Is a Child Promised in My Chart?

The word people bring to this question is "promised", and it comes from the tradition itself. Classical Vedic texts speak of santan yoga, the combination that carries children. A yoga here means a named set of placements that the tradition reads as one unit rather than as separate details.

The honest answer to the question as asked is that the chart carries a structure and a calendar, and that neither of those is a verdict on a body. What the 5th house and its ruling planet and Jupiter and the D7 Saptamsha actually return is a description of how this part of your life is built, which periods of your life it is most active in, and where the strain in it sits. Capacity is a medical question with a medical answer, and your doctor can measure things a chart has no access to.

That distinction is not a way of avoiding the question. It is the reason the reading is worth running. A chart read this way gives you dated windows and a named source of strain, and neither of those comes out of a yes or a no.

What follows is about timing, not about medicine. It cannot diagnose anything, it cannot tell you whether conception is possible, and it is never a reason to start, stop, delay or change any treatment. Those decisions belong with your doctor, who can see what a chart cannot.

The one thing to settle first: which house is your 5th

Houses in this method are counted whole sign from the lagna, the sign that was climbing the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. The whole of that rising sign is your 1st house, the whole of the next sign is your 2nd, and the count runs on around the circle. Your 5th house is therefore an entire sign, the fifth one along from your rising sign, with nothing of it spilling into a neighbour.

The 5th is the house the tradition assigns to children, and it is called the putra bhava, which translates as the house of the child. It also carries creativity, intelligence and what you bring into being, and those are read as the same function seen from different sides rather than as unrelated meanings sharing an address.

The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so this is the one part of the chart that needs your clock time as well as your date and your birthplace. If you have no reliable birth time, the standard fallback is to count the same houses from the sign your Moon occupies instead. The section on birth time near the end of this page says exactly what that fallback costs, with numbers.

Here is your 5th sign and its ruling planet, read straight off your rising sign. The 9th is in the table too, because the tradition treats it as the second house of children, on the reasoning that the 9th is the fifth sign counted from the 5th.

Only seven planets can ever rule a house. Rahu and Ketu, the two lunar nodes, rule no sign in this system, so they never appear in the lord columns. They can still sit in your 5th house or throw an aspect at it, which is layer three.

Across 100,000 charts computed for births between 1975 and 2005 at ten Indian cities, the 5th lord came out as follows. The seven are unevenly represented because signs take unequal amounts of time to climb the horizon at Indian latitudes, so rising signs themselves are unevenly distributed.

Note the first line. Jupiter is already the planet the tradition holds responsible for children in every chart, and in 18.40% of charts it also rules the 5th house directly. In those charts two of the six layers below collapse into one planet, which makes the reading simpler and also narrower, and the worked examples show what that looks like from both sides.

Layer one: the 5th lord, where it sits and what condition it is in

Every sign has a ruling planet, called its lord. The lord of your 5th sign is the planet responsible for delivering that house's affairs, wherever in the chart it happens to be standing. Two separate questions get asked of it, and running them together is the commonest mistake in this reading.

The first question is which house it occupies, because that says where in your life the 5th house's business actually gets transacted. A 5th lord in the 10th house puts the matter into working life; a 5th lord in the 12th puts it into what is spent, released or carried out of view. The tradition treats the 6th, 8th and 12th as the difficult three, the dusthanas, and reads a 5th lord in one of them as a sign that the route to the house's results runs through friction rather than that the results are withheld.

The second question is dignity, which is the condition a planet is in by virtue of the sign it occupies. Dignity is fixed by a table rather than by judgement. Exalted means the planet is in the single sign where it performs at full strength. Debilitated means the opposite sign, where it performs at its weakest. Own sign means it is in a sign it rules, so it is at home and answerable to nobody. Everything else is neutral.

Across the 100,000 charts, the 5th lord was neutral 69.63% of the time, in its own sign 13.74%, exalted 8.80% and debilitated 7.83%. Seven charts in ten therefore have nothing at all to say at the dignity line, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a verdict there. When dignity is neutral the reading comes from the house the lord occupies, from the sign it occupies, and from the planet that rules that sign, and none of those three is ever blank.

