My Vehicle Number and My Chart

The dealer has offered you a choice of registration numbers and wants an answer today. Two things decide it, and you already have one of them. The first is what the number you are being offered reduces to, which is a minute of arithmetic. The second is what your own birth date reduces to, which is another minute. Whether the two agree is the whole question, and for about one person in nine the answer is that no digit agrees with both halves of their own date, which is a situation the published lists do not mention because they never check it.

The other half of this decision is not about the number at all. It is the day the vehicle is handed over, and that half is where the reader's birth chart does real work rather than decorative work.

Your two numbers, before you look at any plate

Two numbers come out of a date of birth, and they answer different questions.

Your mulank is the day of the month you were born, added down to a single digit. Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5. Born on the 8th: it is already one digit, so 8. Born on the 19th: 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.

Plain words. Dasha means the sequence of planetary chapters a life is divided into. Yoga means a named combination of planets the tradition reads as a unit. Karana means half a lunar day. Tara means the count from your birth star to the star the Moon is in today. Choghadiya means the division of daylight into favourable and unfavourable slots. Rahu kaal means the unfavourable slot every weekday carries. Yamaganda means a second unfavourable slot in the same day. Chandra bala means the Moon's strength counted from the sign your Moon held at birth. Vishti means the unfavourable half-day the tradition asks you to avoid. Mulank means the day of the month you were born, added down to one digit. Bhagyank means the whole birth date added down to one digit. Destiny number means the whole birth date added down to one digit. Shukla means the bright fortnight, when the Moon is waxing. Lo shu means the three by three grid the birth digits are placed into.

Your bhagyank uses every digit of the whole date, added together in one go. Take 14 June 1992. The day gives 1 + 4 = 5. The month gives 6. The year gives 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21. Add those three: 5 + 6 + 21 = 32, and 3 + 2 = 5. So mulank 5, bhagyank 5. Add the year's digits before you add the year to anything else. Reducing the year to a single digit first is a different sum and it lands on a different answer often enough to matter.

One rule changes the answer for some dates and it will come back later in this page, so carry it now. When a total reduces to 11, 22 or 33, the reduction stops there. Those three are master numbers and they are kept as themselves rather than collapsed to 2, 4 and 6. The 29th of the month is the only day this affects on the mulank side: 2 + 9 = 11, and it stops. Everyone born on the 29th has mulank 11.

Each number has a ruling planet, and the ruler is what carries the meaning from the number into the rest of the reading.

The master numbers take the ruler of their root: 11 reads through 2 and takes the Moon, 22 reads through 4 and takes Rahu, 33 reads through 6 and takes Venus. They keep their own label for meaning and borrow the root for every compatibility question. That is the engine's own rule, and it is the reason a master number is not a dead end when you get to the table further down.

What a registration number actually reduces to

An Indian registration number has four parts, and only one of them is yours to choose. DL 8C AF 5031 is a state code, a district code, a running letter series, and the four-digit number at the end. The state, the district and the letter series are assigned to you by which office you register at and which series that office happens to be on. The four digits are the part the RTO offers you a choice of, and the part a fancy-number auction is an auction for.

So reduce the four digits. For 5031: 5 + 0 + 3 + 1 = 9. That plate is a 9, and the planet in it is Mars.

Three worked examples on the same plate prefix, so you can see what moves and what does not:

You will meet a second way of doing this, and it is worth settling rather than leaving open. Some practitioners reduce every character on the plate, converting each letter to a Chaldean value first, so DL8CAF5031 becomes 4 + 3 + 8 + 3 + 1 + 8 + 5 + 0 + 3 + 1 = 36, which reduces to 9. That method gives 8 for the plate's digits alone and 9 once the letters are added, and on the eight sample plates we ran it disagreed with the four-digit reading on every one.

Which to use follows from what you are choosing. The letters are the RTO's series marker. They roll to the next combination when the current one is exhausted, on a schedule that has nothing to do with you, the vehicle, or the day you walk in. If your answer moves when the office's letter series rolls, the answer was never about you. Reduce the four digits you picked.

