Remote or Onsite? What Your Chart Says About Where You Work

Four houses settle this question, and a Vedic reading takes them in this order:

1. Your 4th house and the planet that owns it. The 4th governs home, roots and the ground you are standing on. Where its owner sits decides whether your base stays put.
2. Your 12th and 9th houses and their owners. The 12th governs residence far from home and what gets left behind. The 9th governs long journeys and learning away from where you started. Between them they decide whether distance is written into the chart at all.
3. Your Moon. The Moon holds the mind's attachment to home, and it has a measurable strength that most readings skip.
4. The period running over you now, and the house its ruling planet stands in. This is what turns a description into a date.
5. Where Saturn and Rahu are sitting relative to your 4th and 10th houses. Saturn puts weight on the base and Rahu unsettles it. Both are in the sky right now at a known degree, and both have known arrival dates for every reader.

The first two are fixed at birth and never change. The last three move, which is why two people with almost the same chart get different advice in the same month.

The one thing it cannot hand you is your own set of five, because those are arithmetic on the minute you were born.

The decision, stated exactly

Two questions from AstroMedha users, copied as they were typed:

"When will I get a job? WFH?"

"Honestly tell me whether setting in foreign land is better for me or staying in my homeland better for me?"

One hundred and sixty-nine people typed a version of the first between 20 April and 25 August 2026, and seventy-nine typed a version of the second. Both are the same question underneath, and it is a question about where the work happens relative to where you live.

That question has three possible answers, and they are worth naming before any astrology, because the three are read differently:

• Onsite and local. You live where you work. Nothing crosses a distance.
• Remote. You live in one place and the work belongs to another. The distance exists, but only the work crosses it.
• Relocate. You move the place you live to where the work is. The distance exists and you cross it yourself.

The middle one is the modern arrival, and it is also the one people are usually holding an offer for. All three are read below from the same four houses.

Where classical texts put "where you live" and "where you work"

Six house significations do the work here, and they are the standard ones:

Here is the honest limit, and the way around it. No classical verse assigns a house to the remote job, for the plain reason that the arrangement did not exist when the verses were written. What the texts do assign, and assign clearly, is the ground you live on to the 4th and the work you do to the 10th. A reading of remote versus onsite is therefore made from how those two houses connect to each other and to the 12th, and not from a thirteenth house invented for the occasion. Every rule quoted below is one of the classical combinations, and where this page extends one to the specific question of remote work, the sentence says so.

The three answers, and which house pattern gives each

The distinction that matters most is between the work moving and the home moving, and classical rules already draw it. Two combinations sit either side of the line:

• The lord of your 10th standing in your 12th. The rule reads: the work itself is what takes you away, so employment abroad rather than a move you make and then look for work.
• The lord of your 4th standing in your 12th. The rule reads: home does not stay where you were born, and this is the combination that speaks to settling rather than visiting.

The first is a job that crosses a distance. The second is a life that crosses one. A third combination sits between them:

• The lord of your 12th standing in your 10th. The rule reads: distance shows up through your profession rather than your private life.

That last one is the closest thing in the classical list to the shape of a remote job, because it puts the distance inside the working day and leaves the home where it is. Treat it as the strongest available reading of remote work rather than as a verse about it, since the verse concerns profession and distance generally.

And if none of the three is present? Then the chart carries no distance signature, which is a real answer rather than a missing one. Chart F below is exactly that case, and what it changes about the advice is worked through in full there.

Input 1: your 4th house, and the planet that owns it

The 4th house is your base. Which sign sits on it depends on your lagna, the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute and place of your birth, and the mapping never varies:

Finding your 4th lord is the first half. The second half is finding where that planet actually stands, because the house it sits in is what the reading is about. A 4th lord sitting in the 4th keeps the base where it is. A 4th lord sitting in the 12th moves it. A 4th lord sitting in the 9th carries it with you.

