The 10th Lord in Each House

Two charts can both put the 10th lord in the 7th house and deserve opposite answers.

The 10th lord is not a fixed planet. It is whichever planet rules the tenth sign counted from your lagna, the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. A Cancer ascendant makes Mars the 10th lord, and for a Cancer ascendant the 7th house is Capricorn, where Mars is exalted, meaning as strong as a sign can make it. A Virgo ascendant makes Mercury the 10th lord, and for a Virgo ascendant the 7th house is Pisces, where Mercury is debilitated, meaning as weak as a sign can make it. Same house number, same question, and the strongest possible verdict for one reader and the weakest for the other.

The strong sign is called a planet's exaltation, the sign it does best in; the weak one is its debilitation, which always sits directly opposite that exaltation. Both are fixed per planet and both are in the tables below.

So the question has two coordinates, not one. Which planet rules your 10th house, which your ascendant alone decides. And which house that planet occupies, which needs your birth chart. This page holds all 144 combinations of the two, computed rather than described, so you can find the one cell that is yours and read what it actually contains.

Step one: which planet is your 10th lord

Count ten signs on from your rising sign in the usual zodiac order. That tenth sign is your 10th house, and its ruling planet is your 10th lord. Nothing else about your chart changes this, which is why it is the one part of the reading you can settle from your ascendant alone.

The column naming the lord's other house is the one most readings leave out, and it changes the reading more than the dignity does.

A planet that rules two signs holds two jobs in your chart at once. For an Aries ascendant, Saturn rules Capricorn in the 10th and Aquarius in the 11th, so career and income are governed by the same planet, and the period that lifts one tends to lift the other. For a Cancer ascendant, Mars rules the 5th and the 10th, so creative bets and career answer to one planet with a seven-year period. For a Gemini ascendant, Jupiter rules the 7th and the 10th, so clients, partners and career move on one clock.

Two ascendants are different in kind. Libra takes Cancer as its 10th house and the Moon rules Cancer alone; Scorpio takes Leo and the Sun rules Leo alone. For those two readers the career planet has a single job in the chart and nothing else competes for its attention. The trade is that it also has no second house to draw support from, so its condition in the birth chart carries the whole weight.

Two other ascendants have the opposite arrangement. For Virgo, Mercury rules both the 1st and the 10th. For Pisces, Jupiter rules both the 1st and the 10th. In those charts the planet that describes who you are and the planet that describes what you do are the same planet, and a period that strengthens one strengthens the other by definition.

Step two: how to read one cell

Each of the twelve tables below has the same five columns, and each answers a question the previous one opens.

The second column is the sign your 10th lord occupies once you place it in that house. Whole-sign houses are used throughout, meaning the sign your ascendant falls in is the whole of your 1st house, the next sign the whole of your 2nd, and so on. All longitudes are sidereal, computed against the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the reference frame AstroMedha uses everywhere.

The third column is dignity, the one-word verdict on how well a planet sits in the sign it occupies. Four values appear: exalted, own sign, which is one of the two signs the planet itself rules, neutral, and debilitated. Nothing else in the chart is consulted for this column, which is exactly its limit and the reason the later sections exist.

The fourth column is the dispositor, the planet that rules the sign your 10th lord is sitting in. Your 10th lord is a guest in that sign, and the dispositor is the host. When the host is strong and well placed, a weak guest still gets results; when the host is in trouble, a strong guest is held up.

The fifth column names which houses that host runs in your chart, and it is there because the dispositor's identity means little until you know what it is responsible for. A 10th lord whose dispositor also rules your 11th house of gains routes career results toward income. A 10th lord whose dispositor rules your 6th house of daily work and rivals routes them toward competition and service.

Two facts about the whole grid are worth knowing before you look up your own cell.

Only one ascendant can have an exalted 10th lord sitting in the 10th house itself: Sagittarius, whose 10th house is Virgo and whose 10th lord is Mercury, the one planet whose exaltation sign is also a sign it rules. For the other eleven ascendants the 10th lord in the 10th house is in its own sign, which is strong but one rung below.

