Which Industry Does My 10th Lord Point To?

Your 10th lord is one planet, and which planet it is was settled entirely by the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. Count nine signs forward from your rising sign to reach the 10th, and the planet that rules that sign is your 10th lord. It is the planet the house of work and public standing reports to.

That single planet is the start of the answer and nowhere near the whole of it. Only seven planets rule the twelve signs, so the 10th lord sorts you into one of seven groups, and in our sample the largest of those groups held 18.1% of charts. No industry is 18.1% of the working population. Four further things narrow it, all of them computable from the same birth data, and this page works through each one and then measures how often they agree.

Finding your own 10th lord

The table below is fixed. Given a rising sign, the 10th sign and its ruler are the same for everybody, so this is a lookup rather than a calculation.

Five of the seven planets rule two signs each, which means your 10th lord is usually also the ruler of a second house in your chart. That second house matters, because one planet is carrying both jobs and the two houses become entangled. The fourth column names it.

Two pairs of rows are worth reading twice. A Libra or a Scorpio rising chart has the Moon or the Sun as its 10th lord, and those two planets rule one sign each, so the 10th lord carries the 10th house alone and nothing else. A Virgo or a Pisces rising chart has one planet ruling both the 1st house and the 10th, so the person and the working life answer to the same planet, and whatever happens to it happens to both at once.

There is no way around the birth time here. No time means no rising sign, no rising sign means no house numbers, and without house numbers the 10th house cannot be located at all. Our engine refuses to compute an ascendant when the birth time is the 12:00 placeholder, because a wrong rising sign hands the 10th house to the wrong planet and then answers confidently about somebody else's career.

Why the planet on its own cannot name an industry

Here is how the seven planets divide the population, measured on 99,929 charts cast by our engine.

The shares are uneven because the rising signs themselves are uneven. Signs do not take equal time to rise at a given latitude, and at New Delhi our engine put Cancer and Libra rising in 9.8% of charts each while Pisces rose in only 5.9%. Mercury tops the table because it rules both Gemini and Virgo, and those are the 10th signs for Virgo rising and Sagittarius rising, two ascendants that between them account for 18.1% of the sample.

What each planet does say is the kind of work rather than the field. AstroMedha's career engine keeps one sentence per planet for exactly this purpose, used whenever a planet carries the vocation role, and these are those sentences as they ship.

Read the Mercury row and notice what it is describing. It fits a lawyer, a salesperson, a data analyst, a translator and a schoolteacher equally well, because all five spend the day moving information between people who need it. That is the level a planet answers at. It names the verb of the work, and the industry is a separate question, decided by where the planet stands and what it is standing beside.

Our engine does not output an industry name, and that is a decision rather than a missing feature. A classical text will tell you Saturn governs iron, labour, mining and long service, and a modern reader living that Saturn-flavoured working life may be running a compliance function at a bank. The tradition names materials and occupations from a pre-industrial economy, so mapping them onto current job titles is a judgement about the present rather than a computation from the chart. What the chart does compute is the shape of the work: the verb, the conditions it happens under, the people it answers to, and the arena it becomes visible in. This page computes all four, and leaves the naming of the industry where it belongs, with you and that shape in front of you.

Narrowing one: the sign your 10th lord sits in

The sign the 10th lord occupies does two separate things. It sets the planet's dignity, meaning how much of its own nature the planet gets to express, and it hands the planet a second ruler called the dispositor, which the next section covers.

Every planet has one sign where it is exalted and at full strength, the sign directly opposite where it is debilitated and at its weakest, and one or two signs it owns outright and is at home in. Everywhere else it is neutral. Here is how 10th lords actually land.

The house it lands in matters as much as the sign, because that is the part of life the working life gets routed through. Across the sample the 10th lord fell almost evenly across the twelve houses, between 7.8% and 8.7% in each, so grouping them is where the reading is.

A quarter of all charts have their 10th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th. If yours is one of them, the useful reading is not that the career is doomed. It is that the career arrives through that terrain rather than around it: through daily grind and beating rivals, through handling crises and other people's assets, or through work done at a distance and out of sight. Worked example three below is a 12th-house case, and its career signal turns out to be strong.

