Chronic Illness and the Sixth House

At least one natural malefic touches the 6th house in 80.76 percent of birth charts. A natural malefic is one of the five bodies Vedic astrology classes as hard by nature: Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu and the Sun. Touching means either standing in that house or casting an aspect onto it, and the next section but one shows you how to check both for yourself. The number comes from 30,000 charts cast for ten Indian cities, birth dates spread evenly over 1960 to 2005 and birth times spread evenly over the 24 hours. Two of them on the 6th house is more common than none: 29.69 percent against 19.24 percent.

The 6th house is the house Vedic astrology assigns to strain, obstacles and illness. So when an astrologer tells you that your 6th house is afflicted, that sentence is true of four people in five, and it separates you from nobody. It cannot be the reason your condition is yours and not your sister's.

What does differ from one chart to the next is which planet is on it, whether that planet's governing period was running when your condition began, and the date the current one ends. Those are three different questions with three different levels of usefulness, and most of this page is about telling them apart.

Before anything else, what a birth chart is not doing here

What follows is about time. It has nothing to say about your body, and it is not capable of saying anything about your body.

A chart cannot diagnose. It cannot tell you what you have, whether it will resolve, or whether a treatment is working. It is never a reason to start, stop, delay or change anything a doctor has told you to do. If you have noticed something in yourself, book the appointment first and read the rest afterwards.

That instruction is not politeness. It is how AstroMedha's own health engine is built. What counts as a planet being on your 6th house

Two things put a planet in contact with a house, and both are arithmetic you can do yourself.

It occupies the house. This engine uses Whole-Sign houses, meaning each house is exactly one sign. Your 6th house is the sixth sign counting forward from your rising sign, counting your rising sign as one. Any planet standing in that sign occupies your 6th house.

It aspects the house. An aspect, or graha drishti, which means the gaze a planet throws across the chart, reaches other houses from wherever the planet stands. Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself. Four of them reach further, and the tradition does not give them equal reach:

Rahu and Ketu are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. They are not physical bodies, they are always exactly opposite each other, and this engine gives them Jupiter's 5/7/9 reach.

Turn that table around and it becomes a checklist. These are the houses a planet has to be standing in for it to reach your 6th:

Anything in your 12th house reaches your 6th, because the 6th is the seventh house counted from the 12th and every planet has the 7th aspect. That single row accounts for a large share of all the contact there is.

Which sign your 6th house is, and who rules it

The 6th house sign follows from the rising sign with no room for argument, and so does its ruler. The ruler matters more than the sign, because the ruler is a moving body with a governing period attached to it, and the sign is not.

The last column is the part most readings skip, and it changes what the 6th lord's period means. Five planets rule two signs each, so for ten of the twelve rising signs the ruler of your 6th house is also the ruler of something else you care about. If you are Taurus rising, the planet that rules your 6th house is Venus, which also rules your rising sign, so Venus is simultaneously the significator of your body and the ruler of your house of strain. If you are Scorpio rising, Mars does the same job. Only Aquarius and Pisces rising escape it, because the Moon and the Sun rule one sign each.

Significator means the planet that stands for a given subject in every chart.

That matters when someone reads a Venus period to a Taurus native as a period of strain. It is also that person's own rising-sign ruler running, which the same tradition reads as the body's own significator being in charge. The two readings point in opposite directions, from the same placement, in the same period. Whichever one you are given, the other one was available and was not mentioned.

Why four in five charts are afflicted when half of them have an empty 6th house

Four in five and one in two sit oddly together until you separate occupancy from aspect.

The 6th house has no planet in it at all in 49.99 percent of charts. A malefic occupies it in only 35.08 percent. Yet at least one malefic makes contact in 80.76 percent, because aspects do more of the work than occupancy does. Saturn alone reaches the 6th house in 33.79 percent of charts, and it is actually standing in it in 8.59 percent.

