Remedies for My Weakest Planet

Your weakest planet is decided by four facts that can be computed from your birth details, and the remedy that follows from it is decided by a fifth fact that most articles never mention. The four are the sign a planet sits in, how close it sits to the Sun, which house it stands in, and whether one of the classical afflictions rests on it. The fifth is which houses that planet rules from your rising sign, and it decides whether the correct move is to feed the planet or to settle it. Get the fifth one wrong and the remedy pushes in the wrong direction, which is why almost every article about a gemstone ends by telling you to have your chart checked first.

A graha is one of the nine bodies Vedic astrology reads: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. All nine are covered here, which is why this page stands in for the twenty-three pages on this site that each described one bead or one stone. Those pages are still linked below, and once you know which graha is yours the detail page for its object is worth reading. What none of them could do was tell you which graha is yours.

What "weakest" actually means, in four computed facts

The word carries no meaning until you say which measurement you mean, so here are the four this reading uses, each with what it is and how common it is.

Debilitation. Every planet has one sign where the tradition places it at its lowest strength, and the opposite sign where it is at its highest. Sitting in the low sign is called being debilitated, which is the weakest a planet can be by sign alone, and sitting in the high one is called being exalted, which is the strongest. Debilitation does not mean the planet fails. The classical reading is that what it governs takes longer to come good than the person's actual capacity suggests, so a debilitated Mercury describes someone whose clarity of speech arrives after a long stretch of feeling unheard, rather than someone who cannot speak.

Debilitation means the sign where the tradition rates a planet weakest.

Combustion. A planet sitting close to the Sun in the sky is called combust, meaning burnt, and the reading is that what it carries gets easily overshadowed by ego, pressure or a loud room. The distance that counts differs by planet. These are the orbs this reading uses, measured as the angular gap from the Sun in your own birth chart.

Mercury is combust in nearly half of all charts because Mercury never gets far from the Sun as seen from Earth. Across 4,262 charts cast every third day from 1970 to 2005, the widest gap between Mercury and the Sun was 27.8 degrees, so a 14 degree orb catches a large share of that range by construction. A combust Mercury is an ordinary finding rather than a rare misfortune, and anyone selling you an expensive answer to it is selling you the base rate.

A difficult house. The twelve houses are counted from your rising sign, and three of them are grouped together as the hard ones: the 6th, the house of struggle and rivals; the 8th, the house of interruption and hidden things; and the 12th, the house of loss and solitude. A planet standing in one of them still does its work, but the reading changes. In the 6th, what it carries tends to arrive through contest rather than through ease. In the 8th, it moves in stops and starts and often arrives later than it does for other people. In the 12th, it works better away from a crowd and tends to leak when it is spent in public. Across 1,827 charts each graha lands in one of those three houses about a quarter of the time, which is what three houses out of twelve should produce.

A classical affliction resting on it. Five configurations get checked, and each attaches to a particular graha. Mangal dosha is a Mars placement the texts flag when reading partnership. Kaal Sarp dosha is every planet falling on one side of the Rahu and Ketu axis. Sade Sati is the seven and a half years Saturn spends transiting the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs counted from the Moon in your birth chart. Pitru dosha is the classical signature of unfinished business on the ancestral side, and it attaches to the Sun. Grahan dosha is the Sun or the Moon sitting close to one of the nodes. Here is how often each appeared in the sample, so you can see which of them are common enough to be unremarkable.

Two thirds of charts carry Mangal dosha and half carry Pitru dosha. A finding that common is a description rather than a verdict, and it deserves a practice rather than a fright.

What is deliberately not counted as weakness

Retrogression is left out. A planet is retrograde, meaning it appears to move backward against the stars for a stretch, and the classical reading is that it works by going back over ground rather than in a straight line. That is a manner of working rather than a handicap, so it is recorded in the chart and it does not push a planet up the weakness ranking. It also cannot mean anything for four of the nine bodies: the Sun and the Moon never turn back, and Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde by definition, so reporting it for any of those four would be printing a fact of arithmetic as though it were a finding about you.

The two nodes carry no dignity either, where dignity is the strength grade a planet takes from the sign it sits in. Schools disagree about where Rahu and Ketu are exalted and debilitated, and a blank invites invention, so no exaltation or debilitation is asserted for either. They are read by house and by affliction only.

Exaltation means the sign where the tradition rates a planet strongest.

Why "my weakest planet" is a ranking question rather than a detection question

Most charts have several planets carrying something. Across the 1,827 sampled charts, the average number of grahas carrying at least one of the four impairments is 4.41 out of nine, and only 4 charts out of 1,827 had none at all.

So the honest question is not whether anything is wrong, because something almost always is. The question is which one to work on first. The ranking used here adds up what each graha carries: being debilitated counts heaviest, then combustion, then standing in the 6th, 8th or 12th, then an affliction resting on it. It then adds whether you are currently living through that planet's own long period, because a planet that rules the years you are actually in has first claim on your attention even when it is not the most damaged one in the chart.

