Choghadiya divides daylight into eight equal windows and the night into eight more, each ruled by a planet and each carrying its own quality. It is the quickest way to find a good hour for everyday work when a full muhurat is not needed, which is why shopkeepers and travellers have used it for centuries.

The eight Choghadiyas

Three are auspicious, three are not, one is movable:

Amrit (Moon): the best window, good for anything.
Shubh (Jupiter): auspicious, good for ceremonies and important work.
Labh (Mercury): gain, good for money, trade and learning.
Char (Venus): movable, neutral, well suited to travel.
Udveg (Sun): agitation, avoided.
Rog (Mars): illness, avoided.
Kaal (Saturn): avoided.

How the timing works

The day''s windows run from sunrise to sunset and the night''s from sunset to the next sunrise, so each window is longer in summer and shorter in winter, and shifts with your city. The sequence starts from the weekday''s ruling planet: Sunday''s daylight opens with Udveg, Monday with Amrit, and so on through the week. Because the windows follow the real sunrise, a printed clock time is only approximate.