No ascendant can have a debilitated 10th lord in the 3rd, the 5th or the 10th house. The arithmetic simply does not produce it. And no ascendant can have an exalted 10th lord in the 4th, the 9th or the 11th. If a reading tells you your 10th lord is debilitated in your 10th house, the reading has made an error, whatever else it says.

The 144 cells

Aries ascendant

Saturn rules your 10th and your 11th, so your career planet and your gains planet are one planet with a nineteen-year period, the second longest of the nine after Venus. Saturn is debilitated in Aries, which is your 1st house, and exalted in Libra, which is your 7th. Your best and worst cells are therefore the two ends of the same axis, six houses apart.

Taurus ascendant

Saturn again, this time ruling your 9th and your 10th. Saturn's moolatrikona stretch, the arc within a sign where a planet performs close to its exalted best, is the first twenty degrees of Aquarius, and Aquarius is your 10th house. A Taurus ascendant is one of six where the 10th lord can sit in its moolatrikona arc inside the 10th house itself. Your exalted cell is the 6th house and your debilitated cell the 12th, which are two of the three houses classical practice treats as difficult, so both of your extreme cells need the rest of the chart read with them.

Gemini ascendant

Jupiter rules your 7th and your 10th, tying partnerships and clients to career. Gemini is the only ascendant whose 10th lord is debilitated in the 8th house. It is also the ascendant whose 10th lord exalts in the 2nd house of income, which is a rare pairing of a strong planet with a money house.

Cancer ascendant

Mars rules your 5th and your 10th, an angle and a trine held by one planet, and Mars carries a seven-year period, tied with Ketu for the shortest after the Sun. Mars is debilitated in Cancer, your own rising sign, so the 1st house is the weakest cell in your column. It is exalted in Capricorn, your 7th.

Leo ascendant

Venus rules your 3rd and your 10th and carries the longest period of the nine at twenty years, one sixth of the whole cycle. Venus is exalted in Pisces, your 8th house, and debilitated in Virgo, your 2nd. Your strongest cell therefore sits in a difficult house and your weakest in an easy one, which is the clearest case on this page of why house and dignity have to be read together rather than one after the other.

Virgo ascendant

Mercury rules your 1st and your 10th, so the planet that describes you and the planet that describes your work are the same. Mercury exalts in Virgo, which is your rising sign, so the 1st house is the strongest cell in your column and it is strong twice over: Virgo is both Mercury's exaltation sign and one of the two signs it owns. The dignity column reports it as exalted because exaltation is checked first and outranks own sign.

Libra ascendant

The Moon rules Cancer and nothing else, so your 10th lord has one job in your chart. The Moon also moves faster than any other body, changing sign roughly every two and a third days, which means two people born in the same week can have it in different houses. It exalts in Taurus, your 8th house, and is debilitated in Scorpio, your 2nd. Its moolatrikona arc runs from four degrees of Taurus to the end of the sign, the widest of the seven.

Scorpio ascendant

The Sun rules Leo and nothing else, so your 10th lord also has a single job. Two things follow that apply to no other ascendant. Your 10th lord can never be combust, meaning burnt by sitting too close to the Sun, because it is the Sun. And it can never be retrograde, meaning it never appears to run backwards against the stars. The Sun carries the shortest period of the nine at six years, and its moolatrikona arc is the first twenty degrees of Leo, which is your 10th house.

Sagittarius ascendant

Mercury rules your 7th and your 10th, and Virgo, your 10th house, is the single sign in the zodiac that is both a planet's exaltation and one of its own signs. Sagittarius is therefore the only ascendant for which the 10th lord in the 10th house reads as exalted rather than as own sign. Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, which is your 4th house.

Capricorn ascendant

Venus rules your 5th and your 10th, and its moolatrikona arc, the first fifteen degrees of Libra, falls inside your 10th house. Venus is exalted in Pisces, your 3rd house, and debilitated in Virgo, your 9th. Capricorn is one of only three ascendants whose debilitated cell falls in a trine, the other two being Aries and Cancer, where it falls in the 1st. Yours is the only one that falls in the 9th, so the dispositor column matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Aquarius ascendant

Mars rules your 3rd and your 10th. Mars exalts in Capricorn, which is your 12th house, and is debilitated in Cancer, your 6th. Aquarius is one of three ascendants, with Taurus and Scorpio, whose exalted and debilitated cells both land in the 6th, 8th or 12th, so neither of your extreme cells can be read off the dignity column on its own.