That last term is why two people with identical placements can get different first planets at different ages, and why your answer changes across your life rather than being fixed at birth. It is also the reason a page cannot hand you the answer without your birth details.

Which planet comes out on top, across 1,827 charts

Mars leads because Mangal dosha is present in two thirds of charts and adds to Mars every time. Mercury is second because it is combust in 44% of charts. Neither number says that Mars and Mercury are fragile planets; both are the arithmetic of how often their particular flag fires. Rahu and Ketu come last because they carry no dignity, so only house placement and Kaal Sarp dosha can lift them.

Here is what each graha carries as a share of the same 1,827 charts, so the ranking above can be checked against its inputs.

Debilitation sits near 8% for every planet because it needs one sign out of twelve, and one twelfth is 8.33%. The Sun is the only body with no combustion row, because combustion is measured from the Sun and a body cannot be burnt by itself.

The step nearly every remedy article skips: strengthen, or settle

Two charts can have the same planet in the same weak condition and need opposite treatment. What separates them is which houses that planet rules from the rising sign, called the lagna, which is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born.

Classical practice sorts every planet into three functional roles by lordship alone.

• A planet ruling the 1st, the 5th or the 9th house from your lagna is a functional benefic. Feeding it feeds a part of life the tradition treats as favourable, so strengthening is permitted: repetition of its mantra, and a gemstone if you want one.
• A planet ruling both an angle (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) and a trine (the 1st, 5th or 9th) is called a yogakaraka, the strongest functional benefic a chart can hold. Six of the twelve rising signs have one.
• A planet ruling the 6th or the 8th house is a functional malefic. The classical instruction is to settle it rather than feed it, because a gemstone strengthens the planet, and strengthening the lord of a difficult house strengthens the difficulty. This is the single most common way a gemstone recommendation goes wrong.
• Everything else is neutral, which is most of most charts and is worth saying plainly instead of dressing up.

Most planets rule two signs, so a planet can hold one good lordship and one difficult one at the same time. The order of precedence settles it, and it runs the same way every time. A yogakaraka claim beats everything. Failing that, ruling the 1st, 5th or 9th beats ruling the 6th or 8th, because the tradition treats the lordship of the rising sign and the trines as the stronger claim. Only when neither of those applies does the 6th or 8th lordship decide, and if none of the five houses is involved the planet is neutral. So Jupiter ruling your 5th and your 8th comes out benefic, and Venus ruling your 1st and your 6th comes out benefic, while Saturn ruling your 6th and your 7th comes out malefic, because the 7th is an angle and angles on their own confer nothing here.

The nodes never rule a sign, so no rule of lordship reaches them at all. That matters because "strengthen your Rahu" is the sentence that sells the most useless jewellery in this field, and there is no classical rule that licenses it.

The same planet, judged by all twelve rising signs

Lordship is fixed arithmetic, so the whole table can be printed once. Each of the seven star-planets is a functional malefic for exactly two of the twelve rising signs, and a functional benefic for three or six of them depending on whether it rules one sign or two. The Sun and the Moon rule one sign each, so they rule the 6th or the 8th for exactly those two rising signs. The other five rule two signs each, so they rule the 6th or the 8th for four rising signs, and in two of those four they also rule the 1st, the 5th or the 9th, where the trine claim wins and the planet comes out benefic anyway.

Read the table by planet and the inversion is obvious. Jupiter, the planet almost every article treats as universally kind, rules the 6th for a Libra rising and the 8th for a Taurus rising, so for two of the twelve rising signs a weak Jupiter is settled rather than fed and yellow sapphire is refused. Saturn, the planet almost every article treats as harsh, is the yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra, which makes blue sapphire one of the two best stones those charts can wear. Venus is refused for Sagittarius and Pisces rising. The Sun is refused for Capricorn and Pisces.

The Sun and the Moon are benefic for only three signs each because each rules a single sign, while the other five rule two.

How the split lands in practice

Across the 1,827 charts, the treatment for the top-ranked planet came out as follows.

Roughly one chart in five needs the opposite of what a general article would tell it to do. That is not a small edge case, and the reader has no way of knowing which side they are on without their rising sign.

What this does to the gemstone question

The most common way people arrive at this subject is backwards: they hear a planet is weak, they look up its stone, they buy it. Here is what the classical rule actually returns when it is applied to the weakest planet in each of 1,827 charts.

The stone named for your weakest planet is permitted in fewer than three charts in ten. In 16.37% of charts the rule refuses it outright, in another 2.63% the weakest planet is a node and no rule of lordship reaches its stone at all, and in the majority of charts the rule simply has nothing to say, because a gemstone prescription is a rule about which houses a planet rules from your rising sign, and a planet that rules neither a good house nor a difficult one falls outside it. Half the time the honest answer is that no stone is indicated, which is a real answer and more useful than a recommendation invented to fill the row.

