My pratyantar ladder

A pratyantar is the third level of the vimshottari dasha, the 120-year cycle of planetary periods that Vedic practice uses to put dates on a life. The top level is the mahadasha, a chapter of 6 to 20 years ruled by one of nine planets. Inside every mahadasha run nine antardashas, sub-periods carrying those same nine planets in a fixed order. Inside every antardasha run nine pratyantars, and a pratyantar is short: a few weeks at one end, a few months at the other. You are inside all three at once, always, and the third is the only one brief enough to plan a quarter around.

A page like this can be written for you and not for everyone at once because the ladder is not a calendar. It has no shared dates. Two people can be in the same mahadasha with the same antardasha lord and sit years apart on the clock. Every date in the ladder is derived from one number, and that number is the sidereal longitude of the Moon at the minute you were born.

The one number the whole ladder hangs on

Sidereal longitude means the Moon's position measured against the fixed stars, which is the frame Vedic astrology works in, and AstroMedha computes it with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard offset Indian practice uses to convert a sky position into that frame. The result is a single figure between 0 and 360 degrees.

Divide the sidereal zodiac into 27 equal segments of 13 degrees 20 minutes each and you have the nakshatras, the lunar mansions a Vedic chart is read against. Your Moon falls in exactly one of them, and that one is your birth star. Each nakshatra is permanently assigned a ruling planet, and the assignment repeats in the same order three times around the circle: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury.

That assignment does two jobs at once. The lord of your Moon's nakshatra is the lord of the mahadasha you were born into. And how far the Moon had already travelled through that segment says how much of that mahadasha was used up before you drew a breath. If your Moon sat one quarter of the way through a segment ruled by Venus, whose mahadasha runs 20 years, then 15 years of Venus were still unspent at birth, and your Venus chapter ends on your fifteenth birthday rather than your twentieth. Everything after that follows in the fixed order with fixed lengths, so the entire 120-year ladder is settled the moment that one number is known.

The nine mahadasha lengths, in the order they always run, are Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. They total 120.

The two lower levels are pure proportion. An antardasha takes the same share of its mahadasha that its lord's own mahadasha takes of 120 years. Saturn is 19 of 120, so a Saturn antardasha is 19/120 of whatever mahadasha it sits inside. A pratyantar takes that same share of its antardasha. Each level opens with its parent's own lord, so a Rahu mahadasha opens with a Rahu antardasha, and a Rahu-Saturn antardasha opens with a Saturn pratyantar.

That is the whole mechanism. None of it is a matter of opinion, which is why the dates it produces are worth arguing about only if the birth time is wrong.

A ladder, fully dated

Below is a real ladder computed on the AstroMedha ephemeris for one specific birth, so that every claim on this page can be checked rather than taken. The birth details are an example, not a person: 17 March 1994, 06:40 IST, Pune, at 18.5204 degrees north and 73.8567 degrees east.

What the chart gives before any dasha work starts. The Moon sits at 24.2395 degrees of sidereal longitude, which places it at 24 degrees 14 minutes of Aries. That falls inside Bharani, the second nakshatra, in its fourth quarter. Bharani's ruling planet is Venus. The ascendant, meaning the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at that minute, is at 0.80 degrees of Pisces, and that is what fixes the houses.

The balance at birth. The Moon had travelled 81.80 percent of the way through Bharani, leaving 18.20 percent of it unspent. Venus rules a 20-year mahadasha, so 3.6408 years of Venus were left to run. That is the number the whole ladder is scaled from.

Notice what the partial first period does. Because only 3.64 years of a 20-year Venus chapter remained, this chart loses more than sixteen years of Venus and reaches Rahu at age 26 instead of age 43. Two charts with the same nine lords in the same order can sit a decade and a half apart in their lives, and the balance at birth is the only reason.

On 26 August 2026 this chart is running Rahu at the top, Saturn in the middle and Mercury at the third level, and the Mercury pratyantar ends on 20 October 2026. That is a date. It is the thing readers keep asking for and the thing a page written for everybody cannot supply.

Sixty months of the same ladder

The table above stops in October 2028 because that is where the Rahu-Saturn antardasha stops. Carrying the third level forward five years from today produces 21 pratyantar periods, spanning three antardashas.

Two things in that table are worth pausing on. The rows are wildly uneven in length, from 19 days to 173, because a pratyantar's share is its lord's own share of 120 years and those shares run from the Sun's 6 to Venus's 20. And the rhythm changes character partway down: the Rahu-Ketu antardasha starting in May 2031 is only 383 days long, so its nine pratyantars are all short, and the chart moves through nine different lords in about a year where the previous stretch took three.

