Ask Your Chart: Work and Career

A Vedic chart puts working life in two houses rather than one. The 10th house carries career, status and reputation: the thing you are publicly known for doing. The 6th house carries daily work, service, competition and rivals: the job itself, the hours, the people you have to get past to do it. Each house is ruled by one planet, called that house's lord, and those two planets are never the same planet in any chart ever cast. Every reader therefore has two separate planets carrying work, in two separate conditions, running on two separate schedules. Career advice built on the 10th house alone is answering half the question, which is why so much of it lands as noise.

That is the mechanical reason "I am respected and I dread Monday" is not a contradiction in a chart. It is an ordinary shape. One ruler can be strong and the other under pressure, and nothing in the chart requires them to agree.

Four things decide what your own answer looks like. Which planet rules your 10th house and what condition it is in. Which planet rules your 6th and what condition that one is in. Which planet's period is running over you right now. And where Saturn is standing relative to the Moon you were born under. The first of those needs only your rising sign, and the fourth needs only your Moon sign, so two of the four are settled by the tables on this page. The other two need your birth date, time and place, because a period ladder is computed from the Moon's exact position at birth.

The two work houses are never ruled by the same planet

A house's lord is the planet that rules the sign sitting on that house. In the Whole-Sign system this engine uses, each house is one whole sign, counted forward from your rising sign, so if Scorpio rises then Scorpio is the 1st house, Sagittarius the 2nd, and so on to Libra as the 12th. Your 6th house is the sixth sign from your rising sign and your 10th is the tenth.

The 6th and the 10th always stand exactly four signs apart, whichever sign rises. Five planets rule two signs each, and not one of those five pairs stands four apart: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio (seven apart), Venus rules Taurus and Libra (five), Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo (three), Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces (three), Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius (one). The Sun rules Leo alone and the Moon rules Cancer alone. Checking all twelve pairs of signs that stand four apart returns no pair with a shared ruler, so there is no rising sign for which the two work rulers turn out to be one planet.

So a career reading that names one planet has answered half your question at best. If your 10th lord is Saturn and your 6th lord is Mercury, then the standing you build and the daily work you do are timed by two different clocks and can be in opposite condition for decades.

Your rising sign fixes both rulers

Four rows are bolded because one planet is doing two jobs in them. For Virgo and Pisces rising, the planet ruling the chart as a whole also rules the 10th, so the same planet carries both who you are and what you are known for. For Taurus and Scorpio rising, the chart ruler also rules the 6th, so it carries both who you are and the daily grind. Those four rising signs are the only ones where the planet ruling the chart is also one of the two work rulers. If you are one of them, that single planet's condition explains twice as much, so read it first.

What condition means, and what counts as ordinary

Condition is five checks on a planet, and each one has a plain answer.

Which house it sits in. The ruler of a house rarely sits inside it. Across 120,000 charts, the 10th ruler lands almost evenly across all twelve houses, from 7.91% in the 2nd and 12th to 8.92% in the 6th. No house is a rare landing, so the house your 10th ruler occupies tells you where your career effort actually goes, and not whether you are lucky.

Its dignity. Dignity is whether the planet sits in a sign it has a formal relationship with. Own sign means it rules the sign it is standing in. Exalted, meaning it sits in the one sign the tradition rates it strongest in. Debilitated, which is the sign directly opposite its exaltation and the one it is rated weakest in. Neutral covers everything else. The measured split for the 10th ruler is Neutral 70.06%, Own Sign 13.68%, Exalted 8.16%, Debilitated 8.10%. For the 6th ruler it is Neutral 69.14%, Own Sign 14.64%, Debilitated 8.20%, Exalted 8.02%. So seven readers in ten have a career ruler with no special dignity at all, and that is the normal case rather than a shortfall.

Whether it is moving backwards. A planet is retrograde, meaning that seen from Earth it appears to travel backwards through the zodiac for a stretch. The 10th ruler is retrograde in 14.59% of charts.

