What Will My Spouse Be Like? Reading the 7th Lord and D9

A Vedic chart answers this in four separate places, and the four do not always agree. The 7th house and the planet that rules it say what kind of person arrives and through which door. A planet sitting inside the 7th, or one gazing at it from elsewhere in the chart, colours that person directly. The Navamsa, the ninth divisional chart, says what the partnership settles into once the arrival is over. The Darakaraka is a fourth reading, taken from the degrees the planets happen to hold rather than from the houses at all.

Where the four converge you have a description specific enough to recognise someone by. Where they disagree, the disagreement is itself the description, and it is usually the interesting part. This page shows how to read each layer, what to do when two of them point in opposite directions, and how much each added layer actually narrows the answer, measured across 100,000 charts computed on our own engine.

The one thing to settle first: which house is your 7th

Houses in this method are counted whole sign from the lagna, the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. The whole of that rising sign is the 1st house, the whole of the next sign is the 2nd, and so on around the circle. Your 7th house is therefore the entire sign directly opposite your rising sign, with no part of it spilling into a neighbour.

That opposition is what makes the 7th the house of the partner. It is the point in the chart furthest from the self, the one house you cannot occupy and look at from the same place. Everything in it is read as the other person, and as any binding agreement between two named parties.

The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it is the one part of the chart that needs your clock time as well as your date and your birthplace. Without a birth time the houses cannot be drawn, and the standard fallback is to count the same houses from the Moon's sign instead. That fallback keeps three of the four layers on this page intact, and the section on birth time below says exactly which one it costs you.

Layer one: the 7th lord

Every sign has a ruling planet, called its lord. The lord of your 7th sign is the planet responsible for delivering that house's affairs, wherever in the chart it happens to sit. Because the 7th sign is always opposite the 1st, your 7th lord is a fixed function of your rising sign, and you can read it straight off this table.

Only seven planets can ever be a 7th lord. Rahu and Ketu, the two lunar nodes, rule no sign in this system, so they never appear in that column. They can still occupy the 7th or aspect it, which is layer four.

The seven do not come up equally often, because signs take unequal amounts of time to climb the horizon at Indian latitudes and so rising signs are unevenly distributed. Across 100,000 charts computed for births between 1975 and 2005 at ten Indian cities, Cancer, Scorpio and Gemini each rose 9.3% of the time while Pisces rose 6.5%, and the 7th lord came out as follows.

There is the first reason a description drawn from the 7th lord alone is too wide to act on. If your 7th lord is Saturn, so is it for roughly one person in five that you will ever meet. The layers that follow are what take that number down, and the section near the end of this page measures how far.

Layer two: the sign and the condition of that lord, read separately

Two different questions get asked of the 7th lord, and running them together is the commonest mistake. The first is which sign it occupies, which describes the character of what it delivers and the setting the partner comes out of. The second is how well placed it is in that sign, which describes how easily the delivery happens. A planet can sit in a sign that suits your partnership and still be in poor condition there, and the reading is different from a planet that is comfortable but placed in an unhelpful sign.

Condition is called dignity, and it is fixed by a table rather than by judgement. Exalted means the planet is in the single sign where it performs at its strongest. Debilitated means the opposite sign, where it performs at its weakest. Own sign means the planet is in a sign it rules, so it is at home and answerable to nobody else. Everything else is neutral.

Across the same 100,000 charts, the 7th lord came out neutral 70.0% of the time, own sign 13.6%, exalted 8.7% and debilitated 7.7%. Seven charts in ten therefore have nothing to say at this layer, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a verdict here. When the dignity is neutral the description comes from the sign, from the dispositor, and from the nakshatra, which is the finer division the next section covers. None of those three is ever blank.

The dispositor is the lord of the sign your 7th lord sits in. It matters because a planet placed in another planet's sign hands its results on: the dispositor carries the 7th lord's business and delivers it in its own house and its own sign. Where the 7th lord is neutral and unremarkable, the dispositor is usually where the description is actually hiding. In the first worked example below it moves the answer from one house of the chart to another.