Is a debilitated 10th lord a problem? It is one signal out of five, and the tradition answers it with a specific rule rather than a reassurance. When the planet that rules the sign of debilitation, or the planet exalted in that sign, sits in an angle, the debilitation is cancelled, and the classical reading becomes strength arrived at through early difficulty. Our engine detects this as Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, and it fires on worked example three, where the 10th lord is Saturn debilitated in Aries. The D10 is the other place to look, because a planet weak in the birth chart can be strong in the career chart, and on that same example it is exalted there. Plain words. Exaltation means the sign where the tradition rates a planet strongest. Debilitation means the sign where the tradition rates a planet weakest. Own-sign means the sign that planet rules. Varga means the scheme of divisional charts cut from the main one.

Which ascendants get a well-placed 10th lord most often is not even either, because exaltation and own signs sit at fixed places in the zodiac while the 10th sign is fixed by the ascendant.

The bottom four rows are the four ascendants whose 10th lord is the Moon, the Sun or Mercury. The Moon and the Sun own one sign each. Mercury owns two, Gemini and Virgo, but Virgo is also the sign it is exalted in, and exaltation outranks ownership on the dignity scale, so a Mercury standing in Virgo is read as exalted rather than as at home. Mercury is the only one of the seven whose exaltation sign is a sign it also rules, which leaves it one own-sign square rather than two. Its debilitation sign is Pisces, which it does not own. So all three of these planets have fewer squares on the board where they can be at home. That is arithmetic about the zodiac rather than a statement about those charts, and it is worth knowing before you read anything into a neutral 10th lord.

One more comparison worth making: is your 10th lord the strongest planet in your chart? Rank the seven planets by dignity using AstroMedha's own dignity scale, breaking ties by how far each has travelled into its sign, and the planet at the top of that list was the 10th lord in 14.6% of charts. In 44.9% of charts the strongest planet was exalted and in a further 38.1% it was in its own sign, so nearly every chart has at least one planet in good condition somewhere. For the 85.4% where that planet is not the 10th lord, it is describing an area of life the career is not currently built on, and that is often the most useful line on the list, because it names a strength the working life is leaving on the table.

Narrowing two: the dispositor, which is who your 10th lord answers to

The dispositor is the planet that rules the sign your 10th lord is sitting in. If your 10th lord is Venus and Venus sits in Cancer, then the Moon rules Cancer, the Moon is the dispositor, and Venus is a guest in the Moon's house. The classical reading is that the guest's business gets conducted on the host's terms.

This is the signal readers most often skip, and it is the one that most often changes the answer. A Mercury 10th lord in Capricorn is doing Mercury work under Saturn's conditions: information and negotiation, inside a structure, on a long clock, with rules. The same Mercury in Aries is doing Mercury work under Mars: information and negotiation, at speed, against competitors, in short cycles. Same verb, different industry.

In our sample 15.8% of charts had the 10th lord in one of its own signs, which makes the planet its own dispositor and means the work runs on its own terms with nobody above it. For the other 84.2% there is a second planet in the chain, and the first thing to check about it is its own condition.

A strong 10th lord whose dispositor is weak reads as real capability working through a compromised channel, which usually shows up in a life as the right skills inside the wrong structure. That is a different problem from a weak 10th lord and it has a different answer: change the structure rather than the skill.

Narrowing three: the nakshatra, the layer that actually separates people

A nakshatra is one of 27 segments of 13 degrees 20 minutes each that the sidereal zodiac divides into, cutting across the boundaries of the twelve signs. Every planet is in a sign and also in a nakshatra, and each nakshatra has its own ruling planet, deity, symbol and character.

The reason this layer carries so much weight is structural, and it is checkable in one line. In ten of the twelve signs, the planet that rules the sign does not rule any nakshatra inside that sign. The two exceptions are Leo, where the Sun rules both the sign and Uttara Phalguni, and Pisces, where Jupiter rules both the sign and Purva Bhadrapada, and they are the bolded rows below. So the nakshatra names a third planet, different from your 10th lord and different from its dispositor. Here is the whole table, derived from the engine's own nakshatra boundaries.