Broken out by planet, so you can see where the risk concentrates:

Jupiter is the row to look at. When Jupiter is the weakest planet, yellow sapphire is permitted in 34 charts and refused in 32, which is close to a coin flip. Saturn runs the other way from its reputation: when Saturn is the weakest planet, blue sapphire is permitted more than twice as often as it is refused, because Saturn is the yogakaraka for two rising signs and a benefic for six.

Two stones sit outside the rule altogether. Hessonite for Rahu and cat's eye for Ketu are the two the tradition is most cautious about, and no rule of lordship applies to them, because the nodes rule no sign. In all 48 charts where a node came out weakest, the answer was to settle it with practice and to leave the stone alone.

Same date, same city, twelve births

If the answer really depends on birth time, it should change within a single day, and it does. Here are twelve births on 1 January 1985 in New Delhi, two hours apart, with nothing changed but the clock.

Four different planets come out weakest across one day in one city. Mars at 01:00 is settled and Mars at 05:00 is fed, because Virgo rising puts Mars over the 8th house and Scorpio rising puts Mars over the 1st. Jupiter at 07:00 gets a permitted yellow sapphire and Jupiter at 15:00 gets a refusal, because Taurus rising puts Jupiter over the 8th.

The general case was measured the same way: 378 dates, one every 29 days from 1975 to 2005, twelve births each at 01:00 through 23:00 in New Delhi.

Only 70 dates out of 378 give the same answer whatever hour you were born. On 377 of 378 dates the gemstone verdict changes with the clock. Anyone who tells you your remedy without asking for your birth time is answering a different question from the one you asked.

One practical note on birth time. If you do not have it, the reading is still worth doing: the houses are then counted from your Moon sign instead of the rising sign, which is the standard fallback. The mantra, the giving, the fasting and the service do not depend on birth time at all. Only the gemstone verdict gets softer, because that is the one part of the answer that is built on the rising sign.

The nine grahas, and everything traditionally assigned to each

Here is the whole assignment table in one place, which is what the twenty-three separate object pages were carrying between them. The free practices come first because the classical texts weight repetition, giving, fasting and service above anything a person can wear, and because that ordering happens to be the one nobody can sell you.

Repeat the mantra 108 times a day, which is the count a person can actually keep. The fuller classical course is a fixed total spread over forty days, called the sankhya, and it differs by graha: Sun 7,000, Moon 11,000, Mars 10,000, Mercury 9,000, Jupiter 19,000, Venus 16,000, Saturn 23,000, Rahu 18,000, Ketu 7,000. Treat the sankhya as the fuller version rather than the requirement.

The seed mantra, called the beej mantra, is the more intensive form of the same practice.

Then the three practices that cost the price of a meal: what to give away, what to fast, and who to serve.

And the conduct attached to each, which the tradition treats as doing more than the rest of the list combined.

The objects, and the pages that describe each one

The bead and the stone come last on purpose. A rudraksha is a seed with a number of natural grooves running down it, and the count of grooves is called the mukhi, meaning faces. One bead is keyed to each graha. Beads are the cheap end of the ornament tier and carry none of the lordship risk a gemstone does, which is why they come after the free practices and last on this page.

Four of the fourteen beads are missing from that table because they are not keyed to a single graha. The 10 Mukhi is described on its own page as connected with all nine grahas together rather than one ruler, and the 11 Mukhi as connected with overall vitality rather than a single planet. The 13 Mukhi is described there as ruled by Venus and the 14 Mukhi as linked to Saturn and Mars together. Since no single-graha rule reaches those four, no prescription for them appears here, and their own pages are the right place to read about them.

Three worked charts, computed end to end

Chart A: the first planet is the one the current years run on

1 January 1985, 21:15, New Delhi. Rising sign Leo. Moon in Aries.

Afflictions present: Mangal dosha (high), Kaal Sarp dosha (medium), Sade Sati (rising).

The ranking puts Mars first, then Jupiter, then the Sun. Mars is not debilitated, not combust and not in a difficult house. It reaches the top for two other reasons: the Mangal dosha in this chart rests on Mars, and this person is living through Mars's own long period, which runs 1 March 2020 to 2 March 2027. So the first planet here is not the most damaged one, it is the one the current years are made of.

Then comes the part a general article cannot reach. Mars rules the 4th and the 9th from a Leo rising, which makes it the yogakaraka, the single strongest functional benefic this chart can have. So the treatment is to strengthen: Om Mangalaya Namaha 108 times on a Tuesday, early in the morning, out loud rather than under the breath, red lentils or jaggery given away on the same day, and one argument left unwon. Red coral is classically permitted here, and so is ruby, because the Sun rules the Leo rising itself and its stone strengthens the whole self rather than one department of life.