One more state gets read off the same line. A planet that is retrograde, which means moving backwards against the fixed stars as seen from Earth, is held to deliver its results on a delay and out of order rather than not at all. It applies to the five planets from Mars to Saturn, and to the two nodes, which never move any other way.

Layer three: the nakshatra and pada, which is the hinge of the whole reading

The zodiac is divided a second way as well. A nakshatra is one of 27 equal segments of 13 degrees 20 minutes, and every degree of the circle falls inside exactly one of them. Each nakshatra carries a ruling planet of its own, a presiding deity, a symbol, and one of the four aims of life. A planet always sits in two rulerships at once, the sign lord and the nakshatra lord, and the second is finer grained than the first.

The four aims are the categories the tradition sorts activity into. Dharma is duty and right conduct, Artha is material provision, Kama is desire and pleasure, Moksha is release. When a 7th lord sits in an Artha nakshatra the partnership is described as built around provision; in a Kama nakshatra, around wanting.

Each nakshatra is divided again into four quarters of 3 degrees 20 minutes, called padas. The pada is where this page turns, because of an arithmetic fact that most treatments skip over.

A sign is 30 degrees, which is exactly nine arcs of 3 degrees 20 minutes. A nakshatra is 13 degrees 20 minutes, which is exactly four of the same arc. Both divisions therefore sit on one shared grid of 108 arcs running round the whole zodiac, and the two never cut across each other. We checked this on the engine across all 108 arcs and found zero mismatches: the pada a planet occupies and the ninth-part of its sign that it occupies are the same piece of sky, counted from two different starting points.

That is why the pada number is worth writing down. It is not an extra decoration on the nakshatra name. It is the address that decides your D9, which is layer five.

Layer four: who sits in the 7th, and who is looking at it

A planet actually inside your 7th house describes the partner more directly than the 7th lord does, because it is in the room rather than responsible for the room. Half of all charts have nobody there. Across the 100,000, 49.8% of charts had an empty 7th house, 32.6% had exactly one planet in it, and 12.5% had two.

An empty 7th is information rather than a gap in the reading. It means the description is carried by the lord, its nakshatra and the D9 instead, and those are present in every chart. It is also why so many readings of an empty 7th sound generic: the reader stopped at the one layer that happened to be blank.

Aspects are the second half of this layer. Every planet gazes at the house directly opposite itself, seven houses away counting inclusively from its own. Four of them throw extra aspects as well, and those extras are why Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and the nodes turn up on a marriage axis so often.

Counting inclusively means you start the count on the planet's own house. A planet in the 12th throws its 8th aspect onto the 7th, because the 12th is the first house of the count and the 7th is the eighth. That one line resolves most of the confusion people have with aspect counting, and it is worth checking twice on your own chart before you draw conclusions from it.

Across the 100,000 charts, 16.8% had nothing aspecting the 7th at all, 34.4% had exactly one planet aspecting it and 29.1% had two. Jupiter landed on the 7th in 25.3% of charts, Rahu in 25.2%, Mars in 25.1%, Ketu in 24.8% and Saturn in 24.8%, against roughly 8.4% each for the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus. The gap of about three to one is entirely the extra aspects, and it says nothing about which planet matters more.

Layer five: the D9, and what it changes

The Navamsa, written D9, is a second chart built from the first. Take the 3 degree 20 minute arc each planet occupies, which is also its pada, and map it to a sign by a fixed rule: fire signs count their nine arcs from Aries, earth signs from Capricorn, air signs from Libra, water signs from Cancer. The signs that come out are the D9 positions, and the ascendant is mapped the same way to give a D9 rising sign.

The D9 is the chart the tradition reads for marriage specifically, and the reason is structural. The birth chart shows the arrival, the circumstances and the visible person. The D9 shows the durable form the same relationship takes once the circumstances have worn off. Two readings of one chart that disagree about a marriage usually disagree because one of them stopped at the birth chart.

Three things come out of the D9 for this question. The D9 rising sign and its lord set the frame of the marriage as a lived arrangement. The lord of the 7th sign counted from that D9 rising sign is a second spouse significator, and it is a different planet from your birth-chart 7th lord in 83.2% of charts, so it almost always adds a name rather than repeating one. And your birth-chart 7th lord has a dignity in the D9 as well as in the birth chart, which is where the D9 either confirms the first reading or overturns it.

