Ask Your Chart: Family

These are family questions people have actually sent us, in their own words:

Not one of them can be answered by knowing what the 4th house means. Every one of them needs the asker's own 4th house: which sign is sitting on it, which planet rules that sign, where that planet went, and whether its period is running now or in eleven years. Change the birth minute and the same question gets a different answer with different dates on it.

So this page is built in two parts. The first part is the method and the reference tables, computed and complete, and you can use it with nothing but your rising sign. The second part is the part only your own chart can supply, and the page says where the line falls instead of stopping at a wall.

Every position quoted here is sidereal, computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa against the Swiss ephemeris. Sidereal means measured against the fixed stars, which is the Vedic convention and the one this whole site uses. It is why your Sun sign here may differ from the sign you know from a newspaper column. Where a date appears, it is a computed ingress or a computed period boundary.

Which house holds which relative

A house is one of twelve segments of your chart, counted from your lagna. Your lagna, also called the ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. It changes about every two hours, which is why two people born the same morning in the same city have different houses and a genuinely different family reading.

Five houses carry family in AstroMedha's reading, and this is the engine's own table of what each one holds:

The 2nd is the one people are surprised by, so it is worth answering here rather than later. The Sanskrit term for it is kutumba, meaning the household as a body: the people who eat from the same kitchen and share the same money and the same reputation. That is why wealth and speech and family sit in one house. In practice the 2nd is what you read for the family as a group, for "will they support me" or "is this money going to stay in the family", and the 4th is what you read for one specific person, your mother, and for the building you sleep in.

Alongside the houses sit the karakas. A karaka is a planet that stands for a thing in every chart ever cast, whoever the person is and wherever the planet happens to sit. The four that matter for family:

Houses and karakas are two readings of the same relationship, and they can disagree. A chart can have a well-placed 4th house and a badly-placed Moon. That combination has a specific meaning rather than being a contradiction to average away: the home itself is stable and the relationship with the mother is where the difficulty lives. Read both, and when they differ, the house describes the arrangement and the karaka describes the person.

Your three family lords, from your rising sign alone

Every sign is ruled by one planet. Once you know your lagna, the ruling planets of your 2nd, 4th and 9th houses are fixed, and you can read all three off this table with no calculation. Those three planets are the ones whose periods carry family results, because a planet delivers the affairs of the houses it rules when its own period runs.

If you do not know your birth time, read the table from your Moon sign instead of your lagna. Your Moon sign is fixed by the date and roughly the hour, so it survives a missing birth time, while the lagna does not. The houses then count from the Moon rather than from the horizon, which is a coarser frame and still a real one. Your Moon sign is on the free rashi tool and your lagna is on the free kundli tool.

Four rows have a planet appearing twice, and the repetition carries information. A Leo lagna has Mars ruling both the 4th and the 9th, so one planet's condition and one planet's periods carry the mother and the father together. A Pisces lagna has Mars ruling the 2nd and the 9th. A Virgo lagna has Venus ruling the 2nd and the 9th, and an Aquarius lagna has Venus ruling the 4th and the 9th. For those four charts the family axis is concentrated: fewer planets carry it, so each one matters more, and that planet is the first thing to check.

Three rows do the opposite and put a karaka in charge of its own house. An Aries lagna has the Moon, karaka of the mother, ruling the 4th house of the mother, and Jupiter, karaka of elders, ruling the 9th house of elders. It is the only lagna where both hold at once. A Cancer lagna has Jupiter ruling the 9th on its own, and a Sagittarius lagna has the Sun, karaka of the father, ruling the 9th house of the father. Where a karaka rules its own house the two readings above can no longer disagree, and the chart speaks about that relative with one voice instead of two.

How much of a life actually runs on the family axis

This is the part of the page you will not find anywhere else, because it comes from running the engine over a large population rather than from a text.

Vedic astrology dates a life with the Vimshottari dasha, a 120-year cycle divided among the nine planets in a fixed order, each getting a fixed number of years. Dasha simply means period. The nine shares are Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17.

Because your three family lords are fixed by your lagna, the share of that 120-year cycle they control is also fixed by your lagna, and it is identical for everyone born under it. Here is that share, computed exactly:

An Aries or Gemini lagna spends nearly twice as much of the cycle under a family lord as a Leo or Pisces lagna does. That is a structural fact about the rising sign and owes nothing to the individual chart.

