IVF Cycle Timing and What a Chart Can Say About It

The question almost always arrives with a date attached. Someone has a transfer booked for October and a fallback slot in January, or the clinic has offered two cycles and asked which one to plan around, and the person wants to know whether their chart prefers one of them. That is a narrower question than "will this work", and the narrower one is the question a chart is in a position to answer.

What follows separates the layers of a Vedic chart that can differ between two months from the layers that cannot, then measures how often each one actually changes the answer. Every number was computed by AstroMedha's own engine on 26 August 2026 against 20,000 charts and against four worked examples, and the method sits next to each figure so you can reproduce it or reject it.

Start with what belongs to your doctor

A chart cannot tell you whether an embryo will implant. It has no access to your ovarian reserve, your embryo grades, your lining thickness, your partner's results, your age-adjusted odds, or anything else the clinic is actually working from. Those numbers decide the medicine and a chart cannot see any of them.

The engine that computes the timing on this page carries a sentence it attaches to every fertility payload, and it is worth reading in full because it is also the rule this page follows:

What follows is about timing, not about medicine. It cannot diagnose anything, it cannot tell you whether conception is possible, and it is never a reason to start, stop, delay or change any treatment. Those decisions belong with your doctor, who can see what a chart cannot.

The practical version is short. If your clinic has told you that a cycle should happen now, it should happen now. Ovarian reserve declines on its own schedule and no transit reverses that. A chart is useful for the choices your doctor has already told you are yours to make, which is usually the choice between two clinically equivalent slots, or the question of what to do with the months between cycles. Reading it as permission or refusal is a misuse of it, and it is the misuse this subject invites.

With that fixed, here is what the chart is genuinely doing when it prefers one month over another.

Three layers move, and two do not

When you put two candidate months side by side, five things about your chart get consulted. Three of them can differ between the months and two of them cannot, and knowing which is which is most of the skill.

The layers that move:

1. Which planetary period you are in. Vimshottari, the Vedic timing system this rests on, is a fixed 120-year sequence in which each planet governs one long, continuous chapter of a life, called a mahadasha. Jupiter's chapter runs 16 years, Saturn's 19, the Moon's 10, and so on. Inside each chapter, every planet in turn governs a shorter sub-chapter, the antardasha, which is the sub-period that carries most of the timing weight. Which planet you start life on, and therefore when each turn arrives, is set by the exact degree your Moon occupied at birth.

2. Which sub-period sits inside that one. The pratyantar, which is the sub-period one level below the antardasha, divides each antardasha the same way an antardasha divides a mahadasha. It moves on a scale of weeks rather than years, and it is the finest dasha layer there is any point consulting for a question about one month against another.

3. Where Jupiter and Saturn stand, relative to your 5th house. The 5th house, the putra bhava, is the house Vedic astrology assigns to children. Jupiter is the natural significator for children in any chart, so classical practice treats Jupiter arriving on that house as the trigger, and Saturn arriving on it as the slower, heavier counterweight. Both planets move slowly enough that their position is a real distinguishing feature between two months a quarter apart, and fast enough that it changes several times inside any treatment year.

Significator means the planet that stands for a given subject in every chart.

The layers that do not move:

4. Your 5th house, its ruler, and what sits in it. These are set at birth. The sign on your 5th house, the planet that rules that sign, that planet's condition and house, and any planet standing in the 5th are the same in October as in January. They decide how the whole subject reads in your chart and they decide nothing at all about which month.

5. Your D-7 Saptamsha. The Saptamsha is a divisional chart, which is a second wheel derived arithmetically from the first, and the one the tradition assigns to progeny specifically. It is also fixed at birth. Its job here is to qualify the reading, not to time it.

So when someone says their chart favours one month, the claim can only be resting on layers 1, 2 and 3. If it is resting on layers 4 and 5, the same claim would apply to every month of their life, which is a way of saying it is not a claim about a month.

How often does the month actually matter?

This is measurable rather than arguable, so we measured it.

The engine cast 20,000 charts with birth dates drawn uniformly from 1988 to 2002, birth times drawn uniformly across the clock, all at New Delhi. For each chart it computed the mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantar running on the 15th of every month from September 2026 to December 2027, sixteen candidate months in all, and scored each month against that chart's own fertility calendar the way the paid report does.

