Do I Have a Dhana Yoga (a Wealth Combination)? Check Your Own Chart
A dhana yoga is present in a chart when the planets that rule its money houses are linked to each other. Four houses carry money in Vedic astrology, each of those four is ruled by one planet, and the combination exists when two or more of those rulers are tied together in one of the four ways set out below.
Which planets rule your money houses is decided by your lagna, the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so two people born in the same city on the same day, ninety minutes apart, are working with a different set of four planets and can get opposite answers to this question. That is why no general description can tell you whether you have one, and why the first thing you need is your birth time.
The four houses that carry money, and what each one means
The twelve houses of a chart are counted from your rising sign. Four of them are read for money, and they are read for different kinds of money.
The 2nd house is what you gather and hold: savings, family money, the value of things you own, and your own earning voice. It is the house of accumulated substance rather than income.
The 5th house is what arrives through past merit and through risk taken on judgement: speculation, investments, returns on a decision you made rather than on hours you worked.
The 9th house is fortune and patronage: the money that reaches you because someone senior backed you, because a chance fell your way, or because of the family and teachers you came from.
The 11th house is what arrives: gains, income, windfalls, and the networks that carry them to you. Where the 2nd is the store, the 11th is the inflow.
A fifth house matters to the rule as well. The 1st house is you, and its ruler is the planet the whole chart reports to. Classical texts count a link between the 1st ruler and a money-house ruler as a wealth combination too, on the reasoning that money reaching the chart is one thing and money reaching the person is another. AstroMedha's own detector uses the wider set (1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th). This page reports the four-house rule and the five-house rule separately and never mixes their numbers, because they give materially different answers, as the base rates further down show.
Step one: find the rulers of your own money houses
Take your rising sign and read across. The sign on each money house is fixed by the rising sign, and the ruler of each sign is fixed in the tradition, so this table is the same for everybody with a given ascendant. The last column is the share of charts with that ascendant that carried a link between two money-house rulers in our 100,000-chart sample, and the section after the table explains why that share swings so far.
| Ascendant | 2nd house | 5th house | 9th house | 11th house | Different ruling planets | Share with a link |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Taurus (Venus) | Leo (Sun) | Sagittarius (Jupiter) | Aquarius (Saturn) | 4 | 58.4% |
| Taurus | Gemini (Mercury) | Virgo (Mercury) | Capricorn (Saturn) | Pisces (Jupiter) | 3 | 33.5% |
| Gemini | Cancer (Moon) | Libra (Venus) | Aquarius (Saturn) | Aries (Mars) | 4 | 49.2% |
| Cancer | Leo (Sun) | Scorpio (Mars) | Pisces (Jupiter) | Taurus (Venus) | 4 | 62.4% |
| Leo | Virgo (Mercury) | Sagittarius (Jupiter) | Aries (Mars) | Gemini (Mercury) | 3 | 31.4% |
| Virgo | Libra (Venus) | Capricorn (Saturn) | Taurus (Venus) | Cancer (Moon) | 3 | 26.6% |
| Libra | Scorpio (Mars) | Aquarius (Saturn) | Gemini (Mercury) | Leo (Sun) | 4 | 74.6% |
| Scorpio | Sagittarius (Jupiter) | Pisces (Jupiter) | Cancer (Moon) | Virgo (Mercury) | 3 | 27.4% |
| Sagittarius | Capricorn (Saturn) | Aries (Mars) | Leo (Sun) | Libra (Venus) | 4 | 60.5% |
| Capricorn | Aquarius (Saturn) | Taurus (Venus) | Virgo (Mercury) | Scorpio (Mars) | 4 | 62.4% |
| Aquarius | Pisces (Jupiter) | Gemini (Mercury) | Libra (Venus) | Sagittarius (Jupiter) | 3 | 42.4% |
| Pisces | Aries (Mars) | Cancer (Moon) | Scorpio (Mars) | Capricorn (Saturn) | 3 | 26.4% |
Six of the twelve ascendants have one planet ruling two of the four money houses, which is why their "different ruling planets" count is three rather than four. Taurus and Scorpio charts have a single planet holding the 2nd and the 5th. Leo and Aquarius charts have one holding the 2nd and the 11th. Virgo and Pisces charts have one holding the 2nd and the 9th. That single planet is carrying two money houses on its own, which is a real concentration and is read as one, so it does not count as a link with itself.