Across the whole 120-year cycle of this chart there are 729 pratyantar periods. The shortest is three days, the longest 192, and the median 41. That distribution is the practical argument for reading the third level at all: the middle level says what kind of two or three years you are in, and the third says which six weeks inside it are which.

Two people born on the same day, two different ladders

Everything above came from one birth time. Here is the same calendar day, the same city, 16 hours and 30 minutes later: 17 March 1994, 23:10 IST, Pune.

By that hour the Moon has moved from 24.2395 degrees to 32.3598 degrees, crossing out of Aries into Taurus and out of Bharani into Krittika. Krittika's ruling planet is the Sun, not Venus. So the second chart is born into a Sun mahadasha with 3.4381 of its 6 years unspent, where the first was born into Venus with 3.6408 of 20 unspent.

Both charts happen to be in a Rahu mahadasha today, which is the kind of coincidence that makes shared-date astrology look plausible for about ten seconds. Their Rahu chapters begin just over six years apart and end just over six years apart. Below that they share nothing: not the antardasha lord, not the pratyantar lord, not a single boundary date in the five-year window. One of them has 21 third-level periods coming and the other has 28.

A question like "what is my Ketu mahadasha Venus antardasha trying to teach me" therefore has no general answer, and the reason is not that the meaning of Ketu and Venus is unknown. That meaning is written down and stable, and Ketu Mahadasha Venus Antardasha sets it out. What is missing without a birth time is when it starts, when it ends, and which pratyantar is running underneath it now.

Your birth place moves no date, and changes what every date means

Run the same 17 March 1994, 06:40 IST through six different Indian cities and the ladder does not shift by a day.

The Moon's longitude is the same everywhere at the same instant, so the dasha dates come out identical in all six. That is genuinely useful to know. If you have your birth date and time but are unsure of the exact town, your ladder is still right, provided the town keeps the same clock. A time-zone shift is a clock shift, and the clock is what the ladder reads.

The ascendant is the part that moves, because it depends on where on Earth you were standing. Five of those cities give a Pisces ascendant, and Ahmedabad, by less than one degree, gives Aquarius. That single degree relocates every planet in the chart by one house. Rahu, the lord of the running mahadasha, sits in the 9th house in the Pune version and the 10th in the Ahmedabad version. Saturn and Mercury, the lords of the running antardasha and pratyantar, sit in the 12th house in the Pune version and the 1st in the Ahmedabad version.

Those are opposite readings of the same period. The 12th house signifies retreat, foreign lands, expense and release. The 1st signifies self, body, vitality and how you meet the world. Same dates, same three lords, and a period that reads as withdrawal in one chart and as personal exposure in the other. The dates come from the Moon and the meaning comes from the ascendant, and both have to be right.

What a wrong birth time actually costs

Birth times get rounded. Hospital records say 6:40 when a nurse wrote it at 6:43, families remember "around dawn", and certificates across much of India carry the hour and not the minute. It helps to know the size of the error rather than to worry about it in the abstract.

Here is example A recomputed at eleven different birth times, with everything else held fixed.

Read down the last column. One minute either way moves the running pratyantar's start by four to five days. Five minutes moves it by about three weeks. Ten minutes moves it by about six weeks, which is longer than several of the periods in the tables above. At thirty minutes the running lord changes from Mercury to Venus, and at an hour early the antardasha lord itself changes from Saturn to Jupiter.

The practical rule falls out of those numbers. If you know your birth time to the minute, the third level is trustworthy and you can plan a fortnight around it. If you know it to within five or ten minutes, read the third level as a window with soft edges rather than as a boundary, and use the second level for anything you are committing to. If you only know the hour, read the mahadasha and antardasha, both of which stay stable across an hour of doubt, and treat the third level as ordering rather than as dating: the sequence of lords is right even where the dates are not.

If you have no birth time at all the ladder cannot be built, because the Moon travels roughly 13 degrees a day and can cross a nakshatra boundary inside one day, exactly as it does between examples A and B above. A birth-time correction sitting is the usual route, and it works by matching known dated events in your life against the boundaries each candidate time produces.

How to read a single rung

Three lords run at once and each one is doing a different job. Working from the example A chart on 26 August 2026:

Rahu, the mahadasha lord. Its theme in AstroMedha's reading is ambition, innovation and worldly growth. In this chart Rahu sits in the 9th house, which signifies elders, teachers, patrons, fortune and the father. The 18-year chapter therefore has its ambition pointed at mentors, institutions and long-range good fortune rather than at, say, income or home. Rahu Mahadasha covers the chapter itself in full.