The mahadasha and antardasha pair is a slow layer, and it is the one people quote. Here is how often two candidate months share it:

The reason is that an antardasha is long. Across the 397,967 antardashas these 20,000 charts run between ages 20 and 48, the median one lasts 404 days, the mean 514, the shortest tenth under 149 days and the longest tenth over 986. A sub-period that averages well past a year cannot distinguish October from November, and across the whole sixteen-month horizon 31.64% of charts never change antardasha at all, while 53.85% change exactly once.

The pratyantar is the fast layer. A separate draw of 3,000 charts gives 542,412 pratyantars inside the same age span, and their median length is 51 days, mean 60.8, with the shortest tenth under 17 days. Back in the 20,000-chart sample, two months one apart share the pratyantar only 55.41% of the time, three months apart 15.73%, and six months apart 0.09%. Inside the single month of October 2026, the pratyantar changes for 43.88% of charts, so for close to half of people even "early October" and "late October" are two different answers on that layer.

The transit layer moves on its own schedule and takes no notice of your dasha. Jupiter is in Cancer on 15 October 2026 and in Leo on 15 January 2027, and those two signs touch two completely disjoint sets of 5th houses. Across the 20,000 charts, Jupiter occupies or aspects the natal 5th house for 34.22% of them in October 2026 and for 34.95% in January 2027, and because the two sets do not overlap, the answer flips for 69.17% of all charts between the two months.

Putting the three together for that specific pair of months:

The line worth holding on to is the combination. For 83.13% of charts the mahadasha and antardasha are identical in both months, and among exactly those charts Jupiter's relation to the 5th house is different for 69.18%. So for most people the layer that gets quoted says nothing about the choice, and the layer that decides it is the one that gets left out.

That has a direct consequence for how to read an answer you are given. If someone tells you October is better than January and the reason they offer is your mahadasha, ask what changed, because five times in six nothing did.

The Jupiter and Saturn calendar, 2026 to 2030

The ingress dates below are the same for everyone on Earth. What differs from person to person is which house of your chart each of these signs happens to be, and that depends on your rising sign, which the twelve-row table further down resolves. The ingress dates below were found by day-resolution binary search and cross-checked against an independent daily scan of the ephemeris; the two agree on every date.

Jupiter. It spends roughly a year in a sign and turns retrograde, meaning it appears from Earth to move backwards through the zodiac, for about four months of every year, which is why the same sign can appear twice in this table. The dignity column says how well placed the planet is by sign: exalted, meaning placed in the sign classical Vedic astrology treats as its strongest, and debilitated, meaning placed in the sign opposite that one and therefore at its weakest. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and Saturn is debilitated in Aries, and both of those fall inside the next four years.

Cancer is the only sign in which Jupiter is exalted, and that is the fact behind a great many October 2026 questions. Jupiter has been there since 2 June 2026, it leaves on 31 October 2026, and it comes back on 25 January 2027 for five more months. After 26 June 2027 it does not return to Cancer until September 2037, so the two windows currently in front of anyone are the only ones this decade.

Jupiter's forward motion stops in the second week of December 2026. The engine reads it as stationary from 9 December, retrograde from 17 December at 2.76 degrees of Leo, and direct again from 17 April 2027 at 22.78 degrees of Cancer. A transfer in mid-January 2027 lands with Jupiter retrograde in the last degree of Leo, ten days from stepping back into Cancer, which is a different picture from one in mid-February 2027 with Jupiter already back in Cancer.

Saturn. It holds a sign for roughly two and a half years.

Saturn spends most of the next four years in Aries, where it is at its weakest by sign, so a Saturn contact with your 5th house from mid-2027 onward is a contact made by a planet in poor condition. Saturn turned retrograde on 30 July 2026 at 20.51 degrees of Pisces and turns direct again on 14 December 2026 at 13.71 degrees, so anyone weighing months across that winter has Saturn changing direction inside the window even though it does not change sign.

One more dated movement sits between October 2026 and January 2027 and is easy to miss: the lunar nodes change signs on 5 December 2026, Rahu moving from Aquarius into Capricorn and Ketu from Leo into Cancer. If Cancer is your 5th house, Ketu joins it that day and stays until 24 June 2028, which is a real change to the picture and one no dasha calculation will show you.

Which rising signs have Jupiter or Saturn on the 5th, and when

To use the calendar above you need one thing about yourself: your lagna, which is the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It sets the whole house grid, so it decides which sign is your 5th house. Your 5th house is the fifth sign counting from your rising sign, counting your rising sign as one.