The planet ruling the sign your 5th lord sits in is called the dispositor, the planet that carries your 5th lord's business onward. It matters because a planet standing in another planet's sign hands its results along rather than delivering them itself, so the dispositor is where those results actually come out, from its own house and its own sign. Where the 5th lord is neutral and unremarkable, the dispositor is usually where the description has been hiding, and in the second worked chart below it moves the reading from one house to another.

Two further states get read off the same line, and both are computed rather than judged. A planet that is retrograde, meaning it is moving backwards against the fixed stars as seen from Earth, is held to deliver its results on a delay and out of order rather than not at all. A planet that is combust, meaning it sits closer to the Sun than a fixed per-planet threshold, is held to deliver them muffled, because the Sun's proximity overwhelms it. The thresholds this engine uses are 12 degrees for the Moon, 17 for Mars, 14 for Mercury, 11 for Jupiter, 10 for Venus and 15 for Saturn, and the Sun never burns itself.

Combustion of the 5th lord is common enough to be worth checking and rare enough to be worth naming when it happens: 15.23% of the 100,000 charts had it. It is also the condition a reader is likeliest to have missed, because unlike a sign or a house it does not appear anywhere on the wheel. It has to be measured against where the Sun is.

Where does the 5th lord actually go? Almost anywhere, in almost equal proportions. Across the 100,000 charts the twelve houses took between 7.68% and 9.11% each, and 24.85% of charts had the 5th lord in one of the difficult three. A quarter of everyone shares that placement, which is the first sign that no single line in this reading is a verdict.

Layer two: who stands in your 5th house, and who is looking at it

A planet actually inside your 5th house colours the house more directly than its lord does, because it is in the room rather than responsible for the room. Half of all charts have nobody there at all. Across the 100,000, 49.66% had an empty 5th house, 32.45% had exactly one planet in it, and 12.57% had two.

An empty 5th house is information rather than a hole in the reading. It means the description is carried by the lord, by Jupiter and by the D7 instead, and all three of those are present in every chart. It is also the reason so many readings of an empty 5th sound like they could be about anyone: the reader stopped at the one layer that happened to be blank.

Aspects are the other half of this layer, and they are why a house with nobody in it is rarely quiet. Every planet gazes at the house directly opposite itself, seven houses away counting inclusively from its own. Four of them throw extra aspects as well.

Counting inclusively means the planet's own house is the first in the count. A planet standing in your 1st house therefore throws its 5th aspect onto your 5th, because the 1st is the first house of the count and the 5th is the fifth. That single line resolves most of the confusion people have with aspect counting, and it is worth checking twice on your own wheel before drawing any conclusion from it.

Across the 100,000 charts, Rahu landed an aspect on the 5th house in 25.41% of charts, Jupiter in 25.21%, Mars in 25.20%, Saturn in 24.88% and Ketu in 24.62%, against roughly 8.4% each for the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus. The gap of about three to one is entirely the extra aspects those five throw, and it says nothing whatever about which planet matters more.

Layer three: Jupiter, and what "affliction" actually counts

Jupiter is the karaka of children, meaning the planet that signifies the thing itself in every chart, whatever house or sign it happens to occupy. That standing is why almost every treatment of this question starts with Jupiter and why Jupiter's arrival on the 5th house is the classical trigger for timing.

Two placements are read as supportive, and both are checkable on your own wheel in a few seconds. Jupiter standing inside the 5th house is the stronger of the two. Jupiter reaching the 5th house by aspect, from its 5th, 7th or 9th, is the weaker but far commoner one. Across the 100,000 charts Jupiter stood in the 5th in 8.12% and aspected it in 25.21%, so 33.33% of all charts, one in three, have Jupiter on the 5th house by one route or the other.

Jupiter's own condition is read on the same table as everyone else's. Across the 100,000 it was neutral 69.03% of the time, in its own sign 13.88%, exalted in Cancer 10.29% and debilitated in Capricorn 6.81%.

