Where Will I Meet My Spouse? Direction and Distance in Your Chart

Ask a Vedic chart where you will meet the person you marry and it answers with two things: a compass direction measured from the place you were born, and a rough distance from that same place. It does not name a city. It narrows the field to a quarter of the map, and it tells you whether the answer sits close to the ground you came from or a long way off it.

Both halves come out of a single placement. Find the sign your 7th house falls in. Find the planet that rules that sign. Then find where in your own chart that planet actually sits. The sign it sits in gives you the direction. The house it sits in gives you the distance.

Why the 7th lord carries the answer and the 7th house does not

The 7th house is the house of the spouse and of partnership. That much is fixed. But which sign your 7th house falls in is decided entirely by your lagna, the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. Once your lagna is known, your 7th house sign is known, and so is its ruling planet. One person in twelve shares yours.

So the 7th house sign describes the marriage. It can't describe the location, because it has no room to vary once your rising sign is set. What varies is where the ruler of that sign went. Your 7th lord could be sitting in any of the twelve signs and any of the twelve houses of your chart, and that is the part of the picture that belongs to you rather than to a twelfth of the country.

Here is the first half, which you can read off your rising sign alone:

Two rising signs can share a 7th lord and still get completely different answers, because the answer is not the planet's name. It is where that planet went. Leo rising and Cancer rising both hand the marriage to Saturn, and two of the four charts worked through further down are Leo rising with Saturn as the 7th lord. One puts Saturn in Capricorn in the 6th house. The other puts it in Aries in the 9th. Same lord, same rising sign, opposite readings.

The direction: which sign your 7th lord is sitting in

Every sign carries one of the four elements, and in the classical scheme each element is assigned one of the four cardinal directions. Fire faces east, earth faces south, air faces west, water faces north. The element of a sign is not a matter of opinion, so neither is the direction that follows from it.

The direction is measured from your birthplace, not from wherever you happen to live now. A chart is cast for one moment and one set of coordinates, and every angle in it is reckoned from that spot. If you were born in Kolkata and now live in Pune, the compass still points out of Kolkata.

It is also a quadrant and not a bearing. Nobody in the tradition claims a chart resolves to a line on a map, and reading "west" as a three-degree corridor will only produce disappointment. Read it as a quarter of the compass and it does real work. It takes a search that covers everywhere and cuts it to a quarter of everywhere, and it gives you a way to break a tie you are already stuck on. Suppose you were born in Bhopal, you are thirty-three and single, and you are weighing a transfer to Ahmedabad against one to Guwahati. One of those is west and the other is east. The chart has an opinion about that, and looking it up takes two minutes.

The distance: which house your 7th lord fell into

The sign gives the direction. The house gives you how far, and it also gives you the setting the meeting is likely to come out of. These are the canonical meanings AstroMedha's engine carries for the twelve houses, applied to the question of where a partner is met.

The 9th and the 12th are the two distance houses, and the engine's own foreign-settlement module names them the same way: the 12th for residence in a distant land, the 9th for long journeys and learning far from home. The 4th is their opposite, the roots and the ground you stand on. Read those three together and the house layer answers one question cleanly, which is how far from your birthplace the other person's own ground is likely to lie.

The sign type: whether you meet them by moving or by staying

There is a second thing the sign is telling you, separate from its direction. Every sign is movable, fixed or dual. Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are movable. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are fixed. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are dual. AstroMedha's chart data labels them Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable, which map one to one onto the Sanskrit chara, sthira and dvisvabhava.

A movable sign under the 7th lord reads as motion: the meeting involves travel, a shift, a place you go to rather than a place you are. A fixed sign reads as settled ground, the town you are already in or one you have been rooted in for years. A dual sign reads as the middle, and in practice that usually means somewhere you already move between, a second city, a campus, a place you visit often enough that it is half yours.

This looks as though it fights the house layer, and here is why it doesn't. The house answers how far away the other person's own ground sits. The sign type answers whether you get there by moving or by staying put. A 7th lord in the 9th house in a fixed sign is not a contradiction: it says the person's roots are a long way off and they are the one who has already moved. Two different questions, two answers, and they are allowed to point different ways.

When the 9th or 12th really does mean a distant match

Many people arrive at this question having already been told their chart shows foreign travel, and they want to know whether that means a partner from far away. The rule that settles it is straightforward. The distance houses bear on the marriage only when they actually touch the marriage axis. A blazing 9th house that never contacts the 7th house or the 7th lord is telling you about your own travel, your teachers and your fortune. It is not telling you where you will meet anybody.