A planet touches a house either by standing in it or by aspecting it, and in this system a planet's gaze is directional rather than symmetric. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs counted forward from itself. Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th. Those two lines are the engine's own aspect table, the one every AstroMedha surface renders from, and Jupiter has no 11th aspect however often that gets written down.

Applying that table to the calendar gives every rising sign its own answer:

Two rows answer the October 2026 question on their own. If you have Pisces rising, Jupiter is standing in your 5th house right now and exalted while it does so, it leaves on 31 October 2026, it comes back on 25 January 2027 and holds until 26 June 2027, and after that date it makes no contact with your 5th house again until 25 January 2030. Whichever way you decide, the two windows in front of you are the last of their kind for two years and seven months.

If you have Aquarius rising, Jupiter makes no contact with your 5th house until 26 December 2028, and the table says the same thing about Saturn until 3 June 2027. That is worth knowing early, because it means no amount of waiting through 2027 buys you a transit, and your timing question is a dasha question instead.

When both slow planets reach your 5th at once

Classical practice pays particular attention to Jupiter and Saturn touching the same house at the same time, and AstroMedha's engine implements exactly that pairing for the 10th house of work under the name double transit. The same arithmetic applied to the 5th house gives the following, using the engine's own aspect table and its own ingress dates.

Aries rising gets no such window at all before mid-2030, which is the normal state rather than a fault in that chart, because Jupiter and Saturn take about twenty years to repeat their cycle against each other. The 25 windows in the table are also short: median 89 days, longest 155, shortest 5. Anyone whose window is open is looking at a season rather than a year, and the 5-day entry against Virgo is two ingress dates falling five days apart rather than anything to plan around.

Take this as one input among the five layers rather than as the answer. A double window landing inside a quiet dasha is a different proposition from one landing inside a supported dasha, and the four charts below show what that difference looks like in practice.

Four charts, October 2026 and January 2027 side by side

Every chart here was computed from the birth moment named. Nothing is illustrative and you can reproduce any row by entering that date, time and place into the free kundli tool. The band on each window is AstroMedha's own fertility score, and it ranks a window against the rest of that same chart's calendar from age 20 to 48. It is never a comparison between one person and another and it is never a probability.

Chart 1: the two months land on opposite sides of a mahadasha change

1 December 1988, 14:33 IST, Kochi. Pisces rising at 20.93 degrees, Moon in Leo at 16.69 degrees, in Purva Phalguni. A nakshatra, meaning one of the 27 lunar mansions the zodiac is divided into, is the unit that decides where your dasha sequence starts, which is why the Moon's exact degree is quoted for each chart here.

The 5th house is Cancer, ruled by the Moon, and the Moon sits in Leo in the 6th house. Nothing stands in the 5th. Natal Jupiter is in Taurus in the 3rd house, retrograde, neither in the 5th nor aspecting it. In the D-7 Saptamsha, Jupiter falls in Sagittarius, its own sign, while the Moon as ruler of the 5th falls in Scorpio, where it is debilitated. Three planets earn a fertility signification in this chart: the Moon for ruling the 5th, Jupiter as the general significator, and Mars for ruling the 9th.

Own sign means the sign that planet rules.

This is as clear a separation as the method produces, and it is clear for two independent reasons that happen to agree. The Moon rules this chart's 5th house and the Moon's own sub-period is running until 16 November 2026, which is what puts that window at the top of this chart's own calendar. Jupiter is simultaneously standing in the 5th house and exalted while it does so. On 16 November the mahadasha changes from Mars to Rahu and the calendar goes quiet, and Jupiter has already left Cancer two weeks before that.

The obvious next question is when this chart's calendar next reads supported, and the answer is 29 July 2029, when Rahu's Jupiter sub-period opens and runs to December 2031. That gap is the honest output and it needs the right reading. It says the chart's own strongest window is now rather than in January. It does not say anything about what is possible in between, and treating a quiet window as a closed door is the single most common misreading of this whole method.

One more dated detail belongs to this chart specifically. Ketu enters Cancer on 5 December 2026, which is this chart's 5th house, and stays there until 24 June 2028.

Chart 2: identical dasha in both months, and the transit is the only difference

15 March 1998, 21:13 IST, Ahmedabad. Libra rising at 4.82 degrees, Moon in Virgo at 27.72 degrees in Chitra.

The 5th house is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn, and Saturn sits in Pisces in the 6th house. Jupiter and Ketu both stand in the 5th house, so Jupiter carries three separate reasons to time this subject in this chart and its weight is more than double any other planet's. In the D-7, Saturn as ruler of the 5th falls in Pisces again, the same sign it occupies in the birth chart, which is the marker of a placement holding its shape across both wheels.

