Exams and Your Chart

An exam has a date on it, and a date is the one thing a birth chart can be read against. The year in a headline is not the input. The input is 16 May 2027, or 30 August 2026, or whatever is printed on the admit card, read against the chart of the person who will be sitting in the hall that morning. Change the candidate and the same date reads differently. Change the date and the same candidate reads differently. Everything below is built around those two inputs.

That is also why this page replaces the fourteen exam-and-year pages listed at the bottom. A page written for one exam in one year answers a question that stops existing when the year turns, and it has to guess at the reader instead of reading them. The method here does not expire.

Every position quoted on this page is sidereal, computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa against the Swiss ephemeris, which is the same calculation behind every free tool on this site. Where a date is given, it is a computed ingress or a computed period boundary, not a round number.

The six houses an exam is read from

A house in a Vedic chart is one of twelve segments counted from your lagna, the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Each house carries a department of life, and AstroMedha's education reading is built from six of them:

Three of those six carry most of the weight for a dated exam. The 4th is the foundation the preparation is standing on. The 5th is the intelligence being applied on the day. The 9th is the larger arc of higher study the exam is a gate into. The 6th matters more for a competitive exam than for a school exam, because the 6th is the house of rivals, and an entrance test with a cut-off is a contest against other candidates rather than against a syllabus. The 11th is where a result lands, which is why the result date and the exam date get read as two separate moments rather than one.

That distinction is worth holding on to, because most students ask about the exam and then care about the result. A UPSC prelims paper, its result, the mains paper, its result and the interview are five dated events, and they fall in five different places on the ladder described further down. Reading them as one "UPSC 2027" block averages away the thing you actually wanted to know.

Find your three exam lords without any calculation

Every sign is ruled by a planet. Once you know your lagna, the ruling planets of your 4th, 5th and 9th houses are fixed, and you can read them off the table below. Those three planets are the ones whose periods matter most to a student, because a planet delivers the results of the houses it rules when its own period runs.

If you do not know your birth time, read the table from your Moon sign instead of your lagna. That is the standard fallback and it is what AstroMedha's own education reading does when a birth time is missing, because the Moon sign is fixed by the date and roughly the hour, while the lagna changes every two hours. The houses then count from the Moon rather than from the horizon. It is a coarser frame, and it is still a real one. Your Moon sign is on the free rashi tool; your lagna is on the free kundli tool.

Three rows repeat a planet, and the repetition tells you something rather than being a rounding error. A Libra lagna has Saturn ruling both the 4th and the 5th, so a single planet's period carries the foundation and the applied intelligence together, and a Saturn period is unusually decisive for that student in either direction. An Aquarius lagna has Venus ruling the 4th and the 9th, tying the study base and the higher-study arc to one planet. A Leo lagna has Mars ruling the 4th and the 9th for the same reason. Where one planet holds two of the three, its condition in the chart matters roughly twice as much as it otherwise would, so that is the planet to check first in the next section.

Where Saturn and Jupiter actually are, 2026 to 2030

Saturn and Jupiter are the two slow planets, and they are what turn a chart into a calendar. Jupiter takes about a year to cross a sign and Saturn about two and a half, so between them they define a study season rather than a study week. Both spend part of each year retrograde, which means they appear from Earth to move backward through the zodiac, and a retrograde stretch can carry a planet back into the sign it just left. That is why the runs below reopen.

These are the computed ingress dates, from 26 August 2026 to the end of 2030.

Jupiter

Saturn

Saturn crosses into Aries on 3 June 2027, reverses back into Pisces on 20 October 2027, and settles in Aries from 23 February 2028. A student whose good window opens with that first Aries entry gets it in two instalments rather than one continuous stretch, and the four months in between are the earlier conditions returning, not a new development.

Your lagna, dated

The sky above is the same for every candidate. What differs is which of your houses those signs fall in, and that is decided by your lagna. Below, the four Jupiter placements that matter most to a student, with the lagnas they apply to and the exact dates. The Jupiter tables stop at 25 January 2030 and the Saturn tables at the end of 2030, because that is where the ingress tables above stop; a lagna missing from a table simply does not get that placement inside those dates.

Jupiter in your 5th house, intelligence and applied study. The stretch where new syllabus lands and stays landed, which argues for front-loading the hardest topics into it.