If you do not know your rising sign, the free kundli tool computes it from your date, time and place of birth and prints every planet with its sign and house. The rising sign is where all of this starts, and there is no way around it: no birth time means no rising sign, which means no house numbers, which means the money houses cannot be located at all. Our engine refuses to guess a rising sign when the birth time is missing, because a wrong ascendant reassigns all four money houses to the wrong planets and produces a confident answer to the wrong chart.
The four ways two money rulers can be linked
Once you have the four planets, you are looking for one of four arrangements between them.
One. Conjunction. Two of the four rulers sit in the same sign. This is the most common form and the one AstroMedha's automatic detector reports. In whole-sign houses, the same sign means the same house, so the two rulers are also standing in the same house as each other.
Two. Exchange, called parivartana. The ruler of one money house sits in the sign of another money house, and that second house's ruler sits in the sign of the first. Each planet is standing in the other's territory. This is the rarest of the four forms and the tradition weighs it heavily, because it binds two houses to each other in a way that a single planet's placement does not. Read more on the mechanism in parivartana yoga.
Three. A one-way placement. One money-house ruler sits inside another money house, without the return trip. The 5th ruler standing in the 11th, for instance. This is support rather than a full combination, and it is very common.
Four. The lagna-ruler variant. The ruler of your rising sign is conjunct one of the four money-house rulers. This is the extra case AstroMedha's detector covers, and it is the reason its yes-rate is much higher than the four-house rule's.
To check your own chart against these, you need only two columns from your kundli: which sign each of the four rulers is in, and which house number that sign is for you. The exchange is the one worth checking by eye, because it is the rarest form and it is defined by two placements rather than one.
How common is a dhana yoga? We ran the check on 100,000 charts
We could not find a published figure for how often this combination actually occurs, so we computed one. We generated 100,000 birth charts with our own sidereal engine, drawing birth dates uniformly from 1960 to 2009 and birth times uniformly across the 24-hour clock, all cast at New Delhi. Then we applied the rules above to every chart.
| What was found among the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th rulers | Share of 100,000 charts |
|---|---|
| At least one conjunction (two rulers in one sign) | 44.4% |
| At least one exchange between two money houses | 3.3% |
| Either of those two, which is the full four-house rule | 46.5% |
| Neither, but at least one ruler standing in another money house | 42.7% |
| None of the three | 10.8% |
| The wider rule including the lagna ruler, as our detector applies it | 66.6% |
Two numbers there are worth sitting with. The first is that a dhana yoga under the strict four-house rule is close to a coin flip, and under the wider rule two charts in three have one. If you have been told you have one, that is real and it is also ordinary. The second is that only 10.8% of charts have no money-house connection of any kind, so the absence of one is the genuinely unusual result, not its presence.
The exchange is the form that is actually rare. It appeared in 3.3% of charts, and the most common pairing by a clear margin was between the 9th and 11th rulers, which occurred in 0.78% of all charts. The other five pairings each ran between 0.44% and 0.57%.
Why your ascendant changes the odds this much
The spread in that last table column is large: 26.4% for a Pisces ascendant against 74.6% for a Libra ascendant, a factor of nearly three. Two things account for all of it, and both are checkable.
The first is how many different planets you have. A chart with four different money-house rulers has six possible pairs that could conjoin; a chart with three has only three pairs. Every one of the six ascendants with four different rulers sits above 49% and every one of the six with three sits below 43%. There is no overlap between the two groups.
