Friday, 28 August 2026: the full moon, and the thread

Raksha Bandhan, on the Shravana full moon. Two of the day's five limbs are difficult, which is exactly why the rakhi has an hour rather than a whole day.

Shravana Purnima and Raksha Bandhan. The tithi ends at 09:49 IST, the yoga is Atiganda and the first karana is Vishti, which is why the rakhi is tied to an hour and not to a day.

Does any of this apply to you?

The page above is written for everyone. Your chart is not. Give us your birth date and place and we will show you which parts of it are true for you, and which are not. About 20 seconds, no account.

I do not know my birth time (we read from the Moon instead)

Today is Shravana Purnima, and it is Raksha Bandhan. The tithi ends at 09:49 IST, so the waxing fortnight closes this morning and the waning one begins.

Two of the day's five limbs are difficult. The yoga is Atiganda, one of the harder ones. The first karana is Vishti, which tradition calls Bhadra and which is the period the rakhi is not tied in. That is why this festival carries a muhurat rather than a whole day.

The tradition is doing what a panchang is for: finding the good window inside a day that is not uniformly good. Our Raksha Bandhan page sets out that window and the bhadra rule in full.

The Moon spends today in Shatabhisha, the hundred healers, whose territory is repair. Friday is Venus's day. For once the whole sky points at the same thing, and it is not achievement. It is the relationship.

So this day supports the call you have been meaning to make and the apology that is a year overdue. It does not support anything transactional.

Where that lands is your chart's business, not the sky's: the Moon is in Aquarius today, so the house Aquarius occupies for you is where this full moon actually shows up. Enter your birth date below and AstroMedha computes your chart free, no account. Save it and Chart Chat opens with two free questions.

Rahu Kaal and the choghadiya windows are cut from your local sunrise, so they differ by city. Our panchang tool computes them for yours. This day sits inside August 2026, read day by day.

Common questions

When is Raksha Bandhan in 2026?

28 August 2026, on Shravana Purnima, the full moon of the lunar month of Shravana. The Purnima tithi ends at 09:49 IST that morning.

What is Bhadra on Raksha Bandhan and why does it matter?

Bhadra is the traditional name for the Vishti karana, which is the first karana of this tithi. Custom holds that the rakhi is not tied during Bhadra, which is the reason Raksha Bandhan carries a muhurat rather than being observed at any hour of the day. Our Raksha Bandhan 2026 page sets out the window in full.

What nakshatra is the Moon in on 28 August 2026?

Shatabhisha, ruled by Rahu with Varuna as its presiding deity. The name means the hundred healers and its territory is repair and mending. It holds until 03:14 the following morning.

Does this reading apply to me personally?

Only partly. The tithi, nakshatra and yoga are the same for every reader. Which part of your life the full moon lights up is set by your own chart: the houses Aquarius and Leo occupy for you, where Venus sits, and which planetary period you are running. Entering your birth details on this page computes that, and Chart Chat then answers questions about this day against your own chart.