Pisces ascendant

Jupiter rules your 1st and your 10th, so as with Virgo the self and the work run on one planet. Jupiter's moolatrikona arc, the first ten degrees of Sagittarius, sits inside your 10th house. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, your 5th house, and debilitated in Capricorn, your 11th.

What the grid settles, and what it does not

The dignity column is computed from the sign alone. Four things sitting underneath it can move the verdict in either direction, and none of them can be read off a table.

Degrees inside the sign. A planet in the first ten degrees of Sagittarius is in Jupiter's moolatrikona arc and performs near its exalted best; a planet at twenty-five degrees of the same sign is in its own sign and no more. The arcs are fixed and short, and the dignity column does not use them, so a chart can score neutral or own sign in the table and still be carrying a much stronger placement.

Retrograde motion. Across our sample, 18.1% of 10th lords that are able to go retrograde were retrograde at birth. Which planet rules your 10th changes those odds a great deal. Measured over 30,000 sampled days in the same fifty-year window, Saturn was retrograde on 35.2% of them, Jupiter on 28.6%, Mercury on 16.0%, Mars on 7.7% and Venus on 5.2%. So an Aries or Taurus ascendant, whose 10th lord is Saturn, is more than six times as likely to have a retrograde career planet as a Leo or Capricorn ascendant, whose 10th lord is Venus. The Sun and the Moon never turn back, which is why the 18.1% excludes Libra and Scorpio ascendants.

Combustion. 17.8% of 10th lords other than the Sun sat close enough to the Sun at birth to count as combust. The odds again depend on which planet it is, and here the mechanism is simple. Over the same 30,000 days Mercury never got further than 27.8 degrees from the Sun and Venus never further than 47.1, while the outer planets reached the full 180. The distance that counts as burnt is not the same for every planet: the rule in use here allows 14 degrees for Mercury, 10 for Venus, 17 for Mars, 11 for Jupiter and 15 for Saturn. On those orbs, Mercury was combust on 43.9% of days, Venus on 15.3%, Mars on 15.2%, Saturn on 9.1% and Jupiter on 7.2%. A Virgo or Sagittarius ascendant should therefore check combustion before anything else, and a Scorpio ascendant never needs to, because its 10th lord is the Sun.

Whatever else is in that house or aspecting it. A 10th lord alone in a sign reads differently from the same 10th lord sharing a sign with four other bodies, and the grid cannot see the difference. The third worked example below is exactly that case.

Two charts, same cell, opposite verdicts

Both charts below put the 10th lord in the 1st house. Both are cast for New Delhi from the birth details given, so either can be reproduced.

Chart one: 12 January 2000, 13:16, New Delhi

The ascendant is Aries at 22.96 degrees, in the nakshatra Bharani, which is one of the twenty-seven segments the zodiac is divided into. The 10th house is Capricorn and the 10th lord is Saturn. Saturn sits at 16.43 degrees of Aries in the 1st house, which is the debilitated cell in the Aries column above. It is not combust, sitting 108.9 degrees from the Sun, and it was moving at 0.0002 degrees a day, which is effectively motionless and is classed as stationary, the turning point between direct and retrograde motion.

Read from the grid alone, that is the weakest cell available to an Aries ascendant. Read from the whole chart it is not, and the reason is in the same computation. The rule for cancelling a debilitation asks whether either the lord of the debilitation sign or the planet that exalts in it stands in an angle. Saturn's dispositor here is Mars, which sits in Aquarius in the 11th house and does not qualify. The Sun does: the Sun is the planet exalted in Aries, and counted from this chart's Moon in Pisces it stands in the 10th, which is an angle. So the chart carries a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga on Saturn, the classical cancellation of debilitation, which the tradition reads as a rise built out of early difficulty rather than as a weakness. The same chart also carries a Raja Yoga formed by Jupiter and Saturn as the lords of the 9th and 10th houses.

