NEET PG and MDS: Reading Your Attempt Against Your Dasha

A candidate wrote to us: "I didn't got selected in neet since 2023 -2026 so tell me clearly was 2027 my only year for sureshot selection and the previous years were not ??"

The honest answer is that no Vedic method marks one guaranteed year and rules out the others, and a chart that claimed to would be lying to you. What the method does produce is narrower and more usable: a dated map of which planetary period you are running on your paper date, which period covers each counselling round, and where the two slow planets sit relative to the six houses that carry study in your own chart. That map differs for every candidate sitting the same paper, and the differences are large enough to change what you do with the twelve months before it.

The public half of that map is below, computed rather than asserted. If you know your rising sign you can read your own dated windows out of it without entering anything.

What a chart is actually asked, when the question is an entrance exam

Six houses carry study in Vedic astrology, and the AstroMedha education engine reads all six rather than the one or two that usually get quoted. They are counted from your lagna, which is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born.

For a postgraduate medical or dental entrance the 6th house does more work than it does for a school exam, because an entrance is a ranking contest rather than a pass mark. You are not being measured against a syllabus, you are being measured against the other candidates, and the 6th is the house that governs that. The 11th matters for a similar structural reason. Your seat does not arrive on the day you write the paper, it arrives at a counselling round some months later, and the 11th is the house of the thing you worked for turning up.

Three planets carry learning as significators, which means their condition describes the faculty itself rather than one area of life. Mercury carries analysis, memory, calculation and every written paper. Jupiter carries wisdom, teachers, degrees and the sense that learning is for something. The Moon carries the mind itself: concentration, calm, and how steady study feels day to day.

Then there is the timing layer, which is where "was 2027 my only year" actually lives. Vimshottari, which is the 120-year cycle of planetary periods that Vedic astrology times a life by, divides your life into nine major periods called mahadashas. Inside each mahadasha runs an antardasha, which is a sub-period ruled by each of the nine planets in turn. Inside each of those runs a pratyantar, which is a sub-period one level smaller again. The starting point of the whole ladder is fixed by the nakshatra, which is the 27-part lunar division your Moon occupied at birth, and by how far through that division the Moon had already travelled. That last detail is why birth time matters so much here, and it is measured further down.

The sky over the whole NEET PG and MDS attempt cycle, computed

Saturn and Jupiter are the two planets slow enough to define a study season rather than a week. Here is where they are, walked day by day through the engine.

Saturn

Jupiter

Rahu and Ketu, the two lunar nodes, always sit exactly opposite each other. Rahu is in Aquarius and Ketu in Leo until 5 December 2026, then Rahu in Capricorn and Ketu in Cancer until 24 June 2028, then Rahu in Sagittarius and Ketu in Gemini.

Two of those placements carry a dignity, which is the classical strength a planet has in a given sign. This chart shows Jupiter in Cancer as exalted, meaning it sits in the sign where it is strongest, so the two spans from 2 June 2026 to 30 October 2026 and from 25 January 2027 to 25 June 2027 hold the strongest Jupiter of this whole cycle. It returns Saturn in Aries as debilitated, which is the opposite case: Aries is the sign where Saturn is weakest, so from 3 June 2027 Saturn runs at low strength apart from the four months it spends back in Pisces.

The return to Pisces on 20 October 2027 happens because Saturn is retrograde, meaning it appears to move backwards against the zodiac for part of each year. It is worth noticing rather than skipping, because it splits what looks like one continuous Saturn season into two, with a four-month gap in the middle that shows up in the worked charts further down.

Neither of those facts is good or bad on its own, and this is where most exam astrology goes wrong. An exalted Jupiter transiting your 12th house of loss and a debilitated Saturn transiting your 6th house of rivals are, for a candidate, close to the reverse of what the two adjectives suggest. Strength describes how forcefully a planet delivers what it is delivering. Which house it delivers to is set by your rising sign, which is the next table.

