Why the same number is good for one person and bad for the next

A mobile number in numerology reduces to a single digit, and that digit means nothing until it is set against your date of birth. Two people can carry the same number and get opposite readings, because the reading is a match between two things: the digit the number reduces to, and the numbers your birth date produces.

There are two birth numbers, and both are needed. The first is your mulank, the root number, which is the day of the month you were born reduced to a single digit. The second is your bhagyank, the destiny number, which is the total of every digit in your full date of birth, again reduced. A number that suits your mulank can fail your bhagyank, and a number that suits both is the one worth holding.

That is why a list of lucky mobile numbers is the wrong shape of answer. There is no single lucky digit. There are 120 birth-number pairs that a real date of birth can produce, and each one accepts a different set of digits. The table further down gives all 120 rows so you can read your own.

Reducing your mobile number

Add every digit of the ten-digit number together. That total is the compound number. Add its digits once more and you have the single digit, 1 to 9, that the number is judged by.

Take 98765 43210 as a worked example. Nine plus eight plus seven plus six plus five plus four plus three plus two plus one plus zero is 45. Four plus five is 9. So that number reads as a 9, ruled by Mars.

Three totals are kept as they are rather than reduced: 11, 22 and 33. When a total lands on one of those, the two-digit form is what gets named, and the matching is done through its root, so 11 is matched as a 2, 22 as a 4 and 33 as a 6. Do I count the +91?

Count the ten digits you dial inside India, and leave the country code out. The ten digits are what identify your connection; the 91 is shared by every mobile number in the country and so cannot distinguish yours from anyone else's.

This is worth settling before you compare two numbers, because the choice changes the answer. Adding 91 adds ten to the total, and ten reduces to one, so every number's single digit moves up by exactly one place. The 9 in the worked example above becomes a 1 if you include the country code. Pick the ten-digit convention, use it for every number you check, and the comparison stays honest.

Your mulank, from the day you were born

Your mulank comes from the day of the month alone. The month and year play no part in it.

The 29th is the only day of the month that produces a master number, because two plus nine is 11 and 11 is kept rather than reduced. Everyone born on the 29th carries mulank 11 and is matched using the rules for 2.

Your bhagyank, from the whole date

Your bhagyank adds the digits of the day, the digits of the month and the digits of the year, then reduces the total.

Someone born on 14 July 1990 works it out like this. The day gives one plus four, which is 5. The month gives 7. The year gives one plus nine plus nine plus zero, which is 19. Five plus seven plus nineteen is 31, and three plus one is 4. So their bhagyank is 4, ruled by Rahu, while their mulank is 5, ruled by Mercury.

The table every match is scored against

Each digit 1 to 9 answers to a planet and accepts a specific set of numbers. Those sets are the whole basis of the match.

Read a row as the numbers that particular planet works with. Row 7 says Ketu accepts 2, 5 and 7 and nothing else, which is why mulank 7 is the hardest birth number to buy a phone for.

The three scores

AstroMedha grades a number against your two birth numbers on three bands, the same bands used to grade a name spelling against them.

• 90 out of 100, full harmony. The number's digit sits inside your mulank's accepted set and inside your bhagyank's accepted set.
• 65, partial. It sits inside one of the two and not the other. The number serves one half of you and is neutral to the other.
• 40, no link. It sits inside neither.

A 65 is not a bad number. It means the number is working for one of your two birth numbers, and the useful question becomes which one, since you can choose.

The worked example, end to end

Back to the person born on 14 July 1990, holding 98765 43210.

Their number reduces to 9. Their mulank is 5, and 5 accepts 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9, so the 9 is accepted there. Their bhagyank is 4, and 4 accepts 4, 5, 6 and 8, which does not include 9. One yes and one no gives 65 out of 100, serving the mulank.

What would score 90 for them? The digits accepted by both, which is the overlap of {3, 5, 6, 7, 9} and {4, 5, 6, 8}. That leaves 5 and 6. A number totalling to a 5 or a 6 is the full-harmony choice for anyone with mulank 5 and bhagyank 4, and their combination has its own page at Mulank 5 and Bhagyank 4.

When no number can score 90 for you

Fifteen of the 120 birth-number pairs have an empty overlap. For those people there is no digit anywhere that satisfies both birth numbers, so no mobile number in existence scores 90. Counted over every date from 1930 to 2025, this covers 10.6% of birth dates, which is about one person in nine.

