How Rare Is Your Lagna?

Twelve signs can be rising at the moment anyone is born, so the arithmetic guess is that each one belongs to about one person in twelve, or 8.33%. Across 1,339 birth charts held on this site, the guess is wrong. The commonest rising sign turns up 1.8 times as often as the rarest, and the gap is large enough that it could not plausibly be chance.

The lagna is the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the minute of birth, the sign a Vedic chart is built around and the one that decides which house every planet falls into. Here is how often each of the twelve was rising, counted across every chart in our store that carries a real birth time and a real birth place.

Pisces rising is the rarest of the twelve here and Virgo rising the commonest. If you have Pisces or Aries as your lagna you are in a group about a quarter smaller than an even split would give you, and if you have Virgo, Scorpio or Leo you are in one between a fifth and a third larger.

The rest of this page answers the questions that table opens: what exactly it was counted over, why the twelve are unequal in the first place, whether the hours people are born at have anything to do with it, how confident anyone should be in a 1.8-fold gap at this sample size, and whether being rare means anything at all.

What the 1,339 are, and what they are not

Every chart in the count belongs to a real person who typed their own birth date, birth time and birth place into this site between 27 March 2026 and 25 August 2026. Nothing was generated.

We began with all 1,661 profiles in the store and removed three groups. 197 carry 12:00 as their birth time, which is the placeholder this site writes when somebody skips the question, and a chart cast on a placeholder has no meaningful rising sign, so those are excluded rather than guessed at. 60 have no birth coordinates, and without a latitude the ascendant cannot be computed at all. 65 repeat a chart already in the set on the same date, clock and place, usually the same person saved twice, and each such chart is counted once. That leaves 1,339.

1,204 of the 1,339 births, or 89.9%, are inside India, and the 1,339 are spread over 569 named places, with Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai the five largest. Indian birth latitudes in the set run from 6.7 degrees north to 34.1, with the middle chart at 22.6. Birth years run from 1946 to 2026, with the middle chart born in 1997.

So this is a measurement of AstroMedha's readers, and readers of an Indian Vedic astrology site are not a random draw from Indian births. They skew towards people born in large cities, towards people born in the last thirty years, and towards people who know their birth time well enough to type it. Each of those could move the numbers. Where the India-born subset is counted on its own the ordering barely changes, with Scorpio at 10.13% and Virgo at 9.97% swapping the top two places and Pisces and Aries still last at 6.15% each, so the foreign-born tenth of the sample is not what produces the pattern.

Why the twelve are not equal

The reason has nothing to do with astrology and everything to do with the sky's geometry, which means it would hold for any population measured anywhere.

Signs do not take the same length of time to rise. The zodiac is a circle tilted against the Earth's equator, so as the Earth turns, some thirty-degree stretches of that circle stand up steeply over the horizon and pass quickly, and others lie at a shallow angle and take much longer to clear. A sign that spends 141 minutes rising will be the lagna for 141 minutes of every day, and one that spends 85 minutes rising will be the lagna for 85. Births spread over the day therefore land in the slow-rising signs more often, in direct proportion.

The clearest way to see it is on a single real day. Below is every lagna window of 15 March 1994 at New Delhi, computed minute by minute.

All times Indian Standard Time. Scorpio appears twice because its window straddles midnight, and the two pieces sum to 142 minutes.

A baby born in Delhi that day had a 141-minute door into Cancer rising and an 84-minute door into Pisces rising. That single ratio, 141 to 84, is most of the answer to the whole page. Nothing about Pisces is being suppressed. The door is simply open for less of the day.

The same day, a different city

Latitude changes the ratio, and it changes it a lot. Here is the identical date recomputed at Chennai, about 1,750 kilometres south of Delhi.

Two things follow from that column pair, and both matter to a reader trying to place their own chart.

The first is that the spread narrows as you go south. At Delhi the longest sign of the day runs 1.7 times the shortest. At Chennai it runs 1.4 times. Move to the equator and every sign would take almost the same time, and the twelve would be nearly equal.

The second is that two people born at the same minute in different Indian cities can have different rising signs, which is the practical version of the same fact. At 06:25 on that date the lagna was Aquarius in Delhi and Pisces in Chennai. The clock reading was identical. The horizon was not.