That last one is measurable, and the number is larger than most people expect. Counting a planet as strong when it is exalted or in its own sign, across the 100,000 charts the 7th lord's strength held between the two charts in 65.6% of cases, dropped from strong to ordinary in 17.0%, and rose from ordinary to strong in 17.4%. Reading the birth chart alone therefore gets the strength of the marriage axis wrong in about one chart in three, and it gets it wrong in both directions about equally, so there is no safe side to err on.

A planet that lands in the same sign in both charts is called vargottama, and it is read as unusually consistent, showing one face in the arrival and in the long arrangement. The 7th lord was vargottama in 11.4% of charts, uncommon enough to be worth naming when it happens.

Layer six: the Darakaraka

The Darakaraka comes from Jaimini practice inside the same tradition, and it ignores your houses entirely. Take the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn and rank them by how far each has travelled into whatever sign it occupies, measured in degrees. The planet at the highest degree is the Atmakaraka, read as the self. The planet at the lowest degree of the seven is the Darakaraka, read as the spouse.

Because it is computed from degrees alone, the Darakaraka needs no birthplace, and it barely moves with the clock: an hour of error changes it on 4.19% of pairs. It is the one layer here that mostly survives a chart cast from the date alone, which makes it the natural place to start when the clock time is a family recollection. Mostly is the right word, though. The Moon covers thirteen degrees a day, so its degree within its sign moves further than any other planet's, and sampled at four times a day 47.25% of dates carry more than one Darakaraka across the day. A date-only ladder is a first pass rather than a conclusion.

Two conventions are worth stating rather than assuming, because they change the answer. First, the ladder here is built from seven planets, following BPHS 32.1 and the practice of K.N. Rao and Iranganti Rangacharya; schools that add Rahu build an eight-planet ladder and can name a different spouse karaka. Second, Ketu is never in the pool, and that is arithmetic rather than doctrine. Ketu sits exactly 180 degrees from Rahu, which is exactly six signs, so its degree within its own sign is identical to Rahu's in every chart that has ever been cast.

The Darakaraka turns out to be the same planet as the 7th lord in 14.0% of charts, which is close to what chance alone would produce with seven candidates. That is the point of including it. It is an independent voice, and when it agrees with the 7th lord the agreement carries weight.

Venus, Jupiter, and the convention this reading uses

Venus is the karaka of marriage in every chart, meaning the planet that signifies the thing itself whatever house or sign it occupies. In a woman's chart Jupiter additionally carries the husband, so both planets are read as significators there.

The part usually left unsaid is what happens when the reading has not been told whose chart it is. We state it in the payload rather than quietly picking a side: Venus stays primary, and Jupiter's husband layer is not applied. So if you want the Jupiter layer read, the chart has to know that it belongs to a woman, and a reading that applies it without being told is guessing.

Venus is worth reading in the D9 in its own right as well, since it signifies the thing the D9 is the chart of. A Venus that is exalted or in its own sign in the D9 is a different starting point from a Venus that is comfortable in the birth chart and ordinary in the ninth.

A chart read all the way through

Here is a chart born on 2 November 1990 at 21:15 in Delhi, computed on the engine with the Lahiri ayanamsa and the Swiss Ephemeris. Every value below came out of that computation.

The 7th house and its lord. Gemini rises, so the 7th sign is Sagittarius and the 7th lord is Jupiter. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, the strongest condition the delivery of a marriage can be in, and it sits in the 2nd house, the house of family and of what is kept and accumulated. Read alone, that says the partnership is well supplied and is bound up with family and with what this person holds on to.

Its nakshatra. Jupiter sits in Ashlesha pada 1. Ashlesha is ruled by Mercury, presided over by the Nagas, symbolised by the serpent, sorted under Dharma, and recorded with the quality "mystical, hypnotic". So the strongest planet on this marriage axis is answerable to Mercury at the finer level of rulership, and Mercury in this chart sits in Libra in the 5th alongside the Sun and Venus. The generosity in the reading arrives with a good deal of talk, negotiation and charm attached to it, and it comes out of the same part of the chart that holds romance.

