Do I Have Gajakesari Yoga? Check Your Own Chart
Gajakesari yoga, meaning the elephant-and-lion combination of Jupiter and the Moon, is in your chart if Jupiter sat in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign counted from the sign your Moon was in at the moment you were born. Those four positions are called kendras, which are the angles of a chart: the sign itself, the one three signs later, the one opposite, and the one three signs before. Nothing else is required for the yoga to be present. Everything else that gets written about it describes how well it works, which is a separate question and the one worth your time.
You need three inputs to settle it: your birth date, your birth time, and the timezone that time was recorded in. Your birthplace does not change the answer, because the Moon's sign and Jupiter's sign are the same anywhere on Earth at a given instant. It changes plenty about how the yoga reads, which is a later section.
Count it yourself in four steps
- Find your Moon sign. This is your rashi, the sidereal sign the Moon occupied at your birth. It is not your Sun sign and it is not the Western zodiac sign you may know yourself by. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is offset from the Western one by about 24 degrees, so the two disagree for most people.
- Find Jupiter's sign in the same chart, read from the same sidereal zodiac.
- Count forward from the Moon to Jupiter, counting the Moon's own sign as 1. If the Moon is in Pisces and Jupiter is in Gemini, you count Pisces 1, Aries 2, Taurus 3, Gemini 4. The answer is 4.
- Check the number against 1, 4, 7 and 10. Those four are the kendras. Anything else, and the yoga is not in your chart.
Plain words. Mahadasha means the major chapter, lasting six to twenty years. Antardasha means the sub-period sitting inside a major chapter. Combust means close enough to the Sun that classical practice treats the planet as burnt. Exalted means placed in the sign where the tradition rates a planet strongest. Debilitated means placed in the sign where the tradition rates a planet weakest. Debilitation means the sign where the tradition rates a planet weakest. Retrograde means appearing, from Earth, to move backwards against the stars. Own sign means the sign that planet rules. Dignity means the strength a planet takes from the sign it sits in.
A worked count from a real computed chart: for a birth at 13:40 IST on 27 November 2001 in Bengaluru, the engine puts the Moon at 29.40 degrees of Pisces (in the nakshatra Revati, the 27-part lunar mansion division) and Jupiter at 20.81 degrees of Gemini (in Punarvasu). Pisces to Gemini is four signs counting inclusively, so Gajakesari yoga is present in that chart.
If you already have a kundli printout with sign positions on it, that count is the whole test and takes ten seconds. If you do not, the free kundli tool computes both positions from your birth details with no sign-up, and prints every planet's sign, its house, and the planetary period you are currently in.
Why your birth time decides the answer and your birthplace does not
The Moon covers the whole zodiac in about 27.3 days, which works out to roughly 13 degrees a day, or one full sign every two and a quarter days. Jupiter takes about twelve years for the same circuit and holds a sign for about a year. So the count between them is set almost entirely by where the Moon is, and the Moon moves fast enough that the answer changes inside a single day.
That is measurable rather than theoretical. Across 20,089 dates from 1960 to 2015, we computed the answer at 00:00 and again at 23:59 on the same date. On 5,885 of those dates, 29.29 percent, the two answers disagree. Close to three days in ten, a birth eight hours earlier or later gives the opposite verdict.
Here is one of them, 3 January 1990, hour by hour. Jupiter is in Gemini all day and does not move enough to matter.
| Birth time | Moon | Signs from Moon to Jupiter | Gajakesari yoga |
|---|---|---|---|
| 00:00 | Aquarius 26.83 | 5 | No |
| 02:00 | Aquarius 27.97 | 5 | No |
| 04:00 | Aquarius 29.12 | 5 | No |
| 06:00 | Pisces 0.27 | 4 | Yes |
| 12:00 | Pisces 3.72 | 4 | Yes |
| 18:00 | Pisces 7.18 | 4 | Yes |
| 22:00 | Pisces 9.50 | 4 | Yes |
Two babies born in the same hospital on the same date, one at 4am and one at 8am, get different answers. This is why a page cannot tell you whether you have it and why a two-line summary of the definition leaves you exactly where you started.
Birthplace is a different matter. The Moon's sign and Jupiter's sign are positions against the zodiac as seen from Earth, and they do not shift by more than a rounding error between Kolkata and Kochi at the same instant. What your birthplace does change is your lagna, the rising sign, which is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at your birth and which anchors the twelve houses of the chart. That matters a great deal for reading the yoga, and it is covered below, but it does not decide whether the yoga exists.