For anyone who has already been given a letters-included verdict and wants to know why it differs, the arithmetic is exact rather than mysterious. Adding a number to a total leaves the reduced digit unchanged only when what you add is a multiple of nine. We tested every possible letter total from 0 to 60 against all 9,999 four-digit series. Every letter total that is not a multiple of nine changes the answer for 100% of series. Even the multiples of nine do not fully agree, because the master-number stop interferes: a letter total of 9 agrees on 75.5% of series, 18 agrees on 81.8%, 27 on 87.1%, and 36 or above on 88.0%. There is exactly one letter total that never changes the answer, and it is zero.

Which digits are friendly to your number

The engine holds a compatible set for each of the nine numbers. It is the same table the name-harmony scoring runs on, where a name number that sits in both the mulank's set and the bhagyank's set scores 90 out of 100, one out of two scores 65, and neither scores 40. Applied to a registration number, the ladder reads the same way: a digit in both sets is a full match, a digit in one is a partial, and a digit in neither is the bottom rung.

Rows are your number. A tick means that digit sits in its compatible set.

Number 7 has the narrowest set in the table, three digits out of nine. Number 9 has the widest, six. That difference is not a judgement about the person, it is a property of the table, and it shows up again in the next section as a real constraint on what the counter can offer you.

There is a second layer, and it answers a different question rather than the same question twice. The chart engine holds a natural friendship table between planets, the one the dasha and pinnacle readings use. Since every number has a ruling planet, you can ask whether the plate's ruler and your ruler are friends in that table. Running both layers over all 81 combinations, they agree on 56 and disagree on 25.

• 23 combinations are strong on both layers. The digit is in your compatible set and the two rulers are natural friends or the same planet.
• 33 are a clear no on both. Neither layer supports it.
• 17 pass on the number layer and not the planet layer. Mulank 3 with a 5, for instance: 5 is in Jupiter's compatible set, but Jupiter counts Mercury an enemy.
• 8 pass on the planet layer and not the number layer. Mulank 1 with a 5: the Sun and Mercury are friends, but 5 is not in the Sun's compatible set.

Two limits on the planet layer, stated plainly because they decide when to ignore it. Rahu and Ketu carry no friends and no enemies at all in the engine's planet table, so every cell in the mulank 4 and mulank 7 rows comes back neutral and the layer tells those readers nothing. And the friendship check counts a pair as friendly if either side counts the other a friend, which makes the Moon and Mercury read as friends even though Mercury's own list has the Moon as an enemy. The compatible set is the operative answer for a number question. Treat the planet layer as a second opinion that raises a strong match to a very strong one, and never as a reason to overturn the table above.

When your own two numbers disagree about the same digit

The point of having a mulank and a bhagyank is that a digit ideally satisfies both. That is the 90 out of 100 rung. It is also not always available.

We ran the intersection of the two compatible sets for every one of the 36,525 days from 1 January 1926 to 31 December 2025.

So 3,876 days out of 36,525 produce a person for whom no digit from 1 to 9 satisfies both their numbers. This is not a rare accident, it is built into the table, and fifteen mulank and bhagyank pairs can never intersect no matter what year you were born:

Seven of those fifteen involve a master number, which is the rule from earlier doing its work: 11 borrows the set of 2 and 22 borrows the set of 4, so a master number inherits its root's disagreements along with its root's set. Between them the eight plain pairs account for 2,589 of the 3,876 days and the seven master-number pairs for the other 1,287.

Someone born on 2 January 1985 is one of them: mulank 2 with the set {1, 2, 7, 9}, bhagyank 8 with the set {4, 5, 6, 8}, and nothing in common.

What that person should do is the part the lists skip, so here it is. There is no 90 available and pretending otherwise is the error. Take a 65, which means a digit that satisfies one of your two numbers rather than neither, and take it on the mulank side. The mulank comes from the day of the month and is the number that repeats through your life on dates, on the days of the month you sign things and take delivery of things. The bhagyank comes from a date that occurs once. Between two partial matches, the one attached to a recurring date is the one you will keep meeting.

The single most common outcome across the century is an intersection of exactly two digits, {5, 6}, which 5,280 birth dates produce. Across all 36,525 days only 23 distinct intersection sets occur at all. The space of answers here is small, which is why a generic list can look convincing and still be wrong for you.

What the counter can actually offer you

Knowing your friendly digits is only useful if the numbers exist to be had. A four-digit series runs 0001 to 9999, which is 9,999 numbers, and they do not spread evenly across the nine digits.