| Ascendant | Rulers of the four money houses | Different planets | Share with a link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Libra | Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Sun | 4 | 74.6% |
| Capricorn | Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Venus | 4 | 62.4% |
| Cancer | Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus | 4 | 62.4% |
| Sagittarius | Mars, Saturn, Sun, Venus | 4 | 60.5% |
| Aries | Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, Venus | 4 | 58.4% |
| Gemini | Mars, Moon, Saturn, Venus | 4 | 49.2% |
| Aquarius | Jupiter, Mercury, Venus | 3 | 42.4% |
| Taurus | Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn | 3 | 33.5% |
| Leo | Jupiter, Mars, Mercury | 3 | 31.4% |
| Scorpio | Jupiter, Mercury, Moon | 3 | 27.4% |
| Virgo | Moon, Saturn, Venus | 3 | 26.6% |
| Pisces | Mars, Moon, Saturn | 3 | 26.4% |
The second is which planets they are, and this is where the sky itself decides. Mercury and Venus orbit closer to the Sun than Earth does, so from here they never appear far from it. Across 8,000 dates sampled from the same period, our engine never placed Mercury more than 27.8 degrees from the Sun, or Venus more than 47.1 degrees. Signs are 30 degrees wide, so those three land in the same sign as each other far more often than any other planets do. Measured over the 100,000 charts, the Sun and Mercury shared a sign 51.3% of the time, Mercury and Venus 25.9%, and the Sun and Venus 23.6%. Every other pair of planets ran between 8.2% and 14.3%.
Put the two together and the whole ordering falls out. A Libra ascendant has Mercury ruling the 9th and the Sun ruling the 11th, the tightest pair in the sky, which is why three Libra charts in four carry a link. Cancer, Sagittarius and Aries all pair the Sun with Venus. Capricorn pairs Mercury with Venus. Gemini is the only four-ruler ascendant with none of those pairs, and it sits at the bottom of its group. Aquarius is the only three-ruler ascendant with one, Mercury on the 5th and Venus on the 9th, and it sits at the top of its group.
This is a useful thing to know before you attach much weight to having the combination. A large part of whether you have one was settled by which sign was rising, and a further part by the geometry of the inner solar system, neither of which is a statement about you. The condition of your own four planets is, and that is the next four questions.
Having the yoga is one question. Whether it is doing anything is four more.
A dhana yoga names an arrangement. It does not by itself say the arrangement is strong, well placed, or currently active. Four further checks decide that, and all four are computable from the same birth data.
Is each ruler strong in the sign it occupies?
Every planet has one sign where the tradition rates it strongest, the sign directly opposite where it rates it weakest, and one or two signs it owns outright. A planet in the first of those is exalted, meaning at full strength. In the second it is debilitated, meaning at its weakest. In a sign it owns it is at home, and anywhere else it is neutral. A conjunction between two money rulers reads very differently depending on which of those four applies to each participant.
In the 100,000 charts, 25.0% had at least one exalted money-house ruler, 44.4% had at least one in its own sign, and 27.2% had at least one debilitated. Narrowing to the conjunctions themselves, 46,372 individual conjunction instances occurred across the sample. Of those, 43.0% involved at least one exalted or own-sign participant, 17.6% involved at least one debilitated participant, and 45.2% involved participants that were all neutral. So roughly one conjunction in six is carrying a weakened leg, and that is the single most useful thing to check after you have found the combination at all.
Plain words. Mahadasha means the major chapter, lasting six to twenty years. Own sign means the sign that planet rules. Varga means the scheme of divisional charts cut from the main one.
Where does the link fall?
Two rulers conjoining in the 11th house and the same two conjoining in the 8th are not the same event, because the house they land in colours what the combination produces. Across those 46,372 conjunction instances, 34.2% fell in one of the four money houses, 33.5% fell in an angle (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th, the houses of visible action), 24.4% fell in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and 8.0% fell elsewhere. About a quarter of the time, then, the combination is sitting in the rough ground of the chart. It is still there and it still counts. What changes is the setting it works in, because those three houses are read for debt and effort, for sudden change, and for expenditure and things that happen far from home.
What does the D2 hora chart add?
The D2 is a divisional chart, meaning a second chart derived by cutting each sign of the birth chart into equal parts and reading where each planet lands. The D2 cuts every sign in half and is the varga the tradition assigns to wealth specifically. In odd signs the first fifteen degrees belong to the Sun's half and the second fifteen to the Moon's; in even signs it reverses. Every planet therefore ends up in one of exactly two signs, Leo for the Sun's half and Cancer for the Moon's.
