What Work Will My Spouse Do? Read It From Your Own Chart

Your spouse's work is read from the tenth house counted from the seventh house of your chart. The seventh house is the house of the spouse and of anyone you deal with one to one. The tenth house from any starting point is the house of work and public standing measured from that point. Counting your seventh sign as one and moving forward, the tenth sign along is your own fourth sign, in the Whole-Sign house system that AstroMedha's engine uses, every time. So the question "what work will my spouse do" is answered by the fourth sign of your chart, its ruling planet, and whatever planets are sitting in it.

That count holds for all twelve rising signs. There is no exception to look up.

Everything hangs on one input: your rising sign, called the lagna, which is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. It changes roughly every two hours, so it is the one part of a chart that a birth date alone cannot give you. Your birth time and birthplace decide it, and the measured cost of getting either of them wrong is set out below with numbers.

Count it yourself in four steps

1. Find your rising sign. Enter your birth date, birth time and birthplace in the free kundli tool. It prints your lagna at the top. Use the sidereal sign it gives you, which is the sign measured against the fixed stars, and is what every rule on this page is defined against.
2. Count three signs forward from it, and land on the fourth. Aries rising means Aries 1, Taurus 2, Gemini 3, Cancer 4. Your fourth sign is Cancer. The table above has all twelve if you would rather read it off.
3. Find that sign's ruling planet. Also in the table. That planet is your fourth lord, and it carries the reading wherever it has gone in your chart.
4. Look at which planets are sitting in that fourth sign. The same kundli printout lists every planet with its sign. Anything in your fourth sign speaks to your spouse's work directly.

Those four items are the whole Parashari reading of the question, named after the classical text this method comes from. Each one carries a good deal more than it looks like, starting with the one that is missing from about half of all charts.

The single most common case: nothing is there at all

Most people are told to look at the planets in the fourth house. For about half of everyone, there is nothing to look at.

Across 175,320 charts cast for New Delhi, one for every hour of every day from 1 January 1985 to 1 January 2005, counting the seven planets from the Sun through Saturn plus the two nodes Rahu and Ketu, the fourth house was completely empty in 86,244 of them, 49.19 percent. One planet occupied it in 33.44 percent, two in 12.15 percent, and three or more in 5.21 percent. The nine bodies each turned up in it at close to one twelfth of the time, between 8.08 percent for Jupiter and 8.43 percent for Ketu, so no planet favours or avoids the house.

When the house is empty, the reading does not stop. It moves to the fourth lord, the planet that rules your fourth sign, and reads that planet wherever it has landed. That is standard practice, and it is the only route available to half the people asking this question. An empty fourth house often gets read as an absent answer. It is not one.

When something is there, what it contributes depends on which body it is: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu. Those pages read the fourth house for its own significations of home and family as well, since a house carries more than one meaning at a time and the spouse's work is the one being counted here.

Where the fourth lord actually goes

The fourth lord is a single planet and it sits in exactly one house of your chart. Which house it sits in is the part that changes the reading from a sign description into something about your life.

Over the same 175,320 charts, its placement came out close to even, with the low and high ends about forty percent apart:

Dignity is the classical measure of how comfortably a planet sits in the sign it is in. A planet is exalted in the sign where it is held strongest, debilitated in the sign opposite that one, in its own sign where it rules, and Neutral in the remaining eight. Across the sample the fourth lord came out exalted in 7.46 percent of charts, in its own sign in 15.23 percent, debilitated in 9.09 percent, and neutral in the remaining 68.22 percent. So 31.78 percent of charts, close to one in three, have a fourth lord that is either notably strong or notably weak, and the other two in three have one that is neither.

Two placements get asked about more than the rest, and both have a clean answer.

The fourth lord in your seventh house, which happens in 9.00 percent of charts, puts the planet carrying your spouse's work into the house of the spouse itself. Both readings then rest on the same planet, so the work question and the partnership question cannot be answered separately, and that planet's own sign, dignity and period decide both at once.

The fourth lord in your tenth house, 6.94 percent of charts, is the one people hope for, because the house of your own rank is where the planet describing your spouse's work has gone. There is an arithmetic fact about this placement that is worth knowing before you read anything into it.

