesday.

The rest of this page comes in two halves. The first half is the sky on 12 September 2026, computed to the degree, which is the same for every candidate and is set out here in full. The second half is what makes that sky read differently on your chart than on the chart of the person sitting beside you, with the base rates measured across 10,228 sampled charts so you can see how much any single indicator actually narrows.

The sky on 12 September 2026

Computed for 09:00 IST at New Delhi, in the sidereal zodiac AstroMedha uses throughout. Positions are given as degrees within the sign.

The table below uses a handful of terms, so here is what each one means before you read it. A nakshatra is a segment of the zodiac, one of twenty-seven, each about 13 degrees and 20 minutes wide and each with its own ruling planet; it is a finer address than the sign. A planet is exalted, meaning it sits in the one sign classical Vedic astrology holds it strongest in, and debilitated, meaning it sits in the sign opposite that one. That best sign is the planet's exaltation, meaning the single sign that suits it most, and the opposite sign is its debilitation, meaning the single sign that suits it least. A planet is in its own sign, meaning a sign it rules. Those three labels are together what the tradition calls a planet's dignity, meaning its standing in the chart. And a planet is retrograde, meaning that seen from Earth it appears to move backwards through the zodiac.

Four things stand out about this particular date.

Jupiter is exalted and moving forward. Jupiter exalts in Cancer, and on 12 September it sits at nearly 22 degrees of Cancer, direct in motion. It entered Cancer on 2 June 2026 and leaves for Leo on 31 October 2026, so the whole of that autumn sits under an exalted Jupiter. Jupiter is one of the three planets AstroMedha reads for a career question, alongside the Sun and Mars.

Mercury is exalted too, and direct. Mercury exalts in Virgo and is at 8.23 degrees of Virgo here. It turned direct on 24 July 2026 and does not turn backwards again until 24 October 2026, so a written paper on 12 September falls in a clean stretch for the planet the tradition attaches to written work, calculation and examination. Mercury and Jupiter, the two planets a written examination leans on, the first for recall and calculation and the second for judgement, are therefore both at their best sign placement on the same morning. That is genuinely rare rather than loosely rare: across the 14,975 days from 1990 to 2030, both are exalted and both moving forward on 114 of them, which is 0.76 percent, or about one day in 131. It is worth knowing whichever chart you read it against.

Saturn is retrograde. Saturn has been moving backwards since 27 July 2026 and turns forward again on 11 December 2026. It stays in Pisces throughout and does not reach Aries until 3 June 2027. Saturn is the planet AstroMedha pairs with Mars for questions about competition and rivals, so its condition belongs in this reading rather than in the background.

Mars is six days from changing sign, and changing it for the worse. On the exam date Mars is at 26.14 degrees of Gemini, in the last four degrees of the sign, neutral in dignity. It crosses into Cancer at 17:00 IST on 18 September 2026, and Cancer is the sign of Mars's debilitation. Mars then stays in Cancer until 12 November 2026. For anyone weighing a defence sitting in that autumn window, the difference between a date before 18 September and a date after it is the difference between a neutral Mars and a debilitated one, and Mars is the planet most directly attached to this class of exam.

Two smaller details for completeness. The Sun is in its own sign Leo on 12 September and moves into Virgo at 08:00 IST on 17 September 2026, so a candidate sitting before the 17th has the Sun in its own sign and one sitting after does not. The Moon spends the whole of 12 September in Virgo, travelling from 2.75 degrees at midnight to 16.13 by the end of the day, and crosses from the nakshatra Uttara Phalguni into Hasta at about 13:00 IST. The Moon is the only body that moves far enough in a day to change the reading between a morning session and an afternoon one.

Why one sky reads differently for each candidate

The tradition reads a transit not in the abstract but as a count from the sign your own Moon occupied at birth, a method called gochara. That sign is your rashi, meaning the sidereal sign the Moon held at the moment you were born. You count from your rashi to the sign the transiting planet occupies now, counting your own sign as 1. The result is a house number from 1 to 12, and that number, rather than the planet's sign, is what the reading turns on.

Since every planet's sign on 12 September 2026 is fixed, that count is decided entirely by your Moon sign. Here is the whole table, computed from the positions above. Find your Moon sign on the left and read across.

A candidate with the Moon in Gemini has Mars sitting exactly on their Moon on exam day and Jupiter in the 2nd from it. A candidate with the Moon in Cancer has that same exalted Jupiter sitting on their Moon and Mars away in the 12th. Same morning, same hall, same planets, opposite arrangement. This is the smallest piece of your own birth data that changes the answer, and it takes only your Moon sign, which the free rashi tool returns from your birth date and place.