Jupiter in your 9th house, higher learning and teachers. Supportive for a university decision, a new mentor, a research direction or a move abroad to study.

Jupiter in your 11th house, the result arriving. The house of a desire being fulfilled, so it favours the moment of receiving. If you have any say over when an application resolves, this is where to aim it.

Jupiter in your 4th house, the base you learn on. Strong for starting a course, fixing a routine, or changing where you study.

Saturn touches fewer lagnas and holds each one longer. For a competitive exam the useful Saturn is Saturn in the 6th, the house of rivals, because that is the season where endurance beats brilliance and the candidates who out-sit the field are the ones who get through.

Saturn in the 3rd is the season where drilling and timed papers compound more than they usually do, which makes it the stretch to schedule mock tests into.

Saturn in the 4th or the 5th is the heavy one. Material takes longer to go in and progress is hard to feel from inside it, so hours beat inspiration, and a slow patch inside these dates is the transit rather than a change in ability.

The six lagnas absent from all three Saturn tables have Saturn outside the study houses for this whole period, which is neither help nor obstruction. Their exam timing is decided by where Jupiter sits and by the ladder in the next section.

Mercury runs backward nine times before mid-2029

Mercury carries calculation, memory and every piece of paperwork, which makes it the one fast-moving planet that belongs in a study calendar. Its retrograde stretches, computed to the day:

These stretches suit revision, re-reading and re-checking better than new syllabus or a first submission. If a form, a fee or an application deadline falls inside one, verify the details twice before you send it. An exam that lands in one is not a lost cause. It rewards the candidate who has already been over the ground, which is a real distinction and a useful one: it tells a student sitting a February 2027 paper to spend January consolidating rather than opening a new subject.

Notice how often these stretches land on real exam months. Six of the nine fall between January and June, which is where most Indian entrance calendars sit. Treating every one of them as a reason to postpone would mean postponing most attempts, which is why the framing above is about what the stretch suits rather than about avoidance. Board dates are not negotiable, and a candidate whose fixed date falls in a retrograde stretch has a preparation instruction rather than a curse.

What "Mercury is well placed" actually means

Three planets are read as the learning significators, meaning the planets that stand for learning itself whatever houses they happen to rule in a given chart. Mercury governs analysis, memory, calculation and every written paper. Jupiter governs wisdom, teachers, degrees and the sense that the learning means something. The Moon governs the mind itself: concentration, calm, and how steady study feels day to day. Mercury and Jupiter carry the most weight for an exam, and the Moon decides whether the hours you put in are hours you were actually present for. Their condition in your chart is checkable rather than atmospheric, and it comes down to three measurable things.

The sign they occupy. Every planet has one sign where it works at full strength, and a planet sitting in it is called exalted. The sign directly opposite is its debilitation, meaning the sign where the same faculty takes longer to come good than the person's actual ability suggests, and a planet sitting in that one is called debilitated. A planet in its own sign, meaning one of the signs it rules itself, works without being propped up.

A debilitated Mercury is worth knowing about in advance rather than discovering in a mock test. It means analysis and recall arrive later than the effort would predict, so a slow start is the placement and not the ceiling. The practical consequence is that the syllabus wants starting earlier, because the second and third pass over a topic are where it lands.

Their distance from the Sun. A planet is combust when it sits close enough to the Sun to be burnt by it, and the faculty it carries is then easily overshadowed by pressure, ego or a loud room. It shows best in quiet conditions. The orb differs by planet, and these are the values AstroMedha computes with: Mercury 14 degrees, Jupiter 11, Moon 12, Venus 10, Mars 17, Saturn 15. A combust Mercury in a student's chart is a specific instruction rather than a general warning: it argues for full-length timed papers in exam conditions well before the exam, so that the noisy hall is not the first time that faculty has had to work under pressure.

Their direction of travel at birth. A planet is retrograde at birth when it appeared to be moving backward through the zodiac at that moment. For Mercury the classical reading is a mind that works inward and goes back over ground rather than moving in a straight line, so revision suits it and cramming does not. For Jupiter it turns the teacher inward: the understanding tends to come from your own re-reading rather than from the lecture, and you often only trust a thing once you have arrived at it yourself. The two readings are different on purpose. They are not one sentence applied to two planets.

The part a table cannot give you

Everything above can be looked up. The dasha ladder cannot, and it is the part that decides an exam date.