The five bodies at the top are the five that have aspects beyond the 7th, and they are all at almost exactly a third. That is not a coincidence and it is not a finding about health. A planet with three aspects plus its own sign touches four signs out of twelve, so it lands on any given house about a third of the time by construction. The four planets with only the 7th aspect touch two signs out of twelve, and sit at almost exactly a sixth.

So the honest reading of "a malefic aspects your 6th house" is that it is close to the base rate of the sky. Jupiter, which nobody would call an affliction, reaches the 6th house at 32.88 percent, statistically indistinguishable from Saturn's 33.79 percent. If the presence of a hard planet were the whole story, the story would be the same for four fifths of the population.

The question everybody asks next, and the honest answer

The next question is always which part of the body. Vedic astrology does have a scheme that assigns body regions to signs, and you will find it repeated on almost every page that discusses this subject.

AstroMedha's engine does not have that table, and the refusal is deliberate rather than an omission. It is written into the health module: astrology does assign body parts to signs, and this product does not repeat it, because a reader cannot unread a sentence about their own heart. A product note asking for a third prescription that would name which body system to watch was refused for the same reason, and the note is still in the file recording that the safety rule outranked the product request.

So there is no computed body-region claim to give you, and inventing one from outside the engine would break the rule this entire page is written under. What the engine assigns instead is a role for each body, in one phrase, and this is what appears wherever a chart reason is shown:

Read Saturn on a 6th house as endurance and duration and the reading becomes usable without becoming a claim about tissue: things in that area of life move slowly, build over weeks rather than after one bad night, and clear over weeks too. That is a statement about pace, it is checkable against your own memory, and it is the same statement the engine makes.

Which period was running when it started

This is the question underneath the verbatim ask that prompted this page: fourteen years of a condition, hospital after hospital, and no explanation. The astrological version is that some planet's governing period was running at the start and is still shaping it.

The period system here is called Vimshottari, meaning the 120-year cycle of planetary periods that Vedic astrology reads timing from. It is fixed at birth by the Moon's position and it never changes. Each of the nine bodies owns a block of years:

Each of those major periods divides into nine sub-periods in the same order and the same proportions, and each sub-period divides again.

Now the number that should change how you hear any explanation of this kind.

For each of the 30,000 charts, take that chart's own afflicters: every natural malefic touching its 6th house, plus its 6th lord. Call that the load set, because it is exactly the set an astrologer would point at. Then measure how much of that person's first sixty years is already covered by a major or sub-period belonging to one of them.

The median is 43.71 percent. In the middle chart of the 30,000, more than two fifths of a life is already inside a period belonging to a planet an astrologer could point at. The mean is 43.65 percent, the tenth percentile is 16.02 and the ninetieth is 70.46. Just under two fifths of charts, 38.99 percent, are more than half covered.

The same thing measured on one date rather than over a lifetime: today, 26 August 2026, a load-set planet is running as the major or sub-period lord for 43.64 percent of those 30,000 people. If you picked a stranger off the street and told them that one of their 6th-house planets is currently in charge, you would be right about as often as a coin.

That is what makes the explanation feel so convincing and so useless at the same time. It is nearly always available. An account of your illness that would have been offered whatever date you named is not an account of your illness.

Why a sub-period explanation is never wrong

Go one level finer and it stops being a claim at all.

Across 1,200 charts measured over ages 18 to 58, major periods run a median of 17.0 years, sub-periods a median of 13.27 months, and sub-sub-periods a median of 51 days. So from any date you choose in an adult life, the nearest boundary is:

70.6 percent of random dates fall within 30 days of a sub-sub-period change, and 31.5 percent fall within 90 days of a sub-period change. Pick the month your symptoms started, look for a period change near it, and one is nearly always there. The finding is not about your chart. It is that there are 729 sub-sub-periods in a 120-year cycle, so one begins on average every two months for everybody alive.

Which gives a rule you can apply to any reading you are given, including one from us. The finer the level a timing claim is pitched at, the less it is claiming. A major-period explanation is a real claim, because major periods are 17 years long and most of a life falls outside any one of them. A sub-sub-period explanation is decoration.

