When Will I Meet the Person I Marry?

Most timing readings answer a different question from the one that was asked. You want to know when the person turns up. What comes back is a wedding age band, which is the date at the far end of the same story.

A Vedic chart does separate the two, and the separation is arithmetic rather than interpretation. One layer of the chart says which years your seventh house of partnership is switched on. A second layer says which months inside those years the sky lands on that same house. The first opening is when the subject enters your life. The second is when it concludes. Across 99,916 computed charts the gap between them runs a median of 5.5 months, and in 28.9 per cent of charts it runs a year or more. That gap is the answer to your question, and this page shows you how to find yours.

Meeting and marrying are two dates, and the chart holds both

Classical Vedic timing rules fix the marriage, not the introduction. No rule in the tradition names the day two people are put in a room together. What the rules do name is the period in which the seventh house becomes the active subject of your life, and any meeting that leads to a marriage sits inside that period, ahead of the event that closes it.

So the answerable form of your question has two parts. When does my seventh house open, and how long does it stay open before the transit that lands it arrives? Both are dates. Both come out of your own birth data, and neither can be guessed from your age or your sun sign.

The reason the two dates differ is that the tradition uses two clocks and both have to agree. The Vimshottari, which is the 120-year cycle of planetary periods counted from the Moon's position at your birth, decides which subject your life is currently about. Each period inside it is a dasha, meaning a span of years ruled by one planet. It moves slowly, in chapters of six to twenty years. Jupiter's and Saturn's transits decide when a favourable subject resolves into an event. They move on their own schedule, roughly a year per sign for Jupiter and two and a half for Saturn, and they take no notice of your dasha at all. A meeting happens when the first clock has opened the subject. A wedding happens when the second clock arrives to close it.

The three things that have to line up

A marriage window in this method is built from three separate readings, and a timing answer built on just one of the three is why so many of them feel vague.

The structure. Your seventh house, the house of the spouse and of partnership, counted whole sign from your lagna, which is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place you were born. With it, the planet that rules that sign, whatever sits inside the house, and the condition each of them is in. Structure does not date anything. It decides how much a good date is worth when one arrives.

The period. Which planet is running your chapter, and which is running the sub-period inside it. The tradition holds that marriage occurs during the dasha of a planet that carries the seventh house, and nine roles qualify a planet to carry it: lord of the seventh, a planet sitting inside the seventh, Venus as the karaka of marriage, lord of the second house of family, lord of the eleventh house of fulfilled wishes, the Darakaraka, the planet holding your seventh lord in its sign, any planet sitting with your seventh lord, and lord of the ascendant of the Navamsha, which is the ninth divisional chart, meaning a second chart made by cutting every sign into nine parts, and the one the tradition assigns to marriage.

A karaka is the natural significator of a subject, meaning the planet that stands for it in every chart whatever else that chart does. The Darakaraka is a second kind of significator, taken from degrees rather than from houses: it is the planet holding the lowest degree within its own sign, counted across the seven moving planets, and the Jaimini branch of the tradition reads it as the significator of the spouse. Each of the nine roles is worth a fixed number of points, and a period scores from the roles its two ruling planets hold.

The trigger. Jupiter and Saturn reaching your seventh sign, either by sitting in it or by aspecting it. In this system a planet acts on houses it does not occupy, through aspect, which is the gaze it casts across the chart from where it stands. Jupiter gazes at the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself. Saturn gazes at the 3rd, 7th and 10th. Each also acts on the sign it occupies. So either planet reaches four of the twelve signs at any moment, and the classical marriage trigger is the moment both are reaching the same one.

The three answer different questions and none substitutes for another. Structure without a period is a chart that supports partnership in a year that is about something else. A period without a trigger is permission with nothing arriving to use it. A trigger without a period is the case in the second worked example lower down, where Jupiter sits squarely inside a woman's seventh house across three separate passages in 2029 and 2030 while her running sub-periods score 18 and 13 out of 100.

Step one: which sign is your seventh house

Houses here are counted whole sign. The sign rising at your birth is your first house in its entirety, the next sign along is your second, and the seventh sign along is your seventh house. That makes the seventh house the sign directly opposite your rising sign, and it makes the lord of that sign the most important planet in this whole question.

