Shravan Maas: The Month Given to Shiva

Shravan is the monsoon month, and it is the one month of the twelve that belongs entirely to Shiva. Nothing else in the Hindu year concentrates on a single deity for thirty straight days the way this one does. The fasting is heavier, the temple queues are longer, and the whole month is kept as one continuous observance rather than a run of separate festivals.

Why Shiva, and Why the Rain

The month sits at the height of the monsoon, when the fields are planted and there is little to do but wait. Farm work stops. Travelling ascetics stop moving and settle in one place for the four rain months of Chaturmas. Into that enforced stillness the tradition puts its most demanding devotional month, which is not a coincidence.

The reason given is the churning of the ocean. When the gods and the asuras churned the sea for the nectar of immortality, what came up first was halahala, a poison strong enough to end the world. Shiva drank it and held it in his throat, which turned blue, and he has been Neelkanth, the blue throated one, since. The story is set in Shravan, and it explains what devotees actually do: water is poured over the Shiva lingam all month, thousands of litres of it, to cool the throat that holds the poison. That is what the abhishekam is for.

The Mondays

Monday is Shiva's day and Shravan Somvar is the fast that defines the month. Devotees eat once, wear something white, visit a Shiva temple, and offer water, milk, bel leaves, bhang and dhatura on the lingam. Unmarried women keep the fast for a good husband and married women for their husband's long life, and the Solah Somvar vrat, sixteen consecutive Mondays, is traditionally begun in this month.

Tuesdays belong to Mangala Gauri, Parvati in her married aspect, and married women keep that fast for the health of the household. The two run in parallel through the month, Shiva on Monday and his consort on Tuesday.

The Kanwar Yatra

The most visible thing that happens in Shravan happens on foot. Millions of kanwariyas, dressed in saffron, walk to Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri or Sultanganj, fill sealed pots with Ganga water, and carry them slung across the shoulder on a decorated pole back to their local Shiva temple. The pot must not touch the ground for the whole journey, which is what makes it hard, and the water is poured over the lingam on Sawan Shivratri, the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight. It is one of the largest annual gatherings of walking people anywhere in the world.

The Star Behind the Name

The month is named for Shravana, the lunar mansion whose lord is the Moon and whose deity is Vishnu. The mansion's symbol is an ear and its quality is listening. That is the quiet argument sitting under a month otherwise given to fasting and walking: the month named for the ear is the month you are asked to stop working and hear something.

The Sun's position through Shravan says the same in another language. The month opens with the Sun in Cancer, the sign the Moon rules, and closes with it in Leo, the sign the Sun rules. Shravan begins in water and ends in fire, which is close to what the season itself does.

Whose Month This Really Is

Shravan presses hardest on four kinds of chart, and if you are one of them the month is worth more of your attention than a general calendar would suggest.

If you are running a Saturn period, or you are inside Sade Sati, the seven and a half years when Saturn crosses your moon sign and the signs on either side of it, Shravan is the month the tradition points you to. Shiva worship is the standing remedy for a heavy Saturn, and the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is its instrument. A practice begun on a Shravan Monday and carried on every Monday afterwards is the classic prescription, and this month is when it is easiest to start, because everyone around you is already doing it.

If the Moon in your chart is weak or afflicted, meaning broken sleep, an unsettled mind and moods that swing further than the events causing them, this is your month twice over. Monday is the Moon's own day, the month is named for a star the Moon rules, and the water poured over the lingam is the Moon's own element.

If you were born under Shravana, Rohini or Hasta, the three mansions the Moon governs, the month carries your own signature.

And if your moon sign is Cancer, the Sun spends the first half of Shravan in your sign. A fasting month with the Sun sitting in your own moon sign asks more of your body than it does of most people's, which is a practical argument for keeping the lighter form of the fast rather than the strict one.

The 2026 Window

In Purnimanta reckoning, used across north India, Shravan 2026 runs from 30 July to 28 August. The Shravan Somvars are 3, 10, 17 and 24 August 2026, and the Mangala Gauri Tuesdays are 4, 11, 18 and 25 August. Sawan Shivratri, when the Kanwar water is poured, falls on 11 August. Nag Panchami falls on 17 August, which is also a Monday, and the month closes on Shravana Purnima, 28 August, which is Raksha Bandhan.

In Amanta reckoning, used across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and the south, Shravan 2026 runs from 13 August to 11 September, and the Mondays are 17, 24 and 31 August and 7 September. The festivals fall on the same days in both systems. Only the month boundaries differ.
