How Many People Are in Sade Sati Right Now?

That is the count on 26 August 2026, out of the 1,658 birth charts AstroMedha holds. It works out to 23.8% of them, or roughly one person in four.

Sade Sati is the passage of about seven and a half years in which transiting Saturn crosses the three consecutive signs centred on the sign the Moon occupied at your birth. Its name comes from sade sat, seven and a half. The rule that decides membership has one input and no interpretation in it: take the sign Saturn is in today, count how many signs it stands from your natal Moon's sign, and if the answer is the 12th, the 1st or the 2nd, you are in it.

Saturn is at 19.74 degrees of Pisces today, moving backwards against the stars. So the three Moon signs it covers are Aquarius, Pisces and Aries, and everybody else is out. Which of those three signs Saturn happens to be standing in decides which phase you are in, so the 395 splits three ways:

Nobody else publishes this number. Every large Indian astrology platform holds the charts to compute it. Going through the sitemaps those platforms published as of 26 August 2026, including Astrotalk, GaneshaSpeaks, Astroyogi, InstaAstro, ClickAstro and DrikPanchang, turned up no page of this shape on any of them.

What the other three quarters are doing

Being outside Sade Sati is not the same as being outside Saturn's reach, and the gap between those two statements is 307 people.

Saturn standing in the 4th or the 8th sign from your Moon is a separate transit called dhaiya, or Small Panoti. It runs about two and a half years instead of seven and a half. In the 4th it is called Kantaka Shani and reads as pressure on home, property and emotional base. In the 8th it is called Ashtama Shani and reads as pressure on health and inherited matters. Today Saturn is in the 4th from a Sagittarius Moon and the 8th from a Leo Moon.

Adding the two together, 702 of 1,658 charts, or 42.3%, have Saturn in contact with the Moon by one of these two rules today. The remaining 956 charts, 57.7%, have Saturn sitting in one of the seven positions that neither rule touches: the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 11th sign from the Moon.

That matters for reading the headline correctly. The number of people with Saturn touching their Moon at any moment is roughly double the number in Sade Sati, and the second group has different dates and a different subject.

Why 23.8% and not 25%

Saturn covers three of twelve signs, so the obvious guess is 3 in 12, which is exactly 25%. The real figure is 1.2 points below it, and the reason is that the Moon signs of these 1,658 people are not spread evenly.

Saturn is currently sitting over the smallest group of the twelve. An Aries Moon is the least common in this base at 111 charts, and it is one of the three signs Saturn covers, which drags the total under the flat 25%.

Is the unevenness real, or is it the ordinary lumpiness of 1,658 draws? Comparing the twelve counts against a flat 138.2 gives a chi-square of 23.4 on 11 degrees of freedom, which corresponds to a probability of about 0.016 that a genuinely even distribution would look this lumpy by chance. That is unusual enough to notice and far short of proof. The honest reading is that this base leans slightly away from an Aries Moon and slightly towards a Libra or Gemini Moon, and that this page is not claiming a cause for it. Anyone who tells you the Moon favours certain signs at birth should be asked for their sample size before anything else.

The practical consequence is small and worth stating plainly: whichever way the lean runs, the share in Sade Sati stays close to a quarter, because Saturn always covers exactly three signs and three signs always hold close to a quarter of any large group of people.

The band the number lives in, and where today sits inside it

Since membership depends only on which sign Saturn occupies, there are exactly twelve possible answers for this base. Running all twelve gives the whole range the number can take:

The whole range is 388 to 455, or 23.4% to 27.4%. Today's 395 is the second-lowest of the twelve. The lowest arrives soon: when Saturn moves into Aries the count drops to 388, and it stays near there for most of the next six years, because Saturn's path from here runs Pisces, then Aries, then Taurus, and those are the three lowest rows in the table.

The high point of 455 does not arrive until Saturn reaches Virgo on 22 October 2038, twelve years from now. On this base, Sade Sati membership never leaves a band of roughly one person in four, and the stretch we are in is the quiet end of that band.

The dates the number changes, and by how many

Saturn stays in Pisces until 3 June 2027 at 05:37 IST. Until that minute the 395 changes for one reason only, which is that people join.

Then it moves, and the arithmetic is exact.

3 June 2027. Saturn enters Aries. The covered signs become Pisces, Aries and Taurus. The 132 charts with an Aquarius Moon leave the count. The 125 charts with a Taurus Moon enter it. Net change: 395 becomes 388. The 152 Pisces Moons move from Peak to Setting. The 111 Aries Moons move from Rising to Peak.

20 October 2027 at 07:18 IST. Saturn turned retrograde on 9 August 2027 and now reverses back into Pisces. Everything undoes. Those 132 Aquarius Moons are back in the Setting phase after 139 days out. The 125 Taurus Moons drop back out. The count returns to 395.

Retrograde means appearing, from Earth, to move backwards against the stars.

23 February 2028 at 19:30 IST. Saturn re-enters Aries for good this time. The 132 Aquarius Moons leave permanently, eight and a half months after the exit date most tables give them. The count settles at 388.

This is the part that most published Sade Sati calendars omit, and it has a real cost. An Aquarius Moon reading a table that says "ends 3 June 2027" is being given a date that is eight and a half months early. Saturn goes retrograde roughly once a year for about four and a half months, and when that reversal happens to straddle a sign boundary the transit genuinely comes back. The apparent reversal is caused by Earth overtaking Saturn on the inside track, but the sign Saturn stands in really does change back, and every rule on this page reads the sign.

For the same reason a Pisces Moon does not simply run Peak until 2027 and then Setting. The Peak returns between 20 October 2027 and 23 February 2028, then gives way to Setting until 17 April 2030.