The lived number is higher, because on any given day you are running two periods at once: a mahadasha, the outer chapter lasting six to twenty years, and inside it an antardasha, a sub-period that shares out the same span in the same fixed order. Either can belong to a family lord. Over 100,000 computed charts, measuring the adult span from age 20 to 70:

Half of an adult life, at the median, runs under a planet that owns part of the family axis. The ascendant moves that number a long way:

The practical use of the last row is the one people miss. A Pisces lagna spending 35% of adult life on the family axis does not mean a smaller family or a colder one. It means family matters arrive in fewer, longer, more concentrated stretches, with quiet years between them. The median quiet stretch across all charts is six and a half years, which is long enough that a person inside one can reasonably conclude nothing about their family is ever going to change. What the ladder says is that the next stretch has a date, and that date is computable rather than a matter of hope.

Base rates, so you can tell a hard placement from a rare one

The commonest mistake a reader makes with their own chart is finding one difficult placement and treating it as a verdict. These are the base rates over 200,000 computed charts, and they exist to stop that.

Houses 6, 8 and 12 are called dusthanas, meaning the houses of difficulty: debt and conflict, upheaval and interruption, and loss and expense. A lord placed in one of them takes its affairs into harder ground.

More than half of all charts have at least one family lord in difficult ground. The reason those numbers sit so close to a quarter each is that the placement is very nearly random: across the 200,000 charts the 4th lord lands in each of the twelve houses between 7.7% and 8.9% of the time, so no house is meaningfully favoured. Finding your 4th lord in the 8th is a one-in-four event, which makes it the ordinary case rather than a mark against you. What it changes is the shape of the reading, not its verdict.

The same holds for the three karakas. Counting a karaka as clean when it is not debilitated, not in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and not combust:

Only about one chart in four has all three family karakas clean. Nearly three in four carry something flagged on the family axis at birth. That is the population you are being compared against when a reading says your Moon is under pressure.

Debilitated means placed in the sign opposite a planet's exaltation, where the faculty it carries comes good later than the person's effort predicts. Combust means close enough to the Sun to be burnt by it, so that faculty is easily overshadowed by pressure or a loud room and shows best in quiet conditions. The orbs the engine uses are Moon 12 degrees, Jupiter 11, Mercury 14, Venus 10, Mars 17 and Saturn 15.

Plain words. Exaltation means the sign where the tradition rates a planet strongest. Own sign means the sign that planet rules. Dignity means the strength a planet takes from the sign it sits in. Sade sati means the seven and a half years Saturn spends crossing your Moon.

Reading your mother: the Moon and the 4th

Four things about the Moon are checkable rather than atmospheric, and each has a base rate so you know how unusual your own case is.

Its sign. The Moon is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, and it owns Cancer. Across 200,000 charts it comes out exalted 8.3% of the time, debilitated 8.4%, in its own sign 8.5%, and in a sign that is none of those 74.8%. An exalted Moon reads as a mother whose steadiness was available to you and a mind that settles quickly, which is the easier end. A debilitated Moon reads as a relationship that took longer to become easy than it should have, and a mind that needs more deliberate settling. The three quarters in the middle mean the sign is usually not the deciding factor, which is why the next three matter.

Its house. The Moon lands in the 6th, 8th or 12th in 24.8% of charts. In the 6th the relationship carries friction and service, often the practical burden of looking after someone. In the 8th it carries interruption and things not said out loud. In the 12th it carries distance, whether that is geography, illness, or a mother who was present and somehow not reachable. All three are common, all three are readable, and none of them is a sentence.

Its distance from the Sun. The Moon is combust in 6.5% of charts, meaning within 12 degrees of the Sun. This one is genuinely uncommon, and it reads as a mother whose own presence was overshadowed by the father or by the authority in the house, rather than as an absent mother.

Its company. The Moon shares a house with Saturn in 8.4% of charts, with Rahu or Ketu in 16.6%, and with Mars in 8.4%. Saturn beside the Moon reads as duty arriving early and affection arriving slowly, which is a description of the pace rather than of the amount. Rahu or Ketu beside the Moon reads as a relationship that was never quite ordinary, either intense or oddly absent. Mars beside the Moon reads as heat, meaning arguments that flare and clear rather than resentments that sit.