The reading is about how money behaves rather than how much of it arrives. Planets in the Sun's half build money through initiative, work and visibility. Planets in the Moon's half grow it through saving, holding and steady inflow. Applied to your money-house rulers, it answers a question the D1 birth chart does not: whether your money is made or kept. In the 100,000 charts, 82.1% had their money-house rulers split across both halves and only 17.9% had all of them concentrated in one, so a chart with all its money rulers in a single hora is the uncommon case and reads as a chart with one clear mode rather than two.
For the other divisional charts, the honest answer to "what do they say about wealth" is that they are asked different questions. Our engine computes the classical sixteen plus D5 and D8, and seven of those carry the readings this page leans on: D2 for wealth and resources, D4 for home, property and residence, D5 for fame and authority, D7 for children and creative output, D8 for sudden events and obstacles, D9 for the underlying strength of any placement, and D10 for career and public standing. If the question is money, D2 is the one that answers it. How the divisional charts divide up covers the rest, and reading the D2 hora chart goes deeper on this one.
When does the yoga get its turn?
This is the check that decides whether any of the previous three is happening now. A combination in a birth chart is a standing arrangement present from birth to death. What changes is which planet is running your life at a given time, through the dasha system: a sequence of planetary periods that covers 120 years, with a major period (mahadasha) lasting between six and twenty years, and an antardasha, which is the sub-period inside it, lasting months to a few years.
A dhana yoga is on stage during the periods of the planets that form it and quiet otherwise. Because the rulers of your money houses are fixed by your ascendant, the share of the 120-year cycle those planets control is fixed too, and it can be computed exactly.
| Ascendant | Rulers of the money houses | Share of the 120-year cycle they run |
|---|---|---|
| Capricorn | Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Venus | 52.5% |
| Aries | Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, Venus | 50.8% |
| Gemini | Mars, Moon, Saturn, Venus | 46.7% |
| Aquarius | Jupiter, Mercury, Venus | 44.2% |
| Taurus | Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn | 43.3% |
| Sagittarius | Mars, Saturn, Sun, Venus | 43.3% |
| Cancer | Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus | 40.8% |
| Virgo | Moon, Saturn, Venus | 40.8% |
| Libra | Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Sun | 40.8% |
| Scorpio | Jupiter, Mercury, Moon | 35.8% |
| Leo | Jupiter, Mars, Mercury | 33.3% |
| Pisces | Mars, Moon, Saturn | 30.0% |
Rahu and Ketu run 25 of the 120 years between them and rule no sign, so 20.8% of every chart's cycle belongs to planets that hold no house at all. That sets a ceiling on the column above and explains why even the best-placed ascendant tops out near half.
Libra sits at the top of the earlier table and in the lower half of this one. Its money houses are ruled by Mercury and the Sun, which conjoin constantly, and the Sun runs only six years of the 120. A chart can very likely have the combination and get comparatively few years in which it leads. The two questions are separate and both need answering.
Three charts, worked all the way through
The three below are computed by AstroMedha's engine from the birth data shown, using Lahiri sidereal positions and whole-sign houses. Every sign, house, dignity and date is engine output.
Chart 1: the combination is present, one leg is weak, and it is running now
Born 2 November 1985, 21:45, Bengaluru. Gemini ascendant at 14.51 degrees.
| Money house | Sign | Ruler | Ruler sits in | Ruler's house | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd | Cancer | Moon | Gemini 10.23 | 1st | neutral |
| 5th | Libra | Venus | Virgo 27.65 | 4th | debilitated |
| 9th | Aquarius | Saturn | Scorpio 4.65 | 6th | neutral |
| 11th | Aries | Mars | Virgo 10.13 | 4th | neutral |
Venus rules the 5th and Mars rules the 11th, and both are in Virgo, so this chart has the conjunction form. The two sit 17.5 degrees apart inside Virgo. The rule is same-sign rather than same-degree, so the link stands at that distance. The conjunction falls in the 4th house, which is an angle rather than a money house.
