Government Job or Private Job: What My Chart Favours

Two people ask this in the same week and mean two different things by it. One is twenty-six, out of work since a contract ended, and wants to know which direction to point. The other has six years in a private company, has watched two batchmates clear a state exam, and is deciding whether to spend the next three years of evenings on preparation. The first is asking what to do next month. The second is asking whether to spend three years.

A chart answers those two questions differently, and it answers neither of them with the word "government". Nothing in a birth chart is labelled with a sector. What the chart carries is the shape of the work: whether your earning runs inside somebody else's structure or on your own account, what kind of authority you work well under, and which years open the door. Sector is a fact about Indian institutions in 2026. Shape is a fact about you, and it is the thing the computation actually holds.

That distinction is the whole page. The classical markers for sarkari naukri, meaning government service, are real, and every one of them is computed below. What they cannot do is sort people by sector, and the measurement further down puts a number on how far short they fall, across 99,927 charts. What is left after that measurement is a smaller answer and a considerably more useful one.

Every position quoted here is sidereal, computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa against the Swiss ephemeris, which is the same calculation behind every free tool on this site. Where a date appears, it is a computed ingress or a computed period boundary.

The four houses this question lives in

A house is one of twelve segments counted from your lagna, the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Four of the twelve carry this particular question, and they carry different pieces of it.

The 6th and the 7th are the pair that decide the fork most readers actually care about. Work sourced from the 6th is employment: you are inside a structure, somebody signs your salary, and the terms are set above you. Work sourced from the 7th is your own account: you face a market or a client list directly, and nobody guarantees the month. A government job and a salaried private job both sit on the 6th. They are the same house.

That is not a technicality, it is where most writing on this question goes wrong. Almost everything written about sarkari naukri yoga is describing the 6th and the 10th, which a private salaried job occupies just as fully. The chart separates employment from self-employment cleanly. It has no way to separate one employer from another, because the difference between a state department and a private firm is a difference in institutions rather than in the geometry of a chart.

The markers, and where each one comes from

Four planets and their relationships to those houses make up every list of government-service combinations you will find, including the two AstroMedha pages this one replaces. Here they are with their sources, so that nothing on this page rests on assertion.

The Sun. In AstroMedha's own dasha tables the Sun's keywords are leadership, recognition, father, government, health, ego and soul purpose, and its favourable outcomes include government favour. The Sun stands for the sovereign and for anything backed by sovereign power, which in a modern reading covers the state, the uniform, the seal and the office. A Sun that is strong and well placed is read as a person who works comfortably where authority is visible and named.

Saturn. Saturn carries discipline, structure, and slow durable building. Where the career reading names what Saturn pays through, the sentence is that your work pays best through staying: long service, and structure that lasts. Rules, hierarchy, seniority, fixed procedure and a pension are Saturn's territory, which is why every list pairs Saturn with the Sun for this question.

The 10th lord. Every sign is ruled by a planet, and the planet ruling the sign on your 10th house is your 10th lord. Where it sits and how well it sits is the strongest single statement a chart makes about the position you hold.

The 6th lord and the 11th lord. The 6th lord is the planet ruling your house of employment and competition. The 11th lord rules gains. A link between those two and the 10th is the classical marker for an appointment that actually arrives rather than an ambition that stays an ambition.

That is the standard fallback and it is what AstroMedha's own career reading does when a birth time is missing, because the Moon sign is fixed by the date and roughly the hour while the lagna changes every two hours. Three things fall out of that table that are worth reading off it before you go further, because each one changes how your own row behaves.

No lagna has one planet ruling both the 6th and the 10th. Across all twelve rows the job and the position are always two different lords, so the planet that brings you employment and the planet that carries your standing are never the same planet, and their periods therefore fall in different years of your life. A chart cannot deliver the job and the rank in one stroke.

Only one lagna has a single planet ruling both the 10th and the 11th, and that is Aries, where Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius together. For an Aries lagna the position and the appointment are carried by one Saturn, so a Saturn period is decisive in both directions at once and a weak Saturn costs twice.

Two lagnas have one planet ruling both the 10th and the 7th: Gemini, where Jupiter rules Pisces and Sagittarius, and Sagittarius, where Mercury rules Virgo and Gemini. For those two the position and the open market are the same lord, which is a structural reason their charts often refuse to settle the employment question, and the worked pair at the end of this page are both Gemini for exactly that reason.

Now the part almost nobody does: measuring the markers

A marker is only informative if it is uncommon. If a combination appears in most charts, being told you have it tells you almost nothing about yourself, because it is telling nearly everyone the same thing.

