Dasha Calculator

Find your current Vimshottari Mahadasha and Antardasha. Which planetary chapter are you living through right now?

Birth time is read as IST. Leave blank for noon.

What a Dasha Calculator Tells You

In Vedic astrology your life unfolds in planetary chapters called dashas. The most widely used system is Vimshottari, a 120 year cycle in which each of the nine planets rules you for a fixed span. The planet running your current Mahadasha sets the broad theme of this phase of life, while the Antardasha inside it shapes the year to year detail. This calculator reads the exact position of the Moon at your birth to fix where you stand in that cycle, then maps it forward to today.

The Nine Mahadasha Periods and Their Length

The full Vimshottari cycle runs in a fixed order and totals exactly 120 years. Your birth Moon decides which planet you start in and how much of it was already spent.

Ketu7 years
Venus20 years

Moon10 years

Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar

Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardasha sub periods, and each of those into Pratyantar periods, in the same planetary order. So at any moment three layers are active at once: the major chapter, the sub chapter, and the fine grain underneath. When you read your result above, the Mahadasha is the chapter, the Antardasha is the current section, and the Pratyantar is the paragraph you are living this month.

How to Read Your Result

Look first at your Mahadasha lord. A Jupiter or Venus period tends to expand and soften, a Saturn or Rahu period tends to test and restructure, and Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury and Ketu each carry their own signature. Then read the Antardasha lord against it: a benefic sub period inside a hard Mahadasha brings relief, and a hard sub period inside a gentle Mahadasha brings a passing squeeze. The planet themes here are general. How a period actually lands depends on where that planet sits in your own chart, which is what your full reading shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dasha calculator?

A dasha calculator works out which Vimshottari planetary period you are running right now from your date and time of birth. It uses the Moon's exact position at birth to fix the starting point, then maps the 120 year cycle forward to today so you can see your current Mahadasha and Antardasha.

How do I find my current Mahadasha?

Enter your birth date and, for best accuracy, your birth time. The calculator reads your Moon's nakshatra to set the dasha balance at birth and returns the Mahadasha lord ruling you today, with its start and end dates.

What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?

The Mahadasha is the major planetary period, lasting 6 to 20 years depending on the planet. Inside it run smaller Antardasha sub periods, each ruled by one of the nine planets, which color how that major period actually unfolds month to month.

Is birth time needed for the dasha calculator?

Birth date alone gives a close estimate. Birth time sharpens it, because the Moon moves about one nakshatra a day and the exact degree decides how much of your first Mahadasha had already elapsed at birth. If you do not know your time, the tool reads it as noon.

How accurate is this Vimshottari dasha calculator?

It uses a Swiss-grade sidereal engine, the same calculation method a professional Vedic astrologer uses, so the periods are accurate to the day when your birth time is correct. The planet themes are general, your full chart adds the personal detail.