The two entries in bold are the only cases where a sign's own ruler also rules a nakshatra inside it. Measured on the charts rather than on the table, the dispositor and the nakshatra lord of the 10th lord were the same planet in 1.8% of cases, and in 72.3% of charts the 10th lord, its dispositor and its nakshatra lord were three different planets.

That is why a nakshatra is not a decoration on top of a sign. It brings a genuinely new planet into the reading of your working life.

Which planet does the nakshatra layer hand you? Across the sample it was close to even, between 10.6% and 11.5% for each of the nine, and that nine includes Rahu and Ketu. In 22.9% of charts the nakshatra lord of the 10th lord was one of those two nodes, and neither node rules a sign. When that happens, the nakshatra layer is pointing at a planet that holds no house in your chart at all, which is the tradition's signature for work with no settled category: Rahu for the new market or the technology with no established practice yet, Ketu for the specialist depth that has no obvious job title.

The nakshatra also carries a purushartha, meaning which of the four classical aims of life it belongs to, and the engine stores that per nakshatra. Across the sample the 10th lord's nakshatra fell into Moksha in 26.4% of charts, Dharma in 25.8%, Artha in 25.7% and Kama in 22.1%. Artha is the aim of material security and acquisition, so a 10th lord in an Artha nakshatra is the most straightforward reading of a career built for earning. Dharma is duty and right conduct, Kama is desire and enjoyment, and Moksha is release and the turn inward. A 10th lord in a Moksha nakshatra describes a working life that keeps asking what it is all for, and that is worth naming before you conclude something is wrong with the job.

And the pada? Each nakshatra divides into four quarters of 3 degrees 20 minutes, called padas. Adding the pada to planet, sign and nakshatra took our sample from 252 distinct combinations to 756, so the pada roughly triples the resolution of this layer. What it adds to the reading is which of the nakshatra's four faces you get. It is fine-grained enough to move with a few minutes of birth time, so it is the first thing to discount if your birth time is approximate.

Narrowing four: what is standing in the 10th house itself

Everything so far has followed the 10th lord away from the 10th house. The house itself is the other half of the reading.

An empty 10th house is the single most common result, at very nearly half of all charts, and it is not a finding about your career. It means the reading falls entirely to the 10th lord wherever it has gone, which is what the four sections around this one are for. Half the population is in this position and they all have jobs.

When the 10th house does hold planets, those planets describe the arena rather than the aptitude. A planet standing in the 10th is visible in your public working life whether or not it has anything to do with your skill. Rahu there is the appetite for scale and a public profile, Saturn there is a career built slowly and under weight, Venus there is work where appearance and relationships are the product. Each of the nine turned up in the 10th house in between 8.1% and 8.6% of charts, so none of them is rare.

The case worth calling out is the 8.6% where the 10th lord is itself standing in the 10th house. The house and its ruler are then the same planet, everything points at one place, and the career is unusually self-contained. That is the strongest single-signal result available anywhere in this reading, and worked example one is one of them.

Narrowing five: the D10, the chart that is only about work

The D10, or Dasamsha, is a second chart derived from the first. Each sign of the birth chart is cut into ten segments of three degrees, and where a planet falls inside its sign decides which sign it occupies in the D10. The tradition assigns this chart to career and public standing specifically, as against the 10th house of the birth chart, which describes the arena the career happens in.

The D10 is where the birth chart's answer gets checked, and it disagrees far more often than people expect.

The two figures to hold on to are 5.7% and 32.5%. A 10th lord strong in both the birth chart and the career chart is the genuinely uncommon result, roughly one chart in eighteen. Far more often, about one chart in three, the planet is strong in one of the two and ordinary in the other, and which way round it falls changes the reading completely. Strong in the birth chart and ordinary in the D10 reads as visible standing that the working life does not fully cash. Ordinary in the birth chart and strong in the D10 reads as the reverse, a career that delivers more than it displays.

The D10 lagna, being the ascendant degree cut into tenths, changes roughly every twelve minutes of birth time. That is the sharpest birth-time dependency anywhere in this reading, and it is also why a general answer cannot reach this layer at all.