Three things about that planet are worth checking once you have located it, and each is a plain fact rather than a judgement:

• Which house it occupies, counted from your rising sign. That is the reading.
• How well it landed. Its dignity, meaning how well the sign it fell in suits it, is the second thing to read. A planet in its own sign, meaning the sign it rules, does what it does with more force, and so does a planet that is exalted, meaning it stands in the single sign where it is held to be strongest. A planet that is debilitated, meaning it landed in the sign opposite the one where it is exalted, works uphill.
• Whether it is moving backwards. A planet that is retrograde, meaning it appears to travel backwards against the fixed stars from where we stand, is read as turning its business inward and repeating it rather than as failing at it.

Input 2: the 12th and the 9th, and the 22 combinations the reading tests

The 12th and 9th are the distance houses. Their lordships, again fixed by your rising sign:

Notice that an Aries ascendant has Jupiter owning both the 9th and the 12th. Where one planet carries two of the distance houses, that planet's periods do more of the work in Input 4.

A yoga, meaning a named combination of placements that classical texts treat as a single unit with a single reading, is what turns two lordships into a statement. Twenty-two of them are tested here. Each carries a weight, and the weights sort the combinations in your own chart against each other rather than against anyone else's:

Two more sit in the list at weight 1 and are worth naming because they get misread. Ketu in the 12th reads as a quiet loosening of the hold your birthplace has on you, which is detachment rather than a departure date. The lord of the 12th in the 7th reads as the people you deal with not all being from where you are.

Add the weights of the combinations present and you have a number for how loudly this particular chart speaks about distance. The three charts below score 4, 17 and 0, which is the whole range in miniature.

A combination that is absent is absent. There is no partial credit and no averaging toward a middle. That matters because it is what makes a zero meaningful: Chart F below has none of the twenty-two, and that is information rather than a hole in the reading.

Input 3: your Moon, and how strong it actually is

The Moon carries the mind's attachment to home, which makes it the planet that decides how a move feels rather than whether one happens. Three facts about it are worth having, and only the first is commonly quoted.

Which house it occupies. A Moon in the 12th is one of the twenty-two combinations above and reads as a mind already somewhere else. A Moon in the 4th sits in its own natural territory. The Moon in the 12th house page covers that placement on its own.

Which lunar mansion it fell in. The zodiac is also divided into twenty-seven nakshatras, meaning fixed segments of about 13 degrees 20 minutes each, and the one your Moon occupied at birth sets which planet's chapter your life opened in. That single number drives every date in Input 4.

Its strength by phase, which is a measured quantity. The Moon is held to be strong when it is far from the Sun and weak when it is close, and the measure is the angular separation between the two divided by 180. From 90 to 270 degrees of separation the Moon counts as benefic; below 90 it is weak whether it is waxing or waning. The three charts below measure 0.276, 0.146 and 0.012 on that scale, and the last of the three was born on the new moon itself, with the Sun and Moon 357.8 degrees apart.

So is a weak Moon a reason not to move? No. It says the move will ask more of you emotionally and that the supports you build around it matter more, which is a different claim from the move being wrong. A chart with heavy distance combinations and a weak Moon describes someone likely to go and likely to find it costly, and knowing both halves in advance is more useful than knowing either one.

Input 4: the period running now, and where its ruling planet stands

Vedic timing divides a life into chapters ruled by nine planets in a fixed order. The system is Vimshottari, meaning the 120-year cycle in which each of the nine planets takes a turn of a fixed length. Each turn is a dasha, a chapter of life ruled by one planet. The big chapter is the mahadasha, which runs from six to twenty years. Inside it the same nine planets each take a turn in the same order, and each of those is an antardasha, a sub-period lasting months rather than decades.

Which chapter you were born into, and how much of it was already spent, comes from your Moon's exact longitude. Nothing else in the system needs computing after that, because the order and the proportions never change.