Its dispositor. Jupiter is in Cancer, and Cancer's lord is the Moon, so the Moon carries Jupiter's results onward. The Moon is in Aries in the 11th house, the house of gains and of the wide social circle. Now the reading has a real tension in it: the 7th lord sits in the family house while the planet that carries its results sits in the house of the wide circle. Resolved rather than left hanging, that reads as a partner met through the broad circle and then absorbed into family, with the family arriving at the arrangement second rather than first.

Who occupies the 7th. Saturn is in the 7th house at 26.29 degrees of Sagittarius, in Purva Ashadha pada 4, in neutral condition. Saturn in the 7th is the classical delay signature, and delay is not denial: the marriage tends to arrive later than the people around this person expect, and to be steadier once it does. Saturn is also the Atmakaraka here, the planet at the highest degree in its sign, and it rules the D9 rising sign, so one planet arrives by three routes that were computed independently of each other.

Who aspects the 7th. Only Mars, retrograde in Taurus in the 12th, casting its 8th aspect onto the 7th. Mars sitting in the 12th from the lagna puts Mangal Dosha on this chart at medium severity, an affliction of the partnership axis counted when Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. At medium it is read as friction and impulse on the partnership rather than a barrier to it, and the retrograde motion says the friction tends to get revisited rather than settled once.

The D9. The D9 rising sign is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn, which is Saturn's third appearance. The 7th sign counted from that D9 ascendant is Leo and its lord is the Sun, so the second spouse significator in this chart is the Sun, which is debilitated in Libra in the birth chart. The chart that describes the arrival is carrying an exalted Jupiter, and the chart that describes the long arrangement is carried by a weak Sun. That is a different comparison from the 65.6 and 17.0 per cent figures above, which follow one planet across two charts; here two different planets carry the two charts. It is exactly why the birth chart alone would have overstated this axis.

Jupiter itself lands in Sagittarius in the D9, which is its own sign, so the 7th lord holds its strength across both charts even though it is not vargottama. Exalted in one chart and own sign in the other is genuinely strong. What the weak D9 7th lord adds is that the strength lives in the partner and in the supply, while the daily arrangement asks for more effort than the birth chart on its own suggests.

The Darakaraka. Ranked by degree within sign, the seven come out Saturn at 26 degrees 17 minutes, Mercury at 23 degrees 22, Mars at 19 degrees 36, Jupiter at 18 degrees 39, Venus at 16 degrees 29, the Sun at 16 degrees 13 and the Moon at 12 degrees 40. The lowest is the Moon, so the Moon is the Darakaraka. The Moon is also the dispositor of the 7th lord and the lord of the 2nd house of family, which means three separate methods, one from the Jaimini school and two from the house system, all name the same planet. Convergence of that kind is what makes a description worth acting on, and it points the reading back at the 11th house in Aries where that Moon sits.

Putting it together. Two planets keep returning. Jupiter is strong in both charts and sits in the family house, and Saturn shows up as the occupant of the 7th, as the ruler of the D9 rising sign and as the Atmakaraka. The description that follows is a partner who is generous, well provided for and connected to family, met through a wide social circle rather than arranged through the family first, arriving later than the people around this person expect, and steady once arrived. The friction sits on the Mars axis and recurs rather than resolving, and the daily arrangement asks for more work than an exalted 7th lord on its own would suggest.

The same method, a chart where it lands differently

A second chart, born 23 January 1997 at 04:50 in Kolkata, shows what changes when the layers agree instead of pulling apart.

Sagittarius rises, so the 7th sign is Gemini and the 7th lord is Mercury. Mercury sits in Sagittarius in the 1st house at 14.71 degrees, in Purva Ashadha pada 1, in neutral condition, and it aspects its own 7th house from there. Venus sits with it in the 1st, also in Purva Ashadha. A 7th lord in the 1st house keeps partnership inside the working part of the chart rather than out at a distance.