So the markers were measured. A study was run for this page over 99,927 computed charts: births drawn at random between 1985 and 2005, uniform random clock time, across ten Indian cities, each one run through the same sidereal engine that computes the free tools, with houses counted whole-sign from the lagna. Every marker below is a mechanical test on that chart, and the percentage is the share of the 99,927 that passed it.

A few words in the table below are worth fixing once, because the rest of the page leans on them. A planet is exalted, meaning it stands in the one sign where it works at full strength. It is in its own sign, meaning one of the signs it rules itself, where it works without being propped up. And the sign opposite its exaltation is its debilitation, meaning the placement where the faculty that planet carries takes longer to come good than the person's ability suggests; a planet standing there is called debilitated. Those states together are a planet's dignity, meaning how much of what it carries actually arrives.

Read the first row and the last two together. Saturn "influences the 10th house" in nearly half of all charts, because influence in that formulation includes an aspect, and Saturn aspects three signs from wherever it stands. Saturn is actually standing in the 10th in one chart in twelve. Those two sentences describe the same planet and they are not the same claim, and the looser one is the one that gets printed, including on the two pages this one replaces.

The joint picture is worse for the folklore. Taking seven of the core markers together, here is how many of them a chart carries:

The average chart carries two, and 90.2% of all charts carry at least one. An astrologer who wants to find a government-service marker in your chart will find one nine times out of ten, and the finding is honest each time. It is the inference from the finding that fails.

The test that actually breaks the folklore

Frequency alone would leave an argument open: perhaps a common marker still tilts the odds. So the markers were tested against a second, independent read of the same charts.

AstroMedha's career reading computes the sub-lord of the 10th house cusp. That method divides each nakshatra, meaning each of the twenty-seven equal segments of the zodiac, into nine unequal sub-divisions in the Vimshottari proportions, and reads which planet owns the exact sub-division your 10th cusp falls in. That planet's own signified houses then decide what the career runs on. When the chain touches the 6th, the reading is salaried or in service, working inside somebody's structure. When it touches the 7th, the reading is on your own account, dealing directly with clients or a market. It is a different rule from the markers above, applied to the same birth minute, which makes it a fair second opinion.

Across the 99,927 charts, that second opinion lands like this:

Now take only the 14,950 charts that carry the headline combination, the Sun and Saturn both connected to the 10th, and ask what their 10th cusp says.

The combination named for government service leaves a chart less likely to read as salaried and more likely to read as own-account. Run the comparison the other way and it comes out the same: of the 33,283 charts whose 10th cusp reads as employment, 14.6% carry the Sun-Saturn combination, against 15.0% of all charts. The marker and the route are close to independent.

One more, because "strong 10th house" is the other phrase people are handed. A 10th lord that is both dignified and angular is a genuinely strong 10th house, and 11.9% of charts have one. Their routes split 18.9% salaried, 25.1% own account, 15.7% both, 40.2% undecided, which is the base rate again to within a percentage point. A strong 10th house says your position holds, and says nothing whatever about who signs the letter.

So here is the finding this page exists to publish, stated plainly: the classical government-service markers describe the kind of authority a person carries, not the sector that employs them. A Sun linked to your 10th house says you work well where the call is yours and people know it was. Saturn linked to your 10th says you are paid for staying. Both of those are true of a deputy collector and equally true of a factory manager who never sat an exam, and no arrangement of them in a birth chart knows which of the two you are looking at.

Two follow-ups arrive often enough to answer here. "State or central" is a finer version of the question the measurement above already answered, and the chart has less to say about it rather than more: the line between a state commission and a central one is administrative, and no planetary configuration tracks an administrative boundary. "Will I get one or not" is answerable as timing and not as a verdict, because a public appointment is won by clearing a contested process that several hundred thousand other charts are sitting in at the same time. What the chart can tell you is which years put you in the strongest position inside that contest, and that is what the second half of this page computes.

Two honest limits on the numbers above, because they change how far you should carry them. The births were sampled uniformly across the clock, and real births are not uniform across the clock, so these percentages describe the geometry of charts rather than the birth-time distribution of any real population. And nothing in the study links a chart to whether that person actually holds a government job, because no such data exists here. The study measures how the markers behave against each other and against the engine's second method, which is the claim being made, and it is not a claim about outcomes.

What the chart does decide

Three answers survive the measurement, and all three are more useful than the one you came for.