Across the 99,916 charts computed for this page, Saturn came out as lord of the seventh in 18.4 per cent, Jupiter in 18.3, Mars in 17.4, Venus in 16.5, Mercury in 15.2, the Moon in 7.5 and the Sun in 6.7. Saturn and Jupiter lead because each of them rules two signs. The Sun and Moon trail because each rules one.

The condition that lord is in matters as much as its identity. In the same sample, 70.0 per cent of seventh lords sat in a sign where they are neither strong nor weak, 13.8 per cent sat in their own sign, meaning the sign that planet rules, 8.6 per cent were exalted, which is the single sign in which a planet is at its strongest, and 7.6 per cent were debilitated, which is the sign opposite that one and the weakest placement a planet has. Exactly half the sample, 50.3 per cent, had at least one planet sitting inside the seventh house. The other half read the house entirely through its lord, which is normal and not a sign of an empty life.

Which periods carry the question in your chart

The Vimshottari cycle runs nine planetary periods in a fixed order, always the same order, starting from whichever point the Moon's position at your birth sets. The long period is the mahadasha, a chapter of six to twenty years ruled by one planet. Inside it run nine sub-periods, one for each planet, in the same fixed order beginning with the chapter's own lord, and a sub-period like that is called an antardasha, meaning the second level of the same cycle. Inside every antardasha run nine more in the same way, and the third level is the pratyantar, which can be as short as a few weeks.

The sub-period is what fires an event. The chapter sets the subject, and the sub-period inside it decides which months of the chapter the subject arrives in. So a period is scored on both, weighted towards the sub-period.

A planet earns its place in that scoring by the roles it holds in your chart, and the roles are worth these points:

A planet's total is then scaled by its condition: multiplied by 1.25 if it is exalted, by 1.20 in its own sign, by 0.70 if debilitated. Saturn or Ketu sitting on the marriage axis with no role of its own takes a penalty instead, because the tradition reads either of them there as the classical delay signature rather than as a neutral passenger.

Two of the roles in that table, the Darakaraka and the lord of the Navamsha ascendant, behave differently from the rest. The Darakaraka is read from degrees alone and ignores the houses entirely, so it regularly names a planet that the house-based reading never touches at all. The Navamsha is the tradition's own chart of marriage, so the lord of its ascendant times events inside the marriage story rather than in the rest of the life.

The practical effect is that the planet which opens your marriage window is often not the one you would guess. Across the sample, the sub-period lord that opened the first strong window was Venus in 32.3 per cent of charts, Jupiter in 22.0, Saturn in 14.0, Mercury in 13.1, Mars in 8.0, the Moon in 4.3, the Sun in 2.7, Rahu in 2.3 and Ketu in 1.1. Venus leads by a wide margin because it holds the karaka role in every chart. It still means that in two charts out of three the window opens under something else.

How long your sub-period runs

The length of every sub-period is fixed arithmetic rather than a judgement, so you can read yours straight off a table. Each mahadasha is divided among the nine planets in proportion to their own dasha lengths: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, adding to 120.

Antardasha length in months, by chapter and by sub-period lord:

A Venus sub-period inside a Venus chapter runs 40 months. The same Venus sub-period inside a Sun chapter runs 12. Jupiter and Saturn, dated for the next seven years

The transit half of the answer is the same sky for everyone, so it can be printed in full. What differs from person to person is only which sign your seventh house happens to be.

These are sidereal positions, computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa. A sign appears more than once because each planet turns retrograde, which is the period when it appears from Earth to move backwards, for a few months every year, and steps back into the sign it has just left before returning to it. Each date is the first day the new sign holds, found by binary search to the day.

Jupiter, 26 August 2026 to 26 August 2033:

To use these directly, take your seventh house sign from the table further up and apply the aspect rule. Jupiter reaches your seventh sign when it is in that sign, or in the sign four along, six along, or eight along from it, counting forwards. Saturn reaches it when it is in that sign, or three along, six along, or ten along. Someone whose seventh house is Aquarius is touched by Jupiter while Jupiter is in Aquarius, Gemini, Leo or Libra, which by the table above means most of 2029 and the second half of 2030.