Now the part that answers the question. A period matters for this decision when the planet ruling it carries a distance role in your chart. The roles, and what each is worth:

A dated window is a sub-period whose ruler carries one of these roles, sitting inside a chapter whose ruler also carries one. Both get scored and the scores add. That is why a Rahu period is not automatically a moving period: Rahu counts for 2 in every chart, and in a chart with no other role in play, 2 is all it counts for.

It is also why two people who are both "in Rahu" get opposite advice. In Chart E below, the sub-period beginning 7 April 2027 scores 12, because Saturn rules the 12th there and the chapter's ruler stands in the 12th as well. In Chart F, the same twenty-year horizon produces nothing above 6. The period is not the answer; the period plus the roles is.

Where the slow planets are right now

Every reader shares this part of the sky. Positions are for 26 August 2026:

Saturn entered Pisces on 29 March 2025. It first crosses into Aries on 3 June 2027, retreats into Pisces on 20 October 2027, and settles into Aries on 23 February 2028. Rahu leaves Aquarius for Capricorn on 5 December 2026. Jupiter enters Leo on 31 October 2026, returns to Cancer on 25 January 2027, and goes back to Leo on 26 June 2027.

How long does a decision have to wait for Saturn, in general? Measured across 23 complete sign seasons between 2027 and 2085: Saturn spends a median of 901 days actually inside a sign, and a median of 1,058 days between the day it first enters and the day it finally leaves, the difference being the retrograde step back into the previous sign. Nineteen of those 23 seasons arrive in two or three separate legs rather than one continuous stay. Rahu is far more regular, at 566 days per sign with almost no variation.

Those two numbers set the scale of the answer. If your decision turns on a Saturn transit, the unit is roughly two and a half to three years and it may arrive in pieces. If it turns on Rahu, the unit is a year and a half and it arrives once.

Where Saturn and Rahu are standing in your chart today

Saturn is in Pisces and Rahu is in Aquarius, so their house position depends only on your rising sign:

Three of those rows are directly about this decision right now. A Sagittarius ascendant has Saturn sitting in the 4th house, which puts slow pressure on the home base. A Gemini ascendant has Saturn in the 10th, which puts the same pressure on the work itself. A Scorpio ascendant has Rahu in the 4th, the combination read as restlessness where you live.

When they next arrive, for every rising sign

This is the part that cannot be generalised, and the table shows why. Dates run from the first entry to the final exit of each season, with retrograde re-entries folded in:

Read the first column down and the case for a personal reading makes itself. A Sagittarius ascendant is inside Saturn's pass over the 4th house today. A Scorpio ascendant waits until 25 February 2052. That is a gap of more than twenty-five years on the single transit most directly about the ground you live on, which is why an answer written for everyone lands correctly for almost no one.

Two of those rows carry a second reading worth naming. A Capricorn ascendant gets Saturn into the 4th on 3 June 2027 and holds it until April 2030, which is 1,049 days. A Cancer ascendant gets Saturn into the 10th on the same date, so a single ingress presses one reader's home and another reader's job at the same time. The longest 4th-house season in the table belongs to Cancer rising, at 1,310 days from January 2041.

Three charts, worked end to end

Three real charts, computed at the birth minute, with nothing added by hand. Each reaches a different verdict, and the point of showing all three is that the method is identical in every one.

Chart D: Sagittarius rising, 12 September 1991, 14:30, Hyderabad

The fixed half. Sagittarius rises at 21 degrees 50 minutes, in the Purva Ashadha lunar mansion. The Moon is at 15 degrees 07 minutes of Libra, in Swati, standing in the 11th house.

Saturn is in Capricorn in the 2nd house, in its own sign and retrograde. Rahu is in Sagittarius, sitting on the rising sign itself.

What the combinations say. Three are present, for a total weight of 4. The lord of the lagna sits in the 9th, which reads as a path running through distance: travel, higher study, or an opportunity that is not local. The lord of the 4th sits in the 9th, which reads as a sense of home that travels rather than staying put. The lord of the 12th sits in the 10th, which reads as distance showing up through the profession rather than the private life.