What fourteen years does to the explanation

The person whose question opened this page has had a condition for fourteen years. Run that span, 26 August 2012 to 26 August 2026, against all 30,000 charts.

It crosses a median of 2 major periods. One in 16.96 percent of charts, two in 63.36 percent, three in 19.68 percent. So for four people in five, a fourteen-year condition has already outlived the period that was running when it began.

Of those charts, 47.74 percent have at least one of those major periods belonging to their own load set, and only 8.80 percent have every one of them belonging to it.

Read that carefully, because it cuts both ways. For roughly half of people, no afflicter's major period covers any part of those fourteen years, so the standard explanation is simply unavailable and an astrologer offering it anyway has moved to a finer level without saying so. And for the nine percent whose whole fourteen years sits inside afflicter periods, the explanation covers everything and therefore predicts nothing about when it lifts, because there is no contrast in the data.

The useful case is the middle one: part of the span inside, part outside. That gives a date where something changed, and a date is checkable against your own memory of whether anything did.

Three charts, computed end to end

Dasha means the sequence of planetary chapters a life is divided into.

Chart A: the case the folklore fits

5 April 1993, 12:44, Kochi. Gemini rising at 26.94 degrees, in Punarvasu.

The 6th house is Scorpio, ruled by Mars, and Mars stands in the 1st house. Rahu occupies the 6th. Saturn and Ketu both aspect it, Saturn from the 9th house and Ketu from the 12th. So four planets are in the load set: Mars, Rahu, Saturn and Ketu.

Now count what those four own. Mars 7 years, Rahu 18, Saturn 19, Ketu 7. That is 51 of the 120 years in the cycle, or 42.5 percent, held by afflicters at major-period level alone before a single sub-period is counted.

The ladder this chart actually runs:

On 26 August 2012, this chart was running Mars major period and Venus sub-period, at age 19.4. Mars is the ruler of the 6th house. On 26 August 2026 it is running Rahu major period and Venus sub-period. Rahu is standing in the 6th house.

A reading would say the condition began under the 6th lord and continued under the planet sitting in the 6th, and every word of that is true of this chart. It is also true that afflicters hold 42.5 percent of this chart's entire life at major-period level, so the fit was close to a coin toss twice over rather than a discovery.

What the same computation gives that is not a coin toss is a date. The Rahu major period ends 5 June 2032, and it is followed by sixteen years of Jupiter, which touches nothing in this chart's load set. The last sub-period before the handover is Rahu major with Mars sub-period, 18 May 2031 to 5 June 2032, which is the only stretch in the next six years carrying two load planets at once.

Chart B: the case that falsifies it

30 November 1992, 22:43, Patna. Leo rising at 3.33 degrees, in Magha.

The 6th house is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, and Saturn is standing in it, in its own sign. The Moon is there too. Mars and Ketu both aspect it, and so does Jupiter. On any conventional reading this is a heavily marked 6th house: its own ruler in it, plus two more malefics on it.

The ladder:

The load set here is Saturn, Mars and Ketu, which own 33 of the 120 years. On 26 August 2012 this chart was running Rahu major period and Sun sub-period. Neither is an afflicter. On 26 August 2026 it is running Jupiter major period and Sun sub-period. Neither is an afflicter. Across the whole fourteen years, not one day of a load-set major period.

So for this person the standard explanation does not exist. If they were told in 2012 that their 6th-house Saturn was behind it, the chart says Saturn's period had not started and would not start for another nineteen years. It begins 6 May 2031.

This chart is in the 52 percent, and it is the reason the base rates above are on this page rather than left out. A method that produces an answer for everybody produces a wrong answer for half of them.

Chart C: a clean 6th house, which settles nothing

10 November 1983, 12:51, Bhopal. Capricorn rising at 23.54 degrees, in Dhanishta.

The 6th house is Gemini, ruled by Mercury, and Mercury stands in the 11th. No planet occupies the 6th. No malefic aspects it. The only body reaching it is the Moon. This is the 19.24 percent case, the completely unafflicted 6th house.

