Why Your Moon Sign Here Is Different From the One You Saw Elsewhere
You have two answers for one birth moment. A site told you your Moon is in Gemini and this one says Libra, or your family has always said Punarvasu and the screen in front of you says Chitra. Both were produced by a real calculation. They differ because a Moon sign is a number that has been cut up, and there are four separate things that move either the number or the cuts.
Each of the four leaves a different-sized gap between the two answers. Once you know how big your gap is and which direction it runs in, you can tell which of the four you are looking at. Three of them mean nothing is wrong with either answer. The fourth is a birth time that is wrong or missing, and that one is worth fixing.
The single number underneath every answer
Nothing measures a Moon sign directly. What gets measured is how far the Moon had travelled around the ecliptic, the circle the Sun appears to trace against the stars over a year, at the minute of your birth. That distance is one number between 0 and 360 degrees, and everything you are shown is that number divided up.
Divide the circle into twelve and you get the rashi, meaning the sign, at 30 degrees each. Divide the same circle into twenty-seven and you get the nakshatra, meaning the lunar star the Moon was sitting in, at 13 degrees 20 minutes each. Divide it into a hundred and eight and you get the pada, meaning the quarter of a nakshatra, at 3 degrees 20 minutes each. One measurement, three different rulers laid against it.
This is why two sites that disagree about your sign almost never disagree about where the Moon was. They agree about the sky. They disagree about where the zero mark of the ruler goes, or they were handed a different birth minute, or one of them was never showing you your birth in the first place.
For the birth moment 5 January 1994 at 19:00 in Pune, AstroMedha's engine puts the Moon at 178.5805 degrees. That one number is Virgo 28 degrees 34 minutes 50 seconds, and it is Chitra nakshatra, second pada. It is also, on a Western site, Libra 22 degrees 21 minutes. All four descriptions are of the same Moon.
Cause one: the two answers start counting from zero in different places
The commonest reason your Moon sign differs is that one of the two answers is measured from the spring equinox and the other from the fixed stars.
The equinox is not fixed. The Earth's axis wobbles, so the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator in March slides backwards against the constellations by about 50 arcseconds a year. Western astrology pins zero degrees Aries to that moving equinox, which is called the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology pins zero degrees Aries to the stars, which is called the sidereal zodiac. The gap between the two zero marks is the ayanamsa, meaning the correction in degrees you apply to convert one into the other.
The gap grows. Swiss Ephemeris, the astronomical library the engine on this site computes with, gives the Lahiri ayanamsa these values:

Between 1900 and 2026 it grew by 1° 45′ 35″, which is 50.28 arcseconds a year. At that rate the two zodiacs take about 2,148 years to slide a full sign apart, so for anyone alive today the correction is a little over 24 degrees and the difference between your birth year and your parents' is a few arcminutes.
Twenty-four degrees is four-fifths of a 30-degree sign, and that has a blunt consequence. Your tropical sign is the one after your sidereal sign unless your Moon sits in the first 5° 46′ 47″ of its sidereal sign. That leaves 80.73% of the circle where the two names differ. Measured on the 1,591 birth charts stored on this site, 77.69% get a different sign under the tropical count. The two figures differ because our readers' Moons are not spread perfectly evenly around the circle.
A worked case. Someone born on 2 January 1994 at 19:00 in Kanpur. The ayanamsa on that date is 23° 46′ 24″. The engine puts their Moon at Leo 16° 16′ 47″, in Purva Phalguni nakshatra, first pada. Add the ayanamsa back and you get Virgo 10° 03′ 11″, which is what a Western chart prints. Nothing was calculated wrong on either side. The Moon was at one place and two rulers were laid against it.
So which of the two should you use?
For anything Vedic, the sidereal one, and the reason is not preference. The whole timing apparatus is built on nakshatra positions, so a Moon measured from the wrong zero does not produce a slightly different reading, it produces a different chart.
Take Vimshottari, the 120-year cycle of planetary periods that Vedic astrology dates the chapters of a life with. Its starting point is decided by which nakshatra the Moon occupied and how far through it the Moon had gone. A 24-degree shift moves the Moon by about 1.8 nakshatras, so the starting planet changes. Running the tropical Moon through this site's own period code, all 1,591 stored charts get a different period lord at birth, and 1,540 of them, or 96.79%, are shown a different major period running today.
That is the practical answer to "does it matter". If you only ever read a one-line sign description, the two systems give you two similar-sounding descriptions. The moment you ask when, they are not interchangeable.
Cause two: two Vedic sites, two ayanamsas
If both of your answers are Vedic and they still disagree, the two sites are using different values for that correction. There are several in circulation and they do not agree with each other. On 1 January 2026:

The last two columns are the part worth reading. They are not theory: each row was recomputed on all 1,591 charts stored here, and the count is how many of those readers would be told a different Moon sign or a different birth star by a site using that row.
The spread between the Vedic values is 1° 26′ 47″, from Raman at the low end to Lahiri at the high end. That is small. It only reaches you if your Moon happens to sit inside that 1° 26′ of a boundary, which is why the Raman column moves the sign for one reader in twenty-four and the nakshatra for one in nine.
A worked case, and it is the same birth as above in Pune. 5 January 1994, 19:00. Under Lahiri the Moon is at Virgo 28° 34′ 50″. Under Raman it is at Libra 0° 01′ 37″. The two answers name different signs and sit 1° 26′ apart, with the boundary in between them.
Who is right when the gap is 97 arcseconds?
Neither answer is worth more than the birth minute it rests on. The Moon covers 97 arcseconds in under three minutes of clock time, so at that distance from a boundary the choice of ayanamsa and the accuracy of the recorded time are the same size of problem. If a hospital clock was rounded to the nearest five minutes, the sign was decided by the rounding.
What this site does is fixed and stated: every chart here is computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa and the mean lunar node, on the Swiss Ephemeris. The value for your birth date is a fact about the calendar, not a setting, and the same value is used for your chart, your periods and your daily guidance, so nothing inside AstroMedha can disagree with anything else inside AstroMedha.
One row in that table is worth noticing for the opposite reason. Lahiri ICRC, a 2019 refinement, differs from Lahiri by 0.02 arcminutes and changed the sign for zero readers and the nakshatra for zero readers. A difference that small is real and never reaches a person.
Cause three: the two answers were given different birth times
The Moon is the fastest body in the chart, which makes it the one most exposed to a wrong minute.
Across 2025 the Moon's speed ran between 11.806 and 15.348 degrees a day, averaging 13.186. At the average that is 0° 32′ 58″ an hour, and it means:
- a pada takes 6.07 hours to cross
- a nakshatra takes 24.27 hours
- a sign takes 54.61 hours, or 46.91 hours when the Moon is at its fastest and 60.99 when it is at its slowest
So a nakshatra is very nearly one day of Moon motion. If two sites hold your birth date and disagree about the hour, they will usually still agree about the sign and can easily disagree about the star.
Recomputing all 1,591 stored charts at shifted birth times gives the exposure directly. Each row asks what share of readers would be told something different if their recorded time were wrong by that much in either direction:

A wrong time zone belongs in this table too. A birth time is a reading off a local clock, and turning it into a moment the ephemeris understands means subtracting the offset for that place on that date. Enter a birth in London under India's offset and you have a five-and-a-half-hour error, which is the 6-hour row.
A worked case. Someone born on 4 January 1994 at 11:15 in Hyderabad. The engine puts their Moon at Virgo 9° 53′ 25″, which is Uttara Phalguni nakshatra, fourth pada. Move the recorded time to 11:45 and the Moon is at Virgo 10° 11′ 04″, which is Hasta nakshatra, first pada. Same sign, different star, thirty minutes apart. If one site was given 11:15 and another 11:45, both are right and they will never agree.
How close is your own Moon to an edge?
For most readers, not close. Across the 1,591 stored charts the Moon sits a median 3.302 degrees from the nearer nakshatra boundary, which is about six hours of Moon motion, and a median 7.273 degrees from the nearer sign boundary, which is about 13 hours. A chart like that survives an error of two or three hours in the recorded time without changing either its sign or its star.
The tail is where the arguments happen:
- 262 readers (16.47%) have a Moon within one degree of a nakshatra boundary, which is 1 hour 49 minutes of Moon motion
- 133 readers (8.36%) are within half a degree, which is 55 minutes
- 94 readers (5.91%) have a Moon within one degree of a sign boundary
- 492 readers (30.92%) are within half a degree of a pada boundary
If you are in that tail, a disagreement between two sites is not evidence that either is broken. It is evidence that your birth time needs to be more precise than your birth record is.
And if the birth time is not known at all
When there is no time, something has to be assumed, and the usual assumption is noon. Of the 1,591 charts stored here, 192 carry the 12:00 placeholder rather than a real clock reading.
Assuming noon is a much larger intervention than it looks. Taking the 1,399 charts that do have a real birth time and recasting each of them at noon on the same date, 8.22% land in a different sign, 21.94% land in a different nakshatra and 70.34% land in a different pada. A rounded or remembered birth hour is worth a great deal more than no hour at all.
The downstream cost of a wrong hour is easier to feel in the timeline than in the label. Recording a birth an hour later than it happened changes the period lord for 4.27% of readers outright. For the other 95.73%, where the lord is unchanged, it still moves the end of the first period by a median of 231 days, and by up to 351 days. The label survives and the dates do not.
Cause four: the number you were shown was the Moon today, not your Moon
This is the one that makes people think a chart is broken, and it is the only one of the four where the two answers are not even describing the same moment.
Your Moon sign is a fact about one instant that has already happened and it never changes. The Moon in the sky right now is a different thing entirely, and it moves through all twelve signs every 27 days. Sampled at 09:00 across every day of 2026, each sign holds the Moon for between 27 and 34 days of the year, averaging 30.4. So the sky's Moon lands on any one given sign for roughly one day in twelve, and on any one given star for roughly one day in twenty-seven.
Show that value to a reader under a label they take for their own and it looks wrong to them on eleven days out of every twelve.
The specific case. On 21 July 2026 a reader wrote in to say the site was showing them Tula rashi with Chitra nakshatra, when the Moon sign they had been given all their life sits four signs away from that. A gap that size rules out the first three causes on its own: an ayanamsa moves the answer by less than one sign, and four signs is 120 degrees, which is nine days of Moon motion rather than a wrong hour. Recomputing that day: the Moon entered Libra at 07:55 IST and left Chitra at 20:49 IST, so for almost thirteen hours covering the whole working day, the Moon in the sky was in Libra under Chitra. The values on their screen were correct readings of the sky on the day they wrote. They were not readings of that reader's chart.
The dashboard now shows your own birth Moon and your own birth star. The daily guidance page shows both, with the day's Moon labelled as the day's and yours labelled as yours, because the day's Moon tells you about the day and your own Moon tells you about you.
How to tell which one a site is showing you
Open the same page tomorrow. A birth value is identical on every day of your life. If the sign moved, you were reading a transit, meaning the current position of a planet in the sky rather than its position in your chart.
What your birth place changes, and what it does not
Place is the thing people most often suspect and it is the wrong suspect for the Moon.
The same instant, 14 March 1994 at 04:30 IST, computed from four Indian cities:

The Moon is at 347.7201 degrees in all four, identical to four decimal places, because the Moon's position along the ecliptic is a fact about the solar system at that instant and does not care where you stand. The rising sign is a fact about your horizon, so it changes with latitude and longitude, and Guwahati is far enough east to be looking at a different part of the sky at the same clock reading.
Where place does reach the Moon is through the clock. A birth place fixes which time zone the recorded time belongs to, and a wrong zone is a wrong instant. That is cause three again, arriving through the place field instead of the time field, and it is worth checking whenever a birth happened outside India.
One birth, how many answers
Taking all 1,591 stored charts and computing each Moon under the seven sidereal starting points above plus the tropical one, on the same birth instant:
- 1,283 charts (80.64%) produce two different Moon signs across the eight methods, and 308 (19.36%) produce one
- every single chart produces at least two different nakshatras, and 304 (19.11%) produce three
Not one chart in the store yields a single star across the eight methods. "My Moon sign" becomes a complete answer only once the count it was measured in has been named, which is why this page names Lahiri beside every number it gives, and why every chart on this site is computed under that one value.
Reconciling the two numbers you actually have
You do not need to work through all four causes. The size and direction of your gap picks one out:
The other answer is exactly one sign later than ours. Cause one. That is a tropical reading and the gap is the ayanamsa. Nothing is wrong with either number. Vedic vs Western will show you your own chart in both counts side by side from a date of birth alone.
The signs agree and the nakshatras do not. Either cause two, if the other site runs Raman or Yukteshwar, or cause three, if your Moon is within an hour or two of a star boundary. Check where your Moon sits inside its star: if it is past 1 degree from either edge, the ayanamsa is the likelier culprit.
Both answers name signs more than one apart. Check the birth data itself before anything else, starting with the time zone and then the date. A gap of several signs is a gap of several days of Moon motion, and no method choice produces that.
The value changed when you looked again on another day. Cause four. That was the sky, not your chart.
The two answers are within a degree of each other and land on opposite sides of a boundary. Nothing here will settle it, and no other site can settle it either. What settles it is a more precise birth time. A birth certificate with minutes on it is worth more than any recalculation.
What you can compute right now, and what an account adds

How these numbers were produced
Every chart figure on this page comes from app/engines/vedic_astrology.get_all_positions, the same function that computes charts for readers on this site, running the Swiss Ephemeris in its Moshier mode with the Lahiri ayanamsa and the mean lunar node. Alternative starting points were computed through the identical Swiss Ephemeris routine with only the sidereal mode changed, and that path was checked against the product engine on a known chart before anything was counted: both returned the same Moon longitude to a difference of zero.
The reader statistics are 1,591 distinct birth charts held in AstroMedha's own profile store, taken from all 1,661 profile rows with duplicates on date, clock and place removed. 192 of the 1,591 carry the 12:00 placeholder instead of a real birth time, and every statement about birth-time accuracy uses the 1,399 that carry a real clock as its denominator. This is a sample of the people who use this site, not a census of Indian births.
Period figures use calculate_dasha_balance, generate_dasha_timeline and get_current_periods from the same module, with 26 August 2026 as the date for anything described as running today. The Moon speed range is the daily sidereal speed at noon on all 365 days of 2025. The worked cases are birth moments chosen to illustrate each cause and are not anyone's records.