Two of those columns reward a closer look for this question. Transiting Jupiter falls in the 1st, 5th or 9th from the natal Moon, the three positions the tradition calls trines, for exactly the Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio Moons, which is 2,562 of the 10,228 sampled charts, or 25.05 percent. Transiting Saturn falls in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the rising sign, the three houses classical practice reads as difficult ground, in 2,647 of the same charts, or 25.88 percent. So roughly a quarter of candidates get each of those, which is a useful corrective if you have been told that either one is rare.

The Moon-sign count is where a reading starts rather than where it ends. It uses one point of your chart. The rest of this page uses the other eleven.

Which parts of a chart a defence exam is read from

An exam page usually points you at the 4th, 5th and 9th houses, which carry schooling, intelligence and higher learning. Those are the right houses for a question about studying, and the exams and your chart hub covers them in full. A defence selection is a different question and AstroMedha reads it from a different set.

AstroMedha groups a career question around houses 1, 10 and 11 and around the Sun, Mars and Jupiter. It groups a question about competition and rivals around houses 3, 6 and 10 and around Mars and Saturn. A defence exam is both of those at once: a contest against other candidates for a place in a uniformed service. The union is five houses and four planets, and each earns its place.

The 1st house is you, your direction and your fresh starts. In a chart with a known birth time it is anchored by the lagna, the rising sign, meaning the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. The lagna is what turns a set of planetary positions into twelve houses. Without a birth time there is no lagna, and four of these five houses become unreadable.

The 3rd house carries initiative and skill-building. In the older texts it is the house of valour and of effort applied by your own arm, which is why it sits in the competition set rather than the learning set.

The 6th house carries daily work, service, competition and rivals. A competitive exam is a 6th house event in the plainest sense: a fixed number of places and a field of people trying to take them.

The 10th house carries career, status, action and reputation, and it is the only house that belongs to both the career set and the competition set. That double membership is why the lord of the 10th gets its own section below.

The 11th house carries gains, promotion and the payoff on past effort, which is where a result lands rather than where the work is done.

As for the planets, the Sun is the one the tradition attaches to authority, command and government service. Mars is the one it attaches to courage, physical capacity and the armed forces. Jupiter carries teachers, judgement and the benefit that arrives from outside your own effort. Saturn carries endurance and the reward that only comes after repetition. A candidate for a defence service has a stake in all four, and which of them is running the show on the day has one answer per chart.

Your running period is what actually differs

Vimshottari, the timing system Vedic astrology uses, is a fixed 120-year sequence in which each of nine planets governs one continuous stretch of your life in a set order. Each stretch is a dasha, meaning a planetary period. The long one is the mahadasha, the major period, and its length is fixed per planet: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. Inside each major period the same nine planets take turns again in the same order, each governing an antardasha, a sub-period, in proportion to its own length. Inside each sub-period they take turns a third time, and each of those is a pratyantar, the third-level period. Which planet you start life on, and therefore which period you are running on any given date, is fixed by the exact degree of your Moon at birth, which is why a birth time to the minute matters here more than anywhere else in a chart.

To see how far that separates one candidate from another, 10,228 birth moments were sampled every six hours across the seven years from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2006, and each was read at 09:00 on 12 September 2026. This is the major period each of them is running on that date.

And the sub-period, at the same instant:

The major-period column is not simply proportional to period length, and the reason is that where you enter the cycle is fixed by your birth Moon rather than chosen. Rahu's 18 years are a fifteenth of the 120-year cycle, yet Rahu's period covers nearly a quarter of this cohort, because for people born in these particular seven years the sequence lands where it lands.

Now the number that decides what this page can and cannot do for you. Pairing the major period with the sub-period gives 81 possible combinations. All 81 occur in the sample. Adding the third level gives 729 possible combinations, and 712 of them occur among these 10,228 charts on that single date. The largest single combination, Rahu major with Saturn sub and Saturn third, covers 76 charts, which is 0.74 percent.

So on one fixed morning a cohort of candidates of roughly the same age is spread across 712 different timing readings. There is no version of that answer that can be written for all of them at once, and that is the whole reason this question takes your birth details rather than your exam name. The three lords test, and where it stops narrowing

A common way to read a competitive exam is to check whether the lord of the 3rd, 6th or 10th house is running a period at the time, on the reasoning that a period run by the ruler of a house tends to bring that house's business forward. The lord of a house is the planet that rules the sign sitting in it, so which planet that is changes with your rising sign.

The test is real and it is measurable, so here is how far it actually narrows. The 10,228-chart cohort was recast for New Delhi at four clock times a day, 02:15, 08:40, 14:25 and 20:50 IST, so that every chart has a rising sign and therefore house lords, and each was read at the same instant on 12 September 2026.