Put those three together and the shape is specific. The home is mobile and the distance arrives through the work. Nothing here says the base moves permanently, because the 4th lord is in the 9th rather than the 12th, and the two rules read differently: the 9th carries the home with you, the 12th relocates it. Of the three answers named at the top of this page, that pattern points at the middle one.

The Moon. Waxing, 49.8 degrees from the Sun, which is a phase strength of 0.276 on the zero-to-one scale, and it fell on the fifth lunar day of the bright fortnight. Under 90 degrees of separation the Moon counts as weak whichever direction it is travelling, so the emotional cost of being away from base is real for this chart even though the structure supports the move.

The dates. Saturn's chapter runs from 16 April 2014 to 15 April 2033. The sub-periods inside it, with the house each ruler stands in:

The current sub-period carries no distance role at all and ends on 18 October 2026. The one that follows is ruled by Mars, which owns the 12th house in this chart, and it runs 404 days to 27 November 2027.

The transits. Saturn has been in Pisces, this chart's 4th house, since 29 March 2025, and stays until 23 February 2028 apart from the excursion into Aries between 3 June and 20 October 2027. Jupiter enters Leo, the 9th house, on 31 October 2026 and is in and out of it until 24 July 2028.

Reading the two clocks together. The base is under Saturn's weight for another eighteen months at the same time as the 12th lord's sub-period opens on 18 October 2026 and Jupiter reaches the 9th two weeks later. Pressure on where you live, arriving alongside an opening in the houses of distance and work, is the configuration in which a remote arrangement or a work-led relocation gets seriously considered rather than idly wondered about.

The chaturthamsha adds one detail. The chaturthamsha is a divisional chart, meaning each sign is cut into four parts and re-mapped to describe one subject in more detail, and this one describes home and property. Jupiter, which owns the 4th house in the birth chart, lands in Leo there, the same sign it holds in the birth chart, which is read as a placement that keeps its character rather than changing it. Saturn lands in Capricorn, its own sign, and holds its birth sign as well. A divisional chart describes how something is built rather than whether it happens, so read that as a base that is solid wherever it ends up, and not as a claim about which city.

Chart E: Pisces rising, 7 April 1986, 04:50, Kolkata

The fixed half. Pisces rises at 10 degrees 44 minutes, in Uttara Bhadrapada. The Moon is at 26 degrees 55 minutes of Aquarius, in Purva Bhadrapada, standing in the 12th house.

Three planets stand in the 12th house: the Moon, Mercury and Jupiter.

What the combinations say. Seven are present, for a total weight of 17. Three of them carry the maximum weight of 3: the lord of the 12th in the 9th, the lord of the 4th in the 12th, and the lord of the lagna in the 12th. Three more carry 2: the lord of the 10th in the 12th, the lord of the 7th in the 12th, and the Moon in the 12th. Occupancy of the 12th supplies the last.

That is close to the maximum a chart produces, and the reason is structural rather than a run of luck. Pisces rising puts Saturn on the 12th house and Mercury on the 4th, and in this chart Saturn went to the 9th while Mercury went to the 12th, so the two distance houses ended up holding each other. Both of the rules named at the top of this page are present at once: the 4th lord in the 12th says the home moves, and the 10th lord in the 12th says the work is what moves it.

The Moon. Waning, 333.7 degrees from the Sun, a phase strength of 0.146, and it fell on the thirteenth lunar day of the dark fortnight. The Moon is also in the 12th house, which reads as a mind already elsewhere. In the chaturthamsha the Moon lands in Scorpio, where it is debilitated and read as working uphill.

So what does a chart this heavily weighted toward distance, carrying a weak Moon, actually mean? It means the structure and the feeling point opposite ways. The placements say a life at a distance is written in; the Moon says the attachment to home will not be quietly given up. That combination often describes someone who moves, does well, and does not stop missing where they came from, and the useful response is to plan for the second half rather than be surprised by it.