Venus is debilitated in Virgo. That matters here because Venus is the leg of this combination that rules speculation and returns on judgement, so the classical read is a chart where gains arrive through enterprise and initiative, which is the Mars side, more readily than through investment placed well, which is the Venus side. The engine also finds a second wealth combination in this chart under the wider rule: Mercury, which rules the ascendant, sits with Saturn, which rules the 9th, in Scorpio, linking the person to the fortune house.
In the D2 hora chart the four rulers split two and two. Venus and the Moon fall in the Sun's half, the earning half, and they rule the 5th and the 2nd. Mars and Saturn fall in the Moon's half, the holding half, and they rule the 11th and the 9th. Read together: speculation and savings are where this chart acts, while gains and fortune are where it accumulates quietly.
The timing is the part to act on. This chart is in Saturn's major period, running 9 January 2015 to 9 January 2034. Saturn rules the 9th, so the whole nineteen-year block is a fortune-house period. Inside it, the Moon sub-period runs 12 December 2025 to 14 July 2027, and the Moon rules the 2nd, so right now a money-house sub-period is running inside a money-house major period. Mars, ruling the 11th, takes the next sub-period from 14 July 2027 to 22 August 2028. So the 9th ruler holds the major period while the 2nd and the 11th rulers hold back-to-back sub-periods across the late 2020s.
Chart 2: a textbook exchange, and it does not get its turn for years
Born 21 June 1997, 04:10, New Delhi. Taurus ascendant at 16.92 degrees.
| Money house | Sign | Ruler | Ruler sits in | Ruler's house | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd | Gemini | Mercury | Taurus 29.83 | 1st | neutral |
| 5th | Virgo | Mercury | Taurus 29.83 | 1st | neutral |
| 9th | Capricorn | Saturn | Pisces 25.09 | 11th | neutral |
| 11th | Pisces | Jupiter | Capricorn 27.93 | 9th | debilitated |
No two rulers share a sign here, so there is no conjunction. What this chart has instead is the rarest form. Saturn rules the 9th and is standing in the 11th; Jupiter rules the 11th and is standing in the 9th. Each is in the other's house. That is a parivartana between the two houses of gain and fortune, and it occurred in 0.78% of the 100,000 charts.
One thing to know before you run a chart like this through an automatic checker: AstroMedha's yoga detector reports the conjunction form, so on this chart it returns Raja Yoga, meaning a combination for rise and standing, and does not name a Dhana Yoga. The exchange is still there and is visible in exactly the two rows of the table above. Read the ruler column against the house column, and if two money rulers have swapped houses, you have it whatever the summary line says.
Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, which weakens the 11th ruler that half of the exchange rests on. A specific rule answers that rather than a reassurance. This chart shows a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga for Jupiter in this chart, meaning the weakness is cancelled. The cancellation fires because Saturn, which rules the sign Jupiter is weak in and is therefore the planet that placement reports to, sits in an angle counted from the Moon. Saturn is in Pisces and the Moon is in Sagittarius, which puts Saturn in the 4th from the Moon. So the weak leg of this exchange has a documented repair, and the classical read of that pattern is strength arrived at through early difficulty rather than strength handed over at the start.
The D2 is unusually clean. Mercury, Saturn and Jupiter, which are all three of this chart's money rulers, land in the Sun's half of the hora chart. This is the 17.9% case: one mode rather than two. Money in this chart is made through initiative rather than gathered steadily.
The timing is the problem, and it is worth being direct about it. This chart entered the Moon's major period on 1 June 2026, running to 31 May 2036. The Moon rules the 3rd here, which is not a money house. Neither Saturn nor Jupiter, the two planets that form the exchange, holds a major period until Jupiter's begins on 1 June 2061. What the next decade does offer is sub-periods: Jupiter's sub-period from 1 May 2029 to 31 August 2030, Saturn's from 31 August 2030 to 1 April 2032, and Mercury's, which rules both the 2nd and the 5th, from 1 April 2032 to 31 August 2033. So the strongest combination on this page belongs to a chart whose money years are two and a half to seven years out, and knowing that is the difference between waiting well and concluding the reading was wrong.