The fourth and tenth signs are always opposite each other, and checking all twelve rising signs one by one, no planet's exaltation sign or own sign ever lands opposite the sign it rules for this purpose. So a fourth lord in the tenth house is Neutral in dignity for eleven of the twelve rising signs, and Debilitated for the twelfth, which is Gemini rising, where Mercury rules Virgo and falls in Pisces. It is never exalted and never in its own sign, so whatever this placement means, it never comes with a strong planet attached. The sample agrees: of the 12,160 charts in it with the fourth lord in the tenth house, 10,828 had that planet neutral and 1,332 had it debilitated, and none had it exalted or in its own sign.

Which sign, and what each sign looks like as work

The sign your fourth house holds is not evenly distributed, and the reason is geometric rather than mystical. The twelve signs do not take equal time to rise. At New Delhi's latitude, measured across 150,336 chart castings taken every ten minutes on every seventh day from 1985 to 2005, Cancer holds the rising sign for 2.341 hours of an average day while Pisces holds it for 1.420 hours. Since your fourth sign is fixed by your rising sign, that inequality carries straight through.

The right-hand column is AstroMedha's own vocabulary for what a sign looks like when it shows up as a job, and it is the same twelve descriptions the career report prints. It names a shape of work rather than a job title, and the difference matters. "Detail work" covers an auditor, a junior doctor, a quality lead and a compliance head. It does not tell you which of them you are going to marry.

Because the fourth sign decides which planet is the fourth lord, and two planets rule two signs each while the Sun and Moon rule one, the fourth lord is not evenly distributed either. Saturn rules both Capricorn and Aquarius, and both are common fourth signs, so Saturn is the fourth lord in 19.36 percent of charts. The Moon rules only Cancer, and it is the fourth lord in 6.62 percent.

The second reading: your Darakaraka

Vedic astrology has a second, entirely separate way of pointing at the spouse, and it needs no houses at all. It comes from the Jaimini school, named after the classical author, and it works by ranking planets against each other by degree.

Take the seven planets from the Sun through Saturn. For each one, throw away the sign and keep only the degree it had reached inside that sign, a number between 0 and 30. Rank all seven from highest degree to lowest. The highest is your Atmakaraka, the planet standing for the self. The lowest of the seven is your Darakaraka, the planet standing for the spouse and the partnership. Across 80,356 birth moments sampled every six hours from 1960 to 2015, the seven planets take the Darakaraka role at close to even rates, with Jupiter the least frequent:

The Darakaraka was in a neutral sign in 70.02 percent of those moments, in its own sign in 13.80 percent, exalted in 8.39 percent and debilitated in 7.79 percent. It was moving direct in 84.94 percent of them. It was retrograde, which means appearing to move backwards through the zodiac when seen from Earth, in 12.24 percent, and near a standstill in 2.82 percent.

To read work from it, Jaimini practice goes to the navamsa, the ninth-part division of the chart written D9, and takes the sign the Darakaraka occupies there. Then it counts ten signs on from that sign, because the tenth from any starting point is the work position measured from it. That tenth sign is the second answer to the question this page asks.

A distortion in this method that nobody tells you about

Here the measurement turns up something the textbooks do not mention, and it changes how much weight the second answer deserves.

The Darakaraka is by definition the planet with the lowest degree inside its sign. Low degrees are not spread evenly through the navamsa division. Each sign's first navamsa segment, covering its first 3 degrees 20 minutes, maps to a specific sign, and for all twelve signs that first segment lands on one of the four movable signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. A planet chosen for having the lowest degree is therefore heavily biased toward those four.

The sample says exactly that. Across the 80,356 moments, the Darakaraka's navamsa sign was one of those four movable signs 59.88 percent of the time, against the 33.33 percent you would get from an even spread:

So the second answer names Libra, Capricorn, Cancer or Aries for 59.88 percent of all people, and names Gemini for 2.45 percent. If you read this method as though its twelve outcomes were equally likely, you will over-read a Capricorn result and badly under-read a Gemini one. Knowing the base rate is what makes the result usable, and this is the kind of thing that only shows up when you compute a method against a hundred thousand charts instead of quoting the rule.

The third reading: run the same count inside the navamsa

The navamsa is the division Vedic astrology reads for marriage and for the durability of what a chart promises. It has its own rising sign, worked out from the ninth-part position of your ordinary rising sign, and therefore its own twelve houses. Running the same count inside it, the fourth sign from the navamsa rising sign gives a third answer. The D9 navamsa chart covers what the division is for in general.