When the 5th lord and Jupiter are joined in one sign, or when each aspects the other, the tradition names the pair a putra yoga and reads the two planets as working together rather than separately. That combination appeared in 32.54% of charts, but the raw number is misleading and the reason is arithmetic: in the 18.40% of charts where Jupiter itself rules the 5th, the two planets are the same body and the condition is satisfied by definition. Among charts where Jupiter is not the 5th lord, the putra yoga appeared in 17.34%, and that is the number to use.

Now the word that does the most damage in this reading. Affliction, in the classical vocabulary, means a natural malefic occupying the house or throwing an aspect at it. The natural malefics are Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu and the Sun. The natural benefics are Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon. Those two sets are fixed, not chart-dependent.

Run that definition across 100,000 charts and here is what comes back.

Four charts in five carry an affliction on the 5th house under the standard definition. A test that flags 81.16% of the population cannot be a rule about who has children, and reading it as one is the single commonest error people arrive with. What the affliction actually tells you is which planet is applying the pressure and therefore which period of your life it becomes loud in, and that is a usable answer rather than a frightening one.

The distribution underneath that table is worth one more line, because it shows how ordinary the crowded case is. Two or more malefics touched the 5th in 47.96% of charts, and three or more in 17.29%. Half of everyone has at least two.

Layer four: the D7 Saptamsha, the chart built for this question

The tradition does not read children from the main wheel alone. It builds a second chart from the first, called the Saptamsha and written D7, and reads that one for progeny specifically. The main chart shows the house and its tenants; the D7 shows the condition of the same planets for this subject and nothing else.

The construction is one line of arithmetic. Divide each 30 degree sign into seven equal arcs of 4 degrees 17 minutes and 8.57 seconds. Find which arc a planet occupies. For an odd-numbered sign, meaning Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, count that many arcs starting from the sign itself. For an even-numbered sign, meaning Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces, start the count from the seventh sign along instead. The sign you land on is that planet's D7 position, and the ascendant is mapped the same way to give a D7 rising sign.

We checked that table against the engine at the midpoint of all 84 arcs and found zero mismatches, so the rule as stated above and the values the product computes are the same thing.

Three readings come out of the D7 for this question. The D7 rising sign and its lord set the frame. The 5th sign counted from that D7 rising sign, with its lord, is a second reading of the same subject taken inside the chart built for it, and that lord is a different planet from your main-chart 5th lord in 81.19% of charts, so it almost always adds a name rather than repeating one. And your 5th lord and Jupiter each hold a dignity in the D7 as well as in the main chart, which is where the D7 either confirms the first reading or overturns it.

That last one is measurable, and the size of it is the reason the D7 is not optional. Counting a planet as strong when it is exalted or in its own sign, across the 100,000 charts the 5th lord's strength held between the two charts in 66.21% of cases, fell from strong to ordinary in 16.77%, and rose from ordinary to strong in 17.02%. Reading the main chart alone therefore gets the strength of the 5th lord wrong in about one chart in three, and it gets it wrong in both directions in almost exactly equal measure, so there is no safe side to guess on. Jupiter behaves the same way: it changed strength between the two charts in 35.19% of charts.

A planet that lands in the same sign in the main chart and the D7 is read as unusually consistent, showing one face in the visible circumstances and the same face in the specialised chart. The 5th lord held its birth sign in the D7 in 13.46% of charts and Jupiter in 10.33%.

Layer five: the Putrakaraka, computed from degrees rather than houses

There is a second school inside the same tradition that ignores your houses entirely for this. Take the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn and rank them by how far each has travelled into whatever sign it occupies, measured in degrees. The planet at the highest degree is the Atmakaraka, which the tradition reads as the self. Running down the ladder, the fifth rung is the Putrakaraka, and the gloss attached to it is children, students, and what you create and pass on.

The Putrakaraka is an independent voice, and that is exactly what makes it worth computing. It arrives from degrees rather than from houses, so when it agrees with the 5th lord or with Jupiter the agreement carries real weight. Across the 100,000 charts the Putrakaraka was Jupiter in 17.51% of charts and was the 5th lord itself in 14.30%. Both are close to what chance would produce with seven candidates, which is the point.

Two conventions have to be stated rather than assumed, because they change the answer and because no competitor discloses which one they use.