It says nothing whatsoever about whether this person is well. It means the chart offers no 6th-house account of illness, which is a fact about the chart and not a fact about the body. Anyone who reads a clean 6th house as a promise of health has read more into it than the chart shows.

What the engine does read here is different in kind. Its load-axis line for this chart says nothing sits in the 6th directly, which it calls quiet rather than empty, and that the house is therefore read through its ruler instead. That ruler sits in the 11th, where other people's pace sets yours and the group decides when. The reading is about how strain arrives, not about whether it will.

The reading that runs the other way

There is a classical pattern most readings of the 6th house leave out, and it reverses the sign of the whole thing.

When the ruler of the 6th, 8th or 12th house sits inside another of those three, the arrangement is called vipareeta, and it is read as difficulty that turns into strength rather than difficulty that accumulates. The engine's phrasing for it is that you are described as someone who recovers from setbacks rather than someone who avoids them.

The rule has an edge case that is easy to get wrong, and the engine's code carries a note about getting it wrong first. The ruler must sit in a different one of the three. A 12th lord standing in the 12th is swakshetra, meaning a planet in its own sign, which is a comfortable placement but not an exchange. An earlier version accepted it, and so printed a finding about all three houses being tangled together off one placement that should never have counted.

By that stricter rule, 41.41 percent of 30,000 charts carry at least one such exchange: one in 33.83 percent, two in 7.06 percent, three in 0.51 percent. Taking the 6th lord alone, it stands in the 8th or 12th in 16.79 percent of charts, and in its own 6th house in a further 8.72 percent which does not count.

Chart B above is the illustration. Its 6th lord, Saturn, is in the 6th, which looks like the strongest possible version of the pattern and is not the pattern at all. What actually fires the marker there is the 12th lord, the Moon, sitting in the 6th. The engine's own output for that chart names the Moon and does not name Saturn.

And on the 6th house itself, the engine's reading for both Chart A and Chart B is the same sentence: a hard marker sitting there is the one people are most often warned about, and it reads the other way round, because resistance is built by using it. Strain and the strength built against it occupy the same house. That is the classical position, not a softening of it.

The dated part, which needs only your rising sign

Everything above is about the chart you were born with. The slow-moving transits are about now, they are the same sky for everybody, and where they land depends only on your rising sign. So this table costs you nothing to read.

Saturn is in Pisces today and reaches Gemini by 2032. Rahu is in Aquarius and moves backwards through the zodiac, with Ketu always exactly opposite. Each planet also goes retrograde, meaning it appears from Earth to move backwards for a while and can slip back into the sign it has just left. Those re-entries are collapsed here into single passages, so each row below is the whole stay rather than one of its halves.

One narrowing to state rather than leave you to notice. Saturn is listed here both when it stands in the 6th house and when it aspects it, but Rahu and Ketu are listed only when they stand in it. That is narrower than the definition of contact this page opened with, and it is a deliberate choice: a node's transit through a house is the reading almost every practitioner works from, while a node's aspect by transit is not, and printing both would have doubled the length of this table with rows most readers would not use. If you do count node aspects, the checklist earlier on this page gives you the rule in one line, because a node reaches your 6th house from your 2nd, 10th or 12th.

Jupiter moves faster and covers the same ground in a different rhythm. Its contact with the 6th house is read as margin and protection rather than as strain, which is why it is worth having both tables in front of you rather than only the first:

A transit window is not a forecast of anything happening in your body. It is a period when the classical reading of your 6th house is being reinforced by the sky rather than left alone. What that is good for is planning. A period with a start date and an end date is one you can schedule around, so the house move, the long trip and the elective procedure go in the months on either side of it rather than in the middle. Why none of the personal half works without a birth time

Everything in the two transit tables needed your rising sign. Everything before them needed the exact minute, and the difference is larger than most people expect.