The house and the karaka then have to be read together. If your 4th house is clean and your Moon is in the 12th, the home was fine and your mother was the distant part. If your Moon is well placed and your 4th lord is in the 8th, your mother is not the problem and the house you grew up in was unstable. Readers who merge the two end up describing a family that was never theirs.

Reading your father: the Sun and the 9th

The Sun is read the same way with one difference: nothing combusts the Sun, so there are three checks rather than four.

Its sign. The Sun is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra, and it owns Leo. Over 200,000 charts: exalted 8.5%, debilitated 8.1%, own sign 8.6%, none of those 74.8%. A debilitated Sun reads as a father whose authority was uncertain or contested, in the house or in the world, and as your own late arrival at feeling entitled to take a position. That is a statement about timing, and timing is usually recoverable.

Its house. The Sun sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th in 25.1% of charts. The 12th in particular reads as a father who was elsewhere: working away, unwell, withdrawn, or gone. This is the placement behind several of the queries that reach this site every month, and the next section says exactly what we will and will not do with it.

Its company. The Sun shares a house with Saturn in 9.2% of charts and with Rahu or Ketu in 16.8%. Saturn with the Sun is the classic hard-father signature, reading as approval that was rationed and standards that never dropped. It is also, in adulthood, the signature of someone who works without needing to be watched, which is the same placement paying out rather than a consolation offered in place of one.

The 9th house is wider than the father. It also holds teachers, mentors, patrons and whoever backs you from a position above you. A 9th house under strain therefore describes a pattern rather than one man: the older figures who were supposed to open doors did not, repeatedly, and the person learned to move without them. Reading it as being only about the father is the commonest misreading of this house, and it costs the reader the useful half.

What this page will not tell you about a parent

Two of the queries that bring people here are "sun in 8th house death father" and "moon in 12th house death of mother". They are not rare and they are not idle. Someone types that at two in the morning because a parent is ill.

AstroMedha does not time a death. Not for you, not for a parent, not for a child, not with a year, a month, or a phrase like "the highest signal falls in". This is a standing rule inside the product, it applies to every reading and every chat turn, and it is a judgement about harm rather than a gap in the calculation. A birth chart cannot establish a lifespan, and the damage of putting a clock on a parent's life does not come back if the reading turns out wrong. So the honest sentence is that longevity is not something to read this way, and a placement in your chart is not evidence about your parent's health.

What the same placement does say is worth having. The Sun in the 8th or the 12th, or a hard period running on your 9th lord, describes a stretch where the relationship with your father, or his circumstances, takes more of your attention and more of your money than usual. That is a period to schedule his check-ups into, to sort the paperwork in, and to have the conversation you have been postponing. Every such stretch has a computed end date, and having the end date is what separates a hard season from a hopeless one.

The same rule covers the other question people bring, which is who wins. Several of the messages above are about ancestral property being divided between brothers. A chart does not call the outcome of a dispute, because the outcome turns on documents, on a court, and on other people's choices, none of which are in your chart. Telling someone they will win talks them out of settling and out of getting proper advice, and that is a real cost paid by the person who trusted the reading. What a chart reads is the season: whether the coming stretch favours pressing the matter or parking it, and when the pressure eases. The 4th house is the house of immovable property, and its lord's period is when property matters move at all, which is a usable answer to "should I push this now" without being an answer to "will I win".

Siblings, the 3rd house and Mars

The 3rd house carries courage, siblings, effort and your own voice, and Mars is the karaka of siblings in every chart. Those two are what a sibling question is read from.

The pairing is more informative than it looks, because the 3rd house does not hold siblings on their own. It holds your nerve. A 3rd house under strain reads as a person who finds it hard to assert themselves with the people they grew up beside, which is a different problem from having difficult siblings, and it has a different solution: the work is on how you raise things, not on how they behave. One of the messages sent to us says it exactly, "How will my business partnership be with my brother vinamra? will i do better financially independently or with him?" That is a 3rd house question wearing a business question's clothes, and the useful half of the answer is about how the two of them decide things rather than about the trade.