Your rising sign already tells you your dated windows

What follows is usable without giving us anything. Transiting Jupiter on your 5th house supports taking new material in. On your 9th it supports teachers, higher study and moving further from home. On your 11th it favours the moment a result lands, which for this exam means counselling and seat allotment. Transiting Saturn on your 6th is the useful Saturn for an entrance, because the 6th is the house of rivals and endurance beats brilliance there. Saturn on your 4th or 5th is heavy going in the learning houses themselves.

Every span below comes from a daily walk through the engine from 1 June 2026 to 30 June 2029.

Cancer rising is the one row with nothing in it, and that is a real result rather than a gap in the data. Jupiter spends this whole cycle in Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra, which from a Cancer ascendant are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th houses, so it never reaches the three houses this table tracks. Saturn spends it in Pisces and Aries, the 9th and 10th from Cancer. A Cancer-rising candidate is not badly placed, they are placed somewhere this particular table does not look, and their read has to come from the dasha ladder and from Jupiter's arrival on the ascendant itself.

One caution before you use the table. It is built on Whole-Sign houses, where each house is one whole sign counted from the rising sign, which is the system AstroMedha computes in throughout. A chart drawn in a different house system can place a planet one house away from where this table puts it. It is also read from the rising sign, so it needs your birth time to be right. If your time is a family estimate rounded to the nearest hour, treat the boundary dates as approximate rather than exact, and read the section on birth-time sensitivity below before you plan around them.

Mercury retrograde and the counselling paperwork

Mercury carries calculation, memory and every piece of paperwork, so its retrograde spans, meaning the periods where it appears to move backwards against the zodiac, are the one fast-planet event that belongs in an exam calendar. Every span between 2026 and 2028, from the engine:

What to do with them is narrow, and the narrowness is deliberate. These weeks suit revision, re-reading and re-checking better than first-pass syllabus. If a registration form, a fee payment, a document upload or a choice-filling deadline falls inside one, verify the details twice before you submit. That is the whole instruction.

What not to do with them matters more. Your paper date is set by the board and you cannot move it, so a page that tells you your fixed exam date is cursed has frightened you for no gain. An exam that lands inside one of these spans is not a lost cause. It rewards the candidate who has already been over the ground, which is the same candidate it would have rewarded anyway.

Counselling is a window, not a moment, and your ladder moves inside it

Seat allotment for NEET PG and MDS runs through multiple counselling rounds over months rather than on a single day, so asking "what is my dasha on the exam date" answers less than half the question. The period ladder keeps turning while counselling runs.

We measured that. Taking 2,192 charts of candidates born between 1996 and 2004 and a 120-day window, which is a realistic length for a full counselling cycle:

• 92.56% pass through two or more pratyantar periods inside those 120 days. Only 163 charts of 2,192, or 7.44%, sit in a single one the whole way through.
• The median count is three. 37.59% cross two, 28.38% cross three, 13.09% cross four, and 13.50% cross five or more.
• The median pratyantar length in that sample is 56 days, with a mean of 71.8 days and a range from 5 days to 202 days.
• 21.03% also change antardasha inside the same 120 days, so for one candidate in five the sub-period lord itself turns over between the result and the last round.

The practical consequence is that a candidate whose paper date falls in a supportive sub-period may be in a different one by the time their allotment comes round, and the reverse holds too. If you are reading your own chart against this exam, read the whole span from the paper date to the last counselling round rather than the paper date alone.

Why your birth time decides this, and by how much

Everything above is the same sky for every candidate. What differs is where that sky falls in your chart and which period you are running while it does, and both of those are set by your birth time to a degree that is easy to underestimate.

We computed the size of it. Across 3,288 birth dates from 1996 to 2004, comparing a birth at 00:00 with a birth at 23:59 on the same date, casting both for New Delhi:

• The mahadasha lord running on 1 July 2027 differs on 2,539 of the 3,288 dates, or 77.22%. Two candidates born on the same date, one just after midnight and one just before the next, are usually in different major periods altogether during the same exam year.
• The antardasha lord differs on 2,792 dates, or 84.91%.