The first is how many planets are in the pool. This reading uses the seven-planet ladder, following BPHS 32.1 and the practice of K. N. Rao and Iranganti Rangacharya. Schools that add Rahu build an eight-planet ladder, on which Rahu takes a rung of its own and pushes every planet below it down one. The consequence is measurable: across 10,000 charts from the same generator the two schemes named a different Putrakaraka in 36.39% of them. Both worked charts below are in that 36.39%, and the page names both answers in each case rather than quietly picking a side.

The second is that Ketu is never in the pool, and that is arithmetic rather than doctrine. Ketu sits exactly 180 degrees from Rahu, which is exactly six signs, so its degree within its own sign is identical to Rahu's in every chart that has ever been cast.

Layer six: the timing, which is where the reading stops being static

The five layers above describe a structure. They say nothing about when. Timing comes from Vimshottari, a system of planetary periods called dashas which divides a life into chapters of fixed length, each chapter ruled by one planet in a fixed order. The long chapter is called a mahadasha, which runs between six and twenty years. The sub-chapter inside it is called an antardasha, which runs from a few months to a few years. Both are running at any moment, and it is the pair that is read.

The classical rule for this question is that children arrive during the chapter or sub-chapter of a planet that carries the 5th house in that chart. That means the 5th lord, or Jupiter, or a planet standing in the 5th, or the 9th lord as the secondary. What makes this a chart reading rather than a table lookup is that the list of qualifying planets is different in every chart, because it is built from that chart's own placements.

The trigger on top of the calendar is Jupiter's transit. Jupiter takes about a year to cross a sign, and the classical reading is that its arrival on the 5th house, or on the sign holding your 5th lord, is when a supported chapter actually fires. Both worked charts below carry real Jupiter ingress dates, computed forward from today, and both illustrate a complication most treatments skip: Jupiter turns retrograde for roughly four months of every year, so it enters a sign, backs out of it, and comes in again. That is one passage across the sign, not several separate arrivals, and reading it as several is how a single transit gets turned into a list of dates to act on.

A chart read all the way through

Here is a chart born on 11 September 1993 at 23:36 in Pune, computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa and the Swiss Ephemeris, with mean nodes and whole-sign houses. Every value below came out of that computation. One column needs a word first: a nakshatra is one of 27 equal segments of 13 degrees 20 minutes, a second way of dividing the same zodiac, each segment carrying its own ruling planet, and the pada is the quarter of a nakshatra a planet falls in.

The 5th house and its lord. Taurus rises, so the 5th sign is Virgo and the 5th lord is Mercury. Mercury is in Virgo, which is both its own sign and its exaltation sign, and it stands in the 5th house itself. A 5th lord exalted inside its own 5th house is about as concentrated as this layer gets, and it means the house's affairs are not being handed anywhere else in the chart to be dealt with.

Exaltation means the sign where the tradition rates a planet strongest.

And then the qualification, in the same breath. Mercury sits 11.5 degrees from the Sun, and Mercury's combustion threshold is 14 degrees, so this exalted 5th lord is also combust. The two readings do not cancel. Exaltation says the planet is capable; combustion says its output arrives dimmed by whatever the Sun in this chart is busy with, and the Sun here is in its own sign in the 4th house, the house of home and settled ground. Read together, the pattern is a 5th house whose strength keeps getting routed through the household and its demands rather than expressed on its own account.

Jupiter. Jupiter is also in Virgo in the 5th house, at 23.49 degrees, in neutral condition. So the karaka of children stands inside the house of children, which is the 8.12% case, and because it shares a sign with the 5th lord the putra yoga is present by conjunction. The planet responsible for this house and the planet that signifies children in every chart are standing in the same sign.

Who else is in that room, and who is watching it. Mars is in the 5th too, at 26.00 degrees of Virgo, and Ketu in the 1st house throws its 5th aspect onto the 5th. That is two natural malefics on the house, which puts this chart in the 30.67% that has exactly two, and is a description of the traffic rather than a warning. Against them, Jupiter and Mercury are both benefics standing in the house. This chart is in the 49.58% that carries malefic and benefic contact at once, and the honest reading of that is a busy house rather than a compromised one.