So what does the reader actually do with that? The timing decides it, and here the timing is unhelpful in a way no grid cell would have shown. Saturn's mahadasha, the long chapter of life that one planet governs, ran from 16 October 2003 to 16 October 2022, which is ages 3.8 to 22.8. The nineteen years belonging to this chart's career planet were spent almost entirely in school and university. The next substantial Saturn window is an antardasha, meaning a sub-chapter inside another planet's mahadasha, running 5 February 2037 to 16 October 2039, ages 37.1 to 39.8, inside a Mercury mahadasha. As of today the chart runs Mercury mahadasha with Venus antardasha, and the career planet is quiet.

Chart two: 20 September 1987, 06:20, New Delhi

The ascendant is Virgo at 4.64 degrees, in Uttara Phalguni. The 10th house is Gemini and the 10th lord is Mercury. Mercury sits at 25.1 degrees of Virgo in the 1st house, which is the exalted cell in the Virgo column, and it is its own dispositor because it rules the sign it is in. It is direct in motion and not combust, sitting 22.2 degrees from the Sun. Mercury is also this chart's ascendant lord, meaning the planet ruling the rising sign, so one exalted planet carries both roles.

That chart carries a Bhadra Yoga, which is the arrangement counted when Mercury sits in an angle from the ascendant in its own or exalted sign, and a Raja Yoga formed by Mercury and Venus.

The two charts share a problem that the dignity columns hide completely. Mercury's mahadasha in this chart ran from birth to 12 February 1990, ages 0 to 2.4, so like the Aries chart above, the career planet's long chapter was spent before there was a career. What is left is the antardasha ladder: 12 February 2013 to 14 December 2015, ages 25.4 to 28.2, inside Venus; 1 December 2020 to 8 October 2021, ages 33.2 to 34.0, inside the Sun; 13 December 2028 to 15 May 2030, ages 41.2 to 42.7, inside the Moon. As of today the chart runs a Moon mahadasha with a Jupiter antardasha.

Same house, opposite dignity, and the practical answer for both readers turns out to sit in the dasha ladder rather than in the cell. That pattern is common enough that we measured it, and the numbers are further down.

When the dispositor overrules the cell

Chart three: 28 March 1997, 12:25, New Delhi

The ascendant is Gemini at 24.24 degrees, in Punarvasu. The 10th house is Pisces and the 10th lord is Jupiter. Jupiter sits at 20.52 degrees of Capricorn in the 8th house, which is the debilitated cell and the worst-looking entry in the entire Gemini column.

Then read the dispositor. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, and Saturn sits in Pisces in the 10th house. Each planet occupies the other's sign, an exchange the tradition calls parivartana, and the dispositor walk closes into a two-member loop rather than running on to a third planet. The standard reading of an exchange is that the two planets share their results, so the debilitated 10th lord in the 8th house is holding a lease on a house that its own tenant is running.

The 10th house of this chart is not empty either. It holds Ketu, Mercury, Saturn, the Sun and Venus, five bodies including Mercury, which is the ascendant lord. Venus is exalted there in Pisces and sits in an angle, which produces a Malavya Yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha arrangements. Mercury with Venus and Mercury with Saturn each form a Raja Yoga from an angle lord meeting a trine lord. Jupiter itself carries a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, and the planet that cancels it is Saturn, sitting in the 10th house, which is an angle from the ascendant. The exchange partner and the cancelling planet are the same body.

The single grid cell for this chart says Gemini, 8th house, debilitated. Everything that actually decides the reading sits outside that cell. Jupiter's own periods are 13 March 2017 to 24 September 2019, ages 20.0 to 22.5, inside Saturn; and 9 October 2031 to 14 January 2034, ages 34.5 to 36.8, inside Mercury. As of today the chart runs Mercury mahadasha with Sun antardasha, and Mercury is one of the five bodies in the 10th house.

What we measured across 100,000 charts

The tables so far are arithmetic and hold for everyone. The numbers below are measurements, and they answer the question a reader asks next: is my cell common or unusual?

Method. 100,000 charts, birth dates drawn uniformly from 1 January 1960 to 31 December 2009, birth times drawn uniformly across the 24-hour clock, all cast at New Delhi at 28.6139 north, 77.2090 east, UTC+5:30, seed 20260826. Sidereal positions on the Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses. A separate 20,000-chart run at a different seed reproduces every headline figure below to within 0.7 points. Three caveats belong with the numbers. Uniform clock time is not how human births are actually distributed. The rising sign depends on latitude, and the Delhi-versus-Chennai table below shows how much. And a fifty-year window does not give the slow planets an even tour of the zodiac, so the per-ascendant dignity rates carry that window inside them.