How long each sign rises, by latitude

The single-day tables above are one date, and a sign's rising time varies through the year. Averaging over every minute of a full year removes that. Below is the mean number of minutes per day each sign spends as the lagna, at seven latitudes.

Each column sums to 1,440 minutes, a full day. Averaged over the year 2000 at one-minute resolution.

Read down the equator column and the numbers pair off: Aries matches Libra, Taurus matches Scorpio, and so on around the circle. At the equator the horizon cuts the zodiac symmetrically, so opposite signs rise for the same length of time. Every latitude north of it breaks that symmetry, and the further north, the harder it breaks. By Srinagar, Pisces gets 79 minutes a day against Cancer's 146.

This is why a rarity figure needs a place attached to it. Pisces rising is roughly 46% rarer than Cancer rising for a birth at Srinagar, about 23% rarer at Chennai, and about 9% rarer at the equator. Our 1,339 charts pool many latitudes, so the table at the top of this page is the pooled answer for our readers rather than the answer for any one city.

Does the hour people are born at change the answer?

It should, in principle. Births are not spread evenly across the twenty-four hours, and if a population clusters into the morning it will over-represent whichever signs rise in the morning.

An even spread would put 4.17% in each hour. The nine hours from 05:00 to 13:00 hold 45.6% of the births against the 37.5% an even spread would give them, and the seven quietest hours, 22:00 to 04:00, hold 22.8% against 29.2%. The tilt towards the morning is real and visible.

It also does almost nothing to the lagna table, and we can say exactly how little. Take the same 1,339 dates and places, recast each one at every hour of the clock, then reweight the results by the hour distribution above. Compare that against the same calculation with the hours weighted evenly.

The largest shift anywhere in the table is 0.09 of a percentage point. A morning-heavy population barely moves the rising-sign distribution.

The reason is worth stating because it is not obvious. A fixed clock hour does not correspond to a fixed rising sign. The lagna at 07:00 in Delhi is Pisces in March, Cancer in July and Scorpio in November, because the Sun's position relative to the horizon walks all the way round the zodiac over a year. So a preference for morning births spreads itself across all twelve signs as the birth dates spread across the calendar, and the tilt washes out.

Birth hour matters enormously for one person and hardly at all for a population. To see how much it would take, restrict the whole sample to births between 06:00 and 09:00 only, a three-hour window. Even then Scorpio rises to 11.09% from 9.45% and Pisces falls to 5.75% from 6.32%, a shift of under two points. A three-hour window is far tighter than any real population, and it still cannot produce the spread that latitude produces for free.

How confident should anyone be in this?

Two separate questions hide inside that, and they get opposite answers.

Is the distribution genuinely uneven, or could 1,339 charts look like this by chance? Genuinely uneven. Tested against a flat one-in-twelve expectation, the observed counts give a chi-square statistic of 47.9 on 11 degrees of freedom, which corresponds to a probability of about 1.5 in a million that an even distribution would produce a spread this wide. The India-born subset alone gives 39.2 and a probability near 5 in 100,000. The unevenness is real.

Is our sample any different from what the sky's geometry alone predicts? No, and this is the more interesting half. Recasting the same 1,339 dates and places across evenly spaced clock times gives the distribution that pure geometry predicts for our readers' latitudes. Comparing our real counts against it gives a chi-square of 11.9 on 11 degrees of freedom, a probability of 0.375, which is an ordinary result. Nothing left over.

Every geometry figure sits inside its own sign's 95% range. Virgo's +1.67 and Cancer's -1.41 are the two largest gaps and are also the two closest to leaving that range, so at a larger sample they are the ones to watch. At 1,339 charts they are noise.

That result sets the honest ceiling on the headline table. The ordering at the top of this page, Virgo first and Pisces last, is our sample's ordering. The ordering geometry predicts for the same latitudes puts Cancer first at 9.48% and Pisces last at 6.32%. Both agree on which end of the list the rare signs sit at. They disagree about the exact order at the crowded top, and 1,339 charts are not enough to settle it. Pisces last is solid, because it is last in both. Virgo first is our sample.