Chart 3: no link among the four, and what that actually means
Born 14 March 1990, 09:20, Mumbai. Aries ascendant at 15.75 degrees.
| Money house | Sign | Ruler | Ruler sits in | Ruler's house | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd | Taurus | Venus | Capricorn 14.28 | 10th | neutral |
| 5th | Leo | Sun | Aquarius 29.58 | 11th | neutral |
| 9th | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Gemini 7.58 | 3rd | neutral |
| 11th | Aquarius | Saturn | Sagittarius 29.51 | 9th | neutral |
Four rulers, four different signs, no exchange. Under the strict four-house rule this chart does not have a dhana yoga, which places it with the 53.5% that do not.
Three other things are true of the same four planets. The Sun rules the 5th and is standing in the 11th. Saturn rules the 11th and is standing in the 9th. Two of the four money rulers are sitting inside money houses, which is the one-way support form, and this chart has two instances of it rather than the more usual one. Under the wider rule that includes the ascendant ruler, the engine does report a Dhana Yoga: Mars rules the ascendant, Venus rules the 2nd, and the two sit together in Capricorn, 6.2 degrees apart, in the 10th house of work and standing. So the answer to "do I have one" for this chart is no under one rule and yes under another, and the difference is not a technicality. It says money in this chart is tied to the person's own effort and visible work rather than to the money houses reinforcing each other independently.
In the D2 hora, three of the four rulers (the Sun, Venus and Saturn) fall in the Moon's half, with only Jupiter in the Sun's. The classical read is a chart that holds and grows more readily than it earns in bursts.
On timing, this chart has been in Jupiter's major period since 17 September 2011, running to 17 September 2027, and Jupiter rules the 9th. The current sub-period belongs to Rahu, which rules no sign and holds no house, from 23 April 2025 to 17 September 2027. Saturn's major period then opens on 17 September 2027 and runs nineteen years to 2046. Saturn here rules the 10th and the 11th, work and gains, and it opens with its own sub-period. For a chart with no four-house combination, that is a substantial and dated money window, and it arrives next year.
What to do with the answer, either way
If you have the combination, three things decide whether it delivers: whether either participating ruler is debilitated, whether the link falls in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and when the participating planets next run a period. A conjunction of two strong rulers in the 11th house during that pair's own dasha is a different life from the same conjunction sitting in the 8th with a debilitated leg and its periods forty years out. Both are truthfully described as "you have a dhana yoga".
If you do not have it, you are in a group that includes 53.5% of charts under the four-house rule, and the first thing to check is whether you have the one-way form, which 42.7% of charts do. After that, the wider rule involving your ascendant ruler catches many more. Only 10.8% of charts have no money-house connection of any kind, and even that is a statement about how this chart earns rather than about how much. With no link between them, the four money houses are each working alone, so the chart's money usually rests on whichever single one is strongest rather than on two houses reinforcing each other. That is worth knowing when you are choosing between concentrating and spreading.
If your money rulers are weak or your money periods are years away, the question that actually helps is which houses money is reaching you through in the meantime. Is wealth blocked in my chart works through that case, and why money comes and goes but never stays covers the 2nd-house side of it specifically.
Running this on your own chart
The free kundli tool needs no account and gives you what steps one and two require: your rising sign, every planet with its sign and house, and your current planetary period. With that page open beside the ascendant table above, you can find your four money rulers and check them for a conjunction or an exchange in a few minutes. The free dasha tool gives your current major period and sub-period and what comes next, if you want to check the timing question yourself.
A free account includes two Chart Chat questions, which reads your computed kundli and answers follow-up questions against it rather than against a general description, which is the right place to ask what a particular debilitated ruler means in your chart specifically.
The Wealth Window report is the version that does all of this for you and dates it. It names the rulers of your 2nd and 11th houses and their condition, detects the money combinations your chart carries, places your planets in the D2 hora chart, lists the sub-periods of your running major period with the houses each sub-lord rules, and scores the next twelve months as dated windows for committing and for sitting still. It runs the dignity check, the house check, the hora check and the timing check on your own chart, and prints the dates.