The route. Employment or your own account, from the 10th cusp sub-lord chain described above. It is decided by the exact sub-division your 10th cusp falls in, which moves with the birth minute, so it is unavailable to anyone without your time of birth. Notice from the table above that it declines to decide for 40.7% of charts. A method that answers four questions in ten and says so is more useful than one that always answers, and if your chart is one of the four, the honest reading is that the fork is genuinely open for you and should be decided on the rest of your life rather than on your chart.

The kind of authority that suits you. This is the Sun and Saturn read, put back in its proper place. A dignified Sun connected to the 10th argues for work where your judgement is visible and attributable, which a uniform satisfies and a role whose numbers are yours to answer for satisfies equally. A dignified Saturn connected to the 10th argues for work that rewards staying, where seniority and process are real and the ten-year view pays. Where both are weak, the argument is for work with a short feedback loop and a visible output, because neither long service nor formal authority is doing the carrying.

The years the door opens. This is the part with dates on it, and it is the half of the answer that the person asking "when will I get a government job" was actually reaching for. It comes from the dasha ladder, and the rest of this page is how to read it.

The ladder that puts dates on it

A dasha is a period of life assigned to one planet. Vedic astrology dates a life with the Vimshottari system, a 120-year cycle divided among the nine planets in a fixed order, each getting a fixed number of years:

Where your life starts in that cycle is fixed by the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth, each of the twenty-seven owned by one of the same nine planets. Your first period belongs to the owner of your Moon's segment and it starts partly spent, so a Moon a quarter of the way through its nakshatra begins life with three quarters of that planet's years still to run. Two people born on the same day at different hours can therefore run different periods for their whole lives.

The cycle nests. The mahadasha is the outer period, six to twenty years long. Inside it the same span is shared out again among the nine planets in the same order and proportion, and each of those nine sub-periods is called an antardasha, running from months to a few years. Inside each antardasha the division happens once more, and each of those nine is called a pratyantar, running from weeks to months. On any given day three lords are running at once, and a date belongs to one specific combination of the three.

What you read, once you have your three lords for a date, is which of your houses each of them rules. This is where the table earlier in this page starts paying. If the antardasha running in 2029 belongs to the planet that rules your 6th house of employment, that is a period whose subject is a job, whatever else is going on. If it belongs to your 7th lord, the period's subject is clients and the open market. If your 6th lord and your 11th lord are the same planet, which happens for a Gemini lagna and a Sagittarius lagna, then that planet's periods carry both the job and the gain from it, and they are the years to aim an application at.

Where Saturn and Jupiter sit on your 10th house, 2026 to 2031

Transits are the second timing layer, and unlike the dasha they are the same sky for everyone. What differs is which of your houses those signs fall in. Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign, Jupiter about a year, so together they set a career season rather than a career week. Both spend part of each year retrograde, meaning they appear from Earth to move backward through the zodiac, which can carry a planet back into the sign it just left. That is why the runs below reopen.

The computed sign runs, from 26 August 2026 to 31 March 2031:

Saturn sitting in your 10th house is the season where the position is carried by delivery rather than by movement. Effort goes in and visible reward lags, which reads from inside as being stuck and reads from outside as being reliable. It suits consolidating, qualifying, and finishing what is half done. It is a poor season for job-hopping on impulse and a reasonable one for preparing an exam, because the preparation is exactly the kind of unglamorous accumulation Saturn pays for.

Saturn also aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th signs from wherever it stands, and an aspect on the 10th carries a lighter version of the same weight.

A Scorpio lagna appears in neither table. Saturn stays clear of that chart's 10th house for the whole five years, which is neither help nor obstruction, and its timing is decided by the dasha ladder and by Jupiter instead.

Saturn sitting in your 6th house is the competition season, and for anyone sitting a public exam it matters more than the 10th-house season above. The 6th is the house of rivals, and a contest with a cut-off is a contest against other candidates rather than against a syllabus. Endurance out-earns brilliance inside it, which favours the candidate who out-sits the field.

Jupiter sitting in your 10th house is the opposite texture: the season where scope arrives, a title is available, and asking is better received than usual. It rewards visibility and a bigger remit, and it is the stretch to put a move, an application or a negotiation inside if the choice of month is yours.

Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself, so the six lagnas absent from that table still receive Jupiter on the 10th by aspect at some point in these five years. The occupation is the stronger of the two and is what the table above lists.

The Sun crosses your 10th house once a year, for about a month, and it is the one annual window everybody gets. It is short and it is not a season, so treat it as the month to be seen rather than the month to change your life: send the application, ask for the meeting, put your name on the piece of work. The chart most people never look at

The birth chart is one of several charts computable from the same birth moment. The one built for work is the D-10, the dasamsa, made by dividing each sign into ten parts of three degrees each and reading which sign each part maps to. A planet's condition in the D-10 is a statement about the person's professional life specifically, where its condition in the birth chart is a statement about the whole life.