One thing to know about what our product ships today. The D10 lagna and D10 10th lord used on this page were derived by applying the engine's own Dasamsha division rule to the engine's own computed ascendant longitude, which is the same function applied one step further. Wherever those two figures appear below, that is where they came from. The sixth voice: the Amatyakaraka

Every signal so far runs off your rising sign. The Amatyakaraka does not, and that is what makes it worth having.

It comes from Jaimini's system, and the rule is mechanical. Take the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn, measure how far each one has travelled into the sign it occupies, and rank them by that degree. The planet at the highest degree is the Atmakaraka, the karaka of the self. The second is the Amatyakaraka, the karaka of the working life. It is derived from degrees alone, with no reference to houses, ascendant or sign rulership, so it is a completely independent read on the same question.

Because it depends on degree rather than sign, it moves for the same reason the pada does. The Moon travels far enough in a day to change rungs on that ladder, so the Amatyakaraka needs a real birth time.

Roughly one chart in seven has its Amatyakaraka land on its 10th lord, and that is the case where two unrelated rules point at the same planet. When it happens it is the strongest confirmation available in this whole reading, because nothing about the derivation of the one rule constrains the other.

So how often do the signals agree?

This is the question the whole page has been building towards, and it has a measured answer. Take the five planets these rules name for one chart: the 10th lord, its dispositor, its nakshatra lord, the D10 10th lord, and the Amatyakaraka. Then count how many times the most-repeated planet appears.

Two charts in three have exactly one planet named twice, and that is the normal result. One chart in eight gets a three-way agreement, which is a genuinely convergent career signal. Fewer than one in a hundred gets four. All five agreeing happened three times in a hundred thousand charts.

The reflex on seeing this is to conclude the method is noisy. The opposite is true, and the reason is that these five rules are not five attempts at one question. They are five different questions that each happen to be answered by naming a planet.

• The 10th lord answers what the work itself is made of, the verb.
• Its dispositor answers whose terms the work runs on, the conditions.
• Its nakshatra lord answers how the work is done at close range, the texture and the temperament inside it.
• The D10 10th lord answers what the working life becomes publicly, the standing rather than the doing.
• The Amatyakaraka answers what you are for, arrived at from outside the house system entirely.

Read that way, five different planets is a full description rather than a contradiction. It says that the verb of your work, the conditions you do it under, the way you do it, what it makes of you, and what you are for are five different things, which for most working people is simply true. A three-way agreement says the opposite: that several of those collapse into one, and the career is unusually singular. Both are answers, and neither is noise.

What the disagreement is not is a reason to keep asking until one signal wins. If your 10th lord is Saturn and your Amatyakaraka is Venus, the reading is a working life that rewards staying and building, where taste and trust decide what it is worth. That is a real and quite specific description of an architect's practice or a restaurant, and neither planet had to lose for it to be reached.

How many people share your combination

The other way to see the same thing is to build the reading up one layer at a time and count how many distinct answers exist at each step. Every figure below is measured on the same 99,929 charts.

The first row is what a general answer can reach: seven buckets, the largest of them holding nearly a fifth of everybody. The last row is what a birth chart reaches: 88,168 distinct readings across 99,929 charts, with 78.4% of people the only person in a hundred thousand carrying theirs.

The jump between the sixth row and the fifth is the one to notice. Adding the D10 lagna on its own took the count from 6,222 to 43,018, because it depends on a twelve-minute slice of birth time that no other layer here depends on.

Three charts, worked all the way through

The three below were computed by AstroMedha's engine from the birth data shown, using Lahiri sidereal positions and whole-sign houses. Every sign, degree, nakshatra, dignity, yoga and date is engine output. The D10 lagna in each is the engine's Dasamsha rule applied to the engine's ascendant longitude, as described above. All dasha positions are current as of 26 August 2026.

Chart one: the signals converge, and the planet is running its own period now

Born 13 May 1997, 11:35, Kolkata. Leo rising at 0.25 degrees, in Magha nakshatra, pada 1.

The 10th sign is Taurus and its ruler is Venus, so Venus is the 10th lord.

Venus is named by three of the five signals, which puts this chart in the 12.2%. It is also one of the 8.6% where the 10th lord stands in the 10th house, and one of the 10.0% where the D10 lagna happens to fall in the same sign as the birth-chart lagna.