One useful contrast: run the same test on the Moon sign, the rashi the Moon occupied at birth, and the answer flips. Our readers' Moon signs run from Libra at 9.71% down to Aries at 6.72%, which looks like a similar spread, but against a flat expectation it gives a probability of 0.062, an unremarkable result. The Moon sign has no rising-time geometry behind it, so it has no reason to be uneven, and at this sample size it is not. The lagna does, and it is.

The finer grain: which nakshatra was rising

A sign is a thirty-degree slice, and a Vedic chart cuts the same circle a second way, into 27 nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. A nakshatra is a named lunar mansion, and the one rising at birth is read alongside the rising sign. Each nakshatra also divides into four quarters called padas, giving 108 positions in all.

Revati rising is the least common in our set at 1 chart in 50, and Hasta the most at 1 in 16.5. The full 27-way comparison against geometry gives a probability of 0.055, which is on the line and not past it, so at this sample size the nakshatra-level bumps are not something to build on. Hasta's +2.02 is the largest single gap in the table, and with 27 categories being compared at once, a gap that size turning up somewhere is close to expected even when nothing is going on.

The pada layer is where rarity runs out. All 108 nakshatra-and-pada positions appear in the 1,339 charts, none of them only once, and an even split would put 12.4 charts in each. So no rising pada is rare in the sense of being hard to find. The commonest, Punarvasu pada 4, holds 25 charts.

Rarity and accuracy are different questions

Before anyone gets attached to a rising sign, there is a prior question, and our own store answers it uncomfortably.

For every chart in the set we computed how many minutes away the birth time sits from the moment the lagna changed sign, using the local rate at which the horizon was moving.

Half of all charts sit within half an hour of a boundary, and the middle chart sits 31 minutes from one. So if a recorded birth time is off by ten minutes, about one reader in six-and-a-half has a different rising sign than the one they have been reading about, and every house in their chart moves with it.

Nearly two thirds of birth times end in a 0 or a 5, more than three times what an even spread over the sixty minutes would produce. Real births are not obliging enough to land on round numbers at that rate, so most of that excess is rounding, either by the person typing or by whoever wrote the time down decades ago. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour carries up to seven and a half minutes of error before anyone has made a mistake.

Put the two tables side by side and the practical reading is this: the rising sign is the most time-sensitive fact in a Vedic chart, and roughly a quarter of charts are close enough to a boundary that ordinary rounding could move them. If yours sits in the last two or three degrees of a sign, that is worth knowing before you build anything on the sign. Working out your rising sign without any calculation

There is a classical shortcut, and it is accurate enough to be worth knowing. At sunrise the Sun sits on the eastern horizon, so the sign rising at sunrise is the sign the Sun is in. After that the lagna advances one sign roughly every two hours.

We tested it against all 1,339 charts, comparing the shortcut's answer with the computed one. It names the right sign exactly 48.5% of the time, and lands within one sign 96.0% of the time. The errors are lopsided: where it is wrong, it is one sign short far more often than one sign long, because the Sun is usually some degrees into its sign at sunrise rather than at its start, which lets the horizon reach the next boundary sooner than the two-hour rule expects.

So the shortcut tells you your rising sign is one of two adjacent signs, almost always. Deciding which of the two needs the real calculation, because the answer depends on the exact date, your latitude, and how far into its sign the Sun was that morning. Two hours is also only an average: the tables above show the true window running anywhere from 79 to 146 minutes depending on the sign and the place.

What a rare lagna does tell you, and what it does not

Nothing on this page is evidence about a person's life. We hold no income, health, marriage or career outcomes for any of these 1,339 people, so we have never tested whether a rarer rising sign accompanies anything at all, and we are not going to imply one. Every figure here describes the structure of charts and the geometry that produces them. The same limit is stated on our study of 100,000 birth charts, which measures nakshatra and numerology base rates the same way.

What the numbers do give you is a denominator, which is what readers keep asking us for. When someone asks how unusual their placement is, they are asking how many people they should picture standing next to them. Now there is an answer for the rising sign: about 1 in 16.5 for Pisces, about 1 in 9.3 for Virgo, among our readers, at these latitudes, in 2026.