AstroMedha's house table assigns no separate house to in-laws, and this page will not invent one. An in-law question is read here from the house you now live in, the 4th, and from the 7th house of marriage and partnership, because those are the two the method actually covers. Elders, and the family as a group: Jupiter and the 2nd

Jupiter stands for teachers, elders, wisdom, children and expansion, and it is the planet to check when the question is about the older generation as a whole rather than about one parent.

Two of those rows need their meaning stated rather than left as labels.

Retrograde means the planet appeared to move backward through the zodiac at your birth minute. Nearly three charts in ten have Jupiter that way, so it is ordinary. For Jupiter it turns the teacher inward: understanding tends to arrive from your own re-reading rather than from being told, and family wisdom handed down tends to be tested before it is accepted. In a family reading that shows up as someone who could not simply take the elders' word for how life works and had to arrive at it themselves.

Aspecting means Jupiter casts its influence onto a house it does not occupy. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from wherever it sits, counting its own house as the first in the count. In 58.3% of charts at least one of the three family houses receives that aspect, which is protective: it reads as a family axis with something steady underneath it, whatever else is going on. If you are in the 41.7% without it, the reading is that support has to be built rather than inherited, which describes the work rather than a shortage of luck.

The 4th house itself is worth a paragraph. It is empty in 49.7% of charts, meaning no planet occupies it at all. An empty house is not a dead house: it is read entirely through its lord, which is to say through wherever that lord went. In the other half of charts something is sitting there, and 35.1% have at least one of the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the 4th against 15.8% with Jupiter or Venus. Saturn specifically occupies the 4th in 8.2% of charts and aspects it in 25.1%. Saturn in the 4th reads as a home that carried responsibility early, and as a person for whom rest is something learned rather than natural.

When family pressure has a date on it

Saturn and Jupiter are the two slow planets, and they are what turn a chart into a calendar. Jupiter takes about a year to cross a sign and Saturn about two and a half, so between them they define a family season rather than a family week. Both spend part of each year retrograde, which can carry a planet back into the sign it just left, which is why the runs below reopen.

Jupiter

The sky is the same for everyone. What differs is which of your houses those signs fall in, and that is decided by your lagna. The tables below give the dated stretches by lagna. A lagna missing from a table does not get that contact inside these dates, which is neither help nor obstruction.

Saturn in your 4th house. The home and the mother under weight. Household responsibility increases and rest gets harder to come by, and the instruction that comes with it is to protect sleep and to lower what you expect the house to give back during the stretch.

Saturn aspecting your 4th house. The same weight at a distance. It is a lighter version of the row above and it reaches three times as many charts.

Saturn in your 9th house. Elders and the father under weight: a parent's care, a mentor's withdrawal, or an institution that stops being generous. The useful move inside it is to stop waiting for the older figure to act and to carry the thing yourself, which is what the stretch teaches whether or not you volunteer for the lesson.

Saturn in your 2nd house. The household's money and the household's speech under weight. Shared expenses rise and conversations at home get more careful.

Jupiter in your 4th house. The good stretch for the home. It favours moving house, fixing the house you have, bringing a parent to live with you, or repairing a relationship with your mother that has been stuck.

Jupiter in your 9th house. The good stretch for elders and mentors. A father-shaped relationship becomes easier to have, and the older person who backs you is more likely to appear or reappear.

Jupiter in your 2nd house. The good stretch for the family as a group. It favours the family conversation you have been avoiding, and it is the season in which shared money is most likely to be settled without a fight.

Use these the way a farmer uses a season. A Jupiter stretch on your 4th is when to attempt the difficult family conversation, and a Saturn stretch on the same house is when to hold the position you already have rather than open a new front. Neither one decides the outcome. They decide how much resistance the same effort meets.

The part a table cannot give you

Everything above can be looked up from your rising sign. The dasha ladder cannot, and it is the part that puts a date on your family rather than on your lagna.

Where your life starts in the 120-year cycle is fixed by your Moon's nakshatra. A nakshatra is one of the twenty-seven equal segments the zodiac is divided into, each owned by one of the same nine planets. Your first period belongs to the owner of the segment your Moon was in, and it starts partly spent: a Moon a quarter of the way through its nakshatra begins life with three quarters of that planet's years still to run. Two people born on the same day at different hours therefore run different periods for their whole lives.