This matters here more than anywhere, because the D-10 disagrees with the birth chart constantly. Measured over the same 99,927 charts: Saturn's dignity in the D-10 differs from its dignity in the birth chart in 55.2% of charts, and the Sun's differs in 40.9%. So in more than half of charts, a statement about Saturn's dignity taken from the birth chart alone does not carry over to the chart that describes the working life, and the reader has been told something true about their life in general and misleading about their job. Read across the population, the Sun ends up exalted or in its own sign in 16.7% of D-10 charts and Saturn in 25.9%.

The division rule is arithmetic you can do yourself in a minute. Take any planet's degree within its sign from the free kundli tool, find the sign's starting point below, then advance one sign for every completed three degrees.

Worked, so the arithmetic can be checked: a lagna at 20.1 degrees of Gemini has completed six full three-degree steps, so it lands in the seventh division. Gemini starts its own count at Gemini, and six steps forward from Gemini is Sagittarius. That chart's D-10 lagna is Sagittarius, and its professional life is read from a Sagittarius rising rather than a Gemini one.

Once you have your D-10 lagna, the sign on its 10th house and the ruler of that sign are the two things to look at, and the D-10 dasamsa guide covers what each of the twelve carries. A D-10 read cannot be done from a date alone. It moves with the birth minute, because three degrees of lagna is roughly twelve minutes of clock time.

Two charts, the same lagna, opposite answers

Both charts below are Gemini rising, so both have Pisces on the 10th house, Jupiter as 10th lord, Mars ruling both the 6th and the 11th, and Mercury ruling the lagna. Every structural fact in the lords table is identical for the two of them. Their answers to this page's question are not.

The March chart: the route says service

Gemini lagna at 20.1 degrees, in Punarvasu nakshatra. The Moon is in Virgo, in Hasta, in the 4th house.

Three planets sit in the 10th house of Pisces: Saturn, Mars and Mercury. Mars is the 6th lord of employment and the 11th lord of gains, and it is standing in the house of career, which is the classical link this page measured at 15.5% across the population. Mercury is the lagna lord and it is debilitated in Pisces, meaning it sits in the sign where it works furthest below its ability, so this person's own presentation of themselves arrives weaker than their capability. Mars is combust, meaning near enough to the Sun to be burnt by it, at 13.9 degrees against an orb of 17, which dims the drive it carries when the room is loud.

Jupiter, the 10th lord, sits in the 9th house in Aquarius, and Saturn sits in Jupiter's own sign of Pisces, so the two are in each other's signs. That mutual exchange is called parivartana, and it means the question of what the career finally serves circles between the two planets instead of resolving on one. In practice it reads as a working life repeatedly redefined by the same two concerns, in this chart meaning and security.

The Jaimini system ranks the seven planets by how far each has travelled into its sign. The highest is the Atmakaraka, meaning the marker of the self and what the life keeps circling back to, and the second is the Amatyakaraka, meaning the marker of the working life and how the self earns its living. Here the Amatyakaraka is Saturn, in the 10th house. Its statement about work is that this person does best building the structure, the system or the practice that is still standing in ten years.

The 10th cusp falls in Pisces, in Uttara Bhadrapada, with Saturn as its star lord and Mars as its sub-lord. That chain signifies the 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses. It touches the 6th and not the 7th, so the route reads salaried or in service, working inside somebody's structure, and it pays through owning the hard, unloved job. The 8th in the chain is the caveat: interruptions and stalls are part of this career's shape rather than an accident of it.

When. This chart runs a Rahu mahadasha from 29 September 2013 to 30 September 2031. Inside it, a Venus antardasha runs to 18 April 2028, and Venus rules the 5th and 12th houses here and sits in the 8th, so it is not a period whose subject is a job. The Sun antardasha follows, 18 April 2028 to 12 March 2029, then the Moon to 11 September 2030. Then comes the one to mark: Mars, 11 September 2030 to 30 September 2031, the lord of both the 6th house of employment and the 11th house of gains, sitting in the 10th house of career. That is this chart's employment-and-appointment period, and it is dated. The Jupiter mahadasha that begins on 30 September 2031 hands the next sixteen years to the 10th lord itself, opening with a Jupiter antardasha to 17 November 2033.

Saturn sits in this chart's 10th house from now to 3 June 2027 and again from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028, which is a consolidation stretch rather than a moving one. A candidate here preparing for a public exam is preparing inside the right transit and ahead of the right period, and the honest reading is that the years 2030 and 2031 carry the appointment more strongly than 2027 does.