This chart is the common case, and it is the reason the measurement section matters. Jupiter's own 16-year mahadasha is running with Mercury's sub-period inside it from July 2025 to October 2027, so the dasha ladder returns the identical answer for both months and for every month in between. Anyone reading only that layer would report the two months as indistinguishable, and they are indistinguishable on that layer.

What separates them is that Jupiter crosses into Leo on 31 October 2026 and from Leo throws its 7th aspect onto Aquarius, which is this chart's 5th house. Underneath that, the pratyantar changes from Mars to Rahu on the way. Neither fact is visible in a mahadasha summary and both are computable to the day.

The follow-up is worth answering rather than leaving open, because it looks like a contradiction. Jupiter is exalted in October and merely neutral in January, so how can January be the month with more contact? Because dignity and contact are two different measurements. Dignity says how well Jupiter can act at all, and contact says whether it is acting on this particular house. A strong planet looking somewhere else does nothing for the 5th house, and this chart has to choose between an exalted Jupiter with no line of sight and a neutral one with a clear one. There is no rule that resolves that for you, and both readings should be on the table when you take the question anywhere.

Chart 3: the sub-period boundary falls three days after the month you named

13 April 1998, 20:05 IST, Chennai. Libra rising at 25.04 degrees, Moon in Libra at 17.93 degrees in Swati.

The 5th house is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn in Pisces in the 6th, with Jupiter, Ketu and Venus all standing in the 5th, so five planets earn a signification here. Jupiter's D-7 sign is Cancer, where Jupiter is exalted, and Saturn as ruler of the 5th holds Pisces across both wheels.

The point of this chart is the date 18 January 2027. Venus's sub-period ends and the Sun's begins, and the two sit in different bands on this chart's own calendar. A transfer on 15 January and a transfer on 15 March are two months apart on a calendar and on opposite sides of a sub-period change in the chart, and that is not a distinction anybody guesses at. It has to be computed from a birth moment.

This chart also shows the limit of the band vocabulary honestly. Its own strongest window does not open until July 2033, which is more than six years away, and the score of 45 on the current window is a rank against that far-off peak rather than a verdict on the present. A chart whose best window is distant is a chart whose calendar is uneven, and it is not a chart with a problem in it. If your own report reads like this one, the useful reading is the ordering of the next few years, not the number.

Chart 4: the answer is neither of the two months you asked about

20 January 1989, 16:37 IST, Ahmedabad. Gemini rising at 15.11 degrees, Moon in Gemini at 19.91 degrees in Ardra.

The 5th house is Libra, ruled by Venus, and Venus sits in Sagittarius in the 7th house. Nothing stands in the 5th and natal Jupiter, in Taurus in the 12th house, neither occupies nor aspects it. Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are the three planets carrying this subject here.

Both named months sit inside the same quiet window and neither has any Jupiter contact, so on this chart the comparison the reader came in with has no answer worth giving. What the chart does have is a date: Venus, which rules the 5th house here, takes over the sub-period on 30 July 2027 and holds it for nearly three years, and Saturn arrives on the 5th house by aspect on 3 June 2027, two months before.

That is a useful answer and it is a difficult one, because a person mid-treatment does not usually have eleven months to spare and should not be asked to find them. Which brings the boundary back into view. This chart's honest output is that the months from now to July 2027 are unremarkable on its own calendar and that a clearer window opens after. What to do with that is a decision for the person and their doctor, and the quiet months are a good time for the tests, the second opinion and the health groundwork that otherwise get done during a window you would rather spend trying.

Why your birth time decides which column you are in

Your 5th house is set by your rising sign, and the rising sign changes about once every two hours. So the transit half of everything above turns on your birth time, and it turns on it hard.

The engine took 800 random birth dates and cast each one twenty-four times, once per hour. On every single one of the 800 dates, all twelve possible 5th houses appear across that one day. On average 8.39 of the 24 hourly births have Jupiter touching their 5th house in October 2026, and the other 15.61 do not. Two babies born in the same hospital on the same date, six hours apart, get opposite answers to the question this page is about.

