Where the technique actually does its work

Most writing about the atmakaraka stops at the planet and its house. The Jaimini system does not. It takes the atmakaraka into the navamsa, the ninth divisional chart, and reads from there, and the sign it lands in has its own name: the karakamsa.

The word decomposes cleanly. Karaka is the planet that stands in for a subject, meaning the atmakaraka here. Amsa is a division, meaning the navamsa. So karakamsa is the atmakaraka's divisional sign.

What the navamsa is

The navamsa divides each of the twelve signs into equal ninths of 3 degrees 20 minutes each, and assigns each part to a sign. So every planet has a rasi sign, its ordinary one, and a navamsa sign, its divisional one.

The tradition reads the rasi chart for outward circumstance and the navamsa for the inner condition, the durable state underneath the visible one. This is why the karakamsa carries more weight in Jaimini reading than the atmakaraka's ordinary house does.

How the karakamsa is used

Here is the step that confuses people, and it is worth stating slowly.

You find the atmakaraka's sign in the navamsa. You then go back to the birth chart and treat that sign as if it were the ascendant. Houses are counted from it. That projected frame is the karakamsa lagna, and the planets sitting in and around it in the birth chart are what get read.

So the karakamsa is not a place in the navamsa that you interpret in isolation. It is a sign borrowed from the navamsa and used as a reading position in the rasi chart.

What is read from it

The sign itself describes the register where the atmakaraka's subject is pursued. A Saturn atmakaraka with karakamsa in Aries pursues its endurance very differently from the same Saturn with karakamsa in Pisces.

Planets in the karakamsa describe what the person carries in that pursuit. Classical texts assign specific readings here. The Sun in the karakamsa is read for authority and connection to the father. Ketu there is read for detachment and a pull toward release.

Why it is worth the extra step

The atmakaraka planet alone gives one reading per planet. That is far too coarse to describe a person. Adding the house gives eighty four. Adding the karakamsa sign, and what sits in it, is where the technique gets specific. It can then say something a reader recognises, rather than something that fits a seventh of the population.