The cycle nests three deep. The mahadasha is the outer chapter, six to twenty years. Inside it run nine antardashas, sharing out that span in the same fixed order and proportion, from about four months to about three and a third years each. Inside each antardasha run nine pratyantars, of the same shape again, from about five days to about seven months. On any given day you are running three lords at once.

The third level is where a family question lands, and the reason is arithmetic. A mahadasha lasting a decade cannot tell you whether to raise the property matter this quarter or next year. A pratyantar averaging about seven weeks can. It is also why an answer that names a year is usually not an answer: inside one year there are several pratyantars and they are not alike.

What you read, once you have the three lords for your date, is which of your houses each of them rules and how each one sits in your chart. A pratyantar belonging to your 4th lord, well placed, is a different month from one belonging to a planet that owns nothing on your family axis. A worked example, computed end to end

Sample inputs, so every number below can be checked: born 17 February 1993 at 13:30, Lucknow (26.8467 N, 80.9462 E, UTC+5:30). Read as of 26 August 2026.

The structure. Gemini lagna, rising at 7.09 degrees. From a Gemini lagna the 2nd house is Cancer and its lord is the Moon, the 4th is Virgo and its lord is Mercury, and the 9th is Aquarius and its lord is Saturn. The Moon sits in Sagittarius in the 7th house, in Purva Ashadha nakshatra pada 2, in a neutral sign, and it is not combust at 46.5 degrees from the Sun against an orb of 12. Mercury sits in Aquarius in the 9th house, neutral, and not combust at 17.3 degrees against an orb of 14. Saturn sits in Capricorn, its own sign, in the 8th house, and it is combust at 6.8 degrees against an orb of 15. The Sun is in Aquarius in the 9th house. Jupiter is in Virgo in the 4th house, neutral, and retrograde. Mars is in Gemini in the 1st house. Rahu is in the 6th and Ketu in the 12th.

What that structure says. The father-side reading here is unusually consistent and the mother-side reading is not, which is the case where houses and karakas have to be read separately. The Sun, karaka of the father, sits in the 9th house of the father, which is a strong signature: the father is a defined presence in this life rather than a vague one. Against that, the 9th lord Saturn has gone to the 8th house, one of the three houses of difficulty, and it is burnt by the Sun. So the relationship is not absent, it is costly, and the cost has a shape: something in it is interrupted or unspoken, and the father's own standing is easily overshadowed. Both facts are true at once, and a reading that reported only one of them would be describing half a person.

The mother side reads differently again. The 4th house is occupied by Jupiter, karaka of elders, which is protective for the home, and its lord Mercury has gone to the 9th, tying the home to the father's house rather than letting it stand on its own. The Moon, karaka of the mother, is in the 7th house of marriage and partnership. Neither placement is difficult. What they describe is a home whose centre of gravity sits with the father and the elders, and a mother whose influence reaches this person through whoever they partner with rather than through the house itself.

The ladder on the day. On 26 August 2026 this chart is running a Mars mahadasha (22 June 2021 to 22 June 2028), a Venus antardasha (17 May 2026 to 17 July 2027), and a Moon pratyantar (17 August 2026 to 22 September 2026). Mars rules the 6th and 11th here and Venus rules the 5th and 12th, so neither of the outer two lords owns any part of the family axis. The Moon does: it is the 2nd lord, the household. So the family window running right now is five weeks wide and it closes on 22 September 2026.

Here is the full pratyantar ladder inside the current antardasha, which is where the resolution lives:

Three of the nine belong to family lords, and they are dated to the day. A conversation with the father that this person has been postponing has a computed 67-day stretch beginning 14 February 2027. A decision about the house has a 60-day stretch beginning 23 April 2027. Neither is a prediction about what gets said. Both answer "when should I raise it", which is the question that was actually asked.

The sky on the day. Saturn is in Pisces, the 10th house from this lagna, and from there it aspects this chart's 4th, 7th and 12th houses. So the home is under Saturn's weight from 26 August 2026 to 3 June 2027, and again from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028. Jupiter is in Cancer, which is this chart's 2nd house and also Jupiter's sign of exaltation, running 26 August 2026 to 31 October 2026 and again 25 January 2027 to 26 June 2027. Jupiter aspects the 6th, 8th and 10th from there, so none of the family houses receives its aspect, and its presence in the 2nd is still the strongest family transit this chart gets in the whole period. Read together: the household as a group is being supported while the house itself is under pressure, which is a specific and checkable claim rather than a mood.