There is a hard practical limit on this third reading, and it is the most useful single number on this page. The navamsa rising sign moves nine times faster than the ordinary one, changing about every thirteen minutes. Measured over the ten-minute sampling grid at New Delhi, two births twenty minutes apart had a different navamsa fourth sign on 100.00 percent of pairs, and even ten minutes apart they differed on 74.65 percent. Unless your birth time is recorded to within a few minutes and you trust it, the third reading is not telling you about your chart. It is telling you about the rounding on a hospital clock.

How much does your birth time matter? Here are the numbers

All three readings depend on the birth time, and they depend on it to wildly different degrees. Over 150,336 chart castings at New Delhi, taken every ten minutes on every seventh day from 1985 to 2005, here is how often each answer changes when the birth time moves by a given amount:

Read that table as instructions rather than as trivia.

If your birth time is recorded on a certificate and you trust it to the minute, all three readings are available and the third one is worth having. If you know it to the half hour, the first reading is still sound three times in four and the third one is gone. If all you have is "sometime in the morning", the first and third readings are both out of reach, because both need a rising sign, and what remains is the Darakaraka, which changes on only 4.19 percent of hour-apart pairs and can be computed from your date alone with a fair chance of being right.

One caution on that last route. Stable against a small error is not the same as stable against no time at all. Sampling the Darakaraka at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 on each of 20,089 dates, 9,492 of those dates, 47.25 percent, carried more than one Darakaraka across the day. So a date-only reading is right more often than not and wrong close to half the time, and it should be treated as a first pass rather than a conclusion. The rising sign also does not hold for the same length of time in every sign, which means some people's first reading is more fragile than others'. At New Delhi's latitude:

A Pisces rising sign lasts 1.420 hours and a Cancer one lasts 2.341, so a twenty-minute uncertainty is a much bigger fraction of the first than of the second. These figures are for New Delhi. Rise times change with latitude, so a birth in Chennai or in London spreads differently, and the tool computes yours from your own coordinates.

The three readings mostly disagree, and that is the finding

Three methods, three signs. The obvious expectation is that they corroborate each other and that a real reading is the place where they line up. The measurement says otherwise, and it is worth stating precisely because it decides how the answer should be used.

Over all 175,320 charts, comparing the three signs against each other:

The right-hand column is not the flat one-in-twelve. It is worked out from how often each of the three answers actually names each sign in this same sample, so the lopsided Jaimini distribution above is already accounted for.

The first and third comparisons are indistinguishable from unrelated. The second sits a little above. All three landing on one sign happens in about one chart in 111.

There is a matching result on the planet rather than the sign. The fourth lord and the Darakaraka turn out to be the same planet in 14.28 percent of these charts, against 14.22 percent if the two roles were filled independently of each other. The two methods point at the same planet as often as they would if nothing connected them.

So what should you do with three answers that do not agree? Two things, and they are both practical.

First, stop treating agreement as the normal state and disagreement as a problem in your chart. Disagreement is the normal state. The three methods are reading different things: the ordinary chart carries what is promised, the navamsa carries how durably it holds, and the Jaimini count is a separate lens that does not use houses at all. Reading them as three shots at the same target is what produces the confusion.

Second, when they do line up, that is genuinely rare and it means something. A chart where all three name one sign is in the 0.90 percent, and the reading of that chart should say so out loud rather than presenting it as ordinary. One of the six charts below is such a chart, and it reads very differently from the other five.

Six computed charts, all real, all different

Every chart here was computed from the birth moment named. You can reproduce any of them by entering that date, time and place into the free kundli tool and the free chara-karaka tool.

1. The one lagna where the tenth-house placement is weak: 11 April 1988, 09:45 IST, New Delhi

Gemini rising at 0.96 degrees. The fourth sign is Virgo, so the fourth lord is Mercury, and Mercury sits in Pisces at 17.86 degrees in Revati, which is the tenth house from a Gemini rising sign. That is the placement people hope to find, and on this one rising sign out of twelve it lands the planet in its sign of debilitation. The fourth house itself is empty. The Darakaraka is Saturn at 8.86 degrees of Sagittarius, in the seventh house, in the nakshatra Moola, which is one of the twenty-seven segments the Moon passes through in a circuit of the zodiac. Saturn's navamsa sign is Gemini, and ten signs on from Gemini is Pisces. The navamsa rising sign is Libra, whose fourth sign is Capricorn.