This chart shows Malavya Yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha or "great person" combinations, which fires here because Venus is dignified in an angular house. It also reports a Raja Yoga on Mars, which rules both the 4th and the 9th for a Leo rising chart and is therefore a yogakaraka, a single planet holding an angle and a trine at once.

So the verb is Venus, arriving three separate ways: work where taste and relationships decide the value, run on its own terms, and publicly visible. The nakshatra is where it stops being purely Venusian. Krittika is ruled by the Sun and its symbol is a blade, and Krittika's classical character is cutting and purification, which is the sharp edge inside the Venus finish rather than the softness. A Venus 10th lord in Krittika reads as taste with a judgement in it: editing, curating, deciding what is not good enough, rather than making things pleasant.

The Amatyakaraka disagrees, and it disagrees usefully. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn in the 6th house of daily work and rivals, so the karaka of the working life is the one weak thing on the list. The engine also reports Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga on that Jupiter, meaning the debilitation is cancelled. Read together, what this person is for in Jupiter's terms is widening what other people can do, and that capacity starts under strain and in the grind rather than being handed over at the start.

There is a sixth voice on this chart, and it does not agree either. The product's own D10 headline leads on Mercury, in its own sign of Gemini inside the D10, because the engine picks its D10 lead by dignity and Mercury has the best of them here. That answers a different question again: not who owns the 10th house of the career chart, but which planet is strongest anywhere in it. Mercury in its own sign there says the working life is carried by explaining and dealing, whoever owns the 10th.

The timing is the part to act on. This chart entered Venus's mahadasha on 24 December 2022, and it runs twenty years to 24 December 2042. The 10th lord's own major period is running right now, and it is the longest period in the whole 120-year cycle. The Venus sub-period inside it ran to 24 April 2026. The Sun sub-period, belonging to the nakshatra lord of the 10th lord, runs from 24 April 2026 to 24 April 2027, the Moon follows to 23 December 2028, and Mars to 22 February 2030. For a chart whose career signal converges on Venus, being inside the Venus mahadasha is the whole window, and it opened in 2022.

Chart two: all five signals name different planets

Born 23 April 1998, 21:10, Pune. Scorpio rising at 11.03 degrees, in Anuradha nakshatra, pada 3.

The 10th sign is Leo and its ruler is the Sun.

Five signals, five planets. This chart sits in the 20.3%, and it is a good demonstration of why that is a description rather than a failure.

The Sun is exalted, which is the top of the dignity scale, and it is standing in the 6th house rather than the 10th. The 6th is daily work, service, competition and rivals. An exalted 10th lord there is a career whose authority gets established by out-competing people in the ordinary work, day after day, rather than by being appointed to it. Its dispositor is Mars in its own sign of Aries, sitting in the same house, so the conditions are Mars's conditions: contest, deadline, direct action. The engine detects that pair as a Raja Yoga, because Mars rules the 1st and the Sun the 10th for a Scorpio rising chart, and an angle lord joined to a trine lord in one sign is the textbook combination for rise in standing.

Then the nakshatra hands the reading to Ketu, which rules no sign at all. Ashwini's character is speed, healing and starting things, and Ketu's own signature is depth without a category. Inside a Sun-and-Mars career of contest and authority, that is the person who goes first, fixes the broken thing, and does not stay for the ceremony.

The D10 says something none of the others do. Its 10th lord is the Moon, so what this working life becomes publicly is Moon-flavoured: people, care, a public-facing role. That is a long way from Mars in the 6th, and both are true at once. The private mechanics of the work are competitive and the public face of it is not.

Rahu stands alone in the 10th house of this chart, which puts the appetite for scale and profile directly into the arena. The product's own D10 lead here is Venus in its own sign of Libra, and Venus is also the Amatyakaraka, so those two independent rules do agree with each other even though neither agrees with the 10th lord. Venus in the D10 and Venus as the Amatyakaraka together say the working life is finally valued on taste and on who trusts you.

The full description is therefore quite specific, and no planet had to win for it to be reached: competitive daily work under deadline pressure, entered fast and fixed first, that becomes a public and people-facing role, and is ultimately judged on relationships and finish.