The honest part. The next family window at antardasha level does not open until 22 November 2027, when a Moon antardasha, the 2nd lord, runs to 22 June 2028. After that this chart enters an 18-year Rahu mahadasha on 22 June 2028, and its first two antardashas belong to Rahu and to Jupiter, neither of which rules a family house here. The next antardasha on the family axis is Saturn, the 9th lord, from 29 July 2033. That is a quiet stretch of a little over five years between June 2028 and July 2033, which sits just inside the population median of six and a half years computed earlier on this page. Inside it, family matters still move at the pratyantar level, in stretches of weeks. What does not arrive in those five years is a chapter-length change, and knowing that in advance is the difference between planning around it and waiting for it.

The questions people bring, and what a chart does with them

These are the actual asks, grouped, with what the method above returns for each.

"Should I live separately from my parents?" This is a 4th house question and a running-period question together. The 4th house is the dwelling, so the state of your 4th lord says whether a separate house is a settling move or an expensive one, and the Jupiter stretch on your 4th above says when the move is best attempted. What the chart does not do is rule on the relationship. Moving out during a Saturn stretch on the 4th is harder, people still do it, and sometimes that is the right call.

"Will my family support this decision?" The 2nd house, the family as a body. If your 2nd lord's period is running, the family is engaged in your affairs for better or worse, and the decision is more likely to become a family matter than a private one. If it is not running, you are more likely to be making the decision alone, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a blessing.

"My parent is ageing and the responsibility is mine." The 4th for a mother, the 9th for a father, plus Saturn's dated contact with whichever one applies. Saturn stretches on those houses are when the practical burden concentrates, and they end on a computed date. The reason to know that date is not comfort. It is that a burden with an end date can be planned into a year, and one without an end date gets absorbed into a person's whole life.

"I do not speak to my father any more." The 9th house, its lord, and the Sun. A hard reading here explains a pattern that the person has usually been carrying as a private verdict on themselves. It is worth saying plainly that a difficult 9th does not mean you caused it, and the base rates above put that lord in difficult ground in roughly a quarter of all charts. Whether contact resumes is not in the chart. When the ground is softest for an attempt is, and that is the Jupiter stretch on the 9th in the table above.

"Will I get my share of the property?" The season, not the verdict, for the reasons given earlier. What is readable is when property matters move for you at all, which is your 4th lord's periods, and whether the coming stretch favours pressing or waiting.

"Why do I feel like the outsider in my own family?" This is the question the 45 pages listed below were written to answer, and they answered it in general terms because they had no birth data to answer it in particular. The chart version is specific: your 2nd lord's placement says how the household holds together, your Moon says how you were met inside it, and the running period says whether the current distance is old or seasonal. Old and seasonal are different problems with different answers, and telling them apart is the whole value.

Where the question has a fixed decision behind it, the Decision Report reads that one decision against your chart and dates it. Where it is about children rather than parents, the Children and Fertility Timing report covers the 5th house, Jupiter as the karaka, the D-7 divisional chart and every dasha window across the fertile span. Where it is about two people rather than one, the Relationship Compatibility report reads both charts.

How the numbers on this page were produced

Every base rate here comes from running AstroMedha's own engine over generated charts rather than from a text. The population figures use 200,000 charts and the dasha figures use 100,000, each cast from a uniformly random date between 1 January 1960 and 31 December 2009 and a uniformly random minute of the day, all at New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E, UTC+5:30), with a fixed seed so the run repeats. Houses are Whole Sign, positions are sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and dignity, combustion and the dasha ladder come from the same functions that produce a paying customer's reading.

Two limits are worth stating. The ascendant distribution in a sample like this depends on latitude: at Delhi's latitude Cancer and Libra rise about 9.8% of the time and Pisces about 5.9%, so a rate quoted per chart is not the same as a rate quoted per ascendant. And a generated population is not the Indian population, because real births are not spread evenly across the day or the year. The rates above are therefore the right yardstick for how unusual a placement is in principle, and the wrong one for how many people in India have it.