The dispositor tells a different story from the first chart. Mercury is in Sagittarius, whose lord is Jupiter, and Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn in the 2nd. So a neutral 7th lord in a helpful house hands its results to a planet sitting in its weakest sign, and the house of family and holdings is where that weakness lands.

The D9 rising sign is Leo, ruled by the Sun, and the D9 7th lord is Saturn. Mercury lands in Leo in the D9, neutral again. Venus, the marriage significator, lands in Libra in the D9, which is its own sign, so the significator of marriage is stronger in the chart of marriage than it is in the birth chart. The Darakaraka is the Moon at 1 degree 56 minutes of Cancer, and that Moon is vargottama, in Cancer in both charts. There is no Mangal Dosha here: Mars is in the 10th house, outside the afflicting set, and Jupiter sits five signs along from Mars and aspects it, which counts as a cancelling factor.

Read together, the second chart has less drama in it and more consistency. The one thing worth acting on is the debilitated dispositor: the partnership is easy to reach, and the strain shows up in the family and holdings house that carries it. That is a specific place to put effort, which is more useful than a verdict.

What your birth time does to all of this

The layers do not degrade equally when the clock time is uncertain, and knowing which ones survive is more useful than a general warning about accuracy.

We recomputed the first worked chart at every minute for forty minutes either side of 21:15. The rising sign stayed Gemini throughout, so the 7th sign, the 7th lord, its dignity, its nakshatra, its dispositor, the occupant of the 7th and the aspect onto it were unchanged across the whole eighty-minute span. The The Darakaraka was unchanged too, because the Moon at 12 degrees 40 minutes sits three and a half degrees clear of the Sun above it on the ladder, which is wide enough to absorb the Moon's half-degree of movement across eighty minutes. That margin is the reason rather than any independence from the clock.

The D9 rising sign was another matter. Aquarius held only from 21:12 to 21:26, a window fifteen minutes wide. Three minutes earlier than the recorded time it becomes Capricorn; twelve minutes later it becomes Pisces. The reason is arithmetic. The rising point moves about one degree every four minutes and a navamsa arc is 3 degrees 20 minutes, so roughly every thirteen to fifteen minutes of clock time the D9 ascendant steps to the next sign.

The practical rule follows from that. If your birth time comes from a hospital record or a birth certificate, read all six layers. If it is a family recollection to the nearest half hour, read the 7th lord with its sign, nakshatra, pada and dispositor, read the occupants and aspects, read the Darakaraka, and hold the D9 rising sign and the D9 7th lord loosely until the time is confirmed. Your birth-chart 7th lord's own D9 sign is safe either way, because it depends on that planet's degree rather than on the horizon.

How much does each layer actually narrow it

That is the question underneath the original one, and it can be answered with numbers rather than assertion. Across the same 100,000 computed charts we counted how many distinct descriptions each layer produces, and how common the commonest one is.

Read down that last column. Knowing only the 7th lord puts you in a group of roughly sixteen thousand people out of a hundred thousand. Adding its sign, its nakshatra and its pada, which is one line of arithmetic on top of a computed chart, puts you in a group of about a hundred and thirty. Adding the D9 sign of that lord and the Darakaraka puts the median chart in a group of sixteen, and eighty-nine of the hundred thousand charts were alone in their combination.

That progression is the honest answer to the original question. A description that fits one person in five is a horoscope column. A description drawn from all the layers together is specific enough that most people reading it recognise someone or recognise nobody, and both of those outcomes are useful.

What this method describes, and what it leaves alone

Personality, the setting the partner comes out of, the door they arrive through, the timing of the arrival and the durable shape of the arrangement are all carried by the layers above, and each one traces back to a computed value.

Physical appearance is the part the classical texts attach mostly to the sign of the 7th lord and to its nakshatra, and it is the part that identifies the fewest people. The Saturn group is 18.3% of charts, so an appearance sketch drawn from the sign alone fits about one person in five before it has narrowed anything at all. We compute the sign, the nakshatra, the pada and the deity and symbol the tradition records for that nakshatra, and we stop before converting them into height, complexion or build, because that conversion is the point where the reading stops being derivable from the chart and becomes an author's habit.

One more boundary worth being straight about. All of this describes the partner and the partnership, read from one chart.