The double transit, by seventh-house sign

Jupiter alone on the seventh house is common. Across the 99,916 charts, Jupiter touched a person's seventh sign for a median of 107.4 months out of the 324 months between their eighteenth and forty-fifth birthdays, which is 33.1 per cent of that span. Saturn touched it for a median of 110.0 months, 34.0 per cent. A signal present a third of the time is not a date.

Both at once is a different matter. The median chart had Jupiter and Saturn on its seventh sign together for 35.4 months out of 324, which is 10.9 per cent of the span, arriving in a median of 8 separate passages of about four months each. That is the classical trigger, and it is sparse enough to name months rather than years.

Here is every one of those passages for the next seven years, by seventh-house sign, counting only those lasting twenty days or more. A shorter overlap is a retrograde sliver rather than a season, and the same twenty-day floor is used throughout the timing engine.

Notice how uneven the rows are. Virgo gets one passage of eighty-nine days in seven years. Aries gets four. The unevenness is not a defect in the calculation. It is what a twenty-year cycle between two slow planets looks like when it is cut into twelve pieces, and it is why two people of the same age with different rising signs get answers years apart.

A row on that table is half of your answer. It tells you when the sky reaches your seventh house. It says nothing about whether your own periods are running the marriage significators at the same time, and that is the half that needs your birth data.

What 100,000 charts say about the gap between the two

To measure the interval between the opening and the landing, we generated 100,000 birth charts, scanned each one from its own eighteenth to its own forty-fifth birthday, scored every mahadasha and antardasha pair in that span, then laid the real Jupiter and Saturn transits over each chart's own seventh sign. 99,916 of the 100,000 returned a computed ascendant, and every figure here is of those.

A chart names several windows, not one. The median chart carried 7 strong windows between eighteen and forty-five, meaning windows scoring 55 or more out of 100. The tenth percentile was 4 and the ninetieth was 11. Only 0.2 per cent of charts had exactly one, and 97.5 per cent had three or more. At the looser threshold of 35 the median was 11. Any reading that hands you a single date has thrown away most of what the chart said.

A window is a season rather than a date. The median strong window ran 16 months. About a third of them, 34.7 per cent, ran under a year, and 39.3 per cent ran over two years. Consecutive strong windows began a median of 32 months apart. Summed across the whole twenty-seven-year span, the median chart spent 147 months, or 45.4 per cent of it, inside a strong window. Permission is not the scarce thing here.

The trigger is the scarce thing. Requiring a strong window and the double transit on the seventh house at the same time, for at least twenty days, cuts the median chart down to 15.8 months out of 324, which is 4.9 per cent of the span. Those months arrive in a median of 4 separate passages of about 3.3 months each. 96.3 per cent of charts got at least one such passage between eighteen and forty-five. The remaining 3.7 per cent got none at all in twenty-seven years, and the second worked example below is one of them.

The gap between the two is the answer to this page's question. Measuring from the day a strong window opens to the day the double transit first lands inside it, the median is 5.5 months. A quarter of charts are at 0.6 months or less, because the transit was already running when the window opened. A quarter are at 13.8 months or more. 48.2 per cent have six months or more of run-up, and 28.9 per cent have a year or more. Taken across every aligned passage rather than only the first, the median run-up is 8.0 months.

When the first one arrives. The median age at a chart's first aligned passage was 23.5. A quarter of charts reached it by 20.1 and a quarter had not reached it by 28.4. The ninetieth percentile was 34.4. Age on its own tells you very little, which is why the same question gets a different answer from two people born in the same year.

How likely is the next five years. Taking any age between twenty and forty and asking whether a strong window opens within the following sixty months, the answer was yes for between 76.9 and 81.2 per cent of charts, with almost no variation by age. Asking whether an aligned passage begins within the same sixty months, the answer was yes for between 42.0 and 46.7 per cent. So four charts in five open the subject within five years, and a little under half land the trigger inside the same five years.

That last pair of numbers is the honest shape of the answer. If you are asking this question at twenty-eight, there is roughly a four-in-five chance your chart opens a strong marriage window before you are thirty-three, and roughly a one-in-two chance the transit arrives to close it inside the same five years. The dates of both are specific to you, and what follows shows what they look like when they are actually computed.