The dates. Mercury's chapter runs from 15 December 2012 to 15 December 2029, and Mercury itself stands in the 12th and owns the 4th, so the whole chapter carries a distance role.

The sub-period beginning 7 April 2027 scores 12, the highest in the next twenty years for this chart, and it runs 983 days to 15 December 2029.

The complication, and it is a real one. With an Aquarius Moon, Saturn's passage through Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces is sade sati, meaning the roughly seven-and-a-half-year stretch in which Saturn crosses the sign before the Moon's, the Moon's own sign, and the one after it. Saturn entered Capricorn on 24 January 2020, so for this chart the passage began then and lifts on 23 February 2028, the day Saturn leaves Pisces for Aries. The highest-scoring window in twenty years therefore opens on 7 April 2027, ten months before Sade Sati ends.

Does that cancel the window? No, and the two facts resolve cleanly. Sade Sati slows and tests foundations rather than closing doors, and the transit clock and the period clock run independently, so a strong period inside it is genuinely strong and simply arrives with more friction and more paperwork than the same period would in 2029. The practical reading is that the first ten months of that window reward accepting terms and getting established over holding out for better ones, and that the same window after February 2028 is where the gains consolidate. Chart F: Gemini rising, 29 December 1997, 18:20, Jaipur

The fixed half. Gemini rises at 23 degrees 06 minutes, in Punarvasu. The Moon is at 11 degrees 51 minutes of Sagittarius, in Moola, standing in the 7th house.

What the combinations say. None of the twenty-two is present. The score is 0.

A zero needs explaining rather than repeating. Venus owns the 12th and went to the 8th, which is not one of the distance houses. Saturn owns the 9th and went to the 10th, which is a work placement rather than a distance one. Mercury owns the 4th and went to the 6th, so the home lord touches neither the 9th nor the 12th, which is exactly the condition the 4th-lord rules require. Ketu does stand in the 9th and Rahu is Rahu, so the period machinery still finds windows to score, but the birth chart carries no settlement combination for those periods to activate.

What that changes about the advice. For this chart the question is no longer "which of the two offers" but "how do I get the most out of staying". The 4th lord sitting in the 6th links the house of home to the house of daily work, and while no classical settlement rule covers that placement, the plain geometry is that the two houses are joined in this chart. What can be defended firmly is the negative finding: the combinations that would argue for a move are absent, and absent is a verdict.

The Moon. Waning, 357.8 degrees from the Sun, a phase strength of 0.012. This chart was born on the new moon, with the Sun and Moon within 2.2 degrees of each other, so the Moon is about as weak by phase as the measure goes. A move made against that Moon carries the largest emotional cost of the three charts here, and the chart also gives the least structural reason to make one.

The dates. The Moon's chapter runs from 9 October 2024 to 10 October 2034.

The best score anywhere in the next twenty years is 6, in sub-periods ruled by Venus, which owns the 12th. Set that against the 12 sitting in Chart E's calendar for April 2027 and the difference between the two charts is a number rather than an impression.

The transits, and the clearest instruction of the three charts. Saturn is in Pisces, this chart's 10th house, from 29 March 2025 to 23 February 2028. Saturn in the 10th is the transit read as heavy responsibility that rewards delivering over moving, and the dated career reading for this chart returns exactly that from 26 August 2026 to 3 June 2027 and again from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028, with the stretch in between and the period from 23 February 2028 to 8 August 2029 read as the work already done starting to pay. Saturn then reaches the 12th house on 8 August 2029.

So the answer for this chart is a sequence rather than a choice. Stay through Saturn's pass over the 10th, take the remote arrangement over the relocation if both are on the table, and let the payoff from February 2028 arrive before making any move. The first genuine distance window for this chart opens with Saturn in the 12th in August 2029.
