Margashirsha Maas: The Month Krishna Called His Own

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna runs through a list of the best of every category and names himself in each one. Among months, he names Margashirsha. No other month in the Hindu calendar gets that, and the choice is not arbitrary: this was the month the year used to begin in.

The Month That Once Opened the Year

Margashirsha has a second name, Agrahayana, which means the head of the year, and in Hindi and Bhojpuri it is simply Aghan. In the older Vedic reckoning the year started here, in the cool clear weather after the rains have gone and before the cold sets in properly, with the harvest coming in. Chaitra took the front of the calendar later, and Margashirsha kept its old name and its old reputation.

What the reputation amounts to is that this is the pleasant month. The heat has broken, the rain has stopped, the wedding season is at its height, and the tradition treats the whole month as a good time to do almost anything. There is no fasting month here and no month long vow. That is unusual enough among the twelve to be worth naming.

Vivah Panchami

The fifth day of the bright fortnight is the day Rama and Sita were married at Janakpur. It is kept as a wedding day for them, with the ceremony re-enacted at Janakpur in Nepal and at Ayodhya, and processions carrying the bridegroom to the bride's house.

Many families will not hold their own weddings on it, and the reason they give is the marriage it commemorates. Rama and Sita were separated, she was doubted, and she left. So the day is celebrated as a divine wedding and avoided as a human one, which is a distinction the tradition makes on almost no other date.

Gita Jayanti

The eleventh day of the bright fortnight is Mokshada Ekadashi, and it is kept as Gita Jayanti, the day Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna between the two armies at Kurukshetra. The Gita is read from end to end, in a single sitting where the household can manage it, and copies are given away.

It is one of the natural dates in the year for a person who has been meaning to read the thing properly. The month Krishna named after himself carries the day he is held to have spoken.

Dhanurmas, and the Doors Closing

Midway through Margashirsha the Sun leaves Scorpio and enters Sagittarius, which is Dhanu. That entry starts Dhanurmas, called Kharmas across the north, and the wedding season shuts for a month. No weddings, no house warmings, no thread ceremonies, no new ventures, until the Sun moves into Capricorn around the middle of January.

The south does not read the same stretch as empty. In Tamil Nadu it is Margazhi, the most devotional month of the year, when temples open before dawn, the Tiruppavai of Andal and the Tiruvempavai are sung in the streets at first light, and the kolam outside the door gets larger every morning. Both regions agree on what the month is not for. They differ on what to put in the space.

The Star Behind the Name

Margashirsha is named for Mrigashirsha, one of the twenty seven nakshatras, the lunar mansions the Moon passes through in a month. Its lord is Mars, its deity is Soma, and its symbol is a deer's head. The name means exactly that, and the star's quality is searching: the animal that lifts its head and moves toward a scent, quick and easily startled and not yet arrived.

A month named for the seeker, holding the day the Gita was spoken, is the calendar being consistent with itself. The Gita opens with a man who does not know what to do.

Whose Month This Really Is

Margashirsha does specific work on specific charts.

If you are running a Mars period, or you were born under Mrigashirsha, Chitra or Dhanishta, the three mansions Mars governs, the month carries your own signature.

If you are hunting a wedding date, this is the month to read carefully rather than the month to relax in. The clear window is the first half, and it closes the day the Sun enters Sagittarius. Everything after that waits for the Sun to reach Capricorn in January. Anyone booking a hall in December is competing with every other family that has worked this out.

If your Jupiter is weak, showing as a loss of direction or a shortage of good counsel, Gita Jayanti is the date in this month built for it, and the practice it asks for is reading rather than ritual.

And if the year has left you unsure what you are actually aiming at, the month is named for the star of exactly that condition. What Mrigashirsha does not promise is arrival. What it favours is the search being made seriously.

The 2026 Window

In Purnimanta reckoning, used across north India, Margashirsha 2026 runs from 25 November to 23 December. In Amanta reckoning, used across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and the south, it runs from 9 December 2026 to 7 January 2027.

Vivah Panchami falls on 14 December 2026. The Sun enters sidereal Sagittarius on 16 December 2026, which starts Dhanurmas and Kharmas, and Margazhi begins in Tamil Nadu the same day. Gita Jayanti, on Mokshada Ekadashi, falls on 20 December 2026. The Sun stays in Sagittarius until the evening of 14 January 2027, so the wedding season is shut for that whole span.

The month's full moon is an awkward one in 2026 and worth a word. The Moon is exactly full at 06:58 on the morning of 24 December 2026, which is after sunrise in Kolkata and Chennai and before it in Delhi and Mumbai. The full moon day therefore falls on 24 December in the east and the south and on 23 December in the north and the west, so Dattatreya Jayanti, which is kept on this full moon, is not on one national date this year.
