Vidyarambh marks the beginning of learning, the child''s first letters or the start of a course. Its muhurat favours the planets of intellect and wisdom, Mercury and Jupiter, on learning-friendly nakshatras in the waxing fortnight.

What a learning muhurat looks for

  • Weekday. Wednesday (Mercury) and Thursday (Jupiter) are ideal for a first lesson, with Monday and Friday close behind. Tuesday and Saturday are weaker.
  • Nakshatra. Pushya, Hasta, Shravana, Ashwini, Punarvasu, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Dhanishta, Revati and Mrigashira suit study. Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Moola and Jyeshtha are avoided.
  • Tithi. The waxing fortnight on a favourable tithi supports steady progress. The Rikta tithis and Amavasya are set aside.

Basant Panchami, the festival of Saraswati, is the most popular single day of the year for Vidyarambh, which is why so many schools begin a child''s formal letters around it.