A dasha is a period of life assigned to one planet. Vedic astrology dates a life with the Vimshottari system, a 120-year cycle divided among the nine planets in a fixed order, each getting a fixed number of years:

Where your life starts in that cycle is fixed by your Moon's nakshatra, which is one of the twenty-seven equal segments the zodiac is divided into, each of them owned by one of the same nine planets. Your first period belongs to the owner of the segment your Moon was in, and it starts partly spent: a Moon a quarter of the way through its nakshatra begins life with three quarters of that planet's years still to run. Two people born on the same day at different hours can therefore run different periods for their whole lives, which is why birth time matters more here than anywhere else in a student's chart.

The cycle nests three deep. The mahadasha is the outer period, the one running between six and twenty years. Inside it run nine antardashas, sub-periods sharing out the same span in the same fixed order and proportion. Inside each antardasha run nine pratyantars, sub-periods of the same shape again, each one lasting weeks rather than years. On any given day you are running three lords at once, and an exam date falls inside one specific combination of the three.

That third level is where an exam date lives. A mahadasha lasting a decade cannot tell your prelims from your mains. An antardasha runs anywhere from about four months to about three and a third years depending on which two planets are stacked, so it usually cannot either. A pratyantar runs from about five days to about seven months, with the middle of that range near seven weeks, and at that resolution it lands on one attempt and not the next. It is also the reason a page titled with a year cannot help you: inside "NEET 2027" there are several pratyantars, and they are not alike.

What you are reading, once you have the three lords for your date, is which houses each of them rules and how each one sits in your chart. A pratyantar belonging to your 5th lord, sitting well, is a different morning from a pratyantar belonging to a planet that rules nothing to do with study and sits badly. A worked example, computed end to end

Sample inputs, so the arithmetic below can be checked: born 14 March 2005 at 06:20, New Delhi (28.61 N, 77.21 E, UTC+5:30). Exam date entered by the student: 16 May 2027.

The structure. Aquarius lagna. Moon in Aries, in Bharani nakshatra, in the 3rd house. From an Aquarius lagna the 4th house is Taurus and the 9th is Libra, so Venus rules both, and the 5th house is Gemini, so Mercury rules it. Venus sits in the lagna itself, combust at 4.3 degrees from the Sun against an orb of 10, so the faculty it carries dims under pressure and noise. Mercury sits in Pisces in the 2nd house, debilitated. Jupiter is in Virgo in the 8th house and retrograde at birth. Saturn is in Gemini, which is this chart's 5th house.

What that structure says. Both learning significators are working against something. Mercury, which carries every written paper, is in the sign of its debilitation, so recall and calculation come good later than this student's effort predicts. Jupiter is retrograde and in the 8th, a house of interruption and hidden depth, so teachers and the wider understanding are built rather than handed over, and often arrive later than they do for other people. Of the three significators of learning, Jupiter is the least compromised, which puts this student in the group who learn from a person and a reason rather than from another set of notes. A good teacher or a study group is worth more here than extra hours alone. Nothing on this chart's learning axis came back exalted or in its own sign, so there is no placement carrying the study for free. Saturn sits directly in the 5th house of applied study, which puts weight and discipline on the intelligence rather than ease.

The ladder on the exam date. On 16 May 2027 this chart is running a Moon mahadasha (1 August 2026 to 1 August 2036), a Moon antardasha (1 August 2026 to 2 June 2027), and a Venus pratyantar (28 March 2027 to 17 May 2027). Three facts follow from that and none of them is available from a calendar.

The Moon rules Cancer, which from an Aquarius lagna is the 6th house of rivals and competition, so this student's entire next decade runs under the lord of the competitive house. For a candidate whose target is an entrance exam with a cut-off rather than a qualifying paper, that is the relevant house being activated for ten years, and it argues for choosing a contested field over a safe one.

The Venus pratyantar running on the exam date belongs to the lord of both the 4th and the 9th, the study base and the higher-study arc. Venus is combust, which is the caveat, and it is placed in the lagna, which is the support.

The exam falls on the last full day of that Venus pratyantar. The handover to a Sun pratyantar happens on 17 May 2027, and the Sun period then runs to 2 June 2027. A result or a counselling date falling after 17 May is therefore being read under a different lord from the one that carried the paper, which is the sort of split a reading pitched at a whole year erases entirely.