The D7. The D7 rising sign is Aries, ruled by Mars. The 5th sign counted from that D7 ascendant is Leo, so the D7 fifth lord is the Sun, and Jupiter lands in Leo in the D7, which puts the karaka of children inside the fifth house of the chart built for children. Rahu is there with it. Mercury, meanwhile, lands in Aries in the D7, which is the D7 ascendant itself, and its dignity there is neutral. So the main chart's strongest claim, the exalted 5th lord, does not survive into the D7 as strength; it survives as prominence. This is the 16.77% case from the study above, and it is exactly the sort of thing the main chart on its own would have overstated.

The Putrakaraka. Ranked by degree within sign, the seven come out Mars at 25 degrees 59 minutes, the Moon at 25 degrees 22, the Sun at 25 degrees 14, Venus at 24 degrees 17, Jupiter at 23 degrees 29, Mercury at 6 degrees 42 and Saturn at 1 degree 32. The fifth rung is Jupiter, so Jupiter is the Putrakaraka. That is the third independent route by which Jupiter arrives in this reading, after the natural karaka role it holds in every chart and its placement inside the 5th house. Under the eight-planet school the Putrakaraka here would be Rahu instead and Jupiter would take the father's rung, which is the scheme sensitivity named above, stated because it is real.

One further detail belongs here rather than in a footnote. Mercury, the exalted 5th lord, is the Gnatikaraka on the same ladder, the rung glossed as rivals, obstacles and illness. The same planet is the strongest thing in the house and the ladder's marker for what fights you. Two methods disagreeing about one planet is the most useful output this reading produces, because it names where the effort goes rather than delivering a grade.

The calendar. This chart is in a Mercury chapter with a Venus sub-chapter running from 20 August 2025 to 20 June 2028. Mercury qualifies twice over as a timer here, ruling the 5th and standing in it, but Venus carries no connection to the 5th house in this chart, so the pair ranks low against this chart's own spread. What the reading says about a stretch like that is what it is good for: groundwork, tests, rest, and having everything in place so the next supported window is not spent preparing.

The supported windows that follow are dated. Mercury with Mars, from 26 September 2030 to 23 September 2031, at ages 37 to 38, with Mars standing in the 5th and Mercury ruling and occupying it. Mercury with Jupiter, from 11 April 2034 to 17 July 2036, at ages 40 to 42, which is this chart's strongest window because both halves carry the house and one of them is the karaka standing inside it. Then Mercury with Saturn, from 17 July 2036 to 27 March 2039, where Saturn rules the 9th.

The transit trigger. Jupiter reaches Virgo, this chart's 5th house, on 26 November 2027. Because it turns retrograde it backs out and comes in again twice, so it is standing on that house from 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028, again from 24 July 2028 to 26 December 2028, and again from 29 March 2029 to 25 August 2029. That is one passage of the karaka over the house, running from late 2027 into the second half of 2029, and it closes about a year before the first supported chapter opens in September 2030. Naming that gap is more useful than pretending the two coincide.

The same method, a chart where the layers disagree

A second chart, born 26 September 1994 at 13:05 in Kolkata, shows what the reading does when the classical markers point in opposite directions. This is the case people are usually most frightened of, and it is the case where the method earns its keep.

Sagittarius rises, so the 5th sign is Aries and the 5th lord is Mars. Mars sits in Cancer at 1.41 degrees, which is its sign of debilitation, in the 8th house, which is one of the difficult three. A debilitated 5th lord in a dusthana is the placement that a naive reading treats as a closed door. Ketu occupies the 5th house at 23.10 degrees of Aries. Saturn throws its 3rd aspect onto the 5th from Aquarius, and Rahu its 7th from Libra. Three natural malefics on the house, no putra yoga anywhere, and the 5th lord in the worst condition the dignity table has.

Debilitation means the sign where the tradition rates a planet weakest.