Where the 10th lord actually lands

The spread from top to bottom is under one percentage point. There is no house the 10th lord prefers, and no house it avoids. The 7th is the thinnest cell at 7.76% and the 3rd the fullest at 8.71%, and both the replication run and a run cast at Chennai agree that the 7th is the thinnest; we have not established a cause for it and are not going to invent one.

The practical consequence is the argument for this page. Because the distribution is nearly flat, your own cell is close to a one-in-twelve draw, and no general statement about "the 10th lord" describes it. Reading the row that is yours is the whole of the exercise.

Which planet is most often the 10th lord

Five planets rule the 10th house for two ascendants each, and the ordering among those five is decided by how often each pair of signs rises at this latitude rather than by anything about the planets. The Sun and the Moon rule the 10th for one ascendant each, Scorpio and Libra, which is why they sit at roughly half the share of the others.

The rising sign is not evenly distributed

Signs take unequal times to rise, and how unequal depends on how far from the equator you are. At Delhi the commonest rising sign is Libra at 9.78% and the rarest is Pisces at 5.90%, a gap of nearly two to one. At Chennai the same twelve signs run from 9.02% down to 7.00%, a much flatter spread. Any statement about how common your 10th lord is has to name a latitude before it means anything, and this is the reason a general population figure for an ascendant is close to useless without one.

How strong the 10th lord usually is

About one chart in twelve carries a debilitated 10th lord and about one in twelve an exalted one, with 14.2% in own sign. Roughly a fifth of all charts, 22.3%, have a 10th lord in either its own sign or its exaltation.

The own sign column separates for three reasons, and the third one is a reporting rule rather than a fact about the sky.

Eight ascendants have a 10th lord with two signs that both count as own sign, and they run between 15.3% and 21.1%, against the one in six the arithmetic predicts. Libra and Scorpio, whose 10th lords rule a single sign each, sit at 8.58% and 8.33%, which is one sign in twelve. Virgo and Sagittarius sit lowest of all at 7.63% and 7.46% even though Mercury rules two signs, because Virgo is both one of Mercury's own signs and its exaltation, and the dignity check reports exaltation first. Add their exaltation columns back and they come to 16.27% and 16.55%, which is the same one in six the other two-sign ascendants show.

The exaltation column varies for a different reason. A fifty-year sampling window does not let Saturn or Jupiter tour all twelve signs evenly, so the Aries and Taurus rows at 5.27% and 5.15% carry the shape of the window as much as the shape of the sky, and should not be read as a permanent rate.

Two arrangements worth their own numbers

A mutual exchange between the 10th lord and its dispositor appears in 6.70% of charts, which is about one in fifteen. That is the arrangement in the third worked example, and it is the commonest reason a debilitated cell reads better than it looks.

The 10th lord conjunct the ascendant lord appears in 9.36% of charts, about one in eleven. When the planet running your career sits in the same sign as the planet running your self, they move together for life, and every period that touches one touches the other. For Virgo and Pisces ascendants the question does not arise, because the two lords are the same planet.

By house type, the 10th lord falls in an angle from the ascendant, meaning the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th, in 33.4% of charts, in a trine, meaning the 1st, 5th or 9th, in 25.1%, and in the 6th, 8th or 12th, which classical practice reads as the difficult trio, in 24.7%. All three figures are within four tenths of a point of what the arithmetic predicts, which is the same conclusion as the house table: position is close to a draw from a hat and has to be looked up rather than assumed.

What the D10 chart adds, honestly

The Dasamsa or D10 is the divisional chart read for career and public standing. It is built by cutting each sign into ten equal three-degree slices and mapping each slice to a sign, so a planet's D10 position depends on its exact degree and is far more sensitive to birth time than its ordinary sign is.

Two population measurements are worth having before anyone treats it as a confirmation machine.