On timing. This chart is in Mercury's mahadasha, from 16 December 2021 to 16 December 2038, and Mercury is none of the five signals. What is running inside it is the Venus sub-period, from 10 May 2025 to 10 March 2028, and Venus is both the Amatyakaraka and the strongest planet in the D10. The Sun's own sub-period follows, from 10 March 2028 to 15 January 2029. The Sun's mahadasha does not arrive until December 2065, so the 10th lord's own major period is not something this person will be planning around, and the sub-periods are where that signal actually surfaces.

Chart three: the 10th lord is weak and hidden, and the answer is elsewhere

Born 22 March 2000, 11:00, Bengaluru. Taurus rising at 22.96 degrees, in Rohini nakshatra, pada 4.

The 10th sign is Aquarius and its ruler is Saturn.

This is the case people write in about. The 10th lord is debilitated, it sits in the 12th house, which is the most hidden house in the chart, and on the face of it the career signal has collapsed. Three separate things say otherwise.

First, the debilitation is cancelled. This chart shows Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga on this Saturn. The classical reading of that pattern is standing reached through early difficulty rather than handed over at the start.

Second, the D10 reverses it outright. Saturn is debilitated in Aries in the birth chart and exalted in Libra inside the D10, and the product's own D10 read leads on it and calls it "at its strongest". This chart is in the 32.5% where the 10th lord is strong in exactly one of the two charts, and the direction matters here: weak in the arena, strong in the career chart, which reads as a working life that delivers considerably more than it displays.

Third, Saturn here is a yogakaraka. For a Taurus rising chart Saturn rules the 9th and the 10th, a trine and an angle at once, and the chart shows the single-planet Raja Yoga for exactly that reason. So the weak-looking planet is also the most structurally important one in the chart.

Now look at the three signals that do agree. The nakshatra lord, the D10 10th lord and the Amatyakaraka are all Venus, which puts this chart in the 12.2% with a three-way convergence, and the convergence is on a planet that is not the 10th lord at all. Venus is also standing in the 10th house here, with Mercury beside it, so the arena is occupied by the planet the reading converges on.

Read the whole thing together and it is coherent rather than contradictory. The 10th lord is Saturn: work that rewards staying, building the structure that is still there in ten years, done from the 12th house, meaning behind the scenes, at a distance, or inside something larger. What it is for, how it is done and what it becomes publicly are all Venus: taste, relationships, and a finish that other people trust. Bharani, where Saturn sits, is an Artha nakshatra, the aim of material security, with Yama for its deity and endurance and bearing for its character. Saturn's conditions come from Mars in its own sign, which is drive and directness.

On timing. This chart is in Jupiter's mahadasha, 19 February 2020 to 19 February 2036. Jupiter is none of the five signals, so the current chapter is not a career-signal chapter. Inside it the Mercury sub-period runs to 25 January 2027, and Mercury is one of the two planets standing in the 10th house. The Venus sub-period, belonging to the planet three of five signals converge on, runs from 1 January 2028 to 1 September 2030. Saturn's own mahadasha opens on 19 February 2036 and runs nineteen years to 2055. For a chart whose 10th lord is a cancelled debilitation that turns out exalted in the career chart, that 2036 opening is the dated thing to know about, and knowing it is the difference between waiting well and concluding the reading was wrong.

What to do with your own answer

If three or more of your signals name one planet, which happened for 13.0% of charts, treat that planet's verb as the spine of the working life, and choose between industries by which of them lets that verb run all day. Then check its dasha, because a convergent signal whose planet gets no major period for thirty years is a description of your capability rather than a description of your next five years.

If your five signals name four or five different planets, which happened for 72.0% of charts, do not go looking for a tiebreaker. Write the five answers out as a sentence, in the order the section above gives them: the verb, the conditions, the texture, the public form, the purpose. Most people find that sentence describes a job they can name, and it is a far narrower target than any one of the five planets on its own.

If your 10th lord is debilitated or in the 6th, 8th or 12th, check two specific rules before concluding anything, because both are computable and either one can reverse the reading.