The June chart: the route says own account

Gemini lagna at 10.8 degrees, in Ardra nakshatra. The Moon is in Aries, in Bharani, in the 11th house.

Jupiter, the 10th lord, sits in the 10th house itself in Pisces, its own sign. That is close to the strongest statement a chart makes about the 10th house, because the planet responsible for the position is standing in the position, in a sign it rules. It forms Hamsa Yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha combinations, which is Jupiter dignified in an angular house. Mercury, the lagna lord, is in its own sign of Gemini in the 1st house, forming Bhadra Yoga, which is the same rule applied to Mercury. Two of the five great-person combinations in one chart, both on the axis this question cares about. Mercury is combust too, at 12.5 degrees against an orb of 14, so the skill it carries shows better in a considered piece of work than in a room where somebody louder is talking.

If a strong 10th house meant government service, this chart would be the case for it. Its 10th cusp says otherwise. The cusp falls in Aquarius, in Purva Bhadrapada, star lord Jupiter, sub-lord Venus, and the chain signifies the 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 12th houses. It touches the 7th and not the 6th, so the route reads on your own account, dealing directly with clients or a market, and it pays where taste and trust decide what the work is worth.

Saturn here is debilitated in Aries in the 11th house, meaning the planet of long service and structure is in the sign where it functions furthest below its ability, which argues against a working life whose value is seniority.

The debilitation is cancelled here, by the classical rule called Neecha Bhanga. That rule fires on either of two conditions: the debilitated planet's dispositor, meaning the ruler of the sign it is standing in, sitting in an angular house, or the planet that takes its exaltation in that sign sitting in one. It is the second that applies here. Saturn's dispositor is Mars, which stands in the 12th and is no angle. Aries is the Sun's exaltation sign, and the Sun stands in the 1st. The tradition reads a cancelled debilitation as strength won through early struggle rather than strength handed over, and this Saturn stands in the 11th house of gains and network payoffs, so what recovers is the return on who this person knows rather than the return on how long they have served. The Amatyakaraka is the Moon in the 11th, whose statement about work is looking after people, reading a room, and keeping the human side of the work whole.

When. A Mars mahadasha ended on 8 July 2026 and a Rahu mahadasha now runs to 8 July 2044, opening with a Rahu antardasha to 21 March 2029. Rahu owns no sign, so it acts through where it sits, which here is the 3rd house of initiative and skill-building. The period to mark is the next one: Jupiter, 21 March 2029 to 14 August 2031, the 10th lord in its own sign in the 10th house, and also the 7th lord of clients and the open market. For a chart whose route reads own-account, a Jupiter period carrying both the position and the market is the window where the practice, the firm or the client base is built. Saturn's antardasha follows it, 14 August 2031 to 20 June 2034, and Saturn is the debilitated one, so the structure built in the Jupiter years is what has to carry that stretch.

What the pair proves

Same lagna, same 10th sign, same 10th lord, same house lords down the whole chart. One reads as employment inside a structure, the other as own account. What separated them was where each 10th cusp fell inside its nakshatra, which moves with the birth minute, and which nakshatra each Moon occupied, which fixes the whole dasha ladder. The second chart is also the one with the stronger 10th house by every classical measure, and it is the one that reads as own account. No general statement about a strong 10th house could have told you that.

If you are jobless right now

The most common version of this question arrives from someone with no job at all, and a page about three-year decisions is the wrong shape for that. Four things are worth separating.

The next job and the eventual career are different questions with different answers, and running them together is what makes the search feel hopeless. The transit tables above tell you what the next twelve months support. The dasha ladder tells you what the next decade is for. It is common and unremarkable for those two to disagree, and when they do, the instruction is to take the job the year supports while pointing preparation at the period the ladder marks.

An exam is a dated event, and a dated event can be read against a chart far more precisely than a sector can. If you have an admit card with a date on it, that date falls inside one specific pratyantar, and that is a sharper reading than anything on this page. Exams and your chart is where that reading is set out, and it is the page to use for a specific attempt.

The 6th house is the house of employment and of rivals together, and for someone out of work that pairing is the useful part rather than a curiosity. Periods and transits that light the 6th are periods when contested processes move: applications, interviews, selections, and the sheer grind of applying. A 6th-lord period is not a comfortable one and it is the one where employment is actually on the table.

Attempt limits change the arithmetic and should be said out loud. A candidate with two attempts left cannot spend one waiting for a better window. In that case the reading is used to decide which attempt gets the deepest preparation, not which attempt to skip.

What the reading gives you instead of a yes or a no