Whether it is lost in the Sun. A planet is combust, meaning it sits close enough to the Sun that it cannot be seen, and the tradition reads that as the planet's own agenda being overridden by the Sun's. The 10th ruler is combust in 15.99% of charts. Combustion and dignity are independent, so a planet can be exalted and combust at once, which is a real and specific shape rather than a mistake in the chart.

What sits with it. The companion that changes the reading most is the other work ruler. The 6th and 10th rulers share a single house in 11.98% of charts, against the 8.33% you would get if the two landed independently, and when they do share one, the two sides of working life tend to move together rather than on separate clocks.

With those five in hand, the question becomes whether what you are looking at is ordinary or distinguishing. All figures are from the same 120,000 charts, cast for New Delhi with the birth date drawn uniformly from 1980 to 2010 and the birth minute drawn uniformly from the day.

That last row is the only genuinely rare one, at roughly one chart in 185. Every other row is shared by between one reader in three and one in thirteen. That is why the numbers are printed beside the names: a configuration that sounds dramatic when a reading announces it is usually one that several people in a room of fifty also have.

An empty 10th house is what most people have

Counting the seven classical planets, 59.72% of charts have nothing at all in the 10th house. Counting Rahu and Ketu, the two lunar nodes that the tradition treats as chart points rather than bodies, it is still empty in 49.87%. One planet lands there in 27.01% of charts, two in 9.38%, three in 3.14%, and four or more in under 1%. The 6th house behaves almost identically, empty of the seven in 59.50%.

An empty 10th is not a weak career and it is not a missing one. It means the house is read entirely through its ruler, wherever that ruler has landed, so an empty 10th sends you straight back to the five condition checks on that one planet. A reader with three planets in the 10th has a busier house to read and no head start.

The chart is fixed. The period is what moves.

Your two work rulers and their condition are fixed at birth and stay fixed. What changes across a life is the period ladder. Where you start in that order is set by the exact position of the Moon at your birth, which is why two people born the same week can be twenty years apart in the cycle. Each major period is divided into nine sub-periods, called antardashas, the sub-period inside the major period, running in the same nine-lord order and starting with the major period's own lord. Each sub-period divides again into pratyantar, the level below the sub-period, which is what makes a date rather than a year.

The question this answers for a work reading is narrow and useful: is the planet that rules your 6th or 10th house one of the planets currently running?

How much of a life your career ruler actually runs

Because the lengths are fixed, the share of a life a given planet spends running as either major or sub-period lord is fixed too, and it is very uneven. Combine that with the rising-sign table above and you get the share of a life in which your own 10th ruler is one of the two planets in charge.

A Leo or Capricorn rising has their 10th ruler in charge for about 37 years of a 120-year cycle. A Scorpio rising has theirs in charge for about 12. That is a three-fold difference and it is arithmetic, not judgement.

The obvious next question is whether this makes a Scorpio rising's career worse, and the honest answer is that the figure says nothing about outcome. It says how often the planet formally carrying rank is the one running the clock. A Scorpio rising spends most of a life with the 10th ruled by a planet that is not on duty, so their career movement is more likely to arrive through the houses that are running than through the one labelled career. Which houses those are is a fact about their specific chart, not about Scorpio.

Roughly three years in ten, nothing running touches your work at all

Take 40,000 charts, sample each at one random moment of adult life between age 20 and 60, and ask whether the two planets in charge at that moment have any connection to either work house. A connection counts if the planet rules the 10th, rules the 6th, sits in the 10th, sits in the 6th, or reaches the 10th by aspect.

Read the third row slowly, because it is the answer a great many people are looking for. For about three years in every ten, neither of the planets running your life has anything to do with your career houses. In those years work does not stall because your chart is weak. It is quiet because the clock is on some other part of the chart, and the two planets on duty are busy elsewhere. That period ends on a date you can look up rather than on a date you have to wait for.

If you are inside one of those quiet stretches, the useful move is not to force the career question. It is to find which houses the running planets do occupy, and to put the effort there, because that is the part of the chart currently being paid attention to.

