Ashwin Maas: The Month That Empties Before It Fills

Ashwin is the best built month in the Hindu calendar, and you can see the design in one sentence: its dark half is given entirely to the dead and its bright half entirely to the Goddess. The fortnight in which nothing may be started is followed immediately by the nine nights in which everything is.

The Dark Half: Nothing Begins

Ashwin opens with Pitru Paksha, sixteen days of shraddha and tarpan for the ancestors. Water with black sesame is offered to three generations of the paternal line, food is set aside for crows, cows and dogs before the household eats, and each ancestor is remembered on the lunar day they died. No weddings, no house warmings, no new ventures, no purchases. The fortnight closes on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the new moon that covers every ancestor whose date nobody remembers.

The Bright Half: Everything Begins

The morning after that new moon the year turns. Ghatasthapana installs a kalash, a pot of water with barley sown in it, and Sharad Navratri begins. Nine nights are given to the nine forms of Durga, from Shailaputri on the first to Siddhidatri on the ninth, and the barley sprouts through the nine days as a reading of the coming year's abundance. Ashtami and Navami carry the kanya pujan, where young girls are fed and honoured as living forms of the Goddess. The tenth day is Dussehra, when Rama kills Ravana and Durga kills Mahishasura, and the effigies burn at dusk.

Then the month ends on Sharad Purnima, the harvest full moon, held to be the brightest of the year. Kheer is left out overnight under the moonlight and eaten at dawn, on the understanding that the Moon's rays carry amrita, the nectar of immortality, on that one night.

Read as a whole, the month is a clearing followed by a filling. The tradition puts the debt to the past before the launch of the future, and it does not allow you to do them in the other order.

One Month, Four Faces

The bright half of Ashwin looks different depending on where you keep it. Bengal, Assam and Odisha keep Durga Puja, five days of the Goddess in vast clay images under lit pandals, ending with the immersion on the tenth day. Gujarat keeps nine nights of garba and dandiya danced in a circle around the lamp. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra keep Golu, a stepped display of dolls in the house, with Saraswati worshipped near the end and the books taken up again on the tenth. The north keeps the Ramlila and burns the effigies. The tithis are the same across all four.

The Star Behind the Name

Ashwin is named for Ashwini, the first of the twenty seven lunar mansions, whose lord is Ketu and whose deities are the Ashwini Kumaras, the physician twins of the Vedas. Its symbol is a horse's head and its qualities are speed, healing and beginnings.

That is a precise fit. Ketu is the planet of endings, of ancestry and of what is already finished, and Ketu's own star names the month whose first half belongs to the ancestors. The same star is the first mansion of the zodiac, the swiftest and the one most associated with fresh starts, and it names the month whose second half is the year's great beginning. One star holds both halves.

The Sun moves from Virgo into Libra during Ashwin, leaving Mercury's sign for Venus's, and Libra is where the Sun sits at its weakest. The calendar answers that with nine nights of the Goddess, which is a reasonable thing to do in the month the Sun has least to give.

Whose Month This Really Is

Ashwin does specific work on specific charts.

If you are running a Ketu period, this is your month of the year. Both halves are made of Ketu's material, the ancestors in the first and the swift clean start in the second, and people in a Ketu period tend to find the whole thing legible in a way others do not.

If you were born under Ashwini, Magha or Mula, the three mansions Ketu governs, the month carries your own signature and Navratri is worth keeping properly rather than casually.

If your Sun is weak, or if you were born with the Sun in Libra, the middle of Ashwin is the point in the year when the Sun is at its lowest ebb, and it is worth planning around. Keep the confrontations, the negotiations and the demands for recognition out of that stretch. Do the Navratri fast instead, which is what the month is offering you.

If you have a venture waiting for a strong day, Dussehra is one of the three and a half abujha muhurats of the year, the days held to be so auspicious in themselves that no special hour needs to be found inside them. It is the classic day to start something you want to succeed, and it sits ten days after the month's own closed fortnight ends.

The 2026 Window

In Purnimanta reckoning, Ashwin 2026 runs from 27 September to 26 October.

Pitru Paksha runs 27 September to 10 October 2026, closing on Sarva Pitru Amavasya. Ghatasthapana and the first day of Sharad Navratri fall on 11 October 2026. Durga Ashtami falls on 19 October. Dussehra, Vijayadashami, falls on 20 October. The month closes on Sharad Purnima, 26 October 2026, and Karva Chauth follows three days later on 29 October.

In Amanta reckoning, Ashwin 2026 runs from 11 October to 9 November, so Navratri opens the month rather than sitting in its second half, and Pitru Paksha is counted as the dark half of Bhadrapada instead. The observed days do not change.