The reason is arithmetic rather than mystery. The Moon covers about 13 degrees a day and a nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes, so the Moon changes nakshatra within almost every single date. The nakshatra fixes which planet's period you are born into and how much of it had already elapsed, so the entire ladder shifts underneath.

The rising sign moves faster still, and it decides where every transit lands. Taking 1,880 same-date pairs at four different times of day:

Two candidates born in the same hospital on the same morning, thirty minutes apart, get a different read almost a quarter of the time. This is why the second half of this page needs your details and cannot be written in advance, and it is also why finding your actual birth time is worth the phone call. If your certificate says 4am and your mother says it was closer to 5, that gap is large enough to change the answer.

What candidates your age are actually running

The dasha ladder is not evenly spread across an age cohort, because the cycle is 120 years long and everyone born in a given decade sits at a similar point on it. Sampling 8,768 charts of births from 1996 to 2004 and reading the ladder as of 1 July 2027:

Rahu and Jupiter together cover 39.97% of the cohort. That is not an accident of this sample. Rahu runs 18 years and Jupiter 16, two of the long periods in the cycle, so a wide age band falls inside them at once.

Three more numbers from the same sample bear directly on the question this page is named after:

• 41.70% have either the mahadasha lord or the antardasha lord ruling their 5th or 9th house on 1 July 2027. Those are the houses of intelligence and higher learning, so for two candidates in five the period lord itself is a study lord. The individual rates are 11.05% for the 5th lord as mahadasha lord, 11.10% for the 9th, and 11.28% for the 6th lord of competition.
• 15.21% change mahadasha entirely between 1 June 2026 and 30 June 2028, and 87.51% cross at least one antardasha boundary in the same 25 months. Only 12.49% sit inside one unchanged sub-period across the whole window.
• 33.35% have Saturn crossing the 12th, 1st or 2nd house from their Moon at some point in this cycle, which is the span classically called Sade Sati and which the engine flags as a season to protect the routine rather than to stack attempts.

That second bullet is the direct answer to "was 2027 my only year for sureshot selection". For seven candidates in eight the ladder moves at least once inside a two-year window, so the configuration that governed a 2026 attempt is usually not the one governing a 2028 attempt. A single year is almost never the only year, structurally, and anyone who tells you it is has stopped reading the chart.

Two further population figures come from the 26,304-chart birth-time sample. 65.07% get transiting Jupiter onto their 5th or 11th house at some point between June 2026 and June 2029, and 19.37% get Saturn onto their 6th house of competition. Neither is rare, and neither is a verdict.

The same sky, two real charts, two different reads

Here are two charts computed end to end so you can see what changes. Both are real birth moments, named in full so anyone can reproduce them in the free kundli tool. Both candidates would be sitting the same paper.

Chart A: 12 March 2000, 04:20 IST, Lucknow

Capricorn rising at 17.99 degrees, in the nakshatra Shravana. The Moon sits at 10.28 degrees of Taurus, in Rohini, in the 5th house, and it is exalted, meaning Taurus is the sign where the Moon is classically strongest.

The learning houses read as follows. The 5th of intelligence is Taurus, its lord Venus sits in the 2nd, and the exalted Moon sits in the house itself. The 6th of rivals is Gemini and the 9th of higher learning is Virgo, and both are ruled by Mercury, which sits in the 2nd and is retrograde. One planet therefore carries both the competition and the higher study in this chart, which is a structural feature rather than a coincidence of this example: the 6th and 9th are three signs apart, and Mercury is one of the two planets whose two signs sit three apart. The 4th of the study base is Aries, holding Jupiter and a debilitated Saturn.