The same texture comes back, and you can date its return

"Why does this keep happening" often means "this feels exactly like it did in 2013". There is a mechanical reason a period can rhyme with an earlier one. Every planet is the sub-period lord exactly nine times in a 120-year cycle, once inside each major period. Its sub-periods together add up to exactly its own major-period length: Saturn is the sub-period lord for exactly 19 of every 120 years, Venus for exactly 20, the Sun for exactly 6.

What varies is the spacing, and it varies a lot.

The average gap is identical for all nine and it is exactly 13.33 years, because nine returns are spread across 120 years however unevenly they fall.

So a work pattern keyed to one planet does return, and on average about thirteen years later, but the gap in your own timeline can be six years or thirty-three. A rule of thumb like "these things come round every twelve years" is right often enough to be tempting and wrong often enough to send you looking in the wrong decade. Where Saturn is standing right now, counted from your Moon

The last of the four inputs is a transit, meaning where a planet is in the sky today rather than where it was at your birth. For work, the one that matters most is Saturn, because it holds a sign for about two and a half years, so it colours a whole career chapter rather than a week.

On 26 August 2026 Saturn is in Pisces at 19 degrees 45 minutes, moving retrograde, in the lunar mansion Revati, quarter 1.

Saturn's passage is counted from your Moon sign, not from your rising sign and not from your 10th house. Find your Moon sign and read across. Your Moon sign is on any free Vedic chart, including ours, and it is often different from the sign you would call your Moon sign in a Western chart, because Vedic charts measure signs against the fixed stars.

Sade Sati is the roughly seven-and-a-half-year stretch in which Saturn crosses the three signs around your Moon: the sign before it, the sign itself, and the sign after. Dhaiya, sometimes called small panoti, is the shorter pass when Saturn crosses the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon. Right now that is five of the twelve Moon signs carrying one or the other, which is a reminder that these are common seasons rather than rare afflictions.

What the passage asks of you, in the words our own career reading uses: Saturn is passing over the three signs around your Moon, which stands for your steadiness and your base, so keep big launches and risky switches for after this passes, hold your ground, and cut what drains you. It is a season, not a verdict.

Saturn's passage is read from the Moon and your work houses are read from the rising sign, so a chart with an excellent 10th house can be in the middle of Sade Sati, and both readings are true at the same time. They are answers to different questions. The 10th says what your working life is built to do. Saturn from the Moon says how much steadiness and reserve you have while it happens. That combination is the shape behind a great many "my career is objectively fine and I feel flattened" questions, and the third chart worked out further down is exactly it.

When your Saturn passage actually ends

Saturn does not leave a sign cleanly, because it turns retrograde once a year and can step back into the sign it just left. Every date below was found by searching the engine's own positions day by day for the crossing.

Which gives every current passage a real end date, and a false one to ignore:

The gap between the two columns is about eight months in both cases, eight months of a passage that appeared to be over. If you have planned a launch, a resignation or a move for the month after Saturn changes sign, check the second date rather than the first.

Two Moon signs should also know what is coming. When Saturn settles into Aries on 2028-02-23, a Taurus Moon begins Sade Sati, because Aries is the sign before Taurus. The D-10 adds detail, and it costs you a precise birth time

The dashamsha, written D-10, is a divisional chart, a chart built by cutting each sign of your birth chart into equal parts and reading which part a planet fell in. The D-10 cuts each sign into ten slices of 3 degrees and is the chart Vedic astrology assigns specifically to working life. It is genuinely more detailed than the 6th and 10th houses, and it is far more fragile, for one reason: its rising sign moves ten times faster than your birth chart's does.

That fragility is measurable, and it decides which parts of a reading you can trust when your birth time is a family memory rather than a certificate. Taking 30,000 charts and rounding each birth time to the nearest half hour, the way a remembered time usually is:

So the whole of this page's method survives a rounded birth time about fourteen times in fifteen, and a D-10 house reading built on the same time is right slightly less often than a coin toss. The planets' D-10 signs are much steadier than the D-10 rising sign, because the Sun moves about a degree a day and Saturn about a degree a month, so half an hour of doubt does not move them. The Moon is the exception, covering about 13 degrees a day, which is four D-10 slices.