There are four ways that contact gets made, and every one of them is checkable rather than a matter of taste:

1. Your 7th lord is itself sitting in the 9th or the 12th. This is the most direct form and it needs no interpretation.
2. The lord of your 9th or 12th sits in your 7th house.
3. The lord of your 9th or 12th sits in the same sign as your 7th lord.
4. The lord of your 9th or 12th aspects your 7th house, or aspects the house your 7th lord is sitting in.

If none of the four is present, the distance reading is not part of your marriage picture, and that is a real result rather than a shrug. Of the four charts worked below, one has the direct form, one has a conjunction, one has an aspect and one has nothing at all, which is roughly the spread you should expect.

The second reading, taken from the Moon

There is a parallel calculation that starts from your Moon sign instead of your rising sign. Count the 7th sign from your Moon, take its lord, and run the same two steps. It gives you a second direction and a second distance.

Which one wins is not a preference. AstroMedha's marriage engine counts houses from the lagna whenever a real birth time is known and falls back to the Moon only when it is not, and that is the standard rule rather than a house convention. So if you have your birth time, the rising-sign reading is the one that names the place, and the Moon reading is a cross-check. When the two agree you can hold the reading firmly. When they disagree you have a single-frame reading, and it deserves to be held more loosely.

Across 40,000 engine-computed charts, the two frames land on the same direction 37.2 percent of the time. In 15.7 percent of charts they cannot disagree at all, because the 7th from the lagna and the 7th from the Moon turn out to be ruled by the same planet, and one planet sits in one sign. 17.5 percent of charts put the 7th lord in the 9th or the 12th counting from the rising sign, 16.7 percent do the same counting from the Moon, and only 4.1 percent have both frames saying distant at once. Those 4.1 percent are the charts where a distant match is the strongest reading available.

If you do not know your birth time at all, the Moon reading is the whole reading, and the house layer changes with it. This is not a small caveat. Without a birth time there is no rising sign, so there is no 7th house counted from a rising sign, and AstroMedha's engine will decline to compute an ascendant rather than assert one from a placeholder noon. You still get a direction and a distance. You get them from the Moon, and you should know that is what you are reading.

Where and when are one question

A direction with no date attached is not usable, and the tradition has never treated them separately. The reason is practical. You are not going to spend twelve years leaning west. You want the years when the chart says the marriage axis is switched on, and then you want to know which way to lean during those years.

That timing comes from a cycle of planetary periods called the Vimshottari, which runs 120 years and is what Vedic astrology dates events with. Each major period runs under one planet. That period is called a dasha, meaning the run of years one planet governs, and inside it a sequence of sub-periods, called antardashas, run under the others. Marriage is classically read in the periods of the planets that signify the 7th in your chart: its lord, anything sitting in it, Venus as the significator of marriage in every chart, and the lords of the 2nd and the 11th. AstroMedha's marriage engine scores every period between your 18th and 45th year on exactly those grounds and reports the score out of 100.

Then there is the trigger. Jupiter transiting your 7th house, or the 7th from your Moon, or aspecting either, is the classical transit that lands a marriage when the period already supports it. The engine computes those as real ingress dates and then finds where a high-scoring period and a Jupiter transit actually overlap on the calendar. That overlap is the answer to "when", and it is where the direction becomes worth acting on.

Four charts, worked all the way through

The birth details below are invented, so nothing here belongs to a customer, and they are given in full so you can reproduce every value on the free tool. The charts themselves are computed rather than composed: each one was run on 26 August 2026 through AstroMedha's sidereal engine, on the same build the live site uses.

Chart A: born 11 March 1994, 06:20, New Delhi

Aquarius rising, so the 7th house is Leo and the 7th lord is the Sun. The Sun sits at 26 degrees of Aquarius, in the 1st house, and the engine reads its dignity as neutral.

Aquarius is an air sign, so the direction is west. Aquarius is a fixed sign, so the meeting does not require moving. The 1st house is your own ground, your own body and your own circle. Put together, this chart says the person is already inside the space you occupy, in the place you are from. The compass matters less here than it does in the three charts below, because when the distance layer says "your own ground", everything inside a short radius lies in some direction or other.

The Moon in this chart is also in Aquarius, so the rising-sign frame and the Moon frame are the same frame. Both give west and both give the 1st. That is as firm as this reading gets.