The engine's read of the three learning significators: the Moon exalted in the 5th, so concentration is one of the strong parts of this chart; Mercury retrograde, which classically describes a mind that works inward and goes back over ground rather than moving in a straight line, so revision suits it and cramming does not; Jupiter carrying no dignity flag either way, so it works at ordinary strength. This chart shows one education yoga here, Budha-Aditya, which is Sun and Mercury together and reads as sharp analysis and communication. Its summary of the study style is "You learn in a settled routine", led by the Moon, with the note that output tracks state more than effort in this chart, so a fixed place, a fixed hour and protected sleep do more than adding hours to a chaotic week.

The dasha ladder across the window, computed to the day:

The pratyantar sequence covering the closing year of that Mercury antardasha runs Rahu to 27 Sep 2026, Jupiter to 29 Jan 2027, then Saturn to 26 Jun 2027. Note what that means for this candidate. The sub-period lord until mid-2027 is Mercury, which is the lord of both their 6th of competition and their 9th of higher learning. That is a computed alignment between the period and the question, and it is exactly the kind of thing no general page can tell anyone.

The dated windows the chart shows for this chart, from 1 June 2026 over 25 months:

This candidate is not in Sade Sati today. They enter it on 3 June 2027, and it pauses between 20 October 2027 and 23 February 2028 while Saturn retreats into Pisces. That pause is an actionable date pair, and it exists only because Saturn turns retrograde at a particular longitude, which is the kind of detail a calendar reading "Saturn in Aries from June 2027" flattens away.

Chart B: 7 September 1998, 19:05 IST, Kochi

Pisces rising at 1.97 degrees, in Purva Bhadrapada. The Moon sits at 5.98 degrees of Pisces, in Uttara Bhadrapada, in the 1st house.

The 6th house of rivals holds four planets here, and its lord the Sun sits in it in its own sign. That is a lord at home rather than a lord displaced, and the engine reads it as this part of study running on its own terms rather than depending on somewhere else in the chart. It is not viparita. Viparita is the lord of one difficult house sitting in ANOTHER of them, and it is the case where rivals and obstacles cancel each other out; a 6th lord in the 6th is a different placement with a different meaning. The reading that follows from the one this chart actually has is the harder and more useful of the two: a well-placed lord in the house of rivals means the competition is real and has to be beaten on effort rather than dissolving on its own. For a ranking exam that is a description of the work, and it is still the strongest single feature of this chart, because the house that decides a ranking contest is the one being run by a planet at full strength.

Elsewhere the reading is mixed, and it says so. The 5th of intelligence is Cancer, its lord the Moon sits in the 1st, and a debilitated Mars sits in the house itself. The 9th of higher learning is Scorpio and its lord is that same debilitated Mars. The 4th of the study base is Gemini, its lord Mercury sits in the 6th, and the engine's read is that this part of study comes through contest rather than ease, so it gets won by out-working the field rather than by finding it easy. The 11th of the result arriving is Capricorn, its lord Saturn debilitated in the 2nd.

The engine detects three education yogas here where Chart A had one. Gajakesari, which is Jupiter sitting in an angle from the Moon and reads as resilience and recovery after adversity. Budha-Aditya again. And Hamsa, which is Jupiter dignified in an angular house. Jupiter is in its own sign in the 1st and retrograde, which the engine reads as a teacher turned inward, where understanding comes from your own re-reading rather than from the lecture. Its study-style summary is "You learn from a teacher and a why", led by Jupiter, with the note that a good teacher or a study group is worth more to this chart than another set of notes.

The ladder:

Mercury, the major-period lord across this whole cycle, is the 4th lord sitting in the 6th. Jupiter, the sub-period lord until March 2028, is in its own sign on the ascendant. From 1 June 2026 the pratyantar sequence inside that antardasha runs Saturn to 11 Aug 2026, Mercury to 7 Dec 2026, Ketu to 24 Jan 2027, Venus to 11 Jun 2027, Sun to 22 Jul 2027, Moon to 29 Sep 2027, Mars to 16 Nov 2027, then Rahu to 20 Mar 2028.