The one place birthplace enters even the yes-or-no is the timezone conversion. A time recorded as 06:00 in Delhi and a time recorded as 06:00 in London are five and a half hours apart in real terms, and on a day like 3 January 1990 that gap flips the verdict. Give the tool the time as it was written on the birth record along with the place, and it does the conversion.
How common is Gajakesari yoga? About one chart in three
Gajakesari Yoga is often introduced as rare and royal. It is neither, and the number is easy to compute rather than argue about.
The engine sampled 80,356 birth moments, every six hours from 1 January 1960 to 1 January 2015, and counted the signs from Moon to Jupiter in each. 26,821 of them carry Gajakesari yoga: 33.38 percent.
The reason is arithmetic. Across those 80,356 moments the twelve possible distances come out almost perfectly even, between 8.16 and 8.52 percent each. Four of the twelve are kendras. Four twelfths is a third, and that is what the sample returns.
| Signs from Moon to Jupiter | Share of sampled charts | Kendra |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (same sign) | 8.35% | Yes |
| 2 | 8.44% | |
| 3 | 8.49% | |
| 4 | 8.52% | Yes |
| 5 | 8.47% | |
| 6 | 8.39% | |
| 7 | 8.32% | Yes |
| 8 | 8.23% | |
| 9 | 8.18% | |
| 10 | 8.18% | Yes |
| 11 | 8.16% | |
| 12 | 8.26% |
A second measurement from the same engine says the same thing a different way. Sampling one chart per day at noon across the 7,305 days from 1995 to 2015, the yoga is present on 2,444 of them, 33.46 percent, arriving in 1,076 separate stretches. A stretch runs a median of 2 days, and the longest in those twenty years is 5, because it lasts exactly as long as the Moon stays in whichever sign puts it at a kendra from Jupiter.
So roughly one birth chart in three carries this, and the pattern arrives and departs every couple of days as the Moon moves. That should change what you do with a yes. A placement one person in three shares is a starting condition rather than a verdict on a life, and the useful reading sits in the detail underneath it.
The yes is easy. What shape is yours in?
Two charts can both answer yes and mean very different things, because the rule only asks where Jupiter is relative to the Moon. It says nothing about how well Jupiter is placed to act. Four measurements decide that, and the chart shows each of them separately.
Dignity. A planet is exalted in the sign where classical Vedic astrology holds it strongest, and debilitated in the sign opposite that one. For Jupiter those are Cancer and Capricorn. It also has two signs of its own, Sagittarius and Pisces, where it is comfortable. Among the 26,821 sampled charts that carry the yoga, Jupiter is exalted in 8.68 percent, in its own sign in 17.09 percent, debilitated in 8.91 percent, and in a neutral sign in the remaining 65.33 percent.
Combustion. A planet is combust when it sits so close to the Sun in the chart that classical practice treats what that planet stands for as burnt away. The engine uses an orb of 11 degrees for Jupiter, meaning any separation of 11 degrees or less counts. Among the charts carrying the yoga, Jupiter is combust in 7.16 percent of them.
Motion. Jupiter is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it appears to move backwards through the zodiac. Sampling one chart per day across the same 20,089 dates, Jupiter is retrograde on 28.18 percent of them, which works out to a little over three months in an average year. Within the charts carrying the yoga the figure is 28.16 percent, so the yoga neither favours nor avoids a retrograde Jupiter.
Put dignity and combustion together and you get a spread rather than a prize. Of the 26,821 charts with Gajakesari yoga present, 6,381 (23.79 percent) have Jupiter both dignified and clear of the Sun, and 4,165 (15.53 percent) have Jupiter debilitated or combust. The remaining 60.68 percent sit in a neutral sign with no burn. So roughly one chart in four of the ones that have the yoga has the version people mean when they get excited about it, which is about 8 percent of all charts.
The fourth measurement is house placement from the rising sign, and it deserves its own section because it is the one most often skipped.
Where Jupiter sits from your rising sign is a second question
The yoga is counted from the Moon. Everything about which area of life it touches is counted from the lagna, your rising sign, and those two frames come apart constantly.
Take 29,220 charts cast for New Delhi across 1985 to 2005, at four birth times a day. 9,800 of them carry Gajakesari yoga. Within that group, Jupiter falls in a kendra from the rising sign in 33.98 percent, in a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house, the trines) in 24.77 percent, and in the 6th, 8th or 12th house in 24.86 percent. Those last three are the houses classical practice reads as difficult ground.