The distance houses are worth checking, because one of them is live. The 9th lord, Venus, sits in the 2nd house and makes no contact with the marriage axis at all. The 12th lord, Saturn, sits in Aquarius alongside the Sun and aspects the 7th house, so the third and fourth contacts from the list above are both present. The distance signifier is real, and it is parked on home ground, which is where a planet gives its results from.

On timing, the engine puts this chart's marriage band at 33 to 37. Saturn's major period with Venus running under it, 16 June 2027 to 16 August 2030, scores 70 out of 100, and Jupiter's transit through Leo overlaps it from 26 June 2027 to 24 July 2028, in two passages rather than one, because Jupiter steps forward into Virgo between 26 November 2027 and 28 February 2028 and then comes back. Saturn with the Sun, 16 August 2030 to 29 July 2031, scores 73, with the Jupiter overlap falling between 17 February and 14 June 2031.

Chart B: born 2 September 1996, 14:45, Bengaluru

Sagittarius rising, so the 7th house is Gemini and the 7th lord is Mercury. Mercury sits at 9.5 degrees of Virgo, in the 10th house, and it is exalted (the sign in which a planet is held to deliver its results most fully).

Virgo is an earth sign, so the direction is south. Virgo is a dual sign, so the reading is the middle distance: somewhere already inside this person's orbit rather than somewhere they would have to uproot for. The 10th house is career and public standing, which puts the meeting through work and through people senior in it.

The Moon frame disagrees here, and the disagreement is worth walking through. The Moon is in Aries, so the 7th from the Moon is Libra, whose lord is Venus, and Venus is in Cancer, the 4th house counting from the Moon. Cancer is a water sign, so that frame says north, and the 4th says home. Because the birth time is known, the rising-sign frame is the one that names the place: south, through work. The Moon frame does not corroborate it, so this is a single-frame reading and should be carried as one.

The distance houses do nothing in this chart. The 9th lord, the Sun, sits in the 9th house in its own sign, which is a strong 9th by any measure, and the 12th lord, Mars, sits in the 8th. Neither aspects the 7th house, neither sits in it, and neither shares a sign with Mercury. So this chart has a genuinely strong 9th house that is not wired to the marriage. That distinction is the whole reason the four contact tests exist.

This chart's marriage band comes out at 32 to 35. Mars with Mercury, 29 April 2029 to 26 April 2030, scores 98 out of 100, and the Jupiter overlap runs 25 August 2029 to 25 January 2030. Mars with Venus, 22 September 2030 to 22 November 2031, scores 91, with Jupiter supporting across the whole of it.

Chart C: born 19 December 1992, 21:05, Kolkata

Leo rising, so the 7th house is Aquarius and the 7th lord is Saturn. Saturn sits at 21.4 degrees of Capricorn, in the 6th house, in its own sign. Venus is sitting with it at 18.9 degrees of the same sign, which matters, because Venus is the significator of marriage in every chart.

Capricorn is an earth sign, so the direction is south. Capricorn is a movable sign, so this meeting involves motion rather than staying put. The 6th house is daily work, service and obligation, which reads as the people the job puts in front of you rather than the people you chose. With the marriage significator sitting in the same sign as the 7th lord, the work reading is doubled rather than diluted.

The Moon is in Libra, so the Moon frame takes the 7th from Libra, which is Aries, and Aries is ruled by Mars, and Mars is in Cancer, the 10th house counting from the Moon. Cancer is water, so that frame says north. The frames disagree on direction again, and the rising-sign frame carries it.

The distance layer is live here through the fourth kind of contact. The 9th lord is Mars, Mars sits in the 12th house, and the engine's aspect map shows Mars aspecting both the 7th house and the 6th house where Saturn sits. So the 9th lord, from inside the 12th, is touching the marriage axis twice. Put that with a movable sign and this chart has a real pull away from the birthplace, which means the south reading should be taken to extend well past commuting range.

This chart is inside a strong window right now. Saturn with Mercury, 16 March 2024 to 24 November 2026, scores 94 out of 100, and Jupiter's transit of Leo overlaps only at the very end of it, from 31 October to 24 November 2026. The next one is Saturn with Venus, 3 January 2028 to 4 March 2031, also scoring 94, with Jupiter supporting from 28 February 2028 onward. The engine's stated band for this chart is 33 to 38.

Chart D: born 27 June 1998, 10:30, Mumbai

Leo rising, so the 7th house is Aquarius and the 7th lord is Saturn, exactly as in Chart C. Ketu sits in the 7th house. Saturn itself sits at 7.8 degrees of Aries, in the 9th house, and the engine reads it as debilitated (the placement in which a planet has the hardest time delivering what it rules).

