India's chart, checked against its own history

India's chart divides the country's life into long planetary stretches called mahadashas. Each one runs for a fixed number of years, the order never changes, and where a chart starts in that cycle is set by the position of the Moon at the moment of birth. For India that moment is midnight on 15 August 1947.

None of that is adjustable after the fact. The lengths are fixed, the sequence is fixed, and the start was fixed in 1947. So the periods below were not chosen to fit anything. They are what the arithmetic produces, and what happened inside each one is a matter of public record.

The stretches, and what fell inside them

Saturn, August 1947 to September 1965. Saturn is the planet of structure, scarcity and slow building. This is Independence and Partition, the Constitution coming into force in January 1950, the first two decades of building institutions on very little, and the war with China in October 1962.

Mercury, September 1965 to September 1982. Mercury governs commerce, technique and communication. The Green Revolution reorganised Indian agriculture, the country tested a nuclear device in May 1974, fought the 1971 war that created Bangladesh, and lived through the Emergency from June 1975 to March 1977.

Ketu, September 1982 to September 1989. Ketu is the shortest of these and reads as sudden severance. Indira Gandhi was assassinated on 31 October 1984. The Bhopal gas disaster followed five weeks later. Both fell inside a seven-year window that opened in 1982.

Venus, September 1989 to September 2009. Venus governs wealth, comfort and expansion. The liberalisation budget of July 1991 opened the economy, the software industry was built, and the middle class that exists today was largely made in this stretch.

Sun, September 2009 to September 2015. The Sun governs authority and the visible seat of power. This is a period defined by arguments about who holds it, and it closes with a change of government in 2014.

Moon, September 2015 to September 2025. The Moon governs the public, the mass, and volatility of mood. Demonetisation in November 2016, the pandemic from March 2020, and the build-out of digital public infrastructure all sit here.

Mars, September 2025 to September 2032. This is where India is now.

Rahu, September 2032 to September 2050.

What the fit does and does not prove

A period that matches history after the fact is weaker evidence than it feels. Each stretch above runs for years, most decades contain a war or a crisis or a boom, and a reader who wants the fit to work will find it. That is true of every retrospective mapping ever published, including this one.

What can be said more firmly is narrower. The boundaries were not moved to suit the events, because they cannot be moved. And two of them land unusually close to a turn: Ketu opening in 1982 and closing in 1989 brackets the 1984 shocks almost exactly, and Venus opening in September 1989 sits within two years of the 1991 budget that changed the country's economic direction.

The honest verdict is that the chart divides Indian history into stretches that a historian would also recognise as distinct, and that this is interesting rather than proven.

One finding that is checkable rather than interpretive

The Bombay stock exchange index is dated from 1 April 1979, and a chart cast for that date runs its own cycle. On it, Rahu holds an eighteen-year stretch from July 1996 to July 2014.

Two of the largest crashes in the index's history fall inside that single stretch. The dotcom collapse of 2000 and the global financial crisis of 2008 sit about four years and twelve years into it. Rahu is the planet Vedic astrology associates with appetite that outruns judgement, which is a fair description of both.

The part usually left out is that two others do not. The 1992 securities scam took the index down by roughly half from its April 1992 peak, and that sits in the Mars stretch before Rahu opened. The pandemic crash of March 2020 sits in the Jupiter stretch after Rahu closed. So the score is two inside and two outside, not four for four.

That is the number worth carrying, and it is the reason this page exists rather than a cleaner one. A version of this finding that named only the two hits would read far better and would be worth nothing, because a claim you cannot fail is a claim that tells you nothing when it passes.

What this says about now

India entered its Mars stretch in September 2025 and leaves it in September 2032. Mars is the planet of effort, competition and hard capability, and it is the shortest of the long periods at seven years. On this reading the current decade is one that gets built rather than granted.

The stretch that follows is the one worth marking. Rahu holds India's chart for eighteen years from September 2032, and in the 1947 chart Rahu sits in the first house, the part of a chart that describes the self and how it presents to the world. A planet running its own long period while occupying that house carries more weight than it otherwise would.