Read the bottom of that table before the top. Half the cohort passes the three-lord test on that date, and seven in ten pass once you widen it to all five houses the question is read from. A test that half the field passes has told you almost nothing about which half of the field you are in.

That is not a fault in the test, and the fix is in the detail a checklist throws away. It matters which lord is running, because the 6th lord bringing a contest forward and the 10th lord bringing standing forward are different events with different consequences. It matters at which level it runs, because a major period colours nineteen years and a third-level period colours a few weeks, and a lord that appears only at the third level on your exam date is a much smaller claim than one running your whole decade. It matters what condition that planet is in, because a debilitated 10th lord running its own period reads differently from an exalted one. And it matters what else the same planet rules in your chart, because with seven classical planets and twelve houses most planets rule two houses and bring both forward together.

None of those four refinements survives being written into a page, because each takes your chart as input. What a page can honestly do is stop you over-reading a checklist that half the hall also passes.

Mars and the Sun in the birth chart

Across the same 10,228 New Delhi charts, this is the condition of the two planets most directly attached to a defence service.

The Sun's four rows land close to an even twelfth each because the Sun moves at a near-constant rate and spends about a month in every sign. Mars does not, and the Mars table is skewed by the particular years sampled rather than by anything about Mars in general. Across the 2,557 days from 2000 to 2006, Mars spent 333 days in Aries and 268 in Scorpio, its two own signs, against only 137 in Capricorn, where it exalts. Mars slows and loops backwards over parts of its two-year circuit, so any sampling window shorter than several circuits over-weights whichever signs it dawdled in. Read the 23.49 percent as a fact about people born in those seven years and not as a general rate.

Two combinations are worth naming. Mars and the Sun both exalted or in their own signs occurs in 370 of the 10,228 charts, 3.62 percent, so a little over one candidate in thirty. And Ruchaka yoga, which forms when Mars is in its own sign or exalted and also occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the rising sign, occurs in 919 charts, 8.99 percent. Ruchaka is the Mars member of the Panch Mahapurusha set, the five combinations the tradition attaches to a life of unusual personal force, and it is the classical marker most often cited for a military career. One candidate in eleven carries it, which makes it worth checking and not worth treating as a verdict.

Mars's house position from the rising sign comes out nearly flat across the cohort, between 7.79 and 8.84 percent per house, and 3,455 charts, or 33.78 percent, have Mars in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th, the four houses this question is read from. A third of the field again. The useful reading is not whether Mars is in one of those houses but which one, in what sign, and whether its period is anywhere near your exam date.

Two candidates born the same day in the same city

The clearest way to see why an exam date cannot be read without a birth time is to compute two charts that differ only in the hour.

Both were born on 17 April 2003 in New Delhi. The first at 05:20, the second at 19:45. Fourteen hours apart. Every slow planet is in the same sign for both: Mars is exalted in Capricorn for both, at 3.08 and 3.44 degrees, and the Sun is exalted in Aries for both, at 2.67 and 3.26 degrees. On a planet-by-planet list they look like the same chart.

They are not the same chart.

Both are in a Jupiter major period on exam day, and it is not the same Jupiter period. The 05:20 chart is four years into a Jupiter run that lasts until 2038. The 19:45 chart is in the final eight months of a Jupiter run that began in 2010 and ends on 6 December 2026, after which a nineteen-year Saturn period starts. A candidate at the beginning of a sixteen-year benefic period and a candidate at the end of one are in different situations even though the same word describes both.

The sub-period splits them further. For the 05:20 chart the Saturn sub-period ends on 24 September 2026, twelve days after the exam. For the 19:45 chart the third-level period changes on 16 October 2026. Those are two different sets of dated boundaries, and a candidate weighing one sitting against another is choosing between exactly this kind of pair.

The house lords split them a third time. For the 05:20 chart the 10th lord is Jupiter, and Jupiter runs the major period, so the ruler of that chart's career house governs its entire current chapter. For the 19:45 chart the 10th lord is the Moon, which governs a two-month stretch that happens to contain the exam date and nothing longer. Same date of birth, same city, and one has the career lord running a sixteen-year period while the other has it running a ten-week one.

The Ruchaka line is the last split. Mars is exalted in Capricorn in both charts. In the 05:20 chart Capricorn is the 11th house, which is not one of the four angles, so there is no Ruchaka. In the 19:45 chart Capricorn is the 4th house, which is an angle, so Ruchaka yoga is present. The identical exalted Mars forms a named classical combination in one chart and not in the other, and the only thing that changed was the clock.