There is a second thing the table gives you, and it is the more useful of the two. Rarity of a rising sign is a fact about horizons rather than about people. A rare lagna indicates that the door into that sign was open for fewer minutes each day at the latitude its owner was born at, and it indicates nothing else. Anyone offering rarity as a distinction is describing the tilt of the Earth.

The lagna does carry real weight in a reading, and the weight comes from what it organises rather than from how uncommon it is. It fixes which planet rules your first house, which is called the lagna lord and is read as the planet the whole chart is anchored to, and it fixes which house every other planet lands in. Those are the parts worth spending time on. The ruler of the rising sign inherits the same skew, because three of the four commonest lagnas here are ruled by Mercury, Mars and the Sun. Across the 1,339 charts Mercury rules the first house in 19.3% of them, Venus in 17.6%, Mars in 16.4%, Jupiter in 15.2%, Saturn in 13.5%, the Sun in 10.0% and the Moon in 8.1%. The Sun and the Moon trail because each rules only one sign, while the other five rule two apiece.

The rarest sign has not always been the rarest

One more thing follows from the geometry, and it puts the whole table in perspective.

How long a sign takes to rise depends on where that stretch of the zodiac sits relative to the Earth's equator. The sidereal zodiac Vedic astrology uses is fixed to the stars, while the Earth's axis wobbles slowly, so the gap between the two, the ayanamsa, grows by about a degree every 72 years. The fast-rising stretch of sky therefore drifts across the sign names over centuries.

Recomputing the Delhi rising times at four widely separated dates, using the same Lahiri ayanamsa the rest of this site uses, shows the drift directly.

Pisces has been the shortest-rising sign at Delhi for the whole span of recorded Vedic practice, which is why it comes last in our sample too. It will not always be. By around 3500 the position passes to Aquarius, and every rarity figure on this page will be wrong for anyone born then. The numbers here are correct for births in the era they were measured in, which is the era all 1,339 of these people were born in.

Method, in full

All astronomical values come from the same sidereal Vedic calculations that run on every chart this site produces, using the Lahiri ayanamsa and a Swiss-grade ephemeris. Charts were counted on 26 August 2026.

Sample: 1,339 distinct charts from AstroMedha's profile store, entered between 27 March 2026 and 25 August 2026. Removed from the 1,661 rows present: 197 carrying the 12:00 placeholder in place of a birth time, 60 without birth coordinates, 65 duplicating another chart on date, clock and place. No test or probe rows existed in the table. Each birth was computed at its own true UTC offset for its own birth date, so births outside India are not cast on India's offset.

Geometry control: the same 1,339 dates and places recast at 144 evenly spaced clock times each, 192,816 ascendants, which holds dates and latitudes fixed and varies only time of day. The hour-reweighting test used 72 clock times per chart, grouped by hour and reweighted by the observed hour distribution.

Rising-duration tables: every minute of the year 2000 at each listed latitude, 527,040 ascendants per place. Historical drift table: every second minute of the years 500, 1250, 2000 and 3500 at Delhi.

Boundary distances: computed from the local rate of ascension, measured over a four-minute step at each birth moment, rather than assumed to be two hours a sign.

Significance: chi-square goodness of fit, 11 degrees of freedom for the twelve signs and 26 for the 27 nakshatras. Confidence ranges are normal approximations at 95%.

Common questions

Which rising sign is the rarest?
Across 1,339 charts with a real birth time and place, Pisces rising is the least common at 6.05%, about 1 in 16.5, with Aries just above it at 6.12%. Virgo leads at 10.75%, about 1 in 9.3. The commonest turns up 1.8 times as often as the rarest. Pisces last is solid because it is last under the sample and under the geometry alike; Virgo first is this sample's ordering, and geometry alone would put Cancer at the top.

Almost not at all. The tilt is real, with the nine hours from 05:00 to 13:00 holding 45.6% of births against the 37.5% an even spread would give. But reweighting the whole sample by that hour mix moves no sign by more than 0.09 of a percentage point, because a fixed clock hour does not correspond to a fixed rising sign. The lagna at 07:00 in Delhi is Pisces in March, Cancer in July and Scorpio in November, so a morning preference spreads itself across all twelve signs as birth dates spread across the calendar.
How sure can I be that my rising sign is the right one?
Less sure than most people assume, and it is worth checking the degree.