So a quarter of the people who have this yoga have its Jupiter sitting in the part of the chart where Jupiter has the hardest time delivering anything. That is not a contradiction in the rule, and the resolution is straightforward: the Moon-relative count decides that the pattern exists, and the lagna-relative house decides where in a life it shows up. A chart can hold both facts at once, and reading only the first one is how a yes gets over-read.
This is also the honest answer to the career question. Jupiter in a kendra from your Moon says nothing about your work by itself. What speaks to work is which house Jupiter occupies from your rising sign, whether that house is the 10th, and what condition Jupiter is in when it gets there. Two of the worked charts below show the two ends of that range.
Six computed charts, all real, all different
Every chart here was computed by the same engine from the birth moment named. Nothing is illustrative-only, and you can reproduce any row by entering that date, time and place into the free kundli tool.
1. Present and strong: 3 February 1994, 21:05 IST, Mumbai
Moon in Libra at 24.85 degrees, Jupiter in Libra at 19.92 degrees. Distance 1, the same sign. Jupiter is direct in motion, in a neutral sign, and 90.9 degrees from the Sun, so nowhere near combustion. The engine labels this one Strong, and the label is doing something specific: it marks the cases where Jupiter and the Moon share a sign, as against the other three kendras which are labelled Notable. Rising sign is Leo, which puts both planets in the 3rd house.
2. Present, and three hours later it would not be: 27 November 2001, 13:40 IST, Bengaluru
Moon in Pisces at 29.40 degrees, with six tenths of a degree of the sign left to cross. Jupiter in Gemini at 20.81 degrees, retrograde, neutral in dignity, 140.5 degrees from the Sun. Distance 4, so the yoga is present. Recompute the same chart three hours later, at 16:40, and the Moon has crossed into Aries at 0.95 degrees. The distance becomes 3, and Gajakesari yoga is gone. This is the case that makes birth-time accuracy worth chasing before anything else.
3. Present with Jupiter debilitated: 27 December 1996, 09:30 IST, Hyderabad
Moon in Cancer at 7.61 degrees, Jupiter in Capricorn at 0.24 degrees. Distance 7, an opposition, so the yoga is present. Capricorn is Jupiter's sign of debilitation. Jupiter is direct and clear of the Sun at 18.4 degrees separation, and sits in the 1st house from a Capricorn rising sign. This chart would show up on any yoga list as a yes, and the yes tells you the pattern is there while the dignity tells you the planet forming it is at its weakest point in the zodiac.
4. Present with Jupiter combust: 30 June 1990, 09:30 IST, Hyderabad
Moon in Virgo at 17.16 degrees, Jupiter in Gemini at 25.39 degrees. Distance 10, a kendra, so present. The Sun is in Gemini at 14.40 degrees, which puts Jupiter exactly 11.0 degrees away, right on the combustion threshold the engine uses for Jupiter. Rising sign is Leo and Jupiter is in the 11th house. This chart is currently running Jupiter's own major period, from 14 February 2020 to 14 February 2036, which makes the state of that Jupiter the most consequential single fact in it.
5. Present, Jupiter exalted, and angular from the rising sign too: 2 September 1990, 09:30 IST, Hyderabad
Moon in Capricorn at 10.05 degrees, Jupiter in Cancer at 9.34 degrees. Distance 7, so present. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, direct, and 36.4 degrees from the Sun. Rising sign is Libra, which places Jupiter in the 10th house, the house of work and public standing. Both frames line up here, and this is the configuration people are picturing when they read that the yoga brings reputation. Note that the engine still labels the yoga Notable rather than Strong, because that label tracks the geometry between Moon and Jupiter rather than Jupiter's condition. The condition is reported alongside it, and on this chart it is the better half of the story.
6. Present, with Jupiter in the 12th from the rising sign: 3 September 1993, 09:30 IST, Hyderabad
Moon in Pisces at 9.52 degrees, Jupiter in Virgo at 21.78 degrees. Distance 7, present. Jupiter is neutral in dignity, direct, and clear of the Sun. Rising sign is Libra and Jupiter falls in the 12th house. Same distance from the Moon as chart 5, same yoga, and a completely different placement in the life.
