Dussehra 2026: Vijayadashami, the Day of Victory
Dussehra, Vijayadashami, falls on 20 October 2026. The victory of good over evil and one of the year's most auspicious days to begin ventures.
Dussehra, Vijayadashami, falls on 20 October 2026, on the tenth tithi of the bright fortnight of Ashwina, Shukla Dashami, the day after Navratri closes, which we confirmed against the panchang. It marks two victories the tradition holds as one, Rama over Ravana and Durga over the demon Mahishasura.
The Meaning of the Day
Vijayadashami means the tenth day of victory. After nine nights of the Goddess gathering her strength, the tenth is the day she wins, and the same day Rama is said to have killed Ravana at the end of his long war. Both stories carry one meaning, that gathered, patient, righteous effort overcomes even an overwhelming evil. The burning of the towering effigies of Ravana at dusk is the public face of it, the arrogance set alight in front of everyone.
Why It Is Auspicious to Begin
Vijayadashami is one of the three and a half abujha muhurats, the days so auspicious that no special window need be searched within them. The victory it carries makes it a classic day to begin anything you want to succeed, a venture, a course of study, a weapon or tool taken up, a child's learning. Soldiers and artisans traditionally honour their tools and instruments on this day, the Ayudha Puja, and students their books.
Shami, Saraswati and the Regional Day
The day carries customs beyond the Ravana burning. In Maharashtra people exchange leaves of the shami tree as gold, recalling the tree where the Pandavas hid their weapons through their exile and recovered them on this victorious day. In the east, Vijayadashami is the immersion day of Durga Puja, when the great clay images of the Goddess are carried to the water after their own nine days. In the south it closes the Saraswati worship of the festival, with the formal return to study and work. One date, many ways of marking the same turn toward victory and fresh effort. In the south, this is also a favoured day for Vidyarambham, a child's first formal lesson, the books taken up again after the Saraswati worship of the preceding days.
What the Day Asks of You
Mark the victory, watch or recall the Ravana burning, and name the arrogance or evil in your own life you want set alight with it. Honour the tools of your work, the instruments of your craft or study, in the Ayudha spirit. Most of all, if you have a venture or a first step waiting for a strong day, this is one of the best in the year to begin it.