A strong career ruler placed in the house of daily work

Born 20:52 IST on 10 May 1989 in Mumbai. Scorpio rises at 21 degrees 06 minutes, so the 10th house is Leo and its ruler is the Sun, while the 6th house is Aries and its ruler is Mars.

The Sun sits in Aries at 26 degrees 14 minutes, exalted, and it sits in the 6th house. So the planet carrying this chart's rank is at its strongest possible dignity and is standing in the house of daily work and rivals. Mars, ruling that 6th house, has gone to Gemini in the 8th, Neutral. The 10th house itself holds no classical planet, only Ketu, and is aspected by Rahu.

Read together, this is a chart whose standing is earned inside the daily grind rather than above it: the recognition planet is at full strength and is doing its work in the house of service and competition. This is the 8.92% configuration: the 10th ruler sitting in the 6th house.

Then the timing. Since 20 December 2024 this chart has run a Ketu major period, ending 20 December 2031, and Ketu sits in the 10th house. Inside it, the Sun sub-period runs 18 July 2026 to 23 November 2026, and the Sun is the 10th ruler. So right now both planets in charge are connected to the 10th house, which is the 14.92% case, and the sub-period closes in under three months.

The next Sun sub-period after this one does not begin until 21 April 2035, inside a Venus major period. That is a gap of eight and a half years. For a Scorpio rising the Sun runs only 9.75% of a 120-year cycle, the smallest share of any rising sign, so these windows are both short and widely spaced. The sub-periods that follow are the Moon from 23 November 2026, sitting in the 9th house, then Mars from 24 June 2027, which is the 6th ruler and sits in the 8th, then Rahu from 20 November 2027 in the 4th.

Saturn stands in the 9th sign from this chart's Cancer Moon on 26 August 2026, so neither Sade Sati nor Dhaiya is running. Saturn will not reach the sign before this Moon until it enters Gemini on 31 May 2032, which is when this chart's Sade Sati begins.

The composed D-10 rising sign is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn, making the D-10 10th sign Scorpio, ruled by Mars, with no planet in it. The Sun's own D-10 sign is Sagittarius.

A career ruler at its strongest dignity, and undercut by one other fact

Born 05:38 IST on 25 October 1989 in Mumbai. Virgo rises at 23 degrees 31 minutes. This is one of the two rising signs from the bolded rows above: Mercury rules both the chart and the 10th house. The 6th house is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn.

Mercury sits in Virgo at 26 degrees 56 minutes, in the 1st house, exalted, which is the strongest dignity the engine assigns. It is also combust, sitting about 11 degrees from a Sun that is itself debilitated in Libra in the 2nd house. Exaltation reaches the 10th ruler in 8.16% of charts and combustion in 15.99%, and this chart has both at once. That pairing is why a chart can look outstanding written down and still feel as though the recognition never quite arrives. Saturn, ruling the 6th, is Neutral in Sagittarius in the 4th and reaches the 10th by aspect. The 10th house itself holds Jupiter.

The timing here is at a hinge. The Mars major period ends on 24 October 2026, seven years after it began, and the Moon sub-period inside it ends the same day. That is a full major-period change, the largest kind of transition in this system, and it is under two months out. What follows is the Rahu major period, eighteen years, from 24 October 2026 to 2044, opening with its own Rahu sub-period to 7 July 2029. Rahu sits in the 5th house here.

The next Mercury sub-period, meaning the next stretch in which this chart's 10th ruler is on duty, does not begin until 6 October 2034. Between now and then the 10th ruler is out of charge for eight years, which is the honest answer to any question about when the exalted Mercury finally pays. The 6th ruler Saturn comes on duty earlier, from 30 November 2031.

Saturn stands in the 8th sign from this chart's Leo Moon, so Dhaiya is running now and ends 23 February 2028. Sade Sati for a Leo Moon does not begin until Saturn enters Cancer on 13 July 2034.

The composed D-10 rising sign is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, so the D-10 10th sign is Virgo, ruled by Mercury again, with no planet in it. Venus is exalted in Pisces in the D-10.

