Maha Shivratri falls on 15 February 2026, on the Krishna Chaturdashi, the fourteenth tithi of the waning fortnight just before the new moon, which we confirmed against the panchang. It is the great night of Shiva, kept with fasting by day and a vigil through the night.

Why the Night Matters

Most festivals are celebrated by day. Shivratri is a night festival, and that is the point. The waning Moon has emptied the sky of light, and the tradition reads this dark, still night as the time when the upward pull toward Shiva, the principle of pure consciousness and dissolution, is strongest. Staying awake is not a test of endurance. It is a way of keeping the mind alert and turned toward stillness while the body rests in fasting.

The Four Prahar Puja

The night is divided into four prahars, four watches, and Shiva is bathed in each. The substances carry meaning. Water cleanses, milk brings purity and nourishment, curd and honey bring abundance and sweetness, and ghee brings the light of victory. Bel leaves, which Shiva is said to love above all offerings, are placed through the night, their three lobes read as the three eyes, the three gunas, the trident. The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra and the chant of Om Namah Shivaya are kept through the watches, the Shiva lingam the still centre of it all as abhishekam is poured.

What Shivratri Offers a Hard Chart

Shiva is the deity of dissolution, the one who absorbs and transmutes, and his night is widely turned to by those carrying heavy planetary weather. A difficult Saturn, including Sade Sati and the Dhaiya, is traditionally eased through Shiva worship, and the Maha Mrityunjaya is the great mantra for health, longevity and protection when the chart looks threatened. Rahu and Ketu, the shadow planets that unsettle the mind, are also held to be steadied by this night. If you are in a heavy period, Shivratri is the night the tradition points you toward.

The Planets This Night Is For

Shivratri is the night the tradition hands to the people having the hardest year, and that is not a sentiment. It is a claim about three specific planets. Saturn brings delay, weight, and the slow removal of whatever was never load bearing. Rahu brings craving, confusion, and a hunger that does not settle when it is fed. Ketu brings the opposite, a detachment that arrives either as clarity or as the floor giving way. All three are said to answer to Shiva, because Shiva is the principle of dissolution, the one who takes a thing apart rather than negotiating with it.

That is also why the remedy for a heavy chart is a night rather than a ceremony. Saturn, Rahu and Ketu do not respond to being placated quickly. They respond to endurance, to sitting through something without shortening it, which is the exact shape of a fast and a vigil.

Where This Night Lands in Your Own Chart

Saturn's weight reaches a life through two doors, and it helps to know which one is open. The first is Sade Sati, the seven and a half years in which Saturn transits the sign holding your Moon and the two signs on either side of it. The second is Saturn's own long period. Vedic timing divides a life into planetary periods, a scheme called the Vimshottari, which hands each stretch of years to one ruling planet, and Saturn's stretch runs nineteen years. The two are different experiences. Sade Sati presses on the mind and the home. A Saturn period reorganises the work and the standing.

Rahu and Ketu arrive differently again. Their heaviest form is Kaal Sarp, the pattern in which every other planet in the chart falls on one side of the axis between them, read as a life where effort keeps meeting an obstruction it did not cause. Their far more common form is simply Rahu or Ketu sitting on an important house, which shows as one department of life that never quite behaves while the rest of the chart works.

You can check the first from the Sade Sati calculator and the second from the Kaal Sarp check, both from a birth date, time and place. Knowing which of the three planets is actually pressing tells you which mantra to keep through the night, and that is a real difference rather than a detail.

Which Mantra for Which Weight

The night carries three chants and they are not interchangeable. Om Namah Shivaya is the general one, kept through all four watches by anyone. The Maha Mrityunjaya is the specific mantra for health, longevity and protection, and it is the one the tradition names when the chart itself looks threatened, which in practice means a difficult eighth house, a Saturn period arriving over an illness, or a family history you are watching for in yourself. The Rudra Abhishekam, the pouring over the lingam through the four prahars, is aimed at Saturn and at the two shadow planets, because it works as an act of patience rather than as a request.

So the choice is simple once you know which door is open. In Sade Sati, keep the abhishekam and offer black sesame. Where health is the worry, keep the Maha Mrityunjaya and count it rather than letting it drift. Where the mind is the worry, which is the Rahu complaint, keep Om Namah Shivaya and keep it slowly.

What the Night Genuinely Supports

Shivratri supports beginning anything that requires giving something up: a fast, an addiction ended, a practice restarted, a course of treatment, a repayment schedule, a separation you have been putting off. It is a night for subtraction, and the tradition is consistent about that.

It is not an auspicious night for the additive things. Weddings, purchases, launches and housewarmings are not kept on Shivratri, and no panchang recommends them. Those belong to the bright fortnight, at an hour chosen from the chart of the person acting.

What the Night Asks of You

You do not need an elaborate setup. Keep a simple fast, stay up as long as you genuinely can, offer water and bel leaves to Shiva, and chant. The Maha Mrityunjaya is the mantra of this night above all. Treat the vigil as a clearing, a night to let the noise settle and the deeper quiet come forward. Whatever you sincerely turn toward on Shivratri night is said to take root with unusual force. There is no minimum and no grandeur required, a single bel leaf offered with attention is held to please Shiva more than wealth offered without it.

Common questions

When is Maha Shivratri in 2026?
Maha Shivratri falls on 15 February 2026, on the Krishna Chaturdashi tithi just before the new moon.
Why is Maha Shivratri observed at night?
The dark, waning night is held to be when the pull toward Shiva, pure consciousness and dissolution, is strongest. The all-night vigil keeps the mind alert and turned toward stillness.
What is the four prahar puja on Shivratri?
The night is divided into four watches, and Shiva is bathed in each, with water, milk, curd and honey, and ghee, with bel leaves offered throughout, while the Maha Mrityunjaya and Om Namah Shivaya are chanted.
Is Maha Shivratri good for planetary remedies?
Yes. Shiva worship and the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra are traditionally turned to for a difficult Saturn, including Sade Sati, and to steady Rahu and Ketu, making the night a strong time to begin such remedies.
Which planets does Maha Shivratri help?
Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Saturn brings delay and weight, Rahu brings craving and confusion, Ketu brings sudden detachment. All three are said to answer to Shiva, which is why the night is the one the tradition offers to people carrying a hard chart rather than merely a hard day.
Which Shivratri mantra should I keep?
It depends on what is pressing. Om Namah Shivaya is the general chant for all four watches. The Maha Mrityunjaya is the specific one for health, longevity and protection. The Rudra Abhishekam, poured through the four prahars, is aimed at Saturn and at Rahu and Ketu, because it works by patience rather than by request.
Is Maha Shivratri a good night to start a new venture?
No, and the tradition does not claim it is. Shivratri supports subtraction: a fast, an addiction ended, a treatment begun, a practice restarted. Weddings, purchases, launches and housewarmings are kept in the bright fortnight instead, at an hour chosen from the chart of the person acting.