Two charts that answer no, for contrast
A birth at 04:15 IST on 9 May 1979 in Kolkata has Jupiter exalted in Cancer at 8.30 degrees, sitting in the 4th house from an Aries rising sign, direct and uncombust. It is one of the better-placed Jupiters in this set. The Moon is in Virgo at 16.68 degrees, which makes the distance 11, so there is no Gajakesari yoga in that chart at all.
A birth at 11:30 IST on 18 September 1996 in Hyderabad has Jupiter in its own sign Sagittarius at 14.35 degrees. Moon in Scorpio at 3.69 degrees, distance 2, so again no. Both charts are a useful corrective: the absence of this yoga says nothing about how strong Jupiter is in a chart, and its presence says nothing about that either. They are separate readings.
When does it actually run? Look at your dasha
The question after "do I have it" is usually "then why hasn't it done anything", and Vedic astrology answers that with timing rather than with a stronger claim about the yoga.
Vimshottari dasha is the standard Vedic timing system, a fixed 120-year sequence in which each planet governs one continuous stretch of your life. The long stretch is the mahadasha, or major period, and Jupiter's is 16 years. Inside it, each planet in turn governs a shorter antardasha, or sub-period. Which planet you start life on, and therefore when Jupiter's turn arrives, is set by the exact degree of your Moon at birth, which is another reason your birth time matters.
The consequence is blunt. Jupiter's 16 years may fall in your childhood, in your working life, or past the end of it, and the engine can tell you which from your birth details. Across the worked charts above:
| Chart | Jupiter mahadasha window | Where that falls |
|---|---|---|
| 30 June 1990, Hyderabad | 14 Feb 2020 to 14 Feb 2036 | Running now |
| 2 Sept 1990, Hyderabad | 18 Aug 2025 to 18 Aug 2041 | Running now, and currently in Jupiter's own sub-period until 6 Oct 2027 |
| 3 Feb 1994, Mumbai | 3 Feb 1994 to 12 Apr 2004 | Birth to age 10, finished long ago |
| 27 Nov 2001, Bengaluru | from 2 Sept 2070 | Begins at age 68 |
| 3 Sept 1993, Hyderabad | from 9 Nov 2088 | Begins at age 95 |
Two of those five people are living inside Jupiter's period right now. One passed through the whole of it before turning eleven. Two will not reach it until old age. All five have Gajakesari yoga, and it is the same yoga in each chart. If you want a single reason why the same configuration produces such different life reports, this is it. Your current period is printed on the free kundli result alongside your planets, and the dasha tool lays out the full sequence with dates.
Jupiter's period is not the only time the yoga speaks. Jupiter's sub-periods inside other planets' major periods, and Jupiter's own transits over the relevant signs, both bring it forward. Those are dated per chart rather than general, so they belong in a reading of your chart rather than in a page.
What the classical reading attaches to it
The tradition reads Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon as a marker of wisdom, good standing with others, and the ability to recover, with adversity tending to be followed by return rather than by permanent loss. That is the reading AstroMedha's engine carries for this yoga, and it is stated the same way on every chart it appears in.
Given that a third of all charts carry it, treat that description as a floor rather than a promise. What separates one holder of the yoga from another is the material this page has been measuring: Jupiter's dignity, its distance from the Sun, its house from the rising sign, and whether its period has arrived. Chart 5 below has an exalted Jupiter in the 10th house and is inside its Jupiter mahadasha right now. Chart 6 has a neutral Jupiter in the 12th house whose Jupiter period does not begin until its owner is 95. Both are one line on a yoga list that reads Gajakesari Yoga, present, and they are not the same reading.
Get the answer for your own chart
Step one, no account needed. Enter your birth date, time and place in the free kundli tool. It returns your Moon's sign and degree, Jupiter's sign and degree, both planets' houses when your birth time is known, and your current major and sub-period. Count from the Moon to Jupiter using the four steps at the top of this page. That gives you the yes or no, along with Jupiter's dignity, and it costs nothing and asks for nothing.
Step two, with a free account. The chart dashboard runs the full yoga detection on your chart and names every classical yoga it finds with its strength label, rather than the one you came looking for. The same engine that produced every number on this page produces that list. Chart Chat then answers the follow-ups this page cannot answer for you, because they depend on your chart: which house Jupiter falls in from your rising sign and what that house governs, when your Jupiter periods run and how long, and what your Moon's own condition adds. Create a free account to see it on your chart.
The reason step two needs your birth data rather than a search engine is the same reason step one does. The count is trivial. The inputs are yours.