Everything career-shaped is firing, and Saturn is sitting on the Moon

Born 12:22 IST on 12 November 1986 in Bhopal. Capricorn rises at 17 degrees 40 minutes, in the lunar mansion Shravana, quarter 3. The 10th house is Libra and its ruler is Venus. The 6th house is Gemini and its ruler is Mercury.

Venus sits in Libra in its own sign, in the 10th house, retrograde. That is the 8.51% placement. Mercury, ruling the 6th, is also in Libra in the 10th, Neutral, retrograde and combust, so both work rulers share one house, which is the 11.98% case. The 10th house holds three planets: the Sun, Mercury and Venus, putting this chart in the 3.14% of charts with three classical planets in the 10th. The Sun there is debilitated. Jupiter aspects the whole group from Aquarius in the 2nd.

The timing is as concentrated as the placement. This chart has been running a Venus major period since 5 August 2023, lasting twenty years to 5 August 2043, and the sub-period inside it has been Venus as well, from 5 August 2023 to 5 December 2026. So for more than three years, the planet ruling the 10th house has been the major-period lord, the sub-period lord, and a planet in its own sign in its own house. For a Capricorn rising, Venus runs 30.56% of a 120-year cycle, the joint-highest share of any rising sign. On paper the career machinery of this chart could not be more switched on.

And on 26 August 2026, Saturn is standing exactly on this chart's Pisces Moon, in the peak phase of Sade Sati, which by the ingress dates above ends on 17 April 2030 rather than at the false exit on 8 August 2029. The engine's own 60-month transit calendar for this chart opens with a brace window from 26 August 2026 to 26 December 2028, carrying two notes: Saturn is in the Sade Sati stretch around the Moon, and Saturn also reaches the 10th house of career, adding weight and scrutiny.

This is the shape worth naming, because it is the one people describe as "everything looks fine and I am running on empty". The 10th house is doing what a strong 10th does. The Moon, which carries steadiness and reserves, has Saturn parked on it in a seven-and-a-half-year passage with three and a half years still to run. Those are not the same reading and neither cancels the other. The chart's own next step is nearby: the Venus sub-period ends on 5 December 2026 and a Sun sub-period runs to 5 December 2027, with the Sun also in the 10th house though debilitated there.

The composed D-10 rising sign is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn, making the D-10 10th sign Scorpio, ruled by Mars, empty. Venus is exalted in Pisces in the D-10, so the career ruler is strong in both charts.

What none of this can tell you

There is no occupational data in a birth chart, so any specific job title read off one is being supplied by the reader rather than by the chart. The Career & Timing Report says so in its own description and prints no job title. The same goes for a salary figure.

The 6th and 10th houses describe how working life is put together and carry no dates at all. Dates come from the period ladder and from transits, which is why every worked chart above names its running periods separately. And a date in this system marks when a planet takes charge, not what it does with the charge. A Sun sub-period on a chart with an exalted Sun in the 6th says the recognition planet is on duty for four months. What is built in those four months is not in the chart.

The pages this replaces

Over the 29 days from 24 July to 21 August 2026, 36 of the 40 were shown in search at all, and together they took 22 clicks on 1,008 impressions, with only 2 of the 40 clearing 2 clicks. At query level the whole family returned 29 page-and-query rows and every single one had zero clicks. The strings people were shown those pages for include "yes", "yes all the above", "more in detail", and fragments in German, Greek, Russian, Thai and Chinese. Those are fragments of somebody's chat with an assistant, not searches for a Vedic reading.

The diagnosis is that those pages matched the feeling and had nothing chart-shaped to answer it with. The feelings were real. Employment timing is the single largest thing users type into our chart chat, 237 mentions from 169 people, and workplace and career-direction questions add 130 mentions more. What those pages never had was the reader's own 10th ruler, 6th ruler, running period and Saturn passage, which is what this page is built from. Those 40 pages now point here, and so do four longer ones that carried the same problem: actor astrology, when to change jobs, a side business alongside a job and work-life balance. Between them those four took 0 clicks on 216 impressions in the same 29 days, with the job-change page sitting at average position 3.7 and converting none of its 164 impressions.