Saturn, the antardasha lord. Its theme is discipline, karma and mastery. In this chart Saturn sits in the 12th house, retreat, foreign lands, expense and release, and it is in its own sign, meaning the sign it rules, which is the rating classical practice gives a planet sitting where it is most at home. A comfortable Saturn in the 12th during a Rahu chapter reads as sustained, structured work done away from the centre of things, and it runs to 18 October 2028.

Mercury, the pratyantar lord. Its theme is communication, business and intelligence. Mercury also sits in the 12th house in this chart, and its dignity, meaning the classical rating of how comfortably a planet sits in the sign it occupies, is neutral: neither strengthened nor weakened by that sign. Its window is 26 May to 20 October 2026, 147 days.

The reading is the stack rather than any one rung. The chapter is about patrons and long-range fortune, the section inside it is disciplined work at a distance, and the paragraph inside that is communication and business, ending on 20 October 2026. A theme that shows up at all three levels at once carries more weight than one that shows up at a single level.

Two guards are worth naming, because they are where dasha readings usually go wrong. The first is level collapse. A Rahu-Saturn-Mercury stack is not a "Rahu-Mercury antardasha", and dropping the middle lord produces a period that is not running and dates that belong to something else. The second is dignity. The same lord in the same house reads differently depending on whether it is exalted, meaning placed in the one sign classical practice rates it strongest, in its own sign, debilitated, meaning placed in the sign directly opposite that strongest one, or neutral. In example A, Venus is exalted and sits in the 1st house, so the Venus pratyantar arriving on 20 December 2026 lands on a strong placement. In example B, Venus is exalted in the 5th house and the Moon is exalted in the 7th, which is a different chart entirely despite the shared birthday.

What our own dasha pages do not do

AstroMedha publishes 311 pages carrying dasha, antardasha or transit in the address, including one for each of the 81 mahadasha and antardasha pairs. On 26 August 2026 we checked the 155 of them sitting on the four dasha templates for a four-digit year anywhere in the text. The count was zero.

That is correct for what those pages are. Rahu Mahadasha Saturn Antardasha describes the pairing this page's example is living through, and it holds for anyone in that combination. Holding for anyone is exactly why it cannot hold a date.

Questions

What is the difference between a pratyantar and an antardasha? Both are sub-periods, and the difference is depth. An antardasha is one ninth of a mahadasha, weighted by its lord. Inside the 18-year Rahu chapter on this page the nine antardashas run from 328 days to 1,095. A pratyantar is one ninth of an antardasha on the same weighting, and measured across the whole life of that chart the 729 of them run from 3 days to 192. The one running today is 147 days long and sits inside an antardasha of 1,040.

How many pratyantar periods are there in a life? Nine mahadashas, nine antardashas in each, and nine pratyantars in each of those gives 729 across a full 120-year cycle. Computed over the example A chart, the shortest is 3 days, the longest 192, and the median 41.

Why does the first mahadasha not start at the beginning? Because the cycle was already running when you were born. Your Moon's position inside its nakshatra says how far through that lord's period you arrived, and only the remainder is yours. In example A only 3.6408 years of a 20-year Venus period were left, so the Venus chapter closed before the fourth birthday.

Does a pratyantar mean an event will happen on that date? It marks when a particular combination of planetary lords starts and stops governing the reading. Vedic practice treats those boundaries as the points where conditions change rather than as appointments, and a period is read together with the transits crossing it. What the dates give you is a defensible window instead of a vague season, and the honest use of them is planning.

Can I get my ladder without a birth time? Not reliably. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and can change nakshatra within a single day, which changes the first mahadasha lord and every date under it. The two examples on this page share a birthday and differ at every level. If your time is uncertain, a birth-time correction that tests candidate times against dated events in your life is the route to take.

What if my birth time is off by a few minutes? Measured on the example chart, one minute moves the running third-level boundary by four to five days, five minutes by about three weeks, and ten minutes by about six weeks. At thirty minutes the running lord changes. Read the first two levels as solid, and treat the third as a window with soft edges until your time is confirmed to the minute.

Which level should I plan around? The mahadasha for the shape of a decade, the antardasha for the shape of a year or two, and the pratyantar for the shape of a quarter. Where all three lords point the same way the signal is strongest, and where they disagree the shorter period usually describes the surface while the longer one describes the direction.