That has two practical consequences. The first is that a birth time recorded to the nearest hour is worth chasing before anything else, because a birth certificate time settles a question that no amount of interpretation can. The second is that if your birth time is genuinely unknown, the transit layer cannot be computed for you honestly, and the correct response is to say so rather than to substitute the Moon and print the result under the same heading. AstroMedha's fertility engine handles this by reading the houses from the Moon when no birth time is available and marking the payload so the report says which basis it used.

The dasha layers are different. Your mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantar depend on your Moon's exact degree, and the Moon covers about 13 degrees a day, so a birth time wrong by an hour moves the whole ladder by a few days rather than changing which planet is running. Those layers survive an imprecise birth time in a way the house layers do not.

What the D-7 adds, and what it cannot settle

The Saptamsha divides each sign into seven equal parts of a little over 4 degrees 17 minutes, and maps each part onto a sign of a second wheel. For an odd-numbered sign the count starts from the sign itself; for an even-numbered sign it starts from the seventh sign from it. Worked on chart 1: the Moon at 16.69 degrees of Leo falls in the fourth of Leo's seven parts, and Leo is an odd-numbered sign, so the count runs Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, landing that Moon in Scorpio in the D-7.

Across the 20,000 sampled charts, the distribution of conditions in that second wheel comes out close to what chance predicts, which is a useful thing to know before anybody tells you your D-7 is unusual:

Jupiter holds the same sign in the birth chart and in the D-7 in 9.15% of charts, which is close to the one-in-twelve you would expect from an even spread.

Here is the part that matters for a timing decision. The D-7 is computed from your birth moment and never changes, so it is identical in October and in January and it cannot prefer either. Its use is to tell you how strongly to read the timing you get. Chart 3 has an exalted Jupiter in the D-7 and its ruler of the 5th holding its shape across both wheels, so its structure reads as sound while its near-term calendar reads as uneven. Chart 1 splits the other way, with Jupiter in its own sign in the D-7 and the ruler of the 5th debilitated there. Both are real descriptions of a chart and neither is an answer about a month.

If someone hands you a month and gives the D-7 as the reason, that reason cannot be doing the work they say it is.

How to read a quiet month without reading it as bad news

October 2026 comes back quiet for about half the sample. Of the 20,000 charts, 48.81% read quiet that month, 18.18% mixed, 14.70% supported and 18.33% strongly supported. Widening it out, 49.3% of charts have no month at all in the whole sixteen-month horizon that reaches supported.

That number sounds alarming until you know what the band is measuring. The score ranks a window against the highest and lowest scoring windows in that same chart's own fertile span, which runs from age 20 to 48 and holds about twenty windows: 397,967 across the 20,000 charts, so 19.9 each. A sixteen-month slice of a twenty-eight-year calendar has no reason to contain that calendar's peak, and about half of them do not. The band is a statement about where a window sits in your own ordering. It is not a measurement of you and there is no band in the vocabulary that describes a person.

The engine is built this way deliberately, and the reasoning is recorded in its own source. An earlier version scored windows against a fixed absolute scale, and because only a handful of planets ever earn a fertility signification in any one chart, two to four of them in 93.24% of the sampled charts, almost every window in almost every chart came back quiet. On the first real chart it was tested against, all sixteen windows scored quiet including the two the engine then offered as the next ones to watch. A calendar that reads uniformly negative is not a timing tool; it is a verdict wearing a timing tool's clothes, and this subject is the last place to ship one of those.

So what a quiet month is actually good for is worth stating rather than implying. It is the right time for the tests you have been putting off, for a second opinion, for getting weight, thyroid, vitamin D and sleep into the shape your clinic wants them in, and for the paperwork and money and leave that a cycle needs. Arriving at a supported window with all of that already done is a better use of the quiet months than spending the supported window doing them.

Taking this into the room with your doctor

A fair way to hold all of it at once: your clinic decides whether and how, and the chart is at most a tiebreaker on when, applied only to options your clinic has already called equivalent.

If you want to use it that way, three questions are worth having computed before the conversation rather than after. Which sub-periods are running on each date the clinic has offered, and whether a boundary falls between them. Where Jupiter and Saturn are relative to your own 5th house on each of those dates. And when your own calendar next reads supported, so that you know whether waiting costs you two months or two years, because chart 4 shows those are both real answers and they call for opposite decisions.

What is not worth doing is postponing a cycle your doctor has recommended in order to reach a transit. The tables above show how long those waits run. Chart 4's own wait is eleven months, and someone with Aquarius rising is 28 months away from Jupiter's next contact with their 5th house. A wait of that length is a real cost paid in a currency the chart cannot see.