Four more charts, all computed, all different

Born 9 November 2001, 11:05 IST, Jaipur. Sagittarius rising, Moon in Leo at 2.43 degrees in the nakshatra Magha. Mars is exalted in Capricorn in the 2nd house. The Sun is debilitated in Libra in the 11th, so the two defence planets sit at opposite ends of the dignity scale in one chart. The 3rd lord is Saturn, the 6th lord is Venus, the 10th lord is Mercury. On 12 September 2026 this chart runs a Venus major period lasting until August 2027, a Ketu sub-period that began on 1 June 2026, and a Sun third-level period running only from 4 September to 26 September 2026. The exam date falls in the middle of a twenty-two day window governed by the same Sun that is debilitated in the birth chart, while the 6th lord Venus governs the whole two-decade period around it. That is a specific and mixed reading, and no part of it is available from the exam name.

Born 2 August 2004, 16:30 IST, Dehradun. Sagittarius rising again, Moon in Aquarius at 9.94 degrees in Shatabhisha. Mars is in Leo in the 9th house in neutral dignity, the Sun in Cancer in the 8th, also neutral. Neither defence planet is strong or weak, which is the commonest case and the one least often written about. Major period Jupiter to 2034, sub-period Venus from January 2026 to September 2028, third-level Moon from 10 August to 31 October 2026. Venus is this chart's 6th lord, so the competition-house lord governs the entire two-and-a-half-year sub-period the exam sits inside. Transiting Saturn falls in the 2nd from this chart's Moon and transiting Jupiter in the 6th.

Born 24 June 2000, 03:15 IST, Kochi. Aries rising at 26.7 degrees, Moon in Aquarius at 25.52 in Purva Bhadrapada. Mars and the Sun are both in Gemini in the 3rd house, the house of initiative and effort, both neutral in dignity. The 10th lord is Saturn, and this chart is in a Saturn major period running from 2009 to 2028, with a Jupiter sub-period from April 2026 to November 2028 and a Saturn third-level period from 28 August 2026 to 21 January 2027. The career lord runs both the nineteen-year period and the five-month one containing the exam date, which is the strongest form of the three-lord test in this set. It comes with transiting Saturn in the 12th from the rising sign, one of the three houses classical practice reads as difficult ground. A reading that reported only the first half of that would be flattering and incomplete.

Born 30 December 2005, 09:50 IST, Patna. Aquarius rising, Moon in Sagittarius at 1.67 degrees in Moola. Mars is in its own sign Aries in the 3rd house, and Mars is both the 3rd lord and the 10th lord of this chart, because Aquarius rising puts Aries on the 3rd and Scorpio on the 10th and Mars rules both. That is the tightest link between Mars and this question in the whole set. And on 12 September 2026 this chart runs Venus major, Saturn sub and Sun third-level, so Mars is not running a period at any of the three levels. The planet carrying this chart's case for a defence service is strong, doubly placed, and off duty on the day.

That last chart is the one to hold on to. A strong Mars and a running Mars are two different findings, and a page that checks only the first will tell an untrue story about the second.

If you have a choice of sitting

Where a selection offers more than one date and you can choose, the sky gives you dated boundaries to choose against. These are computed and fixed and they apply to everyone.

The sharpest line in that table for a defence candidate is 18 September 2026. Mars spends 2 August to 18 September in Gemini in neutral dignity, and 18 September to 12 November in Cancer, where it is at its weakest sign placement. If two sittings straddle that date and everything else about them is equal, that is a real difference and it is worth knowing.

Everything else in the table takes your chart to become advice, because a transit landing in the 10th from your Moon and one landing in the 8th are not the same event. Your own dated boundaries, the ones that come from your periods rather than from the sky, are the other half and are specific to you. The 05:20 chart above has one on 24 September 2026 and the Patna chart has one on 9 October 2026, and neither is visible in any table that applies to everybody.

What this reading does not reach

A chart is read for the shape and timing of a stretch. It does not sit the paper. Three things stay outside it and are better said here than left for you to find out.

The preparation is the largest single input and stays entirely in your hands. A favourable stretch applied to an unfinished syllabus produces an unfinished syllabus.

The physical and medical standards of a service are fixed thresholds a candidate either meets or does not, and a threshold is not a timing question.

A staged selection needs each stage read on its own date. If your selection has a written paper in September and a later stage in December, those are two dates in two different sub-periods, and reading only the first tells you about the first. Bring every date you have rather than the exam name.

The one thing a reading will state plainly is when a stretch is a hard one. The Kochi chart above is an example: the career lord runs at two levels at once, and transiting Saturn sits in one of the three difficult houses from its rising sign. Both halves are reported. A reading that only ever found good news would not be worth checking against.