A chart read end to end: the period is already open

What follows is a real computation on an illustrative birth, a woman born on 15 September 1996 at 04:11 in Hyderabad. Every value comes from the engine.

Her lagna is Leo, rising at 1.04 degrees inside Magha. A nakshatra is one of the twenty-seven segments the Moon passes through in a month, and Magha is the tenth of them. Her Moon is in Virgo at 21.10 degrees, inside Hasta, which is the thirteenth. From a Leo ascendant her seventh house is Aquarius, and the lord of Aquarius is Saturn.

Her seventh house is empty, which as we saw is true of half of all charts, so the house is read through Saturn. Saturn sits in Pisces in her eighth house, moving retrograde, with Ketu beside it. The lord of Pisces is Jupiter, which makes Jupiter her dispositor, and her Jupiter is in Sagittarius in its own sign. Her Darakaraka is Mercury, and Mercury is also the lord of her second house of family and the lord of her eleventh house of fulfilled wishes, and it is exalted in Virgo. Her Navamsha ascendant is Aries, ruled by Mars.

Put those roles through the points table and her weights come out as Mercury 7.5, Jupiter 4.8, Saturn 4.0, Venus 3.0, Mars 1.4, Ketu 1.0, and nothing at all for the Sun, Moon or Rahu. Mercury is the heaviest planet in her marriage chart, which is not what anyone would guess by looking at it, and it holds that position by carrying three roles at once with an exalted multiplier on top.

Her structure score is 43 out of 100. What lifts it is Jupiter, her karaka, in its own sign. What holds it down is her seventh lord falling in the eighth house, one of the three houses that make a subject arrive late or by an unexpected route, and Mangal Dosha at medium severity from Mars in her twelfth house, with Venus sitting alongside Mars as a recognised cancelling factor. Her computed age band is 29 to 33.

Her dasha ladder for the next five years:

Inside the Jupiter / Mercury window the pratyantars run Mercury to 15 May 2028, Ketu to 2 Jul 2028, Venus to 17 Nov 2028, Sun to 28 Dec 2028, Moon to 7 Mar 2029, Mars to 25 Apr 2029, Rahu to 27 Aug 2029, Jupiter to 15 Dec 2029, and Saturn to 25 Apr 2030.

Now the transit half. Her seventh sign is Aquarius, so from the double transit table above her passages are 25 August to 5 October 2029, and 1 May to 23 September 2030. Extending the scan across her whole eighteen-to-forty-five span, the only others are one that already went by between October 2017 and October 2018, and four more after 2036.

Laying the two clocks over each other gives her a specific answer:

• Her seventh house has been open since 7 July 2025 and stays open, at a score of 94 and then 100, until 25 April 2030. That is a run of nearly five continuous years in which partnership is the live subject of her chart. A meeting sits inside a run like that one.
• The trigger lands on 25 August 2029 and holds to 5 October. It arrives two days before her Rahu pratyantar hands over to Jupiter, and her highest-scoring window is running throughout, which is the strongest combination her chart produces before she is forty.
• The gap between that window opening on 18 January 2028 and the trigger arriving on 25 August 2029 is 19.2 months, well above the population median of 5.5. Her chart gives her a long run-up rather than a short one.
• A second and longer trigger arrives from 1 May to 23 September 2030, but by then her sub-period has changed to Jupiter / Ketu at a score of 55. The sky is better and the permission is weaker.

The reading that follows from this is not a wedding date. It is that the two and a half years from early 2028 are the part of her life the chart has assigned to this subject, that autumn 2029 is where the chart concentrates, and that the 2017 passage came and went while no supportive period was running, which is worth knowing about your own past before deciding the question has been going badly.

A second chart: the transit lands and the period does not

The second illustrative birth is a woman born on 24 May 1999 at 04:36 in Chennai. Her lagna is Aries, her Moon is in Leo, and her seventh house is Libra, ruled by Venus. Mars sits in that seventh house at 1.46 degrees of Libra, retrograde. Her Venus is in Gemini in the third house. Her Darakaraka is Mars, the same Mars that occupies the house.