When each group of people gets out

The full cycle for every Moon sign, day-stepped from the ingress table and reported first entry to final exit, with the number of people in this base attached to each:

Reading the top three rows as a schedule: 132 people finish on 23 February 2028, another 152 on 17 April 2030, and the last 111 of the current 395 on 31 May 2032. Everyone in Sade Sati on this base today is out within six years, and the base by then will be carrying a different set of people through it.

The Aries Moon row has a property none of the others has in this cycle. Saturn stays inside Pisces, Aries and Taurus continuously from 29 March 2025 to 31 May 2032, so those 111 charts get the full passage with no retrograde break anywhere in it. Every other Moon sign gets at least a few days off.

What this count cannot tell you

A number computed from stored birth data inherits whatever is wrong with the stored birth data, and two things are wrong with some of it.

194 of the 1,658 charts carry 12:00 noon as the birth time, which is the value the app writes when someone skips the field. The Moon travels about 13 degrees a day and a sign is 30 degrees wide, so on a day when the Moon changes sign, the assumed hour decides which sign gets recorded. Checking each of those 194 charts at 00:00 and at 23:59 local time, the hour decides the Moon sign for 84 of them. Of those 84, 11 are currently counted as outside Sade Sati and could be inside, and 8 are counted as inside and could be outside. That alone puts the headline anywhere from 387 to 406.

85 charts have no birthplace stored, so the timezone used to convert their birth clock is an assumption rather than a fact. Swinging that assumption across the full range from UTC-12 to UTC+14 changes the in-or-out answer for 3 of them.

Putting both together, the honest headline is 395, and the band is 384 to 409. Every figure on this page is quoted at its point estimate, and the same kind of uncertainty sits under each of them.

Three further rows were dropped before counting at all, because their stored date of birth falls after today. A chart cannot be computed for someone not yet born, so 1,661 rows became 1,658.

The rule itself was checked rather than assumed. Sixty of these charts were put a second time through the same Sade Sati calculation that answers the free tool, and the phase and the count of signs from the Moon agreed on 60 out of 60.

Does being in Sade Sati make people ask about Sade Sati?

Holding the charts and the chat logs at the same time makes this checkable, and the answer is no, or at least not by enough to see.

Of 3,842 questions people have typed to their own chart, 96 mention Saturn, Shani, Sade Sati, dhaiya or panoti. Those 96 came from 65 distinct people, and all 65 have a chart in this base, so each one can be checked against their own phase.

16 asked, and 15.5 would have been expected if being in Sade Sati made no difference at all. The gap is 0.14 standard errors, which is smaller than the noise in a sample this size.

The dhaiya figures point the same way with slightly more room in them: 15 of the 65 askers are in a dhaiya, 23.1%, against 18.5% across the base. On 65 people that difference is well inside the noise.

Sixty-five people is a small sample and it should be read as one. The 95% interval around 24.6% runs from 15.8% to 36.3%, so a moderate real effect could still be hiding inside it. What can be said is that there is no sign of a large one. The people asking about Shani are mostly not the people currently under Shani. What they are responding to is the transit's reputation, and that is an argument for publishing its dates.

Sade Sati is not a stage of life

A Saturn return is age-locked. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac, so it comes back to its birth position at roughly 29, 59 and 88 for everyone alive.

Sade Sati is not like that, and the count shows it clearly. Membership depends on your Moon's sign, which has nothing to do with when you were born relative to Saturn's cycle.

The two medians sit about a year apart against a spread of nearly thirty years. There is no age at which Sade Sati is due. Someone reading advice written for a 29-year-old going through it will find a 47-year-old in the same phase on the same dates. What transfers between those two readers is anything keyed to the phase. Anything written around being twenty-nine does not.

How the number has moved since AstroMedha started counting

Saturn entered Pisces at 21:45 IST on 29 March 2025, so the three covered Moon signs have not changed all year. Every movement in the count since then has come from people joining.

The early rows are unreliable, and showing them is the point. At 14 charts the share reads 14.3%, at 103 charts it reads 28.2%, and neither figure means anything, because two or three signups move a percentage over a base that small by ten points. By 930 charts it has settled, and by 1,658 it has stopped moving.

Below a few hundred charts, a share like this is measuring the sample rather than Saturn. That is why every number on this page carries its sample size beside it.

Finding yourself in these numbers

Everything above is a headcount, and a headcount cannot tell you which row you are in. That takes one thing: the sign your Moon occupied at your birth.

The Sade Sati calculator settles it from your birth date, and works without a birth time, because a Moon sign lasts about two and a quarter days. On the days the Moon actually changes sign it does need one, which is the same limitation that put a band under the headline above. It returns which of the twelve groups above you belong to, whether you are in Sade Sati, which phase, and whether you are in a dhaiya instead. That is the free half and it is complete on its own: with your Moon sign and the tables on this page you have your phase, your exit date, your retrograde return, and the number of other people in the same position.

The Peak phase covers two and a half years, which is too long to plan against. Inside it sits one dated event: transiting Saturn crossing the exact degree your Moon held at birth. Not the sign, the degree. That happens once if Saturn passes through going forward, and three times across about nine months if a retrograde loop catches it. Two people with a Pisces Moon, both in the Peak phase, both with the same exit date of 17 April 2030, can have one contact or three, and which of the two they get is decided by a number that only exists once their birth time is known.

The same input decides which of the nine Vimshottari periods, meaning the chapters that divide a life among nine planets in a fixed order, is running underneath the transit. Saturn crossing the Moon during a Saturn chapter and Saturn crossing the Moon during a Jupiter chapter are the same transit and not the same year.
