Pradosh Vrat: The Hour and a Half That Belongs to Shiva

Pradosh Vrat is kept on trayodashi and observed in the ninety minutes around sunset. The weekday variants, and why a hard Saturn is the usual reason to begin.

No account, about 20 seconds. We compute your real birth chart and read this page against it: your rising sign, your moon, and the planetary period you are actually living through.

Pradosh Vrat is kept on trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi or lunar day, which comes twice in every lunar month. Unlike most observances it is not really a day-long affair. Everything that matters happens inside a short window around sunset called pradosh kaal, and if you miss the window you have missed the rite.

Why Twilight

Pradosh kaal runs roughly from forty-five minutes before sunset to forty-five minutes after it, an hour and a half in which day is neither over nor still going. Sandhya is the word for a joint of this kind, and Hindu practice treats every one of them, dawn, noon and dusk, as a seam in the day where ordinary rules thin out.

Two stories fix the hour to Shiva. In the first, the gods and demons churn the ocean and a poison rises before any of the treasures do, and Shiva drinks it to save the world, holding it in his throat, which is why he is called Nilakantha, the blue-throated. The gods are said to have recovered from their terror at twilight on a trayodashi, and worshipped him then. In the second, Shiva dances the tandava between the horns of Nandi the bull in that same twilight hour, and every deity gathers to watch. Both stories put him at the seam of the day, and both put relief there, immediately after a crisis.

How It Is Kept

Fast through the day, either without food entirely or on a single light meal without grain. Bathe again in the late afternoon and be ready before the window opens. The rite itself is abhishekam, the bathing of the Shiva lingam, with water first, then milk, curd, honey and ghee where the household does the full form, and bel leaves offered through it. The Shiva Panchakshari, the five-syllable Om Namah Shivaya, and the Maha Mrityunjaya are the mantras of the hour, and the Pradosh Stotra is read where it is known.

The fast is broken after the puja, once the window has closed.

Sunset is the whole timing, and sunset moves. It shifts by city and by season, so the window is a different clock time in Chennai than in Chandigarh and a different one in December than in June. The free panchang gives sunrise and sunset for your own city on any date, which is all you need to set the window yourself.

The Weekday Variants

Pradosh takes its character from the day of the week it lands on, and this is the part practitioners actually care about:

  • Soma Pradosh, on a Monday, the day of the Moon, kept for health, peace of mind and harmony between husband and wife.
  • Bhauma Pradosh, on a Tuesday, the day of Mars, kept for release from debt, from disease and from property disputes.
  • Saumya Pradosh, on a Wednesday, kept for learning and for the fulfilment of a stated wish.
  • Guruvara Pradosh, on a Thursday, kept for the removal of obstacles and for the blessing of teachers and elders.
  • Bhrigu Pradosh, on a Friday, kept for prosperity and for the settling of a household.
  • Shani Pradosh, on a Saturday, the day of Saturn, kept for progeny and for relief from a hard Saturn. The most sought variant of all.
  • Bhanu Pradosh, on a Sunday, kept for longevity, health and standing.

Why Saturn Sends People Here

Saturn is the planet of time, delay, labour and consequence, and it is the one whose difficult phases people feel most concretely: work that will not move, recognition that does not arrive, years in which effort and result come apart. Three of its phases account for most of it. Sade Sati is the seven-and-a-half-year passage of Saturn across the sign holding your Moon and the signs on either side. Dhaiya is the shorter two-and-a-half-year passage. And a Saturn mahadasha, the long planetary chapter, runs nineteen years.

Shiva is the address the tradition gives for all three. The reasoning is inside Saturn's own story: Saturn is the son of the Sun and a deity who accepts correction, and the puranic account has him submitting to Shiva as the one power his gaze cannot touch. So the standard prescription for a hard Saturn is Shiva worship, and the standard occasion for it is Shani Pradosh, when the planet's own weekday and Shiva's own hour fall together.

Is Saturn Actually Your Problem?

Sade Sati is blamed for a great deal that has nothing to do with it. It is also genuinely running for roughly a seventh of everyone alive at any moment, so the guess is right often enough to keep the habit going, and wrong often enough to send people to the wrong remedy.

The check is mechanical rather than a matter of opinion, and it takes two pieces of information: where your Moon sits, and where Saturn is now. The free Sade Sati tool does it from your birth details and tells you which phase you are in, or that you are in none. The free dasha tool shows which planetary period you are actually running, which is the other half of the answer.

Doing that first is worth more than any fast. A remedy aimed at the wrong planet is effort spent in the wrong direction, and Pradosh Vrat is specific enough to deserve being aimed properly.

What the Evening Asks of You

Find your sunset. Be washed, fed nothing since morning, and in front of a lingam or a lamp in the three quarters of an hour before it. Pour water. Offer bel. Say Om Namah Shivaya until the window closes, and break the fast afterwards without ceremony.

The observance is short by design. Whatever is heavy is being handed over at the hour the day itself hands over.

Common questions

What is Pradosh Vrat?
A fast for Shiva kept on trayodashi, the thirteenth lunar day, which comes twice a lunar month. The puja is done in pradosh kaal, roughly forty-five minutes either side of sunset, and the fast is broken after that window closes.
What is the timing of pradosh kaal?
Roughly forty-five minutes before sunset to forty-five minutes after. Because sunset shifts by city and by season, the clock time is different everywhere. Our free panchang gives sunrise and sunset for your own city on any date.
What is Shani Pradosh?
A Pradosh Vrat falling on a Saturday, Saturn's own weekday. It is the most sought variant, kept for progeny and for relief from a hard Saturn phase, because Saturn's day and Shiva's hour coincide.
Why is Shiva worshipped for Saturn problems?
Saturn's own story places him in submission to Shiva as the one power his gaze cannot touch. So Shiva worship is the standard prescription for Sade Sati, the seven-and-a-half-year passage of Saturn across the sign holding your Moon and the signs on either side, for the shorter Dhaiya, and for a Saturn planetary period. Shani Pradosh is the standard occasion to begin it.
What do you eat on Pradosh Vrat?
Either nothing through the day or a single light meal without grain. The fast is broken after the sunset puja is complete. Households keep it at different depths and the lighter keeping is accepted.
How do I know if I am actually in Sade Sati?
Sade Sati, the seven-and-a-half-year passage of Saturn across the sign holding your Moon and the signs on either side, depends only on where your Moon sits and where Saturn is now, so it is a mechanical check rather than a matter of opinion. Our free Sade Sati tool gives the answer from your birth details, including whether you are in none of the phases.
