What the Atmakaraka Actually Is
Most of a birth chart is read from position: which planet sits in which house, which sign, aspected by what. The chara karakas are read from degree instead. Strip the sign away from every planet so only the degree within that sign is left, rank those numbers from highest to lowest, and the ranking itself hands out the roles. The planet at the top becomes the Atmakaraka, the significator of the self. The next becomes the Amatyakaraka, and so on down to the Darakaraka at the bottom.
This makes the Atmakaraka unusually personal. Two people born in the same city on the same morning share a rising sign and most of their houses, but a narrow gap at the top of the ladder means they can carry different Atmakarakas. It also makes it unusually sensitive to your birth time, which is the honest caveat the rest of the internet leaves off.

Seven Karakas or Eight? The Texts Disagree
There is no single right answer to return here, and any calculator that gives you a bare planet name is quietly picking a side. Jaimini's own sutra 1.1.10 contains the word for "or": seven or eight. BPHS 32.1-2 lists three positions and adjudicates none of them. The K.N. Rao and Rangacharya lineage teaches seven, from the Sun through Saturn. Other teachers include Rahu as an eighth, ranked on thirty degrees minus its own degree, on the reasoning that Rahu enters a sign at the far end and works backwards through it.
This calculator defaults to the sapta-7 reading, states that it is doing so, and shows you what the eight-planet school would return alongside. The difference is not academic. The scheme moves the Amatyakaraka, the career karaka, far more often than it moves the Atmakaraka itself, so if you came here with a question about work, the scheme is the first thing you should want disclosed.
Why Your Birth Time Decides This
The Moon moves about half a degree an hour. Every other planet moves more slowly, but the ranking only cares about gaps, and gaps at the top of the ladder are often small. When the leader and the runner-up sit within half a degree of each other, a fifteen-minute error in the time on your birth certificate is enough to swap them, and with them the whole reading.
Rather than assert a planet and stay quiet about it, this tool recomputes your entire ladder at fifteen minutes either side of the time you entered and tells you if the answer moved. If you gave no birth time at all, it recomputes at both ends of your birth date instead, so you can see whether the day itself settles the question. A fragile Atmakaraka is not a broken result. It is a signal that the next useful step is confirming your birth time, not reading further.
What This Calculator Shows That Others Do Not
A planet name on its own is not a reading, and it is not checkable. Every result here comes with the full ladder rather than the top rung, the degrees rendered to the arcsecond, the runner-up and the exact margin, the scheme we ranked under, the ayanamsa and the lunar node the ephemeris used, the tie-break rule, and the alternative school's answer. If two calculators hand you different planets, this is the information that tells you why. Precision is what a calculator can control, so that is what we disclose, and we do not dress it up as certainty about a birth time we cannot verify.

What is the Atmakaraka?
The Atmakaraka is the chara karaka, or movable significator, of the self in Jaimini astrology. It is found by degree rather than by house: among the eligible planets, the one sitting at the highest degree within whatever sign it occupies takes the role. Because it is decided by degree alone, the Atmakaraka is one of the few chart factors that two people born minutes apart can genuinely differ on.
How is the Atmakaraka calculated?
Take each eligible planet's sidereal longitude, strip out the sign so only the degree within the sign remains, and rank them from highest to lowest. The highest is the Atmakaraka, the next is the Amatyakaraka, and so on down the ladder to the Darakaraka. Is Rahu counted as an Atmakaraka?
The texts genuinely disagree, and the disagreement is in the source rather than in a bad copy. Jaimini 1.1.10 carries the word or in the phrase itself, seven or eight, and BPHS 32.1-2 recites three positions without settling any of them. The K.N. Rao and Rangacharya lineage teaches seven. Other teachers argue for eight, counting Rahu at thirty degrees minus its own degree because it moves backwards through a sign. This calculator defaults to the seven-planet reading and also shows you what the eight-planet school would return, so the choice is visible instead of hidden.
Does the Atmakaraka change with birth time?
It can, and this is the part most calculators leave out. The Moon covers roughly one degree every two hours, so a birth time that is off by fifteen minutes can move it far enough to reorder the top of the ladder. When the top two planets are close, the answer is decided by your clock rather than by your chart. This tool recomputes your ladder at fifteen minutes either side of the time you gave and flags it when the answer moves.
Is Ketu ever the Atmakaraka?
No, and the reason is arithmetic rather than doctrine. Ketu is always exactly one hundred and eighty degrees from Rahu, which is exactly six signs, so Ketu's degree within its sign is identical to Rahu's in every chart ever cast. Including both would mean ranking the same number twice. Ketu is never in the pool here.