Aries is a fire sign, so the direction is east. Aries is a movable sign, so travel is part of it. And the 9th house is long journeys and learning far from home, which is the direct form of the distance contact. Nothing here needs interpreting: the lord of the marriage house is sitting in a distance house, and the sign it sits in is a moving one.

The Moon frame cannot disagree in this chart, and that is structural rather than lucky. The Moon is in Cancer, so the 7th from the Moon is Capricorn, and Capricorn and Aquarius are both ruled by Saturn. One planet, one sign, one direction. Both frames say east. The Moon frame places Saturn in the 10th house counting from the Moon, so it adds work to the picture without moving the compass.

The 12th lord in this chart is the Moon, and it sits in the 12th house in its own sign. Both distance houses are lit, and one of them is holding the marriage lord outright. Of these four charts, this is the clearest reading for a partner from a long way off.

Saturn sitting badly here deserves handling plainly rather than skipping. Dignity is the engine's measure of how easily a planet delivers what it rules, and it is read from the sign. Direction is read from the same sign. They are two separate answers taken from one fact, and being debilitated does not move the compass: Aries is east whether Saturn is comfortable there or not. What it says is that this marriage axis asks for more work to hold than a comfortable one would, and the engine's remedy layer is built for exactly that.

Timing runs later here. The band is 30 to 38. Venus with Jupiter, 23 August 2028 to 24 April 2031, scores 63, and the Jupiter overlap covers 23 August 2028 to 23 September 2030. Venus with Saturn, 24 April 2031 to 24 June 2034, scores 68, overlapping 5 March 2032 to 28 March 2034. The highest-scoring window ahead of this chart, Venus with Mercury from 24 June 2034 to 24 April 2037 at 94 out of 100, comes back with no Jupiter transit over the axis inside it. That is the instrument speaking rather than the chart. The engine looks for Jupiter triggers eight years out from the date of the reading, which here runs out in August 2034, two months into that window, so almost none of it was ever examined. Jupiter does reach the axis in 2036. The two earlier and lower-scoring windows are still the ones worth watching, because they are the ones close enough to plan inside.

The four side by side

Two of these are Leo rising with Saturn as the 7th lord, and they still point at different directions and different distances.

Why nobody can write your answer in advance

We ran this calculation over 40,000 charts, generated across birth dates from 1985 to 2005, birth times spanning the full 24 hours, and ten Indian cities, using the same engine that computes a customer's chart.

The four directions come out almost evenly split. North 25.7 percent, South 25.2 percent, West 24.8 percent, East 24.4 percent. There is no common answer here. A page that picked one and stated it would be wrong for three readers out of four.

Narrowing to a single rising sign does not rescue it. Inside each of the twelve rising signs we counted the same four directions, and the highest share any single direction reached inside any one rising sign was 30.7 percent. The lowest was 25.5 percent. So even a page written specifically for your rising sign would be wrong about your direction roughly two times in three. The two highest, Virgo at 30.7 percent and Gemini at 30.4 percent, are the two rising signs whose 7th lord is Jupiter, and Jupiter takes twelve years to cross the zodiac, so a birth window twenty years wide does not cover its signs evenly. That is a feature of the sample rather than a rule you can use.

The distance layer splits 15.0 percent on your own ground, meaning the 7th lord in the 1st or 4th house, 67.5 percent in between, and 17.5 percent distant, meaning the 9th or 12th. Cross the two layers and the largest of the twelve resulting cells covers 17.1 percent of charts. Go one level finer, to the full combination of direction, house and sign type, and 140 distinct combinations turned up out of 144 possible ones, with the most common single combination covering 1.31 percent. A page written for the single most common case would serve one reader in seventy-six.

That is why this question has no general answer, and why every answer to it starts with somebody's date, time and place of birth.

What to actually do with the direction

Use it as a tiebreaker rather than as a search. It earns its keep when you already have a choice in front of you and no strong reason to prefer one side of it: two job offers in two cities, or a decision about whether to widen a match search into a state you had ruled out on habit. In both cases the reading takes two minutes to look up and costs nothing to weigh against the other reasons.

The layer that deserves most of your attention is timing, because it is the one you can act on without rearranging your life. The direction narrows where you look. The dated window tells you which years looking is worth the effort, and the same birth details produce both.

And read the distance layer before you read the compass. When the 7th lord sits in the 1st or the 4th, the honest reading is that the person is close and the direction is nearly moot. When it sits in the 9th or the 12th, the direction starts doing real work, because you are then choosing between quarters of a very large map.