The 10th lord occupies the same sign in D10 as in the birth chart in 10.28% of charts. That reads like a signal until you look at the division rule: every sign has exactly one of its ten slices that maps back to itself, so a uniform spread of degrees produces 10.00% by construction. The measured 10.28% is the arithmetic, not a finding.

The 10th lord falls in an angle from the D10 rising sign in 33.23% of charts. Four houses out of twelve is 33.33%. Again the measurement lands on the arithmetic.

Both numbers say the same thing, and it is a useful thing rather than a discouraging one. The D10 does not systematically agree with the birth chart across a population, so it carries real information in your particular chart: it either seconds what the birth chart says or it disagrees, and which of the two it does for you is a fact about your degrees that no general rule supplies. In the third worked example above, the birth chart calls Jupiter debilitated and the D10 puts the same Jupiter in Pisces in its own sign. In the first example, the birth chart calls Saturn debilitated and the D10 leaves it neutral in Virgo. Two debilitated 10th lords, two different second opinions.

When your 10th lord actually runs

AstroMedha times charts on the vimshottari dasha, the 120-year cycle that divides a life into chapters, each governed by one of nine planets, with the sequence and the starting point fixed by the Moon's exact position at birth. Every planet gets exactly one mahadasha inside those 120 years, and the lengths differ: six years for the Sun, twenty for Venus.

The obvious question is when your 10th lord's own chapter arrives. The measured answer is that it often does not arrive at a useful time.

The timing figures come from a separate 40,000-chart run drawn the same way. A 20,000-chart replication at a different seed reproduces the pooled figures within 0.7 years and every per-ascendant median within 1.5 years, with one exception: the Scorpio median moved by 3.7 years, so treat that row as approximate.

Across the whole sample the 10th-lord mahadasha begins at a median age of 45.7. It begins before 35 for 40.1% of charts, before 60 for 61.6%, and at or after 80 for 22.3%. Slightly more than one reader in five will never see their 10th lord's mahadasha inside a working life, and both worked examples above had theirs before the age of four.

The per-ascendant column separates because the vimshottari sequence is fixed and the planet lengths are not equal. Sagittarius and Virgo, the two ascendants whose 10th lord is Mercury, have a median start age near 56. Gemini and Pisces, whose 10th lord is Jupiter, and Cancer and Aquarius, whose 10th lord is Mars, all sit between 38.0 and 39.1. The gap between those two groups is about eighteen years, and your rising sign alone decides which side of it you are on.

The useful answer is one level down. Every mahadasha contains one antardasha of all nine planets in the same fixed order, so your 10th lord gets a sub-period inside every chapter of your life whether or not it ever gets a chapter of its own. Inside the first sixty years, our sample averages 5.05 separate 10th-lord antardashas, totalling a median of 8.13 years, with a tenth of charts getting 3.06 years or less and a tenth getting 10.41 years or more. The first one typically arrives early: the median age at the first 10th-lord antardasha is 1.9, because the mahadasha running at birth contains one like any other.

So the practical career-timing read is built from the antardasha ladder rather than from the mahadasha, and it needs your Moon's exact degree, which needs your birth time.

Finding your own cell

Three things get you to your row, and none of them needs an account.

2. Read your ascendant off the first table on this page to get your 10th lord.
3. Find your 10th lord's house in your chart, then read that row in your ascendant's table above for its sign, dignity and dispositor.

If your birth time is unknown, stop at step one. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so an hour of uncertainty can move your 10th lord to a neighbouring sign and change its ruler outright, and a 10th-lord reading built on a guessed time is a reading of somebody else's chart. Houses counted from the Moon are the usual fallback in that case, and they answer a different question.

What a full reading adds beyond this page

Everything above is the part that can be tabulated. Four things cannot be, and they are what a birth-data reading is for.

Your 10th lord's exact degree, which decides whether it falls inside its moolatrikona arc, how close to the Sun it is, and whether it was retrograde or turning on your day. The tables give you a category; the degree gives you the strength inside that category.

Your D10 second opinion, which as measured above agrees with your birth chart no more often than chance, so it has to be computed from your own degrees to be worth anything.

Your dated antardasha ladder, which is where career timing actually lives once the mahadasha turns out to have fallen in childhood, as it did in two of the three worked charts here.