Venus carries four roles in her chart at once: seventh lord, karaka, lord of her second house, and lord of her Navamsha ascendant, which is also Libra. Her Venus weight comes out at 11.0, the highest single weight in either example on this page. Her structure score is 42 out of 100, held down by Mars in the seventh and by Mangal Dosha at high severity with no cancelling factor present. Mars and Jupiter are both vargottama, meaning each occupies the same sign in the birth chart and in the Navamsha, which strengthens both.

By structure she is well set up. By timing she is in a long wait. Her chapter is Rahu, and Rahu holds no marriage role in her chart at all:

Meanwhile the sky is generous. Her Libra seventh house takes the full double transit from 26 December 2028 to 29 March 2029, and again from 5 October 2029 to 25 January 2030. Jupiter is literally sitting inside her seventh house for the whole of both. They fall inside sub-periods scoring 18 and 13.

Then the reverse happens. When Rahu / Venus opens on 31 December 2032 at a score of 100, Jupiter enters Aquarius on 18 March 2033 and stays until 28 March 2034, occupying the seventh house from her Moon and aspecting her Libra seventh house from nine signs away. Saturn is in Gemini through all of it and never reaches Libra. One part of the trigger arrives and the other does not, and the same holds for every strong window she has: across her entire eighteen-to-forty-five scan, no double transit ever overlaps a window scoring 55 or more. She is one of the 3.7 per cent.

What her chart is saying is worth stating plainly rather than softening. Her strongest period by a distance runs from 31 December 2032 to 31 December 2035, her age band is 33 to 36, and Jupiter alone lands on the axis in its first spring. The absence of Saturn does not close the question. It means the reading rests on the dasha as the primary evidence, with Jupiter's twelve months from March 2033 as the sharpest part of it, and it means the two openings in 2029 that look promising in the sky are not the ones to organise a year around.

Two charts, both of women in their late twenties, both with a structure score in the low forties, and the answers are five years apart in opposite directions. Nothing about age, appearance or effort produced that difference. It came entirely out of where two slow planets happen to sit relative to two different seventh houses.

What to do with the months in front of you

The practical use of a dated window is narrower than people expect and more useful than a prediction would be.

A window that is open with no trigger inside it yet, which is where the first example sat through the whole of 2026 and 2027, is the part of the sequence where introductions actually happen. The population median says the run-up is 5.5 months and the upper quarter says more than 13.8, so a window that opened last year with the trigger still ahead is doing exactly what the arithmetic predicts. Being in circulation during that period is the one input you control.

A window that is open with the trigger inside it, which for the first example is autumn 2029, is where an existing situation resolves. Classical practice reads it as the time a decision that has been forming gets made, rather than the time a stranger appears from nowhere.

A trigger with no window behind it, which is the second example's 2029, is worth recognising for what it is so that you do not read the quiet as failure. The sky is favourable and the chapter is about something else. A Rahu chapter running two sub-periods at 18 and 13 is not a chart that has gone wrong.

A window that has already passed is information rather than a loss. The first example had a strong window from May 2023 to July 2025 at a score of 100, and a double transit across 2017 and 2018 with nothing running behind it. Knowing which of your past periods carried this subject explains a good deal about which years felt like effort against a headwind.

Reading your own chart

The method and the two transit tables above work without your birth data, and they are the reason to read this even if you never enter anything into a form. The transit dates are the same sky for everyone, so once you know your rising sign you can read your own row of the double transit table and have the months, for the next seven years, when Jupiter and Saturn are both on your seventh house.

What needs your date, time and place is the other clock. Your dasha ladder is built from the Moon's exact position at the moment you were born, so it is different for every person born on a different day, in a different city, at a different hour. Without it you have the sky's half of the answer and none of yours.

Every sign, degree, nakshatra, house, condition, dasha date and transit date on this page was computed with the AstroMedha Vedic engine using the Lahiri ayanamsa and the Swiss Ephemeris, with mean nodes and whole-sign houses. Dasha dates come from the Vimshottari cycle counted from the Moon's sidereal longitude at birth, and sub-period and third-level dates are proportional divisions of the parent period. Transit ingress dates were found by day-resolution binary search over a seven-day scan, and a passage shorter than twenty days is excluded as a retrograde sliver.
