The minister to the king

Start at the top of the chara karaka ranking, then keep going down it. Sorting the classical planets by degree produces a ladder of offices. The second rung is the amatyakaraka.

Amatya means minister or counsellor. The image the tradition uses is a court: the atmakaraka is the king, and the amatyakaraka is the minister who carries out what the king intends. The atmakaraka names the agenda. The amatyakaraka names how it gets executed.

What it adds

On its own the atmakaraka is a subject with no method attached. The amatyakaraka supplies the method, which is why the atmakaraka and the amatyakaraka are read together. The pair is more informative than either alone.

A Saturn atmakaraka with a Mercury amatyakaraka describes endurance executed through communication and analysis: a person who outlasts things by understanding them. The same Saturn with a Mars amatyakaraka executes the same endurance through direct force. Same agenda, entirely different working life.