Now the rest of the same chart. Jupiter, in Libra in the 11th house, throws its 7th aspect straight onto the 5th, so the karaka does reach the house. Mercury and Venus aspect it from the same sign, and Venus is in its own sign there, so three natural benefics are on the house alongside the three malefics. And the D7 turns the central line over completely: Mars lands in Capricorn in the D7, which is Mars's exaltation sign. The planet that is at its weakest in the main chart is at its strongest in the chart built for this question. That is the 17.02% case, and a reading that stopped at the main chart would have got this chart's most important fact backwards.

The dispositor adds the last piece. Mars sits in Cancer, whose lord is the Moon, so the Moon carries the 5th lord's results onward. The Moon is in Taurus, its exaltation sign, in the 6th house. So a debilitated 5th lord hands its business to an exalted planet, and it hands it into the house of work, service, effort and illness. Resolved rather than left hanging, that reads as a matter that is not delivered on its own momentum and does respond to sustained work, and the 6th house is also the house medical treatment is read from.

The D7 rising sign is Taurus, ruled by Venus, and the D7 fifth sign is Virgo, whose lord is Mercury. Ketu is in that D7 fifth house as well as in the main chart's 5th, which is the one marker that repeats across both charts.

On the karaka ladder the Atmakaraka is the Moon, exalted in Taurus, and the Putrakaraka is the Sun at 9 degrees 12 minutes of Virgo, standing in the 10th house and ruling the 9th, the secondary house of children. Under the eight-planet school the Putrakaraka here would be Rahu. Mars, the 5th lord, is the Darakaraka on this ladder, the rung for the spouse, which puts the same planet on the partnership axis and the children axis at once.

The calendar. This chart is in a Jupiter chapter, and Jupiter is one of its qualifying timers because it aspects the 5th. From 28 July 2026 to 2 November 2028 the sub-chapter is Mercury, which carries no 5th-house connection here, so the pair reads as moving in steps rather than all at once, and the reading calls that stretch good for steady effort and for second opinions. Then Jupiter with Ketu, 2 November 2028 to 9 October 2029, with Ketu standing in the 5th. Then Jupiter with the Sun, 9 June 2032 to 28 March 2033, the Sun ruling the 9th. Then Jupiter with Mars, 28 July 2034 to 4 July 2035, Mars ruling the 5th.

The transit trigger, stated accurately. Jupiter is in Cancer as this is written, which is the sign holding this chart's 5th lord, and it is exalted there. It moves into Leo in November 2026, from where it casts its 9th aspect onto the 5th house, then retrogrades back into Cancer on 25 January 2027 and finally leaves Cancer on 26 June 2027. So the karaka is on or over this chart's 5th lord from now until the middle of 2027, with a three-month step onto the aspecting position in between. Later passages reach the 5th house by aspect from Libra on 26 December 2028 and from Sagittarius on 17 February 2031.

What the two charts together demonstrate. The first chart looks strong at the first layer and softens at the D7. The second looks closed at the first layer and opens at the D7. Neither of those is visible from the layer people usually stop at, and in both charts the useful output is a named place to put effort and a set of dated windows, not a grade.

What your birth time does to all of this

The layers do not degrade equally when the clock time is uncertain, and knowing which ones survive is more useful than a general warning about accuracy.

We recomputed the first worked chart at every minute for forty minutes either side of 23:36. Taurus was still rising at the start of that scan and stayed rising until 00:11, so across seventy-six of the eighty minutes scanned the 5th sign, the 5th lord, its dignity, its combustion, its house, the occupants of the 5th and the aspects onto it were all unchanged. At 00:12 the lagna becomes Gemini and the whole house frame moves with it.

The D7 rising sign was a different matter entirely. Aries held only from 23:36 to 23:52, a window seventeen minutes wide. Across the eighty-minute scan it stepped through Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus and Gemini, six different signs. The reason is arithmetic: the rising point moves about one degree every four minutes and a D7 arc is 4 degrees 17 minutes, so the D7 ascendant steps to the next sign roughly every seventeen minutes of clock time.

If you have no birth time at all, the picture changes again, and we measured this rather than assuming it. Across 3,000 charts we compared the true chart against the same date cast at noon, which is what a chart with no time falls back to.