The three rows at the bottom are where 2, 4 and 6 lost their share. A series whose digits total 11 or 22 or 33 stops there rather than reducing further, so 468 of the 9,999 are elevens rather than twos, 540 are twenty-twos rather than fours, and 20 are thirty-threes rather than sixes. Only twenty numbers in a full series are 33s, and they are the four-digit numbers whose digits add to 33: 6999, 9699, 9969, 9996, 7998 and its rearrangements, 8889 and its rearrangements, and so on.

Which leaves the practical figure. Out of a whole 9,999-number series, this is how much of it is friendly to you:

Two things follow. If your number is 9, better than three numbers in five are friendly to you and you can afford to be fussy. If your number is 7, fewer than three in ten are, and holding out for a specific favourite while a friendly number sits in front of you is a bad trade.

Read those percentages with the master-number rule in hand. The 540 twenty-twos in a series read as 22 for meaning and as 4 for compatibility, because a master number takes its root's compatible set. Count them in and mulank 4 goes from 38.8% to 44.4%, mulank 6 from 50.0% to 55.6%, mulank 7 from 28.7% to 33.3%. Whether you count them is a decision about how literally you take the master-number stop, and it moves the answer by around five percentage points either way, which is small enough that it should not be what you agonise over at the counter.

The half that is not about the number

Everything above concerns a number. None of it says anything about when the vehicle is handed to you, and the timing rules are a separate system with its own inputs. The muhurta engine scores a day for vehicle purchase on what the sky is actually doing: the nakshatra (the lunar mansion the Moon is passing through that day), the tithi (the lunar day), the weekday, whether the Moon is waxing or waning, the yoga, and whether the Vishti karana is present. Your mulank is not one of its inputs. The two halves of this decision genuinely are two halves.

The rules the engine applies for this event, in its own words: a vehicle is for motion, so movable and quick nakshatras suit it, on a benefic day. Friday, ruled by Venus, and Wednesday, ruled by Mercury, are the classic days for buying a vehicle.

• Favoured nakshatras: Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Revati, Rohini, Mrigashira.
• Avoided nakshatras: Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Moola, Jyeshtha.
• Favoured weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
• Avoided weekdays: Tuesday and Saturday.
• Favoured tithis: the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th of the waxing half, with the waxing half itself preferred over the waning.

We ran that scorer over the 120 days from 26 August 2026 for Delhi, with times on the Asia/Kolkata clock at UTC+5:30. The window holds 24 excellent days, 26 good, 32 fair and 38 to avoid.

The five worst days in the same window, for anyone whose dealer is pushing a date: 3 November 2026 and 1 December 2026, both Tuesdays in Magha, scoring 7 and 9; 19 September 2026, a Saturday in Moola, scoring 11; 24 November 2026, a Tuesday in Krittika, scoring 13; and 3 October 2026, a Saturday in Ardra, scoring 15.

The weekday rule shows up in the results rather than only in the rulebook. The window contains 17 Tuesdays and not one of them reached excellent. The 24 excellent days fall on Monday 7 times, Wednesday 6, Thursday 5, Friday 3, Sunday twice and Saturday once. If you take nothing else from this section, taking delivery on a Tuesday or a Saturday is the single easiest thing to avoid, and it costs you nothing to move.

A day is not a time. On 26 August 2026 in Delhi the clear auspicious windows are 05:58 to 07:34 and 17:10 to 18:46, both Labh Choghadiya, with a neutral Char window at 15:34 to 17:10. The periods to stay out of that day are Rahu Kaal from 12:22 to 13:58, Yamaganda from 07:34 to 09:10, and Gulika Kaal from 10:46 to 12:22, which is most of the working morning and the start of the afternoon. Those windows are computed from that day's real sunrise and sunset at that location, so they move with the date and the city. The choghadiya tool and the panchang tool return them for any day, and the muhurat finder returns the ranked days for vehicle purchase without asking for a sign-up. Why that calendar is not your calendar

Everything in the section above is the sky, and the sky is the same for everyone in Delhi that day. Two personal factors change it, and both need a birth chart.

Tara Bala counts from your birth star to the star the Moon is in on the day in question, and lands on one of nine positions. Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra and Ati-Mitra are favourable. Vipat, Pratyari and Vadha are to be avoided. Janma, your own birth star, is mixed. Chandra Bala counts the sign the Moon is transiting from the sign your Moon was in at birth. The 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are strong; the 4th and 12th are weak; and the 8th is Chandrashtama, the strongest single avoid in the personal layer.