Three answers: Virgo, Pisces, Capricorn. Detail work, quiet work, institutional work. Nothing lines up, which as the table above shows is what happens to about three quarters of charts. This person is running a Jupiter major period from 29 November 2018 to 29 November 2034, with a Ketu sub-period from 4 November 2025 to 11 October 2026. Mercury's own major period does not begin until 29 November 2053.

The same chart twenty minutes earlier is a different question

The same date and city at 09:25 rather than 09:45 gives Taurus rising at 26.17 degrees, not Gemini. The fourth sign becomes Leo, the fourth lord becomes the Sun, and the Sun is in the eleventh house in a neutral sign rather than in the tenth in debilitation.

Three things happen at once in that table, and they are the three sensitivities measured earlier. The Darakaraka stays Saturn across all seven times and the Jaimini answer stays Pisces throughout, which is the stable reading. The ordinary reading flips once, between 09:25 and 09:45, and takes the fourth lord's house and dignity with it. The navamsa reading changes at every twenty-minute step and lands on seven different signs inside two hours, which is what a 100 percent change rate at twenty minutes looks like on one real chart.

Two babies in the same Delhi hospital twenty minutes apart do not get the same answer to this question, and no page that does not hold your birth time can give you one.

2. A crowded fourth house with a strong lord: 25 January 1988, 06:20 IST, New Delhi

Sagittarius rising at 25.21 degrees. The fourth sign is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter, and Jupiter is in Pisces at 28.78 degrees, which is both its own sign and the fourth house itself. Three bodies occupy that house: the Moon at 29.70 degrees, Jupiter at 28.78, and Rahu at 2.20. This is the 5.21 percent case, a fourth house with three or more occupants, and it comes with the strongest fourth lord in this set.

The Darakaraka is Saturn at 4.43 degrees of Sagittarius, sitting in the first house. Saturn's navamsa sign is Taurus, and ten on from Taurus is Aquarius. The navamsa rising sign is Scorpio, whose fourth sign is also Aquarius. So two of the three answers agree on Aquarius, systems work, while the ordinary chart says Pisces, quiet work. In the D10 division, which is the tenth-part division read for career and public standing, this person's Darakaraka lands in Capricorn, its own sign.

The current period is a Moon major period from 13 June 2021 to 13 June 2031 with a Saturn sub-period from 12 September 2025 to 14 April 2027. Since Saturn is the Darakaraka here, that sub-period is the window in which this material is live, and it is running now.

3. The one chart in 111 where all three agree: 16 February 1988, 22:05 IST, Chennai

Libra rising at 0.81 degrees. The fourth sign is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, and Saturn is in Sagittarius at 6.53 degrees in the third house. The Moon at 19.69 degrees and Mercury at 22.01 degrees both sit in that Capricorn fourth house, in Shravana.

The Darakaraka is Jupiter at 2.25 degrees of Aries, in the seventh house, in Ashwini. Jupiter's navamsa sign is Aries, and ten on from Aries is Capricorn. The navamsa rising sign is Libra, the same as the ordinary rising sign, and its fourth sign is Capricorn.

All three answers are Capricorn: institutional work, built slowly, with rank and structure in it. This is the 0.90 percent case. Saturn, the planet carrying it, is in its own sign Aquarius in the D10 division. The person is inside a Jupiter major period from 11 November 2015 to 11 November 2031, and Jupiter is the Darakaraka, so the spouse material is live now. Saturn's own major period follows from 11 November 2031 to 11 November 2050.

4. An empty fourth house with the lord out of sight: 3 January 1988, 09:45 IST, Bengaluru

Aquarius rising at 4.70 degrees. The fourth sign is Taurus, ruled by Venus, and Venus is in Capricorn at 21.00 degrees in Shravana, in the twelfth house. Nothing occupies the fourth house. This is the most common shape in the whole sample: empty house, and the entire ordinary reading resting on one planet that has gone somewhere else.

The twelfth house covers expenses, exits and time spent out of sight, so the reading follows Venus there rather than stopping at the empty fourth. Venus in the D10 division falls in Pisces, where it is exalted, which is a different statement about the same planet and worth having beside the first.

The Darakaraka is Saturn at 2.03 degrees of Sagittarius in the eleventh house. Saturn's navamsa sign is Aries, so the Jaimini answer is Capricorn. The navamsa rising sign is Scorpio, giving Aquarius. Three answers again: Taurus, Capricorn, Aquarius. The person is in a Saturn major period from 30 September 2019 to 30 September 2038, with a Venus sub-period from 22 July 2026 to 20 September 2029. Saturn is the Darakaraka and Venus is the fourth lord, so both planets that carry this question are running their periods at the same time between those two dates.