And the fallback of counting houses from the Moon's sign instead does not recover the same house. The 5th counted from the Moon coincided with the 5th counted from the lagna in only 8.43% of charts, which is roughly the share where the Moon happens to sit in the rising sign. The Moon-based 5th is a real reading in its own right and it is a different house, so the two answers should never be treated as versions of each other.

The practical rule follows from those numbers. With a hospital record or a birth certificate, read all six layers. With a family recollection to the nearest half hour, read the 5th lord with its house, dignity and dispositor, read the occupants and aspects, read Jupiter, and hold the D7 rising sign loosely until the time is confirmed. Your 5th lord's own D7 sign and Jupiter's own D7 sign are safe either way, because they depend on those planets' degrees rather than on the horizon. With no time at all, Jupiter's condition is still solid ground, and the Putrakaraka comes out wrong roughly three times in ten, so hold it as provisional rather than dropping it.

So how much does the chart actually settle

That is the question underneath the original one, and it can be answered with counting rather than assertion. Here is every layer on this page, run across the same 100,000 charts, with the share of charts in which each classical marker is present.

Read down that column and the shape of the thing becomes obvious. Every marker is common enough that millions of people share it and rare enough that none of them is a majority verdict. Now combine them. Counting a chart as carrying support if it has any of the supportive markers, and as carrying affliction if it has a malefic on the 5th, a 5th lord in the difficult three, a debilitated 5th lord, a debilitated Jupiter or a combust 5th lord:

Seven charts in ten hold a classical supportive marker and a classical affliction at the same time. Only 7.67% carry support with no affliction anywhere, and only 2.14% carry neither kind of marker. Anyone who tells you your chart is simply favourable or simply blocked on this subject is reporting one line of a document that in almost every case contradicts itself somewhere, and the contradiction is the reading.

The other direction is where the value actually is. Here is how far each added layer narrows a chart down against the other 99,935.

At the last layer, 24,791 of the 99,936 charts were alone in their combination, and the median chart shared it with no one else at all. The commonest combination stays at 1.85% between the second and third rows for a reason worth naming: the largest group at both rows is charts where Jupiter itself rules the 5th, and for those charts adding Jupiter's house and dignity adds nothing, since it is the same planet twice.

That progression is the honest answer to the question in the title. There is no line in a chart that says promised or not promised. There is a structure that, read to four layers, is close to unique to you, and a calendar attached to it with dates on it.

What this reading does not do

Three boundaries, stated plainly because leaving them implicit would be worse.

It does not count children. The tradition contains rules that claim to, and this reading does not use them, because a number of children is an outcome about a life rather than a description of a chart, and nothing in the computation supports it.

It does not read a body. No placement on this page is evidence about fertility, a diagnosis, a treatment or a prognosis, and the disclaimer at the top of this page is the operative sentence on that, not a formality attached to it.

It does not read one chart for two people. Conception involves two people and this method reads one chart. Where a couple wants both charts read, the second chart is a second computation, and any reading that quietly extends one person's 5th house over their partner is guessing.

Every sign, degree, nakshatra, pada, house, dignity, combustion state, D7 position, karaka rung, dasha date and Jupiter ingress on this page was computed with the AstroMedha Vedic engine using the Lahiri ayanamsa and the Swiss Ephemeris, with mean nodes and whole-sign houses. The chara karaka ladder uses the seven-planet scheme (BPHS 32.1), ranked on unrounded sidereal longitude, with the eight-planet alternate reported wherever it differs. The natural benefic and malefic sets are Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon, and Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu and the Sun.

The D7 division was checked against the engine at the midpoint of all 84 arcs with zero mismatches. Jupiter's ingress dates were verified against a separate monthly scan from August 2026 to June 2032, which is how the retrograde re-entry in the second worked chart was identified as one passage rather than two arrivals. The comparison of the seven-planet and eight-planet karaka schemes comes from a separate 10,000-chart sample on the same generator. The population figures come from 100,000 charts generated on 26 August 2026 with seed 20260826: birth dates uniform over 1975 to 2005, clock times uniform over the day, birthplaces drawn uniformly from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Lucknow. 99,936 of the 100,000 returned a computed ascendant and all percentages are of those. The birth-time survival figures come from a separate 3,000-chart scan on the same engine.