Blue sapphire is refused in this chart, and Saturn is the reason. Saturn rules the 6th house from Leo, so it is a functional malefic here whatever else it is doing, and this chart is in Sade Sati, which is exactly the state that sends people looking for a Saturn stone. Feeding the lord of the 6th during a heavy Saturn passage strengthens the difficulty. Saturn's practice here is the free one: the Saturday mantra, black sesame or a blanket given away, serving someone the world does not thank, and finishing the dull task that has been carried for weeks.

The full sequence of long periods for this chart, with each lord and its dates:

Mars has about six months left as the ruling period as of August 2026, with the Moon's sub-period inside it from 1 August 2026 to 2 March 2027. Then Rahu takes over for eighteen years, and the first planet in this chart changes with it. A remedy chosen for the right planet in 2026 is the wrong first choice by 2028, which is why this is a reading with a date on it rather than a fact about a person.

Chart B: the great benefic, refused

6 June 1985, 16:45, New Delhi. Rising sign Libra. Moon in Capricorn.

Afflictions present: none of the five that get checked.

The ranking puts Jupiter first, then Mercury, then Mars. Jupiter is in Capricorn, its sign of debilitation, and this person is living through Jupiter's own sixteen-year period, from 25 March 2022 to 25 March 2038. Both terms point the same way, so Jupiter is unambiguously the planet this chart is asking about.

The obvious move would be a yellow sapphire, and it is the wrong move. Jupiter rules the 3rd and the 6th from a Libra rising, which makes it a functional malefic in this chart, and the 6th is one of the two houses the texts warn against strengthening. So the verdict here is not advised, and the treatment is to settle Jupiter rather than feed it: Om Gurave Namaha on a Thursday, turmeric or chana dal or a book given away, teaching or mentoring with no fee and no audience, and keeping the promise to a teacher or a parent that has been quietly slipping. All of it costs nothing, and it is what the classical rule actually asks for on this placement.

There is a second thing worth noticing. Saturn in this chart is exalted, in the rising sign itself, and is the yogakaraka for Libra, ruling both the 4th and the 5th. So the stone this chart is permitted is blue sapphire, the one with the fiercest reputation and the most warnings attached, alongside diamond for Venus, which rules the Libra rising itself. A reader who went by reputation alone would have bought the stone that is refused and avoided the one that is permitted.

More than eleven of those sixteen Jupiter years are still ahead as of August 2026, with Saturn's sub-period running inside them until 24 November 2026. A settling practice kept across a period that long is worth more than an ornament bought in a bad week, which is the least glamorous and most useful thing the tradition has to say on this subject.

Chart C: a node comes first, and no stone is on the table

Afflictions present: Mangal dosha (cancelled), Kaal Sarp dosha (high).

The ranking puts Rahu first, then Mercury, then Mars. Rahu stands in the 12th house, the house of loss and solitude, the Kaal Sarp dosha in this chart rests on Rahu, and this person is living through Rahu's eighteen-year period, which ends on 24 December 2026.

Rahu rules no sign, so no rule of lordship can license strengthening it, and hessonite is not on the table. The only classical direction here is to settle: Om Rahave Namaha at dusk in a quiet room on a Saturday, blankets or mustard oil or food given to people outside the usual circle, time given to people the family would not naturally mix with, and one shortcut refused in full knowledge that it would probably have worked. The 8 Mukhi bead is the object traditionally associated with Rahu and it carries none of the lordship risk a stone does.

The Mangal dosha here shows as cancelled, which is the one piece of good news most readers arrive frightened of missing. The same texts that flag the placement also say what annuls it, this chart meets that condition, and nothing about it needs to be treated as live.

Four months of Rahu remain as of August 2026, and then sixteen years of Jupiter begin. Jupiter rules the 8th house from a Taurus rising, which makes it a functional malefic in this chart, so the settling practice that suits Rahu now suits Jupiter next, and yellow sapphire will be refused then for the same reason hessonite is refused now.

Why the period you are in changes the answer

Vimshottari is the 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods Vedic astrology uses, and which period you start life in is set by the exact position of the Moon at your birth. The long period is called the mahadasha and it runs anywhere from six years to twenty; the sub-period sitting inside it is called the antardasha, which runs anywhere from a few months to a couple of years.

A planet ruling the years you are living through has a claim on your attention that a merely damaged planet does not, because that is what your current chapter is made of. It is also why the same person needs a different first practice at 25 and at 45, and why a remedy that helped for a decade can stop being the first thing to do without anything having gone wrong.

The practical instruction the tradition gives for a long period is not dramatic: keep the practice of the period lord going through it. In Chart B that means a Jupiter practice held for more than eleven more years, which is a different kind of commitment from buying an object once.