To find out how much those two actually move a calendar, we ran every possible chart. There are 27 birth stars and 12 natal Moon signs, so 324 combinations, and we scored all 120 days for each of them. That is 38,880 day-by-chart cells, exhaustive rather than sampled.

46.4% of those cells changed grade once the chart was applied. Not the score, the grade.

The rest of the census:

• Every single one of the 324 charts loses days. The number of days the chart-free calendar calls good or excellent and the chart calls fair or worse runs from 3 to 16, averaging 9.1 out of 120. There is no chart for which the public calendar is safe as printed.
• Every chart also gains days, and gains more than it loses: 7 to 20 days that the chart-free calendar wrote off as fair or avoid come back as good or excellent, averaging 13.3.
• Chandrashtama alone accounts for 8 to 12 days in the window for every chart, which is one day in every ten to fifteen that a generic list will happily recommend to you.
• The top day is shared by fewer than half. 26 August 2026, the strongest day on the public calendar, is also the top day for 47.2% of charts. For the rest it is not, and for some charts it ranks 43rd out of 120.
• The count of excellent days is not 24 for you. It runs from 24 to 38 depending on the chart, averaging 30.3. The chart-free calendar is the floor, never the ceiling.
• Only 8 of the 120 days ever become anyone's best day. The personal layer does not scatter the answer across the calendar, it concentrates it. Which of those eight is yours is the thing the birth data decides.

That last pair of findings is what a birth-data gate is for. A generic list is not wrong so much as incomplete in a way you cannot detect from inside it: it under-counts your good days by up to fourteen in four months, and it silently includes several days your own chart rules out. One person, from the plate to the delivery slot

Take someone born on 14 June 1992 at 07:20 in Delhi, buying a car this autumn.

The number half. Mulank 5 and bhagyank 5, both ruled by Mercury. Because the two numbers coincide, the intersection is the whole set, {3, 5, 6, 7, 9}, which is 5,535 of the 9,999 numbers in any series and about as easy a search as this gets. Of the sample plates above, DL8CAF0329 and DL8CAF1112 both reduce to 5, which is Mercury meeting Mercury, the strongest cell in the table for this person. DL8CAF5031 and DL8CAF9999 both reduce to 9, which is Mars, and 9 is in Mercury's compatible set even though the planet layer has Mercury and Mars as enemies, so that is a partial rather than a full match. DL8CAF4004 reduces to 8, Saturn, which is in neither this person's set nor Mercury's friend list, and is the one to decline.

The timing half. The engine computes this birth as Anuradha birth star with the natal Moon in Scorpio. Against the same 120 days:

Over the whole window this chart ends up with 27 excellent days against the city's 24, and 33 good against 26. Seven days the city calls good or better drop to fair or worse, and seventeen days the city calls fair or avoid come back up. 26 November 2026 is the one that matters most: it looks like one of the best Thursdays of the season on any published list, and for this person it is a day to leave alone.

Putting the two halves together. The strongest single arrangement here is a plate reducing to 5 or 6, taken on 11 November or 16 November 2026, in the morning Labh window. Notice that the number half and the timing half point at the same planet without being made to: Mercury rules 5, Wednesday is Mercury's day, Wednesday is one of the two days the chart shows as classic for this purchase, and 11 November is a Wednesday. That convergence is not a rule the engine enforces, since the muhurta scorer never sees the mulank. It is worth taking when it appears and not worth manufacturing when it does not.

If the number is already yours

Most people arrive at this question after the fact, with a vehicle already registered and a number they did not choose. The number is fixed. Three things are not.

The registration date is often still open. If the vehicle is bought and delivery is being scheduled, that date is the live decision and it carries more weight in the muhurta rules than the plate does, because the plate is not an input to them at all.

A second vehicle is a fresh choice. The percentages above are how much of a series is friendly to you, and they are as true for the next purchase as for this one.

A number in neither set is not a verdict on the vehicle. The bottom rung of the engine's own ladder is 40 out of 100, not zero, and it describes a number that does not reinforce your two numbers rather than one that works against you. If you have an 8 plate and your set is {1, 2, 3, 9}, what you have is a plate that adds nothing. Taking the delivery or the registration on a day your chart rates well is a larger correction than the plate is a problem.