The sky on the day. Saturn is in Pisces, the 2nd house from this lagna, and from Pisces it aspects Taurus, which is this chart's 4th house, so the study base is under Saturn's weight on the day. Jupiter is in Cancer, the 6th house, and from Cancer it aspects Capricorn, Pisces and Scorpio, none of which is this chart's 4th or 5th house, so there is no Jupiter support on the learning houses that morning. Mercury is direct and in Taurus, the 4th house, alongside the Sun. The nearest Mercury retrograde stretches are 9 February to 3 March 2027 and 10 June to 5 July 2027, so the date itself is clear of both.

The honest part. Saturn transits Pisces until 3 June 2027 and Aries from then, and this student's Moon is in Aries. Saturn moving through the sign before the Moon's, the Moon's own sign, and the one after is called Sade Sati, the roughly seven-and-a-half-year stretch that is felt as fatigue arriving earlier than usual and work feeling heavier than it is. Every one of the twelve months from 26 August 2026 to 26 August 2027 falls inside that season for this chart. The instruction that comes with it is to keep the routine small and unbreakable, protect sleep, and avoid stacking several attempts inside the stretch. It is a season and not a verdict on ability, and the difference matters in practice: the same effort buys less visible progress inside it, so progress has to be measured on the work actually done rather than on how the week felt.

What opens next. Saturn enters Aries on 3 June 2027, which is the 3rd house from an Aquarius lagna, the house of repetition and drill. That begins 18 days after this exam and runs to 20 October 2027, then returns from 23 February 2028. Timed papers and unglamorous repetition compound more than usual in that stretch. Jupiter reaches this chart's 9th house of higher study from 26 December 2028 to 29 March 2029, and again from 25 August 2029 to 25 January 2030. A second attempt planned into the Saturn drill season, with the higher-study decision taken inside one of those two Jupiter stretches, is a different plan from a second attempt made three months after the first one out of momentum.

What the reading gives you instead of a yes or a no

Students ask for a verdict, often in as many words. "Will I clear this exam, give me a yes or no answer." AstroMedha's exam reading never prints a pass or a fail, and that is a decision about who is reading it rather than a limitation of the method. The readers here are nineteen-year-olds and their parents, and telling a nineteen-year-old they will fail is not something we will print. Every window is instead phrased as what the stretch supports: absorbing new material, grinding through revision, results landing, an application going out.

What arrives in place of a verdict is more usable than a verdict would be. The reading names the dated stretch your exam falls in and what that stretch supports; the three period lords running on your date and which of your houses each of them rules; which of your three learning significators is the strongest, which decides whether your hours are better spent on worked problems, with a teacher, or on protecting a routine; and the dated boundaries where the conditions change, so that a choice between two attempt dates has something under it. A yes would have left you with nothing to do differently the following morning.

The reading will also say plainly when a stretch is a hard one. The worked example above is a case of exactly that, and it is published here in place of a flattering chart, because a reading that only ever finds good news is not worth checking.

When the answer is a hard season

A large share of the exam questions AstroMedha receives come from candidates on a second, third or fourth attempt. Some have been at it since 2023. What a chart adds for them is a shape to the difficulty, which is a more useful thing to be handed than encouragement.

A protective stretch such as Sade Sati says the cost of each attempt is higher than usual right now, which argues for one well-prepared attempt rather than three scattered ones, and for putting the biggest attempt after the stretch wherever the calendar allows a choice. A debilitated or combust Mercury says the ramp is longer than the effort suggests, which argues for starting a syllabus earlier rather than working later into the night. A Saturn drill season says repetition is unusually well paid right now, which argues for full-length timed papers over fresh material.

None of those is a prediction, and every one of them changes what a candidate does next week. Someone who has failed four times, and who then reads that their 5th lord is debilitated and that their last three attempts fell inside a protective stretch, has an explanation that does not require them to conclude they are incapable. That last conclusion is the one most of them have already reached on their own, and it is usually the wrong reading of the evidence.

An attempt limit changes the arithmetic and should be said out loud. UPSC aspirants have a fixed number of attempts, and a candidate with two left cannot spend one waiting for a better window. In that case the reading is used to choose which attempt gets the deepest preparation rather than which attempt to skip.
