Bhai Dooj 2026: The Sister's Blessing
Bhai Dooj falls on 11 November 2026, the day sisters apply tilak and pray for their brothers. The closing day of Diwali and its meaning explained.
Bhai Dooj falls on 11 November 2026, on the second tithi of the bright fortnight of Kartika, Shukla Dwitiya, which we confirmed against the panchang. It is the last of the five days of Diwali, the day a sister applies a tilak to her brother's forehead and prays for his long life, and he pledges to protect her.
The Companion to Raksha Bandhan
Bhai Dooj and Raksha Bandhan are the two sibling festivals of the year, set six months apart, and they mirror each other. Where Raksha Bandhan turns on the thread, Bhai Dooj turns on the tilak and the shared meal. The story tells of Yama, the lord of death, visiting his sister Yamuna on this day, where she welcomed him with a tilak and a feast, and he granted that any brother who receives the tilak from his sister on this day would be spared untimely death. For that reason the day is also called Yama Dwitiya.
One Festival, Many Names
The day is kept across India under names that all point to the same bond. In Maharashtra and the west it is Bhau Beej. In Bengal it is Bhai Phonta, where the sister fasts until she has marked her brother's forehead. In the north it is simply Bhai Dooj or Bhai Tika. The Yamuna runs through the southern and eastern versions especially, brother and sister bathing in the river where they can, recalling Yama and Yamuna, and the customs vary in detail while holding to the one act, the sister's mark and blessing on the brother.
How It Is Kept
The sister applies a tilak of vermilion and rice to her brother's forehead, performs his aarti, and feeds him sweets and a meal made with care, praying for his long and well life. The brother gives a gift in return and pledges his protection. Where there is no brother or sister by birth, the bond is kept with cousins or chosen siblings, as the spirit of the day is the protection between siblings rather than the strict tie of blood.
What the Day Asks of You
If you have a sibling, keep the day, the tilak, the meal, the aarti, and the small gift, and where distance separates you, send the tilak and call. The day closes the long arc of Diwali on the most human note, not wealth or victory but the bond between brother and sister and the wish for each other's long life. Make the meal with real care, sit together, and let the festival of lights end in the warmth of family. If brother and sister cannot meet, a video call with the tilak applied by the sister's own hand at her end, and sweets shared across the distance, keeps the bond the day exists to honour.
