Kartik Maas: The Month of Lamps

Kartik carries more festivals than any other month of the Hindu year, and the tradition holds that merit earned in it counts for more than merit earned at any other time. It is the month of Diwali, of the Chhath arghya offered at sunset and sunrise, of the dawn bathing that gives the month its shape in practice, and of the day Vishnu wakes up.

The Month of Bathing

The observance that runs through the whole of Kartik is not a festival at all. Kartik snan is the practice of bathing before sunrise, in a river where there is one and at home where there is not, every day of the month. Lamps are floated on the water at dusk. Many keep a simple vow through the month: a single daily meal, no onion or garlic, the reading of the Bhagavata, and a lamp lit for Damodara, the form of Krishna bound at the waist with a rope.

The month sits at the end of Chaturmas, the four rain months when Vishnu is said to sleep, and it closes that sleep. Dev Uthani Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the bright fortnight, is the day he wakes, and it reopens the wedding season that has been shut since Ashadha. Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Vishnu, follows on the Dwadashi after it, and in most households it is the first wedding of the season.

The Five Days of Diwali

The dark fortnight of Kartik carries the year's largest festival across five days. Dhanteras opens it, when gold, silver or at least one metal vessel is brought home and Lakshmi and Dhanvantari are worshipped. Naraka Chaturdashi follows. Then Diwali itself, on the new moon, when Lakshmi Puja is done after sunset in pradosh kaal and the lamps go up at every threshold. Govardhan Puja comes next with the annakut, a mountain of cooked food offered to Krishna. Bhai Dooj closes the arc with a sister's tilak on her brother's forehead.

Chhath follows a few days later in the bright fortnight, four days of the most exacting observance in the calendar, offered to Surya standing waist deep in water at sunset and again at sunrise.

The month ends on Kartik Purnima, kept as Dev Diwali at Varanasi, where the ghats are lit end to end with lamps.

The Star Behind the Name

Kartik is named for Krittika, the lunar mansion whose lord is the Sun and whose deity is Agni, fire. Its symbol is a flame and a razor, and its quality is purification, the burning away of what should not survive.

The month of lamps is named after a star of fire, and that tells you what the lamps are doing. Krittika's fire is the cutting kind, the one that separates rather than merely warms, and every major observance of Kartik is a form of clearing: the pre-dawn bath, the fast, the lamp lit against the darkest new moon of the year, and Chhath's arghya offered straight into the Sun.

The Sun moves from Libra into Scorpio during Kartik, leaving Venus's sign for Mars's, and Scorpio is where the Sun begins to recover the strength it lost in Libra. That is the same movement the month makes. It starts on the darkest night of the year and ends on a full moon.

Whose Month This Really Is

Four kinds of chart get more out of Kartik than the calendar alone would suggest.

If your Sun is weak or afflicted, showing as low vitality, strain with your father, or work that goes unrecognised, Chhath is the most direct Sun practice the tradition has. You stand in water and offer it to the Sun at both ends of his day, with nothing between you and the source. A weak Sun is normally treated with copper, wheat, jaggery and water offered at dawn, and Chhath is that same remedy at full strength.

If you are running a Venus period, or your Venus is strong, the Diwali half of the month is yours. Venus carries wealth, beauty, comfort and the household in a chart, and Lakshmi Puja on the new moon is the year's high point for that territory.

If you are running a Jupiter period, Dev Uthani Ekadashi and the reopening of the wedding season fall in your season. Jupiter carries marriage in a woman's chart, and children and right timing in everyone's, and the month it wakes into is the one the tradition schedules weddings around.

If you were born under Krittika, Uttara Phalguni or Uttara Ashadha, the three mansions the Sun governs, the month carries your own signature, and the pre-dawn bath is worth keeping for its full length rather than a token few days.

The 2026 Window

In Purnimanta reckoning, Kartik 2026 runs from 27 October to 24 November. Kartik snan is kept every morning of that span.

Karva Chauth falls on 29 October 2026. Dhanteras falls on 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi on 7 November, Diwali with the evening Lakshmi Puja on 8 November, Govardhan Puja on 10 November and Bhai Dooj on 11 November. Chhath Puja runs 13 to 16 November, with the main Sandhya Arghya on 15 November. Dev Uthani Ekadashi falls on 21 November. Tulsi Vivah is kept on the Dwadashi that follows it, and because that Dwadashi does not hold a sunrise in 2026, families observe it on slightly different days, so follow your own panchang for that one. The month closes on Kartik Purnima, 24 November 2026.

In Amanta reckoning, Kartik 2026 runs from 10 November to 8 December, so Dhanteras and Diwali fall at the end of Ashwin by that count. The days kept are the same in both systems.
