What is a life stone vs a fortune stone?
The life stone is the gem of your Lagna lord — the planet ruling your ascendant — and it is safe to wear lifelong because it strengthens your whole self. The fortune stone is the gem of your yogakaraka (a planet ruling both an angle and a trine) or, if you have none, your 9th lord of fortune. It is worn to lift luck and success.
Why do some gems come with a caution?
In your chart every planet has a functional nature set by the houses it rules. The lords of the 6th and 8th are functional malefics, so wearing their gems can strengthen difficulty rather than help. This calculator flags those so you do not wear a beautiful stone that quietly works against you.
What is a yogakaraka?
A yogakaraka is a single planet that rules both a kendra (angle: 1, 4, 7, 10) and a trikona (trine: 5, 9) from your ascendant. It is the most powerful benefic for that lagna. Taurus and Libra have Saturn, Cancer and Leo have Mars, Capricorn and Aquarius have Venus. Its gem is a superb fortune stone.
Do I need my birth time?
For the true recommendation, yes — functional nature is measured from your Lagna, which needs your birth time. Without it, the calculator uses your Moon sign as the Chandra lagna, which is a reasonable stand-in but less precise. Blue Sapphire especially should always be test-worn first.