Being told "no better number was found" would be misleading here, because it sounds like the number you have is already right. The truer statement is that your two birth numbers accept completely different digits, so a mobile number has to choose which one of them it serves, and you get to make that choice deliberately.

Every one of the fifteen is the same collision: a Sun or Moon number on one side and a Rahu or Saturn number on the other. Sun and Moon accept the softer, outward-facing digits, and Rahu and Saturn accept the structural ones, and the two lists do not touch.

Which side to serve is a decision with a usable answer. Your mulank governs how you operate day to day, the temperament people meet. Your bhagyank governs the direction your life keeps returning to. So the question becomes which of those two the number is actually carrying. A personal number that mostly handles friends, family and errands sits with your daily temperament, which points at the mulank set. A number printed on invoices and business cards is attached to the work your life is heading towards, which points at the bhagyank set. There is no third option that satisfies both, and choosing neither leaves you on a 40.

What these tables will not tell you, and why

Most mobile totals have no named compound reading. A ten-digit number beginning with 6, 7, 8 or 9 has a digit total somewhere between 6 and 90. AstroMedha's compound table names 28 of the values in that span, among them 17, the Star of Immortality, and 23, the Royal Star of the Lion. Only 18.56% of all ten-digit numbers land on a total that has a named reading. For the remaining 81.44% there is a single digit and no compound meaning, and inventing one for a total of 48 would be making it up. The named ones each have a page, for example compound number 17 and compound number 23.

The warning about 13, 14, 16 and 19 almost never applies here. Those four are the karmic-debt compounds, the totals treated as carrying an unpaid debt. A ten-digit number reaches one of them in 0.0142% of cases, roughly one number in seven thousand, because getting ten digits to sum to 19 or less means almost every digit being a zero. AstroMedha checks those four against the compound of your birth day, where a total of 13 or 19 is ordinary and the warning has something to bite on. Carried across to a ten-digit total, the same rule is technically live and almost never fires.

The compatibility table runs one way, and only one way. Three of its entries are not reciprocal: 4 accepts 5, but 5 does not accept 4; 8 accepts both 5 and 6, and neither 5 nor 6 accepts 8. So the question this page answers is whether the number suits you, judged from your birth numbers outward. It is not the same question as whether you suit the number, and that second question is not what gets scored.

A mobile number is not part of your birth chart. Your planets, houses and periods are fixed by the moment you were born. A number you chose at a shop counter is a match against two figures derived from that birth date, which is a smaller claim than a chart reading and should be treated as one.

How scarce is a good number, really

There are exactly 4,000,000,000 ten-digit numbers beginning with 6, 7, 8 or 9. Sorted by the digit they reduce to, they come out almost perfectly even: every digit from 1 to 9 covers 444,444,444 or 444,444,445 of them, which is 11.1111% of the pool each. No target digit is rare, and a dealer telling you that a particular number is scarce is talking about the pattern of the digits, not about numerology.

Across all birth dates, 27.24% of that pool scores 90. So slightly better than one number in four is a full-harmony number for any given person, before you narrow by price or by how easy it is to remember.

Digits are not equally useful across the population, though.

That top row is where the popular claim that 5 is the best mobile number comes from, and it explains both why the claim spreads and why it is unreliable. Five is the most widely accepted digit in the table, and it is still the wrong choice for 42.5% of people. The bottom row matters just as much: a number totalling to 8 is a full-harmony number for fewer than one person in twenty, which is why generic advice tends to warn people off it. If your mulank or bhagyank is 4 or 8, that warning is aimed at somebody else.

Choosing a number at the counter

You are usually shown a list of available numbers and asked to pick. The arithmetic is quick enough to do on the spot.

1. Work out your mulank and your bhagyank once, and write down your 90 set from the grid above. It never changes, so this is a one-time step.
2. For each number on the list, add the ten digits and reduce to one digit.
3. Keep the ones whose digit is in your 90 set. If the list has none, fall back to the digits that serve whichever of your two birth numbers you decided to favour.
4. Among the survivors, pick on the ordinary grounds: price, how easy it is to say aloud, whether you will remember it.

If you are already holding a number you cannot give up, the arithmetic offers no way around it. The total is fixed by the digits, and the digits are fixed by the number, so nothing about how you write it or store it changes the reading.