The windows:

This candidate is in Sade Sati now, with Saturn sitting on their Pisces Moon, and they stay in it across the whole window as Saturn moves into Aries. That is why the chart shows Regroup so often for them, and the wording of that window carries the point: it is a season, not a verdict on ability. The instruction attached to it is to keep the routine small and unbreakable, protect sleep, and put a big attempt after it passes where the choice exists.

What the two charts show side by side

Same sky, same paper, opposite advice. Chart B's strongest window for absorbing new material covers the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027, and it closes on 26 June 2027. Chart A's equivalent supportive window does not open until 26 November 2027, five months after B's has shut, and A's difficult window opens on 3 June 2027, three weeks before B's does. A candidate who front-loads hard topics on Chart B's calendar while holding Chart A's chart is working against their own dated map.

Neither read says anything about whether either candidate clears the exam, and the engine will not produce that claim. This is a deliberate product decision rather than a hedge. Every window is phrased as what the period supports, and a page that tells a 25-year-old they will fail has done them harm for no gain.

Reading your own attempt: the part that needs your birth details

Everything above is either the same for everybody or keyed to your rising sign alone. Your own read needs the three inputs that fix the ladder, and here is exactly what it produces.

• Your dasha ladder to pratyantar resolution across your own dates. Which major period, sub-period and sub-sub-period cover your paper date, and which cover each counselling round, with every boundary dated to the day. This is the layer the tables above cannot reach, since 77.22% of same-date births differ on the major period alone.
• Your six learning houses with their lords, read individually. Which sign holds each, where its lord sits, what condition that lord is in, and who else occupies the house. Chart A's 6th and 9th sharing one retrograde Mercury, and Chart B's four-planet 6th with its own lord in it, are both computed features rather than interpretations laid on top.
• Your three learning significators with their real condition. Mercury, Jupiter and the Moon with dignity, motion and combustion, which means whether a planet sits close enough to the Sun to be burnt by it. For a sense of how much this varies: in the 8,768-chart candidate sample, Mercury is combust, meaning burnt by sitting too close to the Sun, in 42.86% of charts, and retrograde at birth in 16.63%. Jupiter is retrograde at birth in 27.25%. Mercury is exalted in 8.47% and debilitated in 7.47%; Jupiter is exalted in 11.86% and debilitated in 11.53%.
• The dated windows for your chart, in the form both worked examples show, across the months you actually care about rather than a fixed twelve.
• Whether Sade Sati touches your attempt, and exactly when it starts and pauses. A third of this cohort is affected somewhere in the cycle, and Chart A's four-month pause between 20 October 2027 and 23 February 2028 shows why the dates matter more than the label.
• The study-style read and the focus practices the engine derives from whichever significator leads your learning axis, which came out completely different for the two charts above.

The reason this sits behind a sign-in is narrow: it is computed per chart and it is wrong for anybody else. If this is not your first attempt

The candidate quoted at the top had sat the exam across four years. That is common enough in postgraduate medical entrance to deserve a direct answer rather than reassurance.

The structural point is the one measured above. 87.51% of this cohort crosses at least one sub-period boundary inside any given 25-month window, and 15.21% change major period entirely. So the chart that governed a 2024 attempt is usually not the chart governing a 2027 one, and a run of unsuccessful attempts is not evidence that one fixed configuration is blocking you. More often it is evidence that several different configurations passed, which is a different situation and a more hopeful one.

The second point is about what to do with a difficult window when the date is not yours to choose. If your read returns Regroup across your paper date, that does not mean skip the attempt. It means the fatigue is real and arrives earlier than usual, so the correct response is to make the routine smaller and unbreakable rather than larger, and to avoid stacking two entrance attempts inside the same window where you have the choice. Where you do not have the choice, sit the paper.

The third is worth saying plainly. A chart describes conditions, and conditions are not outcomes. Candidates clear this exam in windows the engine would call heavy, and miss it in windows the engine would call supportive. The value of the read sits in what you do with the twelve months in front of the paper, not in a verdict on the paper itself.