Take 1,044 dates spread weekly over 1985 to 2004, cast each one at all 24 hourly birth times in Delhi, and look at what moves:

• The 6th house sign takes all twelve values on 100 percent of dates. Not most dates. Every one.
• Its ruler takes all seven possible values on 100 percent of dates, which is every ruler there is, since five planets rule two signs each.
• The set of malefics on the 6th house takes a mean of 8.91 distinct forms within a single date, minimum 7, maximum 11.
• A mean of 4.46 of the 24 hours give a completely clean 6th house, and 97.5 percent of dates contain both an hour with a clean 6th house and an hour with two or more malefics on it.

So on almost any date you can be born, there is an hour that produces "your 6th house is untouched" and another hour that produces "two hard planets sit on it". The birth time is not a refinement here. It is the whole answer.

The period ladder is less brittle but still moves. A 10-minute error shifts it by a median of 37 days, ninetieth percentile 50 days. A 60-minute error shifts it by a median of 230 days, ninetieth percentile 314 days. If you are trying to line a period boundary up against the month something began, a rounded birth time can move the boundary past the month you are testing it against.

If your birth time is genuinely unknown, the standard fallback is to read the houses from the Moon instead of the rising sign, and that is said plainly rather than hidden. It is less precise, and for a question that turns entirely on which sign is sixth, it is a different reading rather than an approximate one.

What your own chart adds that this page cannot

Everything above is the shape of the answer. The answer itself is four things, and all four need your birth moment.

Your own load set, named. Which planets touch your 6th house, whether by occupancy or by aspect, which one rules it, and where that ruler stands. That is a list of two to five bodies out of nine, and it fixes what the rest of the arithmetic is about.

How much of your life those planets already own. Chart A's afflicters hold 42.5 percent of the 120-year cycle at major-period level; Chart B's hold 27.5 percent; Chart C's single afflicter holds 14.2 percent. That one number tells you how much weight any period-based explanation deserves in your case before you hear it, and it is the number nobody gives you.

The period that was running on a date you name. Not a date we choose. You give the month something began, and the ladder says what was running then, at all three levels, with the boundaries either side of it. Whether it lands on one of your own afflicters is then a fact rather than an assertion, and half the time the honest answer will be that it did not.

The date the current one ends. This is the only forward-looking item, and it is arithmetic rather than prophecy. Chart A's Rahu period ends 5 June 2032 and hands over to sixteen years of a planet outside its load set. Chart B's Saturn period begins 6 May 2031. Those dates were fixed at birth and they do not move.

The nearest thing to that on the site which costs nothing is the hard years tool. It runs the same period ladder everything above is built on, but backwards, over stretches you have already lived, and returns dated rows with a claim attached to each one. It exists specifically so you can mark it right or wrong from memory before believing anything about the future, which is the only honest order to do this in. If a tool tells you 2019 was harder than the months either side and you remember 2019 as the easiest year of your life, you have learned something useful about the method in about ninety seconds.

When the same scoring is run forwards instead of backwards, what it produces is a band per window, and the band is relative to your own ladder rather than to other people, because the engine has no population baseline for how hard one life is against another. Chart A's current window runs 17 August to 16 November 2026, comes out restorative, and is described as the fifth-hardest of the six stretches ahead, with the note that recovery is cheapest there and anything postponed should go now. A demanding window carries what it is good for in the same sentence as the demand, by rule, because a date that only tells you to brace is not information you can act on.

What to do with a dated window

A window is worth having only if it changes something, so here is what it is actually for.

Put the appointment before the window, not inside it. If you have been meaning to see someone and one of the marked periods above begins in four months, that start date is a reason to go now rather than a reason to wait and see. The engine's own escalation text takes exactly this position: book the appointment now rather than in a month, and hold the sleep steady while you wait.

Plan the load, not the body. Move the elective commitments, the travel, the house move, out of the marked stretch if they can move. That is what a demanding window is: a claim about how much your months will ask of you, not a claim about what will happen to you.

Check the backward rows before you trust the forward ones. A method that cannot describe a decade you remember has no standing to describe one you have not lived.

Where a doctor and a chart disagree, the doctor wins. They have examined you and the chart has not. That sentence is in the engine's output on the same page as the findings rather than in a footnote, and it belongs at the end of this page for the same reason.