5. An exalted Darakaraka: 29 April 1990, 06:20 IST, New Delhi

Aries rising at 25.01 degrees. The fourth sign is Cancer, ruled by the Moon, and the Moon is in Gemini at 8.79 degrees in Ardra, in the third house. Ketu occupies the fourth house at 18.49 degrees.

The Darakaraka is Venus at 0.56 degrees of Pisces, where Venus is exalted, in the twelfth house. This is the 8.39 percent case for an exalted Darakaraka, and it also shows how low a degree tends to take that role: 0.56 degrees into Pisces was enough to be the lowest of the seven. Venus's navamsa sign is Cancer, so the Jaimini answer is Aries. The navamsa rising sign is Scorpio, giving Aquarius. The ordinary answer is Cancer.

Venus's major period does not begin until 16 June 2064. The Moon's does not begin until 16 June 2090. So on this chart, neither of the two planets that carry the spouse's work will run a major period within a normal working life, and the material will show up through sub-periods and transits instead. That is a common and unglamorous outcome, and a reading that does not say it leaves the reader waiting for a period that is not coming.

6. Two of three, with a Darakaraka in its own sign: 27 March 1990, 09:45 IST, New Delhi

Taurus rising at 15.91 degrees. The fourth sign is Leo, ruled by the Sun, and the Sun is in Pisces at 12.51 degrees in Uttara Bhadrapada, in the eleventh house. The fourth house is empty.

The Darakaraka is Saturn at 0.41 degrees of Capricorn, its own sign, in the ninth house. Saturn's navamsa sign is Capricorn, so the Jaimini answer is Libra, deal work. The navamsa rising sign is Taurus, the same as the ordinary rising sign, and its fourth sign is Leo. So the ordinary chart and the navamsa both say Leo, front-of-house work, and the Jaimini count dissents with Libra. Two out of three, which is the 25.92 percent case.

The person is in a Venus major period from 17 April 2013 to 17 April 2033, with a Saturn sub-period from 15 February 2026 to 17 April 2029. The Sun's major period, which is the fourth lord's, runs 17 April 2033 to 17 April 2039, six years, and it is the shortest of the nine.

When any of this actually shows up

Vedic astrology dates its readings through the Vimshottari dasha, a fixed 120-year sequence in which each of nine planets governs one continuous stretch of a life. The long stretch is the mahadasha, or major period, and within it each planet in turn governs a shorter antardasha, or sub-period. Which planet you start life on, and therefore when each one's turn arrives, is set by the exact degree of your Moon at birth.

Classical practice reads a planet's period as the stretch when the things that planet stands for come to the surface. For this question that makes two periods the ones to look for, the fourth lord's and the Darakaraka's.

Taking 7,305 charts, one birth per day for New Delhi from 1985 to 2005 with the birth hour rotated through all twenty-four hours, and asking what period each of those people is inside as of 26 August 2026:

So a little over a third of that group is inside a period that brings this question forward right now, and close to two thirds are not. That is the honest answer to "why has nothing happened yet", and it is dated per chart rather than general.

The major period of your fourth lord is a poor thing to wait for. Across the same 7,305 charts, the age at which it first arrives runs from birth to 113.7 years, with a median of 44.9. A quarter of people reach it before age 16.3 and a quarter not until after 75.9. 37.59 percent do not reach it until after age 60, and 25.95 percent passed through it before turning 18. The nine major periods run from six years for the Sun to twenty for Venus, so which planet is your fourth lord also decides how long the window lasts when it comes.

What this reading can and cannot tell you

It names a shape of work, such as detail work or care work. The twelve descriptions in the table above are the full vocabulary, and each of them covers a wide range of actual jobs.

It does not name a job title, an employer, an industry, a salary, or a company. No count in this method produces those, and any reading that hands you one has stopped reading your chart and started guessing. The same goes for a name, an initial, or a physical description, which are the other things people ask for in the same breath. This page is about the work question, because that is the one the count above genuinely answers.

It describes a promise in a chart, not a fixed outcome in a life. Which of the twelve shapes is present, how strong the planet carrying it is, and when its period runs are three separate facts, and a chart can hold a clear first answer with a weak planet and a period sixty years out. The 11 April 1988 and 29 April 1990 charts above are both exactly that.
